Thanks, GT! Yes, I'm almost there. Having to tighten my diet to keep the gallbladder happy has moved the scale a couple of pounds. Getting so close to goal! So long as I stay super low-fat (clearly no Keto for me) I don't have any pain, so that's what I'm doing. -
So I am 5 years post sleeve. I managed to get within 5 lbs of my goal and slowly slipped back into bad habits. When I went for my annual PCP appointment and saw the scales were reading 175, I almost cried. I hadn't been weighing myself over this past year due to my house flooding and all my stuff was in storage for 6 months. I realized that I had been wearing stretchy leggings and hadn't tried on a pair of jeans in a year (again everything was in storage and I bought a few comfy outfits to tide me over till the home repairs were complete) I went through my kitchen and pulled all processed foods, bread, flour, sugars, root veggies, fruits, cereals, pasta and rice. I gave these things away to my neighbors. I researched diets and weight gain after sleeve procedure. I have started following a modified Keto diet. I say modified because I try to keep my protein at 80 grams a day. So basically I have replaced carbs with healthy fats. My next step back on track was to come back to this site and read the different topics. It has been 2 weeks on my version of Keto and have lost 8 lbs! I still have problems eating enough calories and know my metabolism is slow so I eat what I can and spread a meal to be a 1/2 cup meal and 1/2 cup snack 2-3 hours later. I have found some great recipes online and have bought a few books about Keto diet. I have read up on resistant starches because I have not taken beans out of my diet. They are my source of Fiber and some protein. Since I only eat a couple tablespoon full of beans, I am testing the theory about resistant starches by eating the beans cold. Apparently when certain foods are cooked and then cooled, the carbs crystalize and become resistant to digestion (but are great food for gut flora). I bought a new scale (my old one was lost in the flood) and have started keeping track of what I eat. Coming back to this site and writing my story will help me keep on track to getting back to my goal weight.

Everyone needs to find a plan they can live with and find a way to stick to it. I am around 10 weeks post op, so I am still relatively early in my journey--but I started with a relatively low BMI (37) and I only around 25 pounds away from my goal weight. I have been using the time to focus on major lifestyle changes. I do track everything I eat (most of the time) using MyFitnessPal. It's a great way to hold yourself accountable and see where you could be making mistakes. I am happy following a very low carb (keto-style diet). My macros are generally in the order of 43% protein, 40% fat and 7% carbs (mostly in the form of fibrous veggies) . I do track my calories, but my main focus is on sticking to my macros. I usually eat between 1100 and 1400 calories a day at this point. I am trying to bring it back down closer to 1100 at the moment. That's a sustainable amount for me at the moment, since I work out for 2-2.5 hours at a high intensity every morning.

I'm four and a half years out. My two cents 😉 How do you get back on board? "What do you do when you lose control of your eating?" Some things to try. I understand the struggles you are describing. We already know what we should be doing. Getting back on track is a mental battle. What do I do to get back on board is detox off carbs and sugar, I accept that I will feel crappy for a short period of time. Give yourself small attainable goals to start. (Five pounds at a time) I give myself a loving kick in the @ss perspective. A person with cancer and months to live would gladly trade places for our weight loss struggles. Many reasons why people over eat. One way to manage it is to make a note in your food log when your off track and try to pin point your reasons or what you’re feeling After a year, Diet is not a one size fits all. Keto, intermittent fasting, whole foods, Going back to basics, paleo, vegan. The list goes on Whatever diet you choose, you need to know what calories and macros put your body into weight loss mode. (These numbers will be specific to you) Use your food log. Dial your calories back by 100 calories for a month, if the scale does not move dial it back again. When you are ready to maintain start moving your calories up to find the macros that stop your weight loss. I am female 5’5” I can gain on 1400/1500 calories. The numbers are different for each of us. Again, not a one size fits all. I could feel less restriction at a year out. I had to fill the extra volume with dense protein and as much veggies until I felt full. Honestly, its not hard to consume extra calories. It’s something I have to keep an eye on years out. Get rid of bars, shakes. Eating real food will keep you more satiated Dense protein Keep healthy sweet and salty foods on hand to satisfy cravings Remove temptation foods from your home Log, hydrate and get activity in Keep a veggie tray in the fridge for boredom and head hunger. Allow yourself to eat as much of it until full (I do this for night snacking) Pre – cook or meal prep. Make larger batches of foods and freeze them in smaller portions. Almond Flour Cinnamon Rolls – Low Carb and Gluten-Free Tender, moist, and perfectly cinnamon-y with a biscuit-like texture, these cinnamon rolls are a sweet keto treat! Course Breakfast Cuisine Breakfast Prep Time 25 minutes Cook Time 20 minutes Total Time 45 minutes Servings 8 cinnamon rolls Ingredients Dough: 2 cups almond flour 3 tbsp granular Swerve Sweetener or other granulated erythritol 3 tbsp unflavored whey protein powder 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp xanthan gum 2 large eggs lightly beaten 1/4 cup butter melted Filling: 1 tbsp butter melted 2 tbsp brown sugar substitute I used Ideal 1 tsp cinnamon Cream Cheese Icing 2 oz cream cheese softened 1 tbsp powdered Swerve Sweetener or other powdered erythritol 1 tbsp heavy cream 1/4 tsp vanilla extract Instructions Preheat oven to 325F and grease an 8-inch round cake pan with butter. In a large bowl, whisk together almond flour, Swerve, whey protein, baking powder, baking soda, salt and xanthan gum. Stir in eggs and butter until dough comes together. It will be quite sticky. Turn out dough onto a large piece of parchment, and then pat into a rough rectangle. Top with another piece of parchment and roll out to about 10x8 inches. Peel off top piece of parchment paper. Brush dough with melted butter, then sprinkle with brown sugar substitute and cinnamon, going almost right to edges. Starting with the far, longer edge of your dough, gently lift away from the parchment and roll up tightly towards you. Pinch the seam to seal. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut into 8 equal portions. Place in prepared cake pan, just barely touching each other, and bake for 20 to 22 minutes, or until just golden brown. Remove and let cool 10 minutes. For the Frosting, beat all ingredients in a medium bowl and then pipe or spread onto warm rolls. Recipe Notes Serves 8. Each serving has 7.1g of carbs and 3g of fiber. That's awesome! I lost nothing on my 2 week liquid pre op. I have no thyroid either. The struggle has been real. I feel very good. THANK GOD because my job is hard and I have to make money. I'm 5'3 super short haha so I'm just a short chunk. My face has thinned out the most. I'm so happy for your loss!!! Are you feeling proud and good? So the first 3 months I sucked at eating real foods. I was content with shakes. Now I'm feeling like i have hunger and I crave more foods. I was hoping that was gone. Lol nope it's back. I have been following basically keto with 2 shakes a day. I find myself eating alot nuts and soft meats. Plus 2 premier shakes. Doing Keto the CORRECT way is absolutely a great way to maintain/continue weight loss. Some very important things to consider though: Keto, Atkins, Paleo, South Beach, most diets are actually very similar in that total carbs are reuced early on for weight loss, an then gradually re-integrated in healthier forms, with sugar and white flour/rice/etc never really coming back into the fold. Long-term weight loss on keto can dimish over time, so cycling in and out of phase 1/extremely low carb is most effective Base calorie counting should still be a part of your regimen Lean meats and specific kinds of fat are needed -- this is *not* an all-bacon and steak diet. Keto is a great way to teach yourself how to eat healthy, and as you progress along with various phases of the diet, how to recognize an incorporate healthy, high-quality carbohydrates and foods. Work with your doctor/nutritionist and maintain routine check-ups and bloodwork, as well as making sure you're getting all the nutrients you need Buy stock in avocaos. They are so freaking good, lol. Research the keto diet in ALL its stages, not just the initial no-carb level. It's important that you not just diet, but rather learn to enjoy food in a way that will sustain you for the rest of your life. If it feels like punishment, restriction, and compromise, it'll be unsustainable in the long term. -

This might have been asked before but I am struggling to lose 35lbs of baby weight! Trying to find the right foods and ways of eating that will work with gastric bypass. Attempted Keto but I got nervous about more malnutrition or sodium issues! HELP! 35lbs May seem like nothing from how much I lost but it feels like a ton and is weighing on me physically!

I'm not saying this is an idea solution, but this is what I've done, in order of best to worst: Look up KETO recipes for sweets! You can make your own chocolate (yes, even bars!), use fat alternatives to reduce the fat in the recipes, and eat it pretty much GUILT free. Make it with erithrytol or stevia as your sweetener so you don't have an insulin response. You can also look into Lily's chocolate bars, your local super market may have them and they use stevia. Buy Slim Fast fat bomb peanut butter cups and have ONE. They're made with erithrytol so they're good! Or look at Quest protein bars or Atkins candy. Try to avoid Maltitol, which is a sugar alcohol that WILL spike your insulin and can perpetuate further cravings. In a pinch, get sugar free chocolate (like Russell Stovers SUGAR FREE) and only have a portion size or less. Definitely don't have more or you'll be married to the porcelain throne all night. Warning: they are dangerously delicious and, much like sugar, won't fully satisfy that craving and will leave you wanting more so exercise extreme caution and willpower here. Good luck! -
My surgeon recommends low carb, low fat, high protein. I know protein is most important for us, but if we have the room after eating our protein (at this point I hit my protein goal easily each day), what about fats? I'm wondering because there are tons of awesome keto recipes I'd love to try, and after trying a few, my body feels even better and I'm still losing weight at the same pace. But I want to make sure I'm not making some huge mistake if I do this. Edit: if it makes a difference, I'm about 3 months out from surgery and dealing with sugar cravings something fierce, and being able to have peanut butter or something would be awesome for staving off the cravings.

I understand every body is different. I'm sorry it came across as judgemental. I percieved your post as judgemental, and reacted to that. I 'm sorry if I misinterpreted your post. I totally agree that there are many ways if eating and each body is different. I'm glad you found your way. But it seemed you were putting down my way of eating. There are a lot of variations on Keto now, and some of them are strange. But the main definition of keto is to lower your ketones by giving up carbs. Usually, those carbs are replaced by fat--i.e. cream instead of milk, cooking in a healthy fat instead of just using a nonstick spray, etc.. Some of the ways I hear about keto seem gimmicky, but, (as you said, and I agree,) every body is different. The main thing many people don't realize is that keto is a lifestyle, not just a diet to go on and quit when you reach your goal. Unfortunately, it is hard to make it a lifestyle with so many delicious carbs out there, tempting you--sigh. But it is the only diet that works for me long term, even if I fall off often. One benefit for me is that I never developed diabetes, even though my weight went up (gained a lot of weight due to medications).

I didn’t literally mean eat bacon all day smh. I know how keto works, i know all about the keto flu. If it works for you, cool but it’s not for me. Also, please keep in mind: how you do keto is not necessarily how others do it. There’s clean keto, lazy keto, dirty keto and strict keto. For me personally, there is literally no nutritional need to add unnecessary fat period. You can do the exact same thing simply by cutting out carbs and sugars and your body will adapt accordingly. The keto flu is temporary- that is not what i experienced which is why i can’t stand it and that is my choice. My body loves balance and variety, my body loves all veggies and all fruits, and doesn’t like restricting entire food groups. We are just different and that’s fine. Please stop judging me simply because my choice is different from yours. Obviously it’s working for me.

I don't know who told you to eat bacon all day--that's not how keto works. I eat over 4 cups of green veggies every day, I know of other keto dieters who eat more, but the lapband means I can't eat large amounts of food. Breakfast is usually a protein drink, made with 1/3 cream, 2/3 water plus my protein powder. Lunch may be a salad or a low carb veggie, and I might have a piece or two of bacon or a boiled egg in it for added protein and satiety. Dinner is a protein dish (always has veggies mixed with the meat,) and a side of veggies. I sometimes have one or two "fat bombs" which is a fancy way of saying sugar free candy in a bite sized serving--and I mean small bites. Yes, there is a deficit, but when I'm on keto, I don't crave sweets or carbs. I am not tempted by my husbands high carbohydrate foods. It isn't a gimmick. There's lots of science behind why it works and how to do it properly. It isn't for everyone, but please don't look down on those of us it helps. Also, many people are sick the first week or so of the diet. Changing from burning carbohydrates to burning fat sometimes takes a bit ot time. But it does pass. It is called the "keto flu"

Honestly, get a different nut. This is lousy advice since it relies on eating processed crap bars loaded with chemicals 4 times a day as meal substitutes. While you may lose some weight in the short term, her recommendation will cause you to have insulin spikes which screw up your metabolism and cause you to gain weight in the long term. You need to get on a lifestyle plan you can live with long term and you are already getting the exercise up. I like the keto lifestyle personally, but it's not for everyone. Nevertheless, every major diet/lifestyle plan and common sense suggests you should be cutting out all processed foods, sugar foods and anything that even remote sounds like it was developed in laboratory in favor of a clean, whole foods type diet. Protein drinks and protein bars are ok if you can only eat 500 calories a day and had to hit your protein goals. It's not ok 2.5 years post op when you can get most of your nutritional needs from the food you eat. Anyway, I think you know what you need to do and you're now doing it!! -
All diets work lol. Not all are the best for everyone but they all work. Simply because they all involve some sort of deficit. Consistency or lack of is what causes us to fail on diets. I’ve talked to about 4 different nutritionists, none of the recommend keto. I’ve tried it personally and as appealing as it sounds to eat bacon all day, it wasn’t for me. I felt physically sick and the lack of nutritional balance made it simply a diet, not a lifestyle and not one that i would be willing to stick to. It was just to restrictive. Plus- no need to eat 75% fat, that is purely to feel satisfied. As log as you cut out carbs and sugars, just junk in general paired with exercise you will lose significant amounts of weight. No gimmicks needed.

Congrats to July sleepers and all of our accomplishments. My max weight 272. SW 259. CW 187. surgery July 18th. I am completely blessed since surgery and haven't had much problems. No adverse events other than my intestines did not like liquid protein, and had to stop it until month 3. Now I can tolerate them Not tolerating them was a major bummer since that is what we have been doing and on the liquid diet. I exercise 3-4 times a week. I want to do more. My energy isn't what I thought it would be, but to be expected with all the changes. My registered dietician has been phenomenal. I also live premier protein. I use half a container with 8 ounces of skim milk once or twice daily. Twice daily if exercising. Thank you for sharing your coffee recipe. My biggest temptation: chocolate. I have been doing the sugar free instant puddings with heavy whipping cream. So good. I added chopped macadamia nuts to it last night... heaven. pumpkin keto recipe: can of pure pumpkin, cream cheese softened, 5 packs of truevia, 1 cup of heavy whipping cream, pumpkin pie spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. It was pretty good. Let it set for a day so all the seasoning can work it's magic. What is everyone else doing.

Recidivist, things are going fine. They put me on a keto style diet. I can eat meat and non starch veggies. No sugar, no dairy no starch like potatoes or pasta, and no fruit. I can have almonds or cashews. I have been doing this a week all ready. Today, I only ate once all day and could not figure out why I was starving. So I got some meat for dinner tonight. The tough thing about this diet is we have been without power at our house for the last three days. But I have stuck to the diet -

Urgh, yes I totally feel your pain on cooking. No way am I cooking if I can't eat it. Lol! Yes, even if you're not on the actual "keto" diet, if you're doing low to no carbs, your body will likely be going into ketosis (burning fat rather than carbs). If you look up "keto flu" you'll likely see your symptoms are completely normal [emoji4] Look up "The Big Ward" if you want some inspo on Netflix!
