Hi all, All, On my recent trip to Silicon Valley, I had an opportunity to catch up with an old acquaintance of mine, Joseph Rosenfeld. I know Joseph because during the period I lived in Silicon valley, I was working in some intense environments (technically speaking) and while running a couple large teams, I felt my image was not living up to what I wanted to project. However, as we all know, that image we feel inside was clouded/obscured by obesity, which at that time, I was at my heaviest weight of 421. Talking with Joseph then I think started me on the path to WLS, because as an expert in clothing/style/body image, he was aware the change I needed could not be helped by clothes alone. When I met Joseph this past Saturday for Breakfast (because I am considering working with him now that I have the WLS changes in process) he didnt recognize me, even though I had alluded to that issue when we discussed getting together over email. It was great to see him and he was quite surprised at where I was in my journey and success I've had. We talked at length about the challenges Obese and WLS patients face in overcoming body dysmorphia and the mental challenges that seems so much more difficult and insidious than the pure physical surgery, etc. I hope I represented our community well, and we discussed many things, but apologies in advance if you dont feel this is applicable to you. Well, Joseph felt my pain I think and since he does a weekly blog, decided to do this weeks post about many of the issues I brought up to him. You can find it here http://www.josephrosenfeld.com/category/blog/. Joseph's a great guy and has faced many of his own challenges and demons and I really felt comfortable in sharing my journey thus far and I hope starting to open the eyes of professionals in the fashion/personal image consulting area to the issues we are facing. Feel free to have a read and leave any comments for him. Or share them directly with our group here and I will pass them along. yours truly, Craig Cumberland

Here's an idea for the new year that I tried a couple of years ago and plan to do again. Get yourself a cookie jar (or dig out the one that you hid away after you got banded) and put three dollars in it every day, without fail. No cheating. You can use the jar to make change, but do not borrow from it. By the end of the year you will have over $1000 to spend on yourself! I used mine to go to Italy. Next year's stash will help buy a new wardrobe in January 2006, I hope.

PCOS/ Sleeve/Mexico/loan question
KristenVSG2014 replied to JennG25's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had the sleeve surgery in Mexico on 11/3/14, one week before my 29th birthday. I'm 5'7, my highest weight is 290 and my weight when I decided to get surgery was 261. I have PCOS and have always fought for every single pound I lost. It seemed like I could follow my diet perfectly 95% of the time and workout but that 5% would set me back every single time. I used to joke that I could look at a potato and gain 5 pounds. It's kinda true. Since I decided to get surgery I'm down over 50 pounds and over 80 since my heaviest weight. The biggest piece of advice I have for you is to follow a low carb diet as much as possible after surgery. This can make you or break you with PCOS and insulin resistance. Also, my periods have started back, although I forgot how bad cramps can be and now I miss not having one! I work at a bank so I just told my boss I needed a loan and I was approved on the spot. I didn't go through A Lighter Me or Dr. Kelly so no advice there. -

Hello! I am almost 3 weeks out and wondering about what I should be eating. I am altering between 1/2 cup to 100grams. But if its puree sometimes I do more. Can I get an idea of how much others are able to eat at this point? Or how much you can comfortable eat where you are now? I'm scared to stretch my pouch! Also how many meals are you eating a day? Thanks!

Just Got Back From Orientation
mrsmyers2010 replied to myownjourney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not banded yet so I can't say that I know lap band does work but look all the people on this forum and how successful they have been whether they lost 40 pounds or 100+ pounds, that's something. My surgeon told me out of the three surgeries, lap band would not help me lose as much weight as say, gastric bypass or the sleeve. However, after floating around these boards I know that is up to ME. If I want to lose 100 pounds+ with the band, it can be done if I'm willing to do the work. I am also young (22) and my surgeon said nothing to me about being so young and probably being unsuccessful. He actually was more optimistic that I was so young, after all we have all the time in the world to make this work for us! If you're that concerned that it can't be done, check newtoy4kt on YouTube. (check out bandedwendy's channel also!) They were what pushed me to my final decision of lap band. Whatever you choose, good luck! -
I just found this site and am loving it. I'm 9 years out from surgery. I just started doing weekly meal prep a few months ago and am running out of ideas. I'd love to hear what you all do for meal prep! Thanks, Val

I wore a pair of Spanx the other day. I am seven weeks post op. Since they were my pair from pre-surgery, they were pretty comfortable.

:help: Hi there! I am scheduled for surgery on Dec. 20. I just found out that we are moving about a week or two later. I have made it public knowledge that I am having this surgery, and I don't think I plan to. Do you all think I'll be able to lift stuff by then, and if not, I wonder what I say to people who come and help us move? What a predicament! :omg:

Well done! My first mini goal was to get under 100 kilos (220 pounds) and I thought I might get there this week. Unfortunately, I gained some weight yesterday, and today I'm still somewhat heavier than I was two days ago, so I don't think it's going to happen this week. It's great to be able to see progress. I too, have a long way to go, and sometimes I'm afraid I will never get there.

sleeved May 1st! It's been five weeks..slow loser :-(
oldskoolsooz posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi there. I'm exactly 5 weeks post-op today yaaay! I had a very difficult first 2-3 weeks healing process but at 4 weeks I started to feel much better and now I feel pretty good. Im 5'2" and started my journey at 248 lbs on April 1st. I lost 10 lbs during the pre-op diet period and I was sleeved on May 1st. By June 1st I had lost 11 more lbs. I have lost a total of 21 lbs in two months. I can't say I'm not disappointed especially reading how so many people are losing so so so much faster :-( I try to remain positive and keep in mind that I'm losing and not gaining! Unfortunately Ive become hungry..not head hunger which I was prepared for tnx to this forum..but real hunger! I can eat quite a lot..a lot more than I expected or wanted in fact =-O I haven't tried to push the limit and get as full as I can. I follow the protein first, no water 15 mins before and 30 mins after rules. I'm still figuring it out i guess. I'm going to see my surgeon and have my follow up tomorrow and with my nutritionist on Thursday. Hopefully they will shed some light and help me get on a faster roll :-) tnx to everyone who has given advice and good luck to all of us! -
Are you taking heartburn meds? Like Prilosec? My doctor also recommended Malox or something similar to soothe my stomach. I also had to revert back to softer foods for an extra week.

driving home right after surgery.
Shear Diva replied to Angi281's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
NO you will not be able to drive yourself home, you'll still be on pain meds. My stay was 2 days with no complications. BTW I'm almost 3 weeks post op. I'm so sorry you don't have support from your family & friends! I joined this site about 4 days ago & I've seen the love everyone gives to one another so I think you have come to the right place! What I can say is, if you have made your mind up please don't let transportation stop you!! Take a taxi!! Heck if your in my city Concord NC or close by I'll be more than happy to drive you there and pick you up!! -
whine: I want soup!
onthefencejenny replied to itsmekarenlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
That is strange! I'll be going in to full fluids on friday(1 week post op) and I can have cream soups! -
actually might be really helpful. a break every once in a while is a good thing for your routine. don't feel guilty at all. 5 days a week is awesome.

sleep apnea - I don't think they'd deny anyone for that. I think the issue is the anesthesiologist has to know about it so they can take precautions pain - I had pretty much none, other than sore abs for a few days having people there to care for you - my husband took a week off work to stay with me, but after the first couple of days, I would have been fine on my own something going wrong - it happens, but fortunately, it's not common. These surgeries have come a LONG way and are among the safest surgeries out there. They're safer than hip replacement surgery, and they do those every day! stroke - not sure what to say here, other than hopefully they'd let you know early on if they can't do the surgery because of the stroke

How are thig going. Your picture could be seen and two sisters. The old you and the new you. I got banded on March 28th. So far I am 21 pounds down from 271. Yesterday (5/16/07) I got my first fill. I think it wasn't enough. I even asked my Dr--could she do 2-cc's. She said--all wanted to do was 1 cc of water in the ort for the first fill. Then says--I will not be back til June-6th. Means I have wait about 3 weeks before I can get a fill. My Dr is the only fill dr in her office of 12 docs....Strange?

Maybe best to get the strips to check. If you don’t mind my asking what are you eating that is putting you in ketosis? My first two weeks were free fluids and I found there’s not that many keto choices except the pre op shakes. I did have bad breath but it was from the protein drinks (though I had too many dairy products to be in ketosis).

I'm almost 5 weeks out and I'm still dealing with some pain on my left side. I just saw my surgeon for my 1 month post op appt. He said it is probably muscular and is giving me pain cream so I can still function at work. Keep your team informed about your situation, everyone is different. I am a little happy the band didn't happen bc you have to work out 7 days a week and I am in nursing school 25+ hrs a week and work in a hospital 40+ hrs a week. Plus I just hate working out. I have been working towards the sleeve since may and now I feel like I'm starting all over. I have an appt with a dietitian in 2 weeks and a sleeve nutrition class nov 6. I feel like they keep telling me " one more session" and I'm sick of it. And now my surgery will probably not happen before the new year so I'm going to be soooo in debt with a new insurance deductible. How long after the wls team said ok did it take for insurance to approve then how long after that did you all have surgery?

Very nervous about 2 weeks liquid diet.
Lura Dean replied to Mariggle's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
We'll get through it. Kinda bums me that some people only have to do a few days and others have to do 2 weeks! -
Reversals are actually done a lot more often than you would think. I may be doing this by the end of the year. There are Facebook groups for gastric bypass takedowns and support. Lots of people have had mechanical issues and needed reversals. They are definitely high risk, however if they can take you apart, they can put you back together, although I wouldn't go to just anyone that's for sure!. I'm personally experiencing malnutrition, and severe weight loss (and no, none of this is my doing. I did all that I was supposed to over the last 16 years). Had a revision in September, and still having complications. Seeing my doctor again next week to discuss next step, which is most likely the takedown. They also do them on those who continue to get ulcers, or severe dumping (which I also get from everything I eat). In regard to weight gain from the reversal, it's one's choice to eat badly and put the weight back on, just like you can start making bad choices with rny and never expect to stretch your stomach. It happens in most cases. I learned a lot about eating well, healthy/organic, locally grown as often as possible. (wish I knew then what I know now, I regret my surgery a lot) I would actually give anything to eat a salad or a piece of fish right now, instead I am getting tpn through a picc line. So even though you follow the plan, like I did it doesn't mean you wont have issues.

I was banded 4/13th. I received 1-1/2 CC at first fill. Went for second fill 6/23 and was given 1 cc. Thought I hit my sweet spot but that only lasted 1 day. I noticed I was feeling tighter and tighter. By the 3rd day, I couldn't even sip water. Later that night it was painful to even swallow my own saliva. What a horrible night I had. Went to the dr. next morning and he removed 1 cc and I felt instant relief. (I also lost 10lbs in 3 days). My dr says 2-1/2 cc is too much for me. I am supposed to go back in 2 weeks for another 1/4cc fill. I am scared to death. I think I'll stay at this fill level until I notice myself gaining weight. So my 2 cents-- You might want to get a slight unfill. It's not fun being unable to swallow your own saliva.
