    Just Banded On 8/07...ouch!

Hey Michelle..thanks for the compliment...OKAY now I see what you mean...well unfortuanately they didnt band our brains...giggling....so we still have that same desire for pizza or whatever but think of this...soon and TRUST me it will be sooner before you know it...you will be able to eat a slice of pizza the great thing about it is that you will have 1 or 2 NOT 10 or 12 LOL....I still have an appetite and when I get ready to eat I think DANG I AM SO hungry I could eat 1/2 this burger or 1/2 this Pizza but that is the beauty of the band because once you start you quickly figure out that 1 piece will definitly satisfy that hunger and you will feel full!

3 weeks out- Is spicy food a no-no?

Hi there. I was banded on Nov. 19, 2005 and I think it is o.k. to eat spicy foods as long as you do not get a lot of heartburn from it. My doctor said that chili is one of the best sources of protein. This week I had some refried beans and they were very spicy and well I threw up until they were all gone. I do not think that was due to them being spicy though. Good luck with your band and I hope you love it as much as I love mine.

    Update...

Well, I go for my seminar at WeightWise on Saturday and am so excited. I'm worried that I may have to postpone havin my surgery . I got laid off last Thursday from my job where I have worked for over 10 yrs. It was completely unexpected and now don't know if it's financially responsible to use the $$ in my savings for surgery or if I should save every penny until I have a new job?? One part of me says, do it, I may never have a better time. The other side of me says, it's financially irresponsible to be spending that kind of $$ on something that is optional. I'm afraid if I wait that I may never have the $$ in hand again to do it. Not to mention when starting a new job, it may be a while before I can schedule a weeks vacation. On top of losing my job, I am also moving. I signed the contract to sell my house last Tuesday and then lost my job on Thursday. Not sure what's going to happen now. I was buying my grandmothers house but not sure what's going to happen now as I doubt any bank will loan me $$ when I don't have a job. I may have to do the lease to buy or rent it from my my grandmothers estate until I get settled with a new job. ARG!!! I am so stressed!!

  5. OK guys I need your opinion…. Here’s the deal, I went for a fill in June to come away with nothing, they could not find the port. OK I can deal with that. I went again Sept 1st, still unable to find / get into, what they thought was the port. They send me to fluoro to check to make sure my port was not flipped, it’s not. I was told even though I’ve lost 65 lbs I was still to fat to get to the port because they didn’t have long enough needles. (They only have 2 inch needles) I can deal with this too. Well… Where you come in is, I found another Dr. who does his under fluoro if needed. His fills are $130.00 his fluoro a extra $350.00 (not by his choice). I saw him on Sept 17th. After 1 hour of repeated poking he managed to put in 2 cc’s but when I stood up the needle came out. So he quit. He tells me when that if I would have had him do a sleeve I wouldn’t be having this problem. He also tells me, I need to have the excess fat carved off if I want to have easier future fills. A sort of tummy tuck and when I get to goal have another one. He also said my line is in front of my port and my port is to low…..He wants to reposition my port, while on the table. My question for you all is …. Does it sound like he just wants my money…. Have any one of you had this problem…. If my line is in front of my port don’t you think the other fluoro tech would have told me this??? This procedure all together cost me $570.00.… Fill, Fluoro, Fuel, and not to mention the 10 hours of drive time. I’m now wondering if I should just go back to Mexico and see my surgeon…. What do you all think????? I need your opinions….. And to add to this I really like the Dr.

Congratulations on completing Options. I don't know how long yours lasted, but mine was 6 mos long! After referral to the surgeon, the wait was about 6 weeks I think, then it went pretty fast. I was in the hospital 2 or 3 days, went back to the surgeon 10 days later and got cleared for soft food. My surgery was at Harbor City. They offered me South LA first, but I chose to wait for a certain surgeon at Harbor City. I remember waiting for that call from the surgeon's office for that first appt. I thought they would never call! Now it seems so long ago, and I forget I even had the surgery. It's hard to wait, but your journey is just beginning and you are farther along than a lot of people at Kaiser! I hear there are so many waiting they can't keep up. Good luck on your surgery date. Your life is going to change like you can't even imagine. To me it's a feeling like winning the lottery after losing the weight. Every day I wake up excited to put on all my new clothes. Don't get discouraged during your recovery. It's not that fun, but sooooo worth it.

    Just wanted to share!

Wonderful for you! I am 19 days out from surgery and have lost 25 lbs. I found some clothes in my closet that I never wore because I bought them and then quit smoking so gained weight and they were too tight. Now they fit beautifully! My hairdresser noticed yesterday I've lost weight. Others are commenting they can see it! I just know I feel better. And I haven't taken my diabetes medication in over a week! My fasting blood sugars are within normal range! We are well on our way! If it seems slow going just remember the slow weight loss is usually the permanent weight loss!
  11. I was banded on 9/10/10 in Dallas,Tx. I am new to this journey. I had my first fill on 10/5/10. I start real food tomorrow. I am afraid I won't have any restriction. It seems as though I can eat most anything. I haven't had any problems so far. Just waiting for that restriction, getting a little frustrated. I have read it may take a week or so for restriction. Sounds strange to me, this I don't understand. You would think you would have restriction immediately or not at all. As I said, I am new at this and waiting for my next fill in 4 weeks:glare:
  12. My sister had a Bypass, I got a band many years later. She had severe complications which resulted in about 5 surgeries to try to fix and almost died because of the complications. She is thankful she did have the surgery, however they do repipe your insides which if you eat things with too much sugar or something that doesn't agree with you then it can cause "Dumping"syndrome which is a massive case of diarrhea and it just comes out, or at least it did in her case. She also is not supposed to eat various foods, corn, sodas, and some other things too. It alters the absorption of both foods and medications, now when she has to be medicated it takes a Horse's dose for her to feel anything. Having the band, alot of people can eat whatever they want but you are restricted on the amounts. There are some that cannot eat certain foods, but for every one person who cannot eat something the other 10 seem to be able to. It also does not alter the absorption of medication or nutrients in your food. There is no repiping of your insides, it is just restricted which can be reversed if needed. She also after a huge depression issues overdosed on a medication intentionally. With the bypass they are unable to pump your stomach in this situation. The Gin she washed down the pills with is what saved her life because that somehow kicked her liver into overdrive to help her body burn through the medication. However she was OUT for several days. I will add that this was after the death of our Dad, her fiance cheating on her and dumping her in the hospital on two occasions (what a winner huh) and being told she would never be able to have children because she couldn't have babies. I will also note that she has son that will turn 5 in October!! With a band they can remove the Fluid in order to get to the stomach in case they need to pump the stomach.. however.. hopefully NObody needs this info.

How do I tell my children?

My kiddos were 16, 13, 6, and 4 when I had my surgery. I worried a great deal because my 16 year old had in the past actually been hospitalized for an eating disorder (she's 6 years recovered now at the age of 19) and I worried a lot about how the rapid weight loss would affect her. So I was very honest with her about it and we talked a lot before I committed to do it. I didn't want to do it if it would have the slightest negative impact on her. I'm happy to say she's been encouraged by my journey to get healthy and it was a positive experience for all of us. So, to answer your question, I told my two teens what surgery I was having. They were part of the process. But it was always framed in the context of me getting healthy in the fastest way possible so I could live a long life with them. My younger 2 know that I had surgery, but I didn't give them specifics. Actually it's funny because now when they see older pictures of me, they recognize me, but my daughter says she doesn't remember that "version" of me. So they know I've been on a journey to get healthy,b ut I don't think at 4 and 6, they needed the details. Whatever you decided to do, just keep the communication open and you'll be fine! I mean, for sure your older child will notice the drastic change in your eating habits and your fast weight loss. You don't want them to feel as though you are hiding anything from the.
  14. First and foremost- congratulations- You have lost about 10 lbs per month and that is no small task. Well done! Now, you may want to take a good hard look at what you are eating. It's not what you should it, it's what you are eating. do you have any idea how many calories and how much protein you are getting? Are you drinking at least 64 ounces of fluid? Are you exercising? Are you eating a little more now than the first 3+ months? all this needs to get taken into consideration. Send me an email with a days food journal and let's see what you're choices are like. I'd love to help you, but them comes form interaction between us, not just me telling you what you "should" be eating...Hope this makes some sense.
  15. Hi sleevers Im 10 days out from surgery and have been losing weight. But im right now very depressed as i see others enjoying nice food. I am a real foodie and currently regret doing this. Still its done now. Painful drinking and very uncomfortable feeling. I would recommend having a good hard think if you can avoid this surgery. Im paying the price for lack of discipline in the past. I can already do things like put my shoes on which was hard to do. At the moment my life is dull and boring. Will post how i go . DeeJay Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    high wbc in preop labs

I have leukocytosis, so I know what elevated wbc count is like. Luckily I was diagnosed with it 10 years ago so it's noted and highlighted in my chart. If you were sick this month, they might still be up from it. Since you normally have elevated wbc, maybe see if you have leukocytosis, too, and have them highlight it in your chart, as well.

    Side sleeper

I'm also a side sleeper. I can fall asleep on my back but eventually I'm on one side or another. Turning about every 60-90 mins. I was stuck on my back for about the first 10 days, then I started propping a pillow on my side so it would "catch" my belly if it flopped over. Finally started sleeping without the pillow about 3 weeks out. While sleeping on my back, my back ached every morning and I never slept very well. Was so happy to have found the pillow trick. Good luck with ur surgery!

    Insanity Workout Anyone?

Hah, loved Insanity workout and actually taught it at a gym for a bit before my injury which led to depression and weight gain. I haven't been cleared for workout yet (10 days post op) but I can't wait. When I get cleared I'll let ya know Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

So, Today I Found Out That...

I have a mild hiatal hernia. Went to pre-op appt today. Can you believe hernia surgery is more expensive than gastric sleeve?! Anyway, surgery date is sept 14. So far, 10 lbs down
  20. I've never figured out how you can make a meal last for 30 minutes and still have it hot. So I wouldn't worry about it. Just eat your cream of wheat while it's hot and enjoyable, but be aware that you aren't just scarfing it down. Savor every spoonful and if it's gone in 10 minutes, it's gone. .
  21. Hey there! I had a extended tummy tuck, breast lift with silicone implants, lipo of the thighs, tummy, flank and back last month. Cost $18,950 . I was also a self pay lapbander $18.500. I am getting a thigh lift next month cost $6,400. For me my health and happiness is just as important as anything else I could or ever want or need. We did save and save for this but put it on a low interest credit card with reward points. I look at it this way, I will ALWAYS owe somebody something, either a mortgage, car payment, house tax bill something. At least with this I have added YEARS on to my life, I have added HAPPPPPPYYYY YEARS to my life. I am lucky to be financially well set so my "costs" will be paid off in no time but even if this was not the case I would do it again. You have one life to live, anything can happen. For me living my life today to the fullest, being the best that I can be, not settling for less than what makes me happy, which in turn makes my kids and hubby happier is what life is about. So I don't buy a brand new car next year.. ok.. that brand new car might last me 10 years.. this new body will last me the rest of my life YEEE HAAWWWW! Good luck and God Bless!
  22. Well better a little - had to get the food back out around 10:30 (4 hours after eating). It just wouldnt' really go down. Really exhausted today but sticking with liquids for the day as you suggested to give my stomach a break and tried warm tea for Breakfast to help with nausea. Didn't really help yet so I took a Zofran which did. Working from home again and hoping working from the couch / resting will help.

    CPAP

Thank you both for your thoughts. I'm still trying to stay vigilant and keep trying every night. Last night I took it off after an hour (longest it's taken me to fall asleep) because I wasn't falling asleep and the leaks were killing me. After I took it off I was asleep within 10 minutes.

    CPAP

I've only been using my CPAP for about 10 days. I have the pillows. They don't bother my nose so much, but I wake up with dry mouth and a headache. I think I'm actually sleeping less than I did without it. But, I am breathing better all day. I have asthma so maybe it's helping that? Going to call tomorrow to see if I can do anything to get rid of dry mouth and headaches. Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Countdown to band day!

Hi Sharon, I am supposed to go in to surgery at 10 am but of course like they told you, that can change. I am so anxious for this to get moving. I know we will be on a strictly liquid diet. I was so ticked on this one...first few days had nothing but liquids, then found out that I could have vegetables and salads (of course nothing except vegetables on the salads). I just use lettuce and tomatoes and a spritzer salad dressing on it which satisfies me just fine. I have a protein shake in the morning and a salad at night with a lot of crystal light and green tea during the day and evening as well as a few sugar free popcicles in the evening. Now that diet after the surgery....hmmm! Of course I may not feel like eating anything. My main problem is drinking enough fluids and exercising enough. I have a problem with one of my feet and it sure makes it difficult to exercise and I cannot go swimming until it heals. Hopefully if I get enough of this weight off, it will heal enough to allow me to be able to swim in a public pool. I haven't had the privilege to speak to anyone who has had the surgery except those on these message boards and for the most part, they don't seem to think the pain is too bad. I am not thinking about that too much, I am concerned about how I will be about eating and keeping the food down or getting it down. I detest throwing up. That is my biggest fear. We must keep in contact as much as possible ok? I have only been to one support group meeting...hospital is a few towns away and with this foot (my right foot, wouldn't you just know) it makes driving a problem. I can call you if you want. Jodi
