  1. UPDATED INFO: I did not have to do the 5 year weight loss statement. I had to: 6 month diet with office notes and letter from doctor supervising weight loss-I did Medifast, which sucked but works if you can tolerate it. psych eval-found my psych with google search.-cost me $200 for the testing and report (insurance did not cover, even though THEY require it. Would that be ironic or just stupid?), $10 co-pay nutritional eval-found my nutritionist with google search too. she sends a report to doctor $10 co-pay bariatric rehab class-at the local hospital, about what to expect and exercise. Pretty basic stuff. $55 seminar with surgeons-very informative-no cost Best of luck, and I hope I get approved soon!

First Cruise since the Band~~~~Got to get ready! Mentally!

I too am heading on a cruise to the Bahamas this week. I too am nervous about the eating aspect. I am one year out from surgery and have lost 115 lbs. I also found out I am pregnant this week so all the fears of gaining the weight back is on my mind constantly. I guess all the calories from the margarita's I had planned on taking in won't be happening so I probably will not gain what I thought I might. Good luck with your cruise I hope you come back 10 lbs. lighter.

Is there any help for gas after lapband surgery?

I did have my surgery on 10-14-08 and have lost 52 pounds! I now have a problem with horrible gas and constipation. My surgeon told me to take a laxative to start off with and then take a daily stool softener. The problem with that is I can no longer swallow pills and have to grind up my BP meds and have gotten most of my vitamins in either liquid or chewable. There are no chewable stool softeners that I can find. I tried Pedialax stool softener that is supposed to be fruit punch flavored. You mix it with juice so I tried mixing 8 oz of diet V8 splash and that did not help the taste nor did adding 8 more oz of splash. I took 3 sips and was on the verge of throwing up and poured the rest of the bottle as well as the juice mixture down the drain. Now I have so much gas and don't go to the BR unless I chew up some ex-lax. I am seeing the bariatric md where I live at Tuesday and am going to see what he says. Is anyone out there having these types of problems? What if anything can you recommend that will help? I am desperate as I fear that strainining will lead to a surgery of a different kind.
  4. I have been getting small fills of .10, .15, .25 and I like doing it that way to creep up. I have been in the green zone the last 2 months. I lost 10 pounds since my last visit so it is time for more. I will be getting .25 on Thursday for maintenance. Small fills are very good for some people.
  5. I'm going 10/22/13, by myself, but feel confident. I also have been working with Cristy. Did you get a date or still contemplating?
  6. I had my surgery on March 19th without any problems and have felt really good other than some tenderness at my incisions... however, I have also not felt hungry at all. I am 10 days post surgery and on full liquids, including cream based Soups. I have been eating at Breakfast lunch and dinner because it was time to eat, not due to any feelings of being hungry. I realize that for a few days post surgery it's normal to not feel hungry due to swelling in the stomach and esophogus, but after 10 days you would think some of that would return. Yesterday I decided to not eat till I actually felt hungry. At 8pm I gave up on that "test" and had some tomato Soup. I am drinking 2 Protein Shakes a day, as well as taking chewable muli-vitamins, I haven't felt full or hungry and am wondering if anyone else has had this type of reaction to surgery? I keep reading about band hell where people are feeling super hungry and I've had nothing even close to that. I have lost 26 pounds since the day of surgery and I am getting concerned. Thanks Veronica

    Getting Depressed

I had surgery on July 18, and lost 10 lbs. post-op and 8 since than. I realize that this is a time for healing...so why be depressed. I'm thrilled with the 18 lbs. without my first fill which I don't get till Aug. 30. I think you have done fine.

    Starving

I can relate to how you feel. I was starving pre-op and now post-op. Just keep telling yourself (like I am) that this is necessary and is only temporary. I have survived 19 days now with no food. Most of the time, I am okay, but I have my moments that I am a miserable you know what!
  9. My employer also put in a 6 month, supervised diet qualification that I had to meet, but after I met that, I was submitted on a Wednesday and approved the following Monday. Surgery was scheduled for 10 days later. I was surprised at how quick it was.

    Regrets

I had my sleeve 10/8. I am having nothing but regrets. All I think about is food. I'm so depressed. I don't think going to a psychiatrist will help this as I have done it before and it didn't. I didn't think it would nearly be this hard as I was told a hormone gets removed that produces the need for hunger and cravings. We'll guess what, I am always hungry and am always craving bread, pasta, and pizza. I used to go out to eat all the time also and it's killing me not. I know someone a year out and she eats whatever she wants in moderation and is still losing. I don't know if I will get to this point. I just want real food. I haven't even got to purée yet. I am so depressed and need major help.

    Hernia question

Hernias can be anywhere from really painful to zero pain. The only way to know for sure is to be checked out. Most likely you have just strained something, so don't panic. If you develop screaming, debilitating pain... 10 out if 10.. go to the ER.

    Port scar opened up!

They told me too keep it clean and keep a bandage over it until I came in to see him. But if it hurt or had other changes to come it early. By the time I went in on Wednesday it had healed up again. I got my first on time. 3 cc's in a 10 cc band! All is well. Thanks!

    Feeling restriction??

I was the same way..I have had 3 fills and after the 3rd I finally had restriction...however, the really good restriction only lasted about 2 weeks than I was able to eat more again. after my 3rd fill I had a total of 7ccs in 10 cc band. My doctor told me most people start feeling restriction at around 7cc's. I still can eat close to 2 cups before feeling full. It depends on what I eat..somedays I feel more restriction than others and some meals I can eat more than other meals..I havnt figured it out yet. I got banded july 29th. before my 3rd fill and for the first few months after surgery I had no restriction! and it sucked! Im waiting for my 4th fill which is scheduled on Jan. 11th. I think this fill will get me at my sweet spot,at least I am hoping. I do get stuck occasionally now and can't eat a ton of food but I still can eat more than the half cup they reccomend. You will get there...before my 3rd fill I was freaking thinking I had 6cc with no restriction and that I may never get there ...but I thikn now with each fill I will feel a little more. I asked my doctor what happens when I get to 10cc?? and he said "not be able to drink water"..lol..so not saying everyone is like that but you may not feelgood restriction until closer to your max.

    Constipation

Hey all! So I'm 10 days post op and I have terrible constipation. Ive only had 2 BM post op, and both have been relatively painful. I've been taking colace at night but it doesnt seem to help. It seems like my Dr's diet progresses much quicker than everyone else's. Since the 4th post op day I've been on "full liquids" which on their list includes: mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, refried bean, pudding, grits, eggs, oatmeal, and several other things that really aren't full liquids. Knowing that I could hurt myself if I proceed too quickly I've made sure everything I consume is watered down to a liquid consistency. I'm wondering if the progression of my diet has anything to do with this. TIA for any advice :-) -A

    Sleeve Vet Diets

Before I say what I ate today I will say first that what I can eat at 16 months post op is nothing like what I was able to eat when I was at your present stage of recovery/progress. I am on vacation on the outer banks of NC. I have 20 oz water while I move about in the am waking up. I make coffee and have 16-20 oz depending on the cup I've got with me. I generally do a little light exercise like stretching or walking and then have 2 scrambled eggs, whole eggs with cheese and half and half with 1 slice of toast. I then don't eat for 3-4 hours when I have a greek yogurt and a protein or granola bar. 2-3 hours later I have a lunch meat sandwich that I might or might not finish. I then don't eat till dinner which is usually fish, chicken or steak in some fashion with non starchy veggies. Sometimes for desert I have fruit but if I've been a good exerciser I might have 2-3 fig newtons with milk. Now I know there are some people on this site that will assail what I eat but my nutritionist and doc love my numbers and my weight loss. I have plateaued higher than I want to however I've also added 10 lbs of muscle in the last 8 months and feel fantastic. I weigh every 2-3 days and never allow more than a 2 lb gain and am still losing about a pound every month or so. At your stage I was eating very , very little and it was ok. I couldn't eat much then or it hurt. I now only hurt if I'm not paying attention. Cake and cookies I never seem to overeat, but veggies? they just taste great and it's taken the last 3 months to figure out that I still need to portion out an amount of them and go very slowly while eating so I don't feel full. All in all it's a good thing. I never used to eat this much protein or veggies but I do now. Hope it helps.

    Drinking and Sleeve Postop

The main problem that people have with drinking post-op is due to swelling or spasms during the healing process. Not everyone runs into that though. Your capacity for liquids is not at ALL reflective of the size of your sleeve. Did you have a leak test post-op? I did and I could see quite clearly the way the barium went straight through my sleeve. Liquids just pass right through. Once you move on to purees and solids, you will DEFINITELY start to feel the restriction, since those things will actually sit in your stomach for some period of time. Here's a video of a gastric sleeve swallow test. You can see that the video is only 19 seconds long and the liquid just flows right through: http://youtu.be/K0GWL1Wtx30

    Rochester New York Anyone?

I had surgery 6-13-12 with omalley! I did not have a drain! I was in the hospital 2 nights! My staples came out at my 1 week appt. I think I was on liquids for about 10 days! 2 days after I got out of the hospital I went to a dance recital all day! And a 3 hr graduation at night! I was tired but I was ok! I brought everything I needed so that I still got what I needed! Just take it easy and listen to ur body! TAKE THE PAIN MEDS while ur out that day! Good luck
  25. For me, it's not about BMI, but how I physically and mentally feel. My doc didn't set a goal for me. He made it clear (by what he did NOT say) that my ultimate weight loss was up to me, not him. That felt pretty empowering. I picked 150 pounds as my goal, even though it was 10 pounds less than I'd weighed in the last 40 years. I remember feeling great at that weight in my early 30s. It also one pound heavier than "normal." (I am 5'5".) But mostly I just wanted to be mobile, feel better, wear normal-sized clothes, feel like my appearance reflected the person I truly am. Well, shockingly, I did reach 150 pounds. Then over the next eight months I lost another 15 pounds. And here I sit at 135 pounds. FYI, losing these last 15 pounds are what it took for my old, arthritic knees to finally stop hurting! Pre-op I'd never have thought this weight would look good on me. And it has taken a while for my eyes / brain to adapt to my new look. But now 135 feels and looks good to me. For me, it's not about my BMI -- but how I feel.
