Care to share any lap band stories?

Hi Jennifer - Yes you are worth it !!! I love my band for the great tool it is - I love me for doing the work that it take to lose the weight - I am 7 months out 76 lbs lighter. Feel 200% better and 10 yrs younger. I eat healthy 98% of the time - I exercise 3-5 days a week depending on my schedule - For me it hasn't been that hard - I went thru major surgery to get this tool - so my head is totally in the game - I know that I must make a lifetime lifestyle change in my eating and exercise habits - this is not a diet but a new way of life. It's not the magic cure to our issues with food but it is a geart tool to help control your portions. All you have to do is eat healthy and add exercise into your life and you will do great. For lunch had 1/2 soft taco - and brought my chilli relleno home for dinner - well guess what - I didn't want it -I wanted fish & veggies - so that's what I ate - I am no craving healthy foods .... Good Luck on your journey...

    starting from scratch!?

Hi All, Ok, well I am 10 days until my fill and although I am being good, I am so sure I am eating more than I was before. This is freaking me out and I am totally trying not to beat myself up. I am still riding my bike and walking, and feeling good, I haven't felt like this is a while. Anyways just checking in and hoping I make it through this without too much turmoil! Thanks again for the support. shannon

    Major Stuck Episode

I did call the surgeon's office today. They told me that as long as it was just one stuck episode, not to worry, but to stay on my liquids until my stomach felt better and when I went back to solids to be very mindful of bite sizes, chewing and to take my time. We all have to be reminded from time to time. I'll see them on October 10 for a fill (if I am ready).
  4. Hi all, I spoke with the infectuous disease doc today and the surgeon, and after being on Levaquin for 4 days my fevers still go up to 99.+ so....since the infection from my port has traveled up the tubing to the band, the band has to come out in order for all to heal properly. I have had a love/hate relationship with my band since Aug. 6th 2003 when I entered bandland. Despite the ups and downs, the pb'ings, too tight fills, too loose fills, things getting stuck, etc. I was glad to have lost almost 90lbs and had this experience and gained health and self confidence back. I am not sure if I will get rebanded, or opt to have the gastric sleeve done at a later time (at this point I don't qualify), but I thought my band would last forever and I am kind of sad. I am convinced that an improper fill proceedure in March '10 cause this entire fiasco, so please make sure that whoever does your fills does them properly, and INSIST on that they wear gloves, and use more than one needle if they can't get access to your port the first time!!!!!! I have an open wound that is healing, and now I have to lose my band. I am so upset, but make sure you are proactive when your fills are being done!!!!!

please help - in pain - am i stuck?

I was just banded on November 19 & luckily have not had anything like this happen. My question to anyone is does this kind of thing usuallly not happen right after you eat?? If I read this right it had been several hours since she had eaten.
  6. I agree with the virtual model thing it's so accurate!! Again being that we are similar in stats and I (as I have been told) are big boned...I remember being 200 lbs and in a size 10 jeans so when we are tall and large framed we tend to carry our weight better than someone with that weight and shorter. The funniest thing for me was when I went into do my presurgical upper GI and the technician said wow you look great how much weight have you lost so far and I told them I havn't even had the surgery yet and they had to go check the paperwork LOL. If you are like me I am very muscular as well so I tend to weigh more because of that but look like I weigh less. My best advice i could give you is not to compare yourself because as you lose weight your body looks much different. I just had a "guy" friend of mine who hasn't seen me since my surgery tell me I looked Fantastic and I am thinking in my head I weight 233 lbs how can I look fantastic LOL but you know what I am a size 14 now so that's much better than a 22-24 so I must look better right? Keep doing what you are doing...stick to the band rules and one day you are going to be like OMG look at me !!!!
  7. <table id="post1033972" class="tborder" align="center" border="0" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr valign="top"><td class="alt1" id="td_post_1033972" style="border-right: 1px solid rgb(217, 217, 217);"> Hey everybody, It has been about 10 months now since my surgery. I have lost 70lbs and am very happy. My problem is is that I have started a bad habbit again of eating wrong. The good thing is that I eat but I don't eat like I used to. I can't. My biggest problem is that I am constantly on the road and can't eat meals like everyone else. My job demands constant driving and making sure I get to my destinations on time. I can't slow down. So I resort to eating kettle cooked chips and eating a meal at the end of the night. NOthing is healthy for road travelers on the go. It is so frustrating. Also I love to eat ice cream. It is the best thing in the world. Question one about the band after I eat a meal is ice cream considered a liquid? Reason why I ask is because of the rule about not drinking one hour and a half? Also I find myself eating more food than usual and I don't feel full. Can my band get messed up if i am eating a lot of food and not feeling pain? Last question: Every week I get an episode where I have to throw up because I am still learning about certain foods that get stuck. eggs are the worst. I have had this problem for about 2 months. I am scared that my band is damaged or something. I guess I just need some insight. Can any one help? </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="alt2" style="border-style: none solid solid; border-color: -moz-use-text-color rgb(217, 217, 217) rgb(217, 217, 217); border-width: 0px 1px 1px;"> </td> <td class="alt1" style="border-style: none solid solid none; border-color: -moz-use-text-color rgb(217, 217, 217) rgb(217, 217, 217) -moz-use-text-color; border-width: 0px 1px 1px 0px;" align="right"> </td></tr></tbody></table>
  8. Don't get discouraged! My doctor said I should hope to loose 6 - 10 pounds a month. When your eating making sure you eat very slow, this allows your mind and stomach to relaize that it is not hungry. The hardest thing for me was to learn that i didn't have to feel full, just not hungry...there is a big difference. Once you get an adjustment you will also drop weight quicker...Set small goals for yourself. I started at 282 I was looking so forward to less than 2 1/2 (250). Once I hit that I started thinking how exciting the 10 pound increments were. It will come off, don't get discouraged!
  9. Most doctors (at least here in Maryland) won't do a fill until at least 6 weeks post-op. You may feel all healed up, but might not be. Don't rush it. I got my first fill at 6 weeks, 3ccs, and by evening even water gave me indigestion. The next day I called and met the doctor at the hospital and he unfilled about 1.5 ccs. Two weeks later in his office I reported that soft foods were okay, but I was having trouble with denser stuff. So he took out another cc. On my last visit, I said I am able to eat way more than 1/2 cup of food and I get hungry before 4 hours, but he talked me out of the fill since I was still losing and he said I was ahead of schedule for the band, bypass, and sleeve. So I have at the most 1cc in my band (a 14cc fill volume), and I am working on my head hunger. I do eat more than 1/2 cup, but I love salads (I put chicken, ham or turkey on it for a protein source) and am still slowly losing. I plateaued for a month or so, and now it is creeping down. I was on liquids before surgery (lost 25 pounds) and I lost 10 during the 6 month diet. The rest has come off since surgery on 3/25/08.

    Banded for 6 months-reflections

"Only" 40 pounds? 40 lbs is fantastic! When was the last time you lost 40 pounds this easily? Be proud of your accomplishment. Realize that some people lose faster or slower but that's them and you are you. There is always someone out there faster or taller or smarter or more talented than you. Who cares? This is NOT a competition. You have the right attitude. This is a tool, just a chunk of silicon. It doesn't choose to lose weight, YOU do. You are losing weight slow and steady, best possible way. This is not a diet. There is no "goal" where everything ends. You permanently changed the way you live, for the better. Things like food habits and activity are not things to do for a while, but as much a part of you as breathing. A few small tips that seem to work for me: I almost never watch TV in real time. We have a DVR and I always record so I can fast forward past commercials, especially food ones. If I find myself staring in the cupboard for a snack, I brush my teeth. The taste curbs my hunger for some reason. (ever drink orange juice tight after brushing? blech.) Otherwise, I'll go for a quick walk around the neighborhood. A lot of times that 10 minute delay gets my mind off of food, plus it's exercise that gets your metabolism speeded up. Buy an article of clothing that's you really like and is just a tiny bit too small. Try it on every couple of days. Avoid the scale for a few days too. (I never weigh myself, I just use my clothing fit and belt notches to track size loss.) Pick one thing you can't do today because of size that you really want to do and daydream a bit about it. Look at that nasty "before" photo you took. That scares me straight every time. Thomas Jefferson said: I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.
  11. I'm on day 5 of my 10 day pre-op diet....I'm suppose to be doing liquids...I've been really good so far...but yesterday I did take a can of heathy choice Soup and blend it in the blender...It tasted really good (considering I've only been drinking Protein shakes before this)... Would this be acceptable after banding? I was looking at my diet plan and on the 1st week it says I can eat baby food....So does this count? It was high in protein and low in Calories..But I wasn't sure how well my stomach would take it after the banding.

    Backache

I had shoulder pain bad after surgery for about 10 days. It waa just trapped air that would not move. My friend that was banded same week had back pain. We both took Advil 200 mg or liquid. It helped a bunch! Try heat and warm/hot showers. If that does not help Call your doctor! You might be sleeping wrong too? Hope you feel better!
  14. My goal is 110-114 (BMI 19-20) because I have a really bad back (I have big boobs). But I know that I will have loose skin at that weight. Or my other goal is 123 and a breast reduction. Haven't decided yet.

Got it wen the big bookstore here went out of business, it was tge last one, Luke waiting for me. Guess God wants me to start reading it today. On week 2 of pre-op had a meltdown yesterday Nd ate 6 cheetos Nd liked the bag LOL..... Praying for strength, hope ur feeling better too
  16. I just had surgery 10/21 and my family want or barely help. My house is a mess, I feel claustrophobic. You would think when I start cleaning, cooking, taking care of toddler (cause she can't care for herself), walking the dog, laundry, etc; you would think someone will step up. Then when I ask I get "not right now" then later "I forgot". I'm so freaking frustrated. I can't get no one to take me where I need to go. My income has been delayed no fault of my own. So I have no money. The people I have always been there for are not here for me. I can't believe what I'm going through. I had a plan. What the freak happened. I feel like I'm in a twilight zone. Just had to vent. Time for some serious praying and shutting down some negative vibes.

    Too thin? Nope.

She's about my height and weighs a few pounds less. But she has always been thin. I'm new at being thin and since she has known me for over 20 years, she may take a while to get used to my new body. I'm hoping to be able to maintain my weight loss for the long term. I know that most people gain a few from their lowest weight and I actually purposely lost below my goal just in case that happened. I'm not overly concerned about how I look. I'm finding that I have better stamina when I exercise than I did 10-15 pounds ago. If I can maintain it, I think this is a good place to be. If I gain as I add calories, I'm going to do what I can to gain the least possible.
  18. So I have been to Steve & Barry's 3 times now and each time I am terribly disappointed. Sara Jessica Parker's new line of clothing "Bitten" is supposed to fit women sizes 2-22; however, SHE LIES!!! I am a size 16/18 now and I couldn't find anything that would fit. Clothing sizes can be so frustrating. In one store you can be a 16 and in the next store you are a 20. It sucks when the scale is going down but your clothing is not reflecting it. Oh well maybe in 20lbs I will see the size change. I am beginning to wonder if I will ever make an 8/10.

I feel like this is a milestone!!!

It seems like there are a lot of us getting banded tomorrow. It feels like a milestone and it is a milestone because we are starting our new lives. I have the whole range of emotions that others have spoke of but mostly I'm just ready to get this over with. Good luck to all the 10/16 bandsters! I'll be looking forward to hearing your stories, and of course, I'll be sure to post mine as soon as I'm up to it!

    Where are you from?

I saw this on a couple of other monthly forums and thought it would be neat to do here. Where are you from? I'm in Niceville, FL (yes, it is nice to live here:-). It's in the panhandle, between Pensacola and Panama City, 10 minutes from Destin and Fort Walton Beach.

    What next!???

Hi Charlie Farley, (great name!) I could so have done with your post last night! I was up all night vomiting my saliva, in agony and so thirsty. I went to the hospital this morning and my very good friend there (in charge of patient care) called my surgeon down immediately. He had me in for an upper GI within 10 mins and after another 20 mins of locating my port he accessed it and removed all of my fill. He said I have so much inflammation, liquid and infection around the port that his needle wasn't long enough to get through it all so he had to physically manipulate the port to access it to drain the fill. I had a couple of shots of anesthesia. He was so wonderful and I felt immediate relief. I vomited on the table twice and the staff and my surgeon had such lovely bed side care. I am so grateful to them. I didn't have barium but something else I forget the name now. It was clear and bitter tasting. With a mint taste. Totally disgusting however. I did watch it slowly pass through my stomach. Even without the fill it took a long time to go through in drops. I have severe inflammation around my stoma and the bottom of my esophagus.. so am on Clear liquids for a few days and then puree for a week. I can handle that. I was so desperate for a drink when we had finished. It took me half an hour to drink a small can of sports drink (without carbonation). It was the most wonderful drink I have had in years!!!! .. it still hurts a lot to drink and I feel as though I will throw up but know with tiny sips it will go through. I have no slippage of the band and the port hasn't flipped again so I am VERY VERY happy right now. Exhausted but happy!... thank you so much for your post. I truly appreciate and so pleased to hear you are on the mend!! I am off for some well deserved broth now!! GOSH the relief of knowing I am ok is incredible!!
  23. Yesterday I (day off), slept in till 0900 - got up and piddled around with minor everyday chores - ate brunch around 1230. Had a cheese stick around 1500. Finished work on laptop and went over to sit on the couch and watch tv. Around 1600, I felt something at my band area that scared me a little. It was like a twist or flip (like the feeling that you would get if a 6-7 mo. fetus moved). It did not hurt or even present with any measure of pain or uncomfortability. I was just aware of it and have never experienced it before. I did not get to have supper until between 1930 and 2000. I ate supper without any problem whereas everytime I've eaten since being banded on 2/26/10 - I have felt some restriction. A burning in the esophagus, mild backwash, a feeling of being full with out eating much at all.(and I did push it to the limit) Well, last night I felt no restriction...I kept waiting for the burn or something, but... I do not have any fill in my band. I am scheduled to have my first fill 4/5/10. This afternoon I did have to go into work, and while I had brunch at 1100 - I did feel a little restriction. When I was allowed solid food I feel like I did/do overeat. Has anyone experienced this feeling before?:tt1: I am going to ask my MD at the appt to get my first fill, but that happened last evening and the office is closed today...so I was wondering what it felt like when your band slips. I have heard that it is painful and makes you throw-up in time. I hate for this to unnerve me, but the unknown can do that.:eek:Remember...I have no fill, and this is the first time that I have had this feeling and had virtually no pain. Thank you Betsy for giving me your suggestions/advise.:smile2:.....

    diabetes help

The band has helped me too. I was at 2 shots aday. Now since July 19 06 Ive just had to take about 7 shots all together. You will need to work with your doctor . Sounds like you were "borderline" so now you will be on the good side of the line. edie
  25. Wanted to be sure all of you bandsters or those of you interested in learning about bands were aware of the NW Weight Loss Conference in Portland OR 10/28 through 10/30. Check it out here. Dr. Emma Patterson will be speaking and Sandi and Gloria of Banded Living will be conducting a table talk and presenting a break out session. Look forward to meeting some of you there!
