May 2024 Surgery Buddies 😁
Calli replied to Bypass2Freedom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also a lap band 2010. But surgeon requires removal of band -heal for 6 weeks- then revision. So it has been a really long year for me so far. But now only 8 days from rny. I bought a weighted heat pad with levels of heat and an auto off function. It is wonderful. Dont plan on taking it to hosp. But will definitely come in handy at home how is everyone handling the daily meal for your significant others? Today my husband called me at work and asked mento pick him up pizza on my way home!!!! Rude… but he does need to eat and i dont want to cook. Lol. -
At the end of the day I think your post illustrates the best in a bariatric patient. The intense thought process considering all of the possible complications for getting, revising, or removal of the surgery. Going into this blind after watching a few "My 600# life" shows is about the worst thing one can do (And yes, I watch the show myself). It sounds to me that your mind is in the right place - considering what is going to improve your life the most, and yet doing lots of research on it. I applaud you for your research and I am very sorry for what seems like an awful number of years. I'm only 3 weeks out from my revision from a band to a RNY, but there were a number of reasons I went with a RNY over the sleeve. One of which is the possibility to do a reversal. Yes, it is not without complications, and no, it is not a complete reversal, but yes, it is still possible. With the sleeve? not so much. I would imagine that something as complex as a reversal would be quite variable between patients - what reason for each reversal is probably drastically different. So while I do think it is really good to see how outcomes were, I would postulate that your surgeon is probably going to be the best to trust. I was told that my surgeon was very "conservative" when it came to revisions. I was told he would go in and remove the band, and if things were really bad from scarring, he would not do the revision, and instead allow me to heal for 3 months before coming in and doing the revision. Maybe have a frank talk with your surgeon and make the same request. Maybe when he goes in, there is an obvious problem that can be fixed without actually reversing the procedure? Just throwing out another idea, if there is someone in your life that you trust your life with, consider filling out a medical power of attorney, and have a long conversation with them about your desires. Then, if doing the surgery the doctor would have a person to turn to and present both options...Your medical power of attorney, knowing your intents, could make the decision instead of a doctor who has spent an insignificant amount of time with you determining your interests. For my revision surgery, I did the above with a family member, so I'm not recommending something I didn't do myself. I will be praying for you and I wish you the best outcome, no matter what needs to be done to improve it!

Lucky #7 are still going strong !!!

Hi ladies. I hope you all had and are having a good day. Yesterday was a not so busy day with Jaimi. We had an afternoon playdate and then I had a ladies night of "crafting." Though I didn't do any project, just went for the company. Had a great time. Food yesterday.....hmmm. Why do I have such a hard time remembering from day to day? SF/FF latte, 2 protein shakes, 1/4 c wild/brown rice, a couple turkey swiss roll-ups that came back. I did manage to get 60 oz of water in. This morning Jaimi woke me up with a fever and a sore throat. When I finally got her to take some tylenol she went back to sleep for a couple of hours. The poor thing just sobbed that her throat hurt so bad. When I looked in her throat her tonsils are ginormous yet again. So, we went back to the doc this morning but the quick test came back not strep. They are sending it to culture for a couple of days because the quick test isn't always accurate I guess. For now it's just rest and tylenol. Poor little darling. Jeff took Nick to therapy today. He really is having some behavior problems. The doc thinks its because of Michael leaving so we will see. I was going to take him but Jeff preferred to take him over staying home with the dear little sick one. Imagine that. Hopefully we'll have some good news when he gets home. Karla, we will never be free of our addiction. You know that, but it's so easy to fall back. Same way that mentally ill people think they have control after being on their meds for awhile, or drug addicts think they can just take one hit. Why are we our own worst enemies? It's crazy. At crafting last night we were talking about a book called "Made to Crave." I thought of you while we were talking about it. It has to do with food addiction and that what we are really needing is a fulfilling relationship with God. You might try checking it out. It might make you feel better about the faith conversation we were having at the beginning of the week. After I finish my current book I'm going to download it. I also thought of you as on of my other friends there was telling about her problems similar to your female parts. She was so funny about it. She said when they did her last surgery they left a couple of staples in and so instead of having an inviting woman part (her words) she has a "snapping turtle." She is going to Denver in a couple of weeks for surgery and will have to spend 8 weeks on complete bed rest. She was so funny. Reminded me of you. Janet, you always have just the right thing to say. Love you! Have fun with the kiddos. I'm sure in a couple of days you will be ready for them to leave...you love your private world. But, enjoy it while it's here. As much pain we have all seen the last few months with loved ones being diagnosed with cancer, or car accidents, or all the other nutso things happening, we need to make that extra effort to enjoy the time we do have with each other. Candice, you are just becoming a musical sensation up there, aren't you? How much fun is that? Retirement has been so good for you. I love that. Karri, welcome back. I know how hard that first post is. It took a lot of strength to make it. Obviously I know because it took me a LONG time to find the courage to do it myself. However, this is our family and we all understand how horrible you must be feeling about your band. I don't think any of us can imagine the fear. I know it is a hard decision. Heck, I've been putting it off for well over a year. I am sure that I need to revise. I know that I need to be able to eat real solid protein and that I will never be healthy without it. But....it's so scary and frustrating and if you're anything like me you spend time thinking "I messed this up, why won't I mess that up." That's just our own little devil talking to us and trying to win the only way it knows how. We talked last night so I know you know my thoughts. I agree with Janet. I wouldn't go anywhere but to Wasa's doc for a revision. We do understand the fight and you are in the exact right place. We love you. We've missed you. Welcome back. I hope you will feel good about posting through your struggles here. No tough love from me. Just unconditional love and support. Hugs my friend. Welcome home! Okay...now off to find something soft for Jaimi to eat. Have a beautiful day ladies. When does Phyl get back? I really need to get some help for my memory. It sucks. My forgetter just keeps getting better though. -
So to clarify, do you mean the thigh lift with the groin incision or the thigh lift where the incision runs down the inside of your leg to your knee? I had the groin incision version done- eh, I wasn't a fan so far. My doctor is going to do a revision at my next surgery. It seems like you get the best result with the version that has the scar to your knee, but then of course you have the trade-off with the scar. Either way- plastics are the bees' knees, so if you can afford it, totally go get a consultation. I am a HUGE fan of my doctor, and an even bigger fan of the results from my other plastics procedures.

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?
Patrick M replied to Tazwella's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just had a revision from band to sleeve 17 days ago. I have lost 26 pounds, which is faster than my weight loss with the band. However, my rapid loss is due to reflux which has plagued me from day one post op. Hiccups are very irritating and getting proper calories/protein is a problem. My Dr. says it just takes time and is complicated by a large hiatal hernia repair. -

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?
Tazwella replied to Tazwella's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My band was removed in April and my sleeve is scheduled for August. I wonder if it's been long enough that I'm considered a revision. I've gained 20 pounds since the band removal so I wonder if my metabolism is normal again. -
Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?
Alex Brecher replied to Tazwella's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
ladivaluz806, Congratulations on your 30-lb weight loss and your smaller size! Revisions can lose weight more slowly than first-timers, but you are doing great, whether or not you feel like you are losing weight more slowly than non-revision patients. You’re on track to hit your goal within well under a year, and that’s something very few patients can do! It sounds like you have a good attitude about this. Savor the process and be proud of yourself, and take notes of what works so well for you so you can refer to your notes once you hit maintenance! -
Much slower weight loss when revision from lapband to bypass
Doc'sWife replied to Pinkgirl1234's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Wow that weight loss to me is awesome!!! I'm getting ready for revision and I don't remember losing a thing close to that in so short of time. Reading those that have lost 17-20lbs a month scares me a little actually, even though I know for surgery it could be a person short term normal. I've never lost that much so quickly. You sound be proud of yourself. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Much slower weight loss when revision from lapband to bypass
Tingting Wang replied to Pinkgirl1234's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I haven't had my revision yet, but I would expect the cravings to still be there after surgery, as I have heard many patients say that "they operated on my stomach not brain", brain still wants to do what it had been doing, that's why we have to change our way of looking at food/ relationship with food and learn to make different choices for life so we don't fall back in those bad habits and end up regaining the weight. I know it's easier said than done and i know it's a battle we have to fight all our life. How are you feeling overall? Have you lost anything with the pre op diet? I think 10 lbs being 8 days out is still great! Overall I feel okay. Just incision area became red and really itching. My pre op diet lost about 9 pounds -

We'll be here for you. My mom told my decision to revise to VSG instead of getting another band was "reckless". So, I know how you feel. You just lean on us, and we'll be your cheerleaders from afar. Don't let anyone get ya down. I'd say show them some of the before and after pics, but they probably wouldn't believe we are the same people. -
My Lap Band caused Esophageal Cancer
pjlewis replied to Rockin' Robyn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have actually had issues with my lapband, weight loss, food getting stuck, throwing up daily, and now dealing with all of the testing related to erosion and/or Barrett's complications. I was never told what "full" would feel like, not like an alien wanting to pop out of my chest, gag reflex and bolting to the restroom. I wasn't told that I wouldn't know what food would trigger it or when it would happen. I was told my insurance would cover follow up visits but it didn't. It started in 2008 and I am here now. Back at my original weight, having only lost 35 lbs originally, being approved for removal and sleeve revision only to find out that even with insurance, my portion would be around $13,000. I am considering a lawsuit for the initial cost, removal and any treatment that will come from what I am also facing. I hope your treatment works well and you get better asap. -
I had a band placed in 2011. Worst medical decision I ever made. I caused major problems ... Acid reflux, night coughing, and more. In the last three or so years I had horrible doubling over pain at least 3-5 days a week. After a gastro did an EGD on me he found gastritis and esophagitis to where my pouch opening to the stomach was nearly closed due to inflammation. He referred to to a Bariatric surgeon suggesting a revision the the sleeve. I ended up having an emergency revision to gastric bypass. I did not choose the LB removal only because of weight regain. My surgeon said that the sleeve would make my GERD worse so I chose the RNY. No More GERD! No More Pain either! I feel great! During the surgery he found my stomach high in my chest due to a hiatal hernia caused by the band. He also did repairs to the esophagus (was in an S shape). Also my port was nearly detached. My new bariatric surgeon’s Center for Bariatric Excellence no longer places Lapband... but does a lot of removals and revisions due to serious so many complications.

My insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery. I was trying (not very successfully) to ask, in regards to this thread, is one considered a revision of it's been 3 years since the removal and, therefore, possibly slower weight loss? Or is a revision when you have band removed and sleeve surgery at the same time?

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?
Fatty McFatster replied to Tazwella's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I lost 115 pounds during the first year that I had the band. Unfortunately, I slowly started gaining the weight back and complications eventually forced me to have the band emptied (and I gained all of my weight back). On November 20th I will be having the band to sleeve revision surgery. I would LOVE to have the same weight loss during the first year as I did with the band, but I am thinking it will be slower this time around. I would still be happy with 1 pound a week though because at least that would have me headed in the right direction. -
Much slower weight loss when revision from lapband to bypass
Djmohr replied to Pinkgirl1234's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
@@Pinkgirl1234 You are doing fantastic! It took me 18 months to lose 147lbs. There were some months in the very beginning where I lost about 20 but there were many many months where I lost less than 10 lbs. in fact I had a couple of months where I lost less than 5. I did not have a revision went straight for bypass. I think the great thing about losing it a bit slower is that you really are forced to be very diligent about your diet which builds very good longer term habits. At least that is what I have told myself. My husband and children point how my choice of food has changed for the better. My youngest son who is very fit has even learned some great habits from me. He worked hard at staying fit before but has learned better nutrition from me. Who would have thought I could teach good nutrition? I was 310lbs and malnourished! I think the slower you lose, the more you are forced to focus on your behaviors. Now I am just hoping to learn to maintain. I have not figured out my sweet spot yet. Best of luck to you but you really are doing fantastic! -

I too also had the lapband to gastric bypass revision surgery. My surgery was 8 days ago. Yet I still crave for normal food sometimes. Do you also crave food sometimes? I have lost about 10 pounds since the surgery. But my weight has stalled for two days. I was expecting my weight to drop at a faster rate. -

Pinkgirl1234 replied to Pinkgirl1234's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
No...not necessarily...First time bypassers and some revisions.... -
Lord you and me both, I just checked my tummy too....he made a incision right below where my port used to be, and I didnt feel anything praise God.... one the reasons why I wanted revision was because that port would hurt when I bend over and stay in that position for too long of a time.... I would schedule a appt to talk to your doctor directly to ask him why in the sam hill did he left that thing in you?!?!

Un-fill Lapband before Sleeve Surgery?
qdh replied to RAAinNH's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was unfilled 12/17/12. I'm scheduled for revision 4/25/13. -
Hey all. I figured this would be the best place to post this and I hope it is, but I have a situation that I'm not sure how to handle. I wouldn't necessarily like any relationship advice, but rather...advice on how I should respond to or support my boyfriend. I am hoping to get the Gastric Sleeve surgery. I have talked to the various people in my life that I would tell about the surgery and sought their support; these include my parents, a very select few close friends, and my boyfriend. They are all willing to be supportive and I am grateful, but I seem to be encountering an issue with my boyfriend that I'm not sure how to handle. A brief history: he and I were high school sweethearts, together about 3.5 years before we broke up in college, then we didn't talk for 5 years, we reconnected about 2 years ago and were off and on due to a lot of history to get over, but we've been ON for over a year now. In the time that we weren't together or speaking, he had gotten the LAPBAND procedure, so when we renewed our friendship and relationship, I was really impressed with the weight that he had been able to get off. Back in high school he had gotten up to over 300 pounds and since I've been with him he's been in and out of the ~280 range. So. He's had his lap band for at least a few years. And he hates it. HATES IT. He longs to be able to eat a hamburger with a bun, or any meat at all! He wants to get the band completely removed. Not unfilled, not replaced with a different WLS, just removed. And since I've talked to him about wanting to get WLS myself, it makes me worry even more about him. The thing is, he got the band because weight wasn't coming off no matter what he ate, didn't eat, drank, didn't drink, or how much he exercised. But from how he's explained it, his doctor TOLD him he HAD to get the surgery. It wasn't his original thought and choice. So I've told him that I'm worried about him getting his band removed and it has caused quite the fight between us! He is upset with me for not having faith in him to be able to lose weight and keep it off without the band. A couple of our friends get mad at me too and hit me with the, "you wouldn't still love him if he got fat?" accusation. It's really upsetting. Of course I would love him if he were fatter, I have before! But even back in high school I had talks with him about his weight because I wanted to have a future and a family with him and I wanted him to be around for that and his health was a concern for me! If he gets his band out, that concern becomes alarmingly large in my mind. I've heard what he wants to eat when he gets his band out. And he might say he wouldn't eat a burger every day, but even once a week is too much when he doesn't put in the exercise to burn all of those calories even from one bad day a week. If the pounds weren't coming off before, I don't know what makes him think this time will be any different. Again, he's upset I don't have faith in him. But the thing is, I WANT to have faith in him, but I seriously CAN'T when I have nothing to base this on that he has been able to do it on his own before. His eating habits have always been terrible -- his family rarely ever cooks, then or now, and usually eats out for almost every meal, so he developed those habits. Even now, he'll get that large order of chili cheese tater tots with extra chili and extra cheese from Sonic and eat the whole thing. But now it takes him longer and some bites he has to re-chew and re-swallow two or three times or he'll throw the bite up completely and try again with a new bite. He uses the excuse that "bad food just goes down easier" and he can't eat most meats or even salads (something I've read as being an issue for many band patients), but if he "had the band out, he could actually be able to eat healthier, as in Proteins and salads as a meal". I asked him how I could really have faith in him to do it on his own when I have NEVER seen him do so and he said, "Just because I never choose to show people that I can do it, doesn't mean I can't." At this point in one of our fights, I told him he sounded like a total food addict. "I CAN STOP ANYTIME I WANT TO." But I'm worried that he can't. He's still paying off the band and wants it out. I've tried to talk to him about a revision instead, but he doesn't want to hear it. Since HE didn't choose the surgery, it feels pretty clear he didn't change him mental game and is still a "fat guy" in the brain. He wants the food he can't eat. He still cheats his band and eats bad food. It isn't that I wouldn't love him if he gained weight again, but now that I'm trying to turn my weight and my life around, I still want him to be in it with me. But I don't want him to learn the hard lesson... I don't want to see him fail with weight loss and get miserable if he gets super overweight again and struggle to pay for a third surgery to get a WLS that he should have just done during the second surgery as a revision. So what do I do? What can I say to him when he doesn't want to hear my suggestions? How can I have faith with him when I have such a high percentage in mind that he will fail...even when I wish that he could do it solo? Sorry this turned out so long, so thank you to anyone who actually reads it and replies... But with a big problem comes a big post!

I had trouble with the yellow pills. Couldn't stomach the taste And Bariatric chewable Iron 60 mg (I was deficient and am now weaning down. Also the gummies don't have iron which I somehow missed) And my allergy meds Please remember I am banded awaiting revision. I expect these will change slightly since I tolerate most pills for now.
