no family support for having surgery..lots of guilt though
julier replied to misltoe's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You bet from my mom. I took her out to lunch and told her what i was doing and all was fine. She was excited for me. Then she had her physical therapist tell her that i was doing what i perseive she thought was a gastric bypass and all went down hill. We have not talked since as she just said to many wrong things and got really ugly. Ignorance is not bliss, i tell ya. And as for your husband! Mine supported me 100% and boy is he happy! I have lost 30#s and have 30# to go! I now am in a size 10 from a 14 and can wear sexy things that he dreamed about me wearing. My confidence is on the roof and my spirit is healing from my insecurities from the past. You are young it sounds like to make this decision. If you have tried faithfully other avenues and failed and you are a volume eater then this will probably be sucessful. But realize and be sure that if you are consuming your calories from liquids (includes chocolate, liquor) then to be careful in choosing the lapband. In closing! Do what is right for you. I am turning 50 next year and thankful that i found this before i loose all my elatisity. If i had known about this back 6 to 8 years ago i would have done it in a heart beat. :clap2: -
8 days post op & barely feeling the restriction I felt even two days ago. Normal?
AEdoesRnY replied to JessiG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for posting this, I read it several days ago and I’ve been reminding myself that others experienced the same thing when I’ve been worrying that even after I graduate to puréed and eventually solid foods I still won’t feel any restriction/fullness. I’m two weeks out now and I’m still on liquids only until 8/20, and between being able to drink 4-5 oz of Water no problem and hitting the infamous two week stall slightly early my anxiety about whether this will work for me has been escalating. Even though my anxiety often refuses to respond to reason, it’s helpful to be able to remind the rational side of my brain that this is normal. Was this true for those of you who did bypass as well as sleeve?? -
Be Honest- Is Banded Life Hard?
gpax replied to ireallywannabthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The procedure was sold to me as you are saying. I tried my best to follow my water intake, protein shakes and foods off their list. My problem was that I was constantly throwing up stingy meats like chicken, lettuce and almost anything you couldn't grind down to powder consistency with my teeth. I did not throw up soups like tomato or chicken soup or mashed food like mashed potatoes. When my weight loss stalled at about 20 pounds I was told soup was bad for me - too much sodium. We played with adjustments about once every 6 weeks. Not what I was expecting. I have three doctors in the family who suggested I involve my primary care physician after a year and a half to have my band opened up. My HMR diet place in town just closed its doors and I am going back to weight watchers. My gastric surgeon said I should have had a gastric bypass and not the lap band. I would not do it again if I knew my results would be this poor. -
Leaks and complications first hand i want to hear from you.
w8loser replied to lc6342's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
lc6342 and all of you who've experienced complications you have my sympathy. Pain in your left shoulder is a sign of a leak. I'm surprised your doctor didn't know that! I'm 3 weeks out from gastric bypass and I'm experiencing pain in my stomach, upper right side. Could be gall bladder. I can drink liquids but I can't keep any solids down. My ribs & diaphragm hurt so much from the regurgitation that occurs when I eat the simplest things. My doc is sending me to a gastroenterologist tomorrow. I hope that everyone gets relief & look back on this experience as a bump (massive potholes for some) in the road to healthy lives. Best wishes. JP -
Anyone else being sleeved in the next couple of months?
Rooben replied to willow13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just agreed my date today - 10 April so only a couple of weeks to go and so I must start the preop diet in a couple of days. My surgeon has offered me sleeve or bypass. Hadn't really considered bypass before and don't know whether I should now. I do have a sweet tooth and can binge on sweet things. I don't know if the surgeon suggested it for that reason. I do know he favours the bypass, though has done many sleeves to and says it is my choice and that he won't make it for me. I so identify with the previous post listing the things I'm scared off and now I have to choose bypass or sleeve too. Aarrghh! -
It's not that they don't eventually get it done, it's that they tell you they are goiing to do something and then they don't. I didn't mind waiting. I'm having to wait an additional three months or more to have my revision surgery because Dr. Koppman wants to wait six months after my band was removed so the scar tissue will have a chance to settle and so I can have additional tests done to make sure I am going to be a good candidate for the sleeve. (Makes sense to me). Anyway, read my post (or not) and see if you would have put up with repeatedly beiing told one thing and then nothing ever being done. I used to be a staunch advocate and defender of Dr. Cywes practice but when he suggested that I get a fill when three weeks prior he had removed my gastric tube from my surgery, I decided it was time to move on. You need to have confidence in your surgeon.

My doctor told me to plan on 2 nights because mine was revision surgery but I went home the next day because I felt fine

I am 70 and still have all my original teeth except for on molar and my wisdom teeth. I had gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago and it did not affect my teeth at all. Like others have said, it is extremely important to follow the surgeon's guidelines on daily vitamin intake after surgery. A lack of calcium can destroy your teeth and bones.

Hi! I am going to have gastric bypass surgery on April 2nd . I do not want to tell anyone either. I am scheduled to return to work 13 days after surgery. Can anyone shed some light on their experiences? I’m basically worried about being weak . Any input would be appreciated! TIA

Can I go from a gastric bypass to a Sleeve?
Creekimp13 replied to Lboogie82's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
"The patient is a 39 year-old woman who initially underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in 2001. A revision was then performed in 2003 for suboptimal weight loss, where the gastric pouch was revised and a Silastic band was placed to the distal gastric pouch. She then underwent revision to a distal gastric bypass. She developed symptoms of reflux and also had weight recidivism. Endoscopy demonstrated stenosis of the distal gastric pouch at the location of the Silastic band. She was taken to the operating room for conversion sleeve gastrectomy, removal of the Silastic band, and hiatal hernia repair. " None of this applies to the OP. Again...No. To remedy severe complications experienced with other weight loss surgeries...it's a rare possible option. For simple lack of weight loss, it is accurate to say that there is no surgeon alive who would convert RNY to sleeve. So again, No. Just No. -
Have they done another EGD on you? Maybe just maybe what you're feeling is gastritis, perhaps something to with your remaining stomach. Did you have a sleeve? sometimes they can do a sleeve reduction. They would go down with a smaller gauge tube and retighten things up. Somebody else had it done recently on BP. Did you have a bypass of some sort? If you did it might be another problem.Really sounds like your hunger hormone started back up. You might have an anomoly location in remaining stomach. It is puzzling. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

Surgery Date was 6/27-6 Days Out
taracutch replied to TexasTeach's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi there!! I also had gastric bypass on 6/27. I'm also struggling with gas and abdominal pain. My doc only wants me to focus on liquids. When I see him on Wednesday, he's going to remove the drain which I'm hoping will help with the pain. Then he wants me to focus on protein and vitamins. I'm glad he took the pressure off for the first week to just let me focus on hydration. I'm having a really hard time walking due to the pain. -
Beginning My Pre-Op Journey & The Nutritionist Suggests Herbal Life?
blackcadillacs5 replied to Onamissionn2013's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow. First of all...great job. You seem like you have done your research and are mentally prepared (which is the most important!) Forget what the dietitian/nutritionist said about herbal life. If you really want to follow this to the T then I suggest you seek another opinion. My dietitian gave me a meal plan for a person having a bypass, and said it was the same thing. Totally different, I threw the paper as soon as I got outta that place. Your mind and heart are on the right place, everything else will fall into place. Congrats on making the first steps to your new you and journey. If you have any questions feel free to message me. -
Surgery Date was 6/27-6 Days Out

Welcome. I had RNY gastric bypass over 3 years ago. The following article describes my experience. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf Walking is the best way to deal with gas. -
I am new as well. Everything has gone very fast because my insurance approved my procedure as soon as my primary dr recommended it. I went to surgeon on March 13th and my surgery is March 27th. I was set on the bypass until my surgeon said sleeve was the best option. I am soooooo excited.

Who has had their band the longest?
MuffinBirdie replied to bushbaby's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
July 4, 2001 - first band August 4, 2005 - revision with second band -
Congrats! I'm still looking at dr's for lap band. I have 2 appts/seminars in the next 10 days. If they recommend a bypass I'll direct them to your post! Large weightloss can be done with the band- you just have work at it. Something I've from this site is the band is a tool, it'll only work if you use it right.

I too am very excited, nervous and scared to death! My surgery is going to be April 1st or 2nd. I will find out Friday when I see my Dr. for the pre-op visit on Friday. I still have not decided if it will be the sleeve or bypass. We will decide that on Friday. I go for my Barum swallow test on Monday. It is all coming up so fast. I'm just trying to keep focused on how much better my health will be. Good luck to you!

Hello, I guess this is my introduction to the forum, please point me in the right way if I'm in the wrong place. I'm a 46 Y/O guy, about to go in for a revision to my RNY that was done a while back (exact date when I remember...) My new date is this coming Tuesday, May 30th, 2017. My first surgery was somewhat successful, but I guess I got tired of the restrictions and requirements after a while, and I started cheating more and more in my diet. I dropped down to around 300 lbs after starting at 618, my heaviest. A few years ago I had an accident, where I was left in a lot of pain, and since I didn't have insurance I left it go untreated, and that was the beginning of my weight gain, to where I'm now, 504 lbs as of last Monday. Well, here I am, not as excited as the first time, and not scared either, more of a feeling of "whatever". Now, don't get me wrong, I will make it work, it's not as fun being fat and 46, like it was being fat and 30. Anyway, I'm an open book, ask away if you have any Q's, and I'm looking fwd to learning from ya'lls successes and mistakes, especially now that I found a forum dedicated to guy's issues, because my first time around, it was mostly ladies, with very few guys, and most of those guys were young. Best Regards.

Lap-Band removal to Gastric Sleeve
Barbwired replied to Tim C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I also had the lap band 10 years ago and loved it. I lost over 100 pounds and life was good until the gastric reflux started. It got so bad I was aspirating stomach acid into my lungs and I had to sleep in a chair. They removed all of the fluid from the band and the reflux went away and then I started on the track to get a revision to a sleeve. It seemed to me that I shouldn't have had to gone through the whole program for approval again but I did. I'm now waiting to get my surgery date finally after 6 months, which was probably a little longer because of Covid. Unfortunately having the band deflated and my gym closing (I was working out like crazy and now I've just stopped) I've gained a ton back. I'm so frustrated. Hoping to get the sleeve in 4-6 weeks, fingers crossed. -
Where You Ever A Naysayer?
SleeveandRNYchica posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have to admit, I was. I was one of those people that thought about bypass, but never did it because it seem so extreme to me. That was in 2003. I loss weight and got to a comfortable 223 (still fat), but lived there and just excepted that was my life. I was active, I exercised and had great labs. So here I am back at 259-260 and going through the sleeve process. I admit I have had several friends that had RNY and I was always supportive, but always stated it was not for me. Now I am dealing with my own hypocritical feelings. I said I would NEVER do this.....NEVER is a mightly long time. I always believe in life everything ain't for everybody. So I am sure some people in my life will call me a hypocrite. I will deal with that when the time comes. Anyone else feel the same way prior to making this decision? -
Hello. I am a month out (yesterday) from gastric bypass. I have had a very difficult time getting fluids and food down since surgery. I have gone twice for fluids due to becoming dehydrated. My Dr. has me on nausea medication that helps some. I'm struggling the last few weeks with throwing up even if I'm not nauseated. I've thrown up Fairlife milk, chicken broth, Greek yogurt, applesauce, even Popsicles from time to time. Anytime I put food or liquids in my stomach, I feel heavy and bloated. Has anyone dealt with this? Did it get better quickly? I'm barely eating more than 3-5 Wheat Thins a day and drinking Gatorade. I'm miserable and am not sure what to do.

If you recommend being with someone let me know why?? Thanks

The gastric bypass procedure is a type of bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery designed to reduce your food intake if you have tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise. Gastric bypass can greatly improve the quality of life not only because of an improvement in appearance and an increase in mobility, but also because it can reduce the number and severity of health problems that overweight people are prone to suffer, such as diabetes and heart/circulation problems. Increasingly, the surgery is covered by gastric bypass insurance from both public and private insurers. It is a complex procedure performed under general anesthesia — you sleep through it. Time in surgery is approximately one to four hours, followed by a one- to seven-day stay in the hospital. Currently, two techniques are available for gastric bypass: 1.) Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass (traditional and laparoscopic) 2.) Biliopancreatic diversion bypass Gastric bypass recovery and aftercare After gastric bypass surgery, many patients spend two to three days in the hospital, or one to two days for the laparoscopic procedure. On average, most people require two to five weeks of recovery before returning to normal activities. For a number of days your abdomen will be swollen and sore, and you'll likely feel discomfort. Your doctor can prescribe medications to help you manage the discomfort. All the techniques leave a permanent scar, but normally scarring is covered by clothing. Aftercare treatments typically include a dietary plan, regular exercise, behavioral-modification therapy, and Vitamin supplements. Your weight loss surgeon or plastic surgeon might require the use of a dietician, an exercise program, and possibly a psychologist for an extended period of time to assist you in your recovery. Plastic surgery after massive weight loss may be necessary to remove excess skin and fat and create a more shapely body profile. Panniculectomy and body lift are common post-bariatric procedures. I hope it will be useful to you.
