    High A1c

My Hgb A1c was 7.5 a year ago & 7.3 in May, one month into the 3-month supervised high Protein, low carb diet. Three months later, the day after surgery, my Hgb A1c was 5.9! I'm going to get it checked next week with my annual birthday-month checkup. I'm hoping that it will be even lower. I stopped taking Metformin 10 days before surgery & haven't restarted it. And I am taking a lot less insulin now. Healing has never been an issue with me. Quite the opposite actually. I scar very easily. I just had to have a scar-release surgery on my right hand 11 days ago due to heavy scarring after a trigger finger release nearly three years ago. At least I've found a hand surgeon who believes me & lets me have the stitches out in a week rather than two weeks or more as is the norm with diabetics. Even a week was a bit much this time.

    Why I'm Here

Hi there... HumbleMom here. Am Pre-Op RNY - waiting for insurance approval. Most likely will have surgery next month (2/2014.) Was born and raised in Memphis, TN and am still here. Have been a wife for almost 21 years ~ looking forward the next 21+. Mother to 3 children, one of whom passed away at 8yrs ~ more about this in future blogs. Am happy in general ~ my life is full of love and laughter, family and friends and all those little positive intangibles we tend to take for granted. My faith is intact, meaning my relationship with God has weathered the death of my son. God and I are good ~ I have MANY questions for Him, but I also have to thank Him for all He's done for me and for all He continues to do for me. For financial reasons, I dabble in cybersecurity. For fun, I read, cook (sometimes healthy, sometimes not), needlepoint and am learning to play Bridge. We have three dogs, all different sizes, all rescues, all quirky and all amazingly lovable. You can see from my profile that I'm a big girl. Like just about everyone else here, I didn't get this way overnight. My weight crept up on me over time, over pregnancies, over typical stress, over unbelievable stress and over many a wonderful meal shared with good friends. Also like just about everyone else, I'm a very well educated obese person. I KNOW Weight Watchers inside and out and have been very successful with it over the years, having lost (and regained) myself several times over. Jenny Craig and I have been good friends, albeit never for long. I've tried Nutrisystem and Medifast ~ ordered the products, received them, organized the cupboards to house them, tried them for a few days and then promptly sold the remaining items on eBay. I've walked, done couch-to-5k, done pilates, attended exactly ONE Bikram yoga class (WHAT was I thinking??? If you are a Bikram fan, my hat's off to you!), used a personal trainer, worked out in a members only gym, worked out at my office gym, walked some more and then walked even more. And like just about everyone else, each new this-will-change-my-life endeavor has proven successful (except the Bikram yoga!). I've lost weight, I've toned muscles I never knew I had and I've increased my endurance more than I ever thought possible. UNTIL… I wasn't losing or toning anymore because I'd stopped. I'd stopped because I ~ well, that's part of this puzzle. Why DID I stop? I don't know. I seriously need to find a counselor who can help me with this strange dance of mine with food, exercise and health. Know of anyone in the Memphis area? Please share! So, long story short, I'm hoping this surgery will be the missing tool from my arsenal of knowledge needed to become a healthier me. While it will be nice to look more attractive, I'm here for other reasons. I want to be able to hike and climb volcanoes with my sons. (True story ~ more later!) I want to quit the daily meds for cholesterol, blood pressure, GERD and depression. Or maybe I should say I want to trade those meds for vitamins, calcium and b12 supplements! I don't want my family to bury me because I literally ate myself to death. Much better to perish on the side of a volcano, right? I'm tired of walking into a large department store filled with beautiful clothes and being relegated to shop from the Women's sizes hidden away in the tiny corner of the basement. I mean, come on. NOTHING tastes that good! I have 'eaten' my way into that corner and I'm tired of it. Those clothes in the other 90% of the store are much, much cuter! I want to shop from THOSE racks. Actually, just knowing I have the choice to shop from those racks is enough for me. I'll probably end up at the consignment store anyway. Well, that's me in a nutshell. Obviously a fan of lists! I need to get to know others here. I need support and I want to support you! I need to know I'm not the only one who can't stand a certain type of chewable bariatric vitamin! Won't you please be my neighbor?

    Venting

OM goodness...mourning phase!! YES!! That's exactly what it's like...my surgery was 12-30-13, and for two or three weeks after, all I could think about was all my favorite foods and question myself over why I did this! It's passed, thank goodness, and now I feel I am in control of my eating habits for the first time in my life!! Hang in there, this too shall pass!!

I’m 68 y.o. and just starting this journey. Did you have to go on a supervised diet for three months before your surgery per Medicare rules?

    OMG

I work for myself and run a small agency so I didn't have the luxury of taking time off like I wanted to. Three days post-op the phone was ringing. Really I can do one-two meetings a day but more than that tires me. I'm supposed to go back full-time next week and although it's a desk job, it's also a lot of thinking, talking to clients, writing presentations, deciding how they should spend their money, and I am hoping like mad I will have a clear head by Monday which will be 10 days. I wish I could take 2 weeks off.
  9. I am 6 months out and bedore surgery I was a Diet Pepsi addict. i realized three months before my surgery that diet soda was really bad for you, so I stopped dinking it cold turkey. My doctor said it would not stretch the sleeve, but would cause severe gas and bloating. You do not want that after you take this step in your life. I don't even want it anymore. I am so happy with my sleeve and my weightloss, that I don't even want to take a chance of drinking it. You will probably find you don't want it anymore. I tried a sip of some carbonated sparking ice flavored water rhe other day, and one sip was enough. I could not bear the strong taste of the carbonation. You will find that your taste buds change dramatically and you may not even care for something you once loved. my advice to pre-ops is to not think about or worry about what you are going to be able to eat or drink. You won't know until the time comes and you try it, so why worry about it now. You will find yourself concentrating on your new eating habits and your new clothes!

    I need support!

Kat...Take a deep cleansing breath! You are doing an awesome job just by realizing that you need the help! I was banded Feb 10 ,2006 on March 19, 2006 my husband was diagnosed with Cancer....my stress level hit mach 9!! The things that kept me going were these.... I kept reminding myself that life is real, things happen and sometimes those things are messy and ugly. All we can do is move forward and eating everything that isn't bolted down is not going to make it all better. If I felt like losing my mind (aka...eating everything in sight) I would do one of the following... walk around the block real quick drink a bunch of Water allow myself a small snack that was ok (100 calorie pack etc) if I was hungry turn up some music that made me want to dance turn on some music that made me mellow Put a pillow over my face and scream as loud as I could Find those things that you can do that don't involve icky foods. Also stick to your guns! I learned from personal experience that one "this cookie won't matter" leads to two...then three...see a pattern here? Your doing great keep up the great work and don't let the jerks get you down!!

    Social Life down the drain???

My experience has been that eating out causes more problems than eating at home. Once you achieve good restriction, there will be days when almost nothing goes down and you end up in the ladies' room three times during one meal. That may be difficult to explain.
  12. I'm eatin today LOL. Jeff fixed chicken fried steak, cream gravy, hashbrowned potatoes, and three eggs. Lunch, leftover hashbrowned potatoes. Snack, baked ziti. I'm nervous about tomorrow. I saw something on a website that says the average person only loses 47% of their weight with the surgery but that would be 150 pounds roughly and that seems like a darn good start. Hopefully things will go good tomorrow. My appointment is at 3:45. :clap2: I remember Optifast. I remember hairloss. I just want health now. I was diagnosed Friday with Type II Diabetes and I don't see Dr. Joslin for that until Wednesday. Today is Sunday, Mother's Day. I haven't called Mom yet but between what I can't tell her, Diabetes and Surgery, not much to say right now except thanks for being my mom. That's enough I think

    April 2006 Bandits September Chat

Nah, amourette, you're not the only one. I've just had a three day weekend so work has been strange today. Everybody tried to follow Monday's schedule instead of Tuesday's. I've met myself coming and going. Now I'm trying to get caught up on messages before I start in on my new grad school class. This is my fifth class and puts me halfway through with my Masters. WOW! I can't believe that. Pic

    I Am Banded!!!

Thanks loriely. I am three days post op now. Feeling better except the gas pains on occassion that flare up. The insicions do not hurt too bad. All in all, a good experience. I am getting headaches though...anyone else?
  15. I'm ready to throw myself off a bridge...I really am. I had a band put in six months ago and have actually gained five pounds. I've had FIVE fills and the food still just whisks through...they won't fill it any further and have checked for leaks. I have NEVER felt more than just a tad constricted. I can guzzle 20 ounces of water at a time in huge gulps, take a big bite of something and swallow it hole, swallow huge pills...I just don't get it. I do feel full faster, but am perfectly capable of eating 2 cups of food before I feel full. I have always eaten a pretty healthy diet, low carbs, little fat, but just eat too damn much, and nothing has changed with the band. The Dr. keeps insisting I must be eating gallons of ice cream or other easy to swallow, high calorie soft foods. I wish the bastard could come to my house and see what I eat. The problem is the same as always...I'm hungrier for way more food than my body burns off. With three meals a day I still need two snacks. Has anyone else had as dissapointing of an experience as I have? What the hell is wrong with me?:help: :cry

6 Months Out NO WEIGHT LOST

Definitely feel your frustruation - have it too still trying to find the right restriction after over one year. Are you getting your fills under flouro? I had all but one under flouro and found the fill amount was quite a bit different then was suppossed to be put in. I won't have another without it - I'm suppossed to eat three meals and two Snacks a day now to see if that will help me lose weight - sorry to hear that doesn't work for you. I do watch my portion sizes very closely and always stop before 'full' - i'm not a bandster that is 'stuffed' with two bites - you may have had several fills but you aren't probably restricted - i suggest getting a fill under flouro, if after one month you don't feel restriction - go back. I've also heard several folks say that didn't lose weight until after 6 months

    Ive Stopped Smoking !

On Monday it will be three weeks for me too. I can't believe how I used to smell, now that I can smell other people. My house stinks but I can't do anything about it unless my husband gets the urge to quit. We are just getting more and more healthier aren't we. Josephine

    Herbalife

I have been using Herbalife for the last 3 mobths. It did jumpstart my weightloss. I am amazed. I have been at 34lbs loss in 1 1/2 yrs. the last three months i lost 16lbs. And its healthy. Dr approved. My goal for additional 50lbs loss is by march 2014.
  20. mashed potatoes first, then scrambled egg, soup, pudding, applesauce today. I am at three weeks on Wednesday when I can "officially start mushies. I plan on branching out to some well cooked veggies..probably stewed squash first...yummy. I have been satisfied with my weight loss so far so I hesitate to move on but I know I should. My dietician says it is always better to eat your protein than drink it. I am not supposed to move ahead with chicken and other dense proteins until the 1st of September. I am looking forward to it.

    PB's = Weight Gain?

It's really hard to eat enough in one day to cause significant weight gain. If you ate 5 pounds of chocolate candy in one day (and nothing else), you would gain 3 pounds or so. The "Super Size Me" guy who ate nothing but McDonald's three times a day for 30 days only gained 30 pounds. That's one pound per day, even though he was consuming a ton of calories (no pun intended) and getting very little exercise. We did not get to be MO because we had an ice cream cone twice a month. We were over-eaters and made very bad food choices on a daily basis, for a very long time. Between the spring of 2003 and the end of 2004 (about 20 months), I gained 80 pounds. That's about a pound a week - maybe one Snicker's bar per day. Who would have thought????

    Mad at my doctor

All situations are different. I'm three months out of surgery and haven't had fill at my doctor's request because of the rate at which I'm losing. I also don't go back to see him for 9 months and will be at my target weight much sooner. I can get a fill if I want one but he doesn't think I'll ever need more than .5cc in my band. Patience is important for both parties in these situations. Trust your doctor within reason and you'll be fine.
  23. My PCP says that I have a food addiction...perhaps you have the same? He prescribed bupropion for me and I have noticed a big difference. I started on two tablets and then went up to three. He told me that I could go back down if I wanted to, but I could go back up if needed. I did go back to two and I did notice a difference - obsessing about food!!! I popped back up to three and - POW! - away went those obsessive thoughts. Pharmaceuticals can be a wonderful thing!!
  24. Okay, I am hoping that there is someone out there that can give me advice, words of wisdom, or just plain old Ive been there and it is possible to get back on track. I got my band three years ago. Lost 100 pounds. Had complications, band slipped and severe acid reflux. Surgery to put band back, then way off the good trail on eating, followed by divorce. Now 80 pounds are back and I want to get back on track. I just cannot seem to stop eating and kick the habit. Any advise? I know it is up to me. I just don't know how to get started again.
  25. I am 5 weeks post-op today. I have healed well, tolerate a regular diet, and exercise (C25k three times a week and elliptical at the gym twice a week) regularly. I have been maintaining this routine since about week two. I lost 15 lbs during the first week post-op but have fluctuated at 298-300 for the past month. I saw my NUT last week who recommended increasing calories from 850/day to about 1000/day. I have been meeting my caloric, Protein, and Water goals but still have not lost weight. I haven't done measurements, but my clothes aren't fitting differently either. I know every other person has complained about slow weightloss, and it's a waiting game or loss comes down to switching up your routine, but I don't know what to do anymore! I feel like I have all of the inconveniences and discomforts of the surgery without the pay-off--I'm pretty bummed about it. Am I missing something obvious?
