Wow, I have to say…it sounds like the holidays didn’t get too bad for most of you, and that’s great! And even better is that you have some sensible – not extreme – plan for getting back on track! Cervidae, Congratulations on having a treat, enjoying it, and stopping there! What an accomplishment, and something to be proud of and to remember when the going gets rough. Jennolsen, Protein and fluids – that’s the right idea! Congratulations on still losing during the holidays, and being so close to goal weight! It sounds like going back to counting, focusing on protein and Water, and getting rid of the junk are at the top of the list. For me, the first thing was to clean out my house to get rid of whatever holiday treats somehow snuck in and accumulated! Then I went grocery shopping for all kinds of good things, including fresh fruits and vegetables like lettuce, Snacks like carrots and grapes, and veggies to cook like broccoli and zucchini. I also stocked up on all the other healthy essentials, like yogurt, plus frozen staples like blueberries, and chicken. Now there’s no reason not to eat right!

Mornings I sometimes just have coffee with vanilla protein powder, or 1-2 eggs, or Greek yogurt with protein powder. For lunch I try to take left overs from last nights dinner which is mostly chicken or fish and veggies. I may have thinly sliced turkey and cheese, rolled together. Snacks may be yogurt, cheese, sugar free Popsicles. I admit I am pretty boring and not creative.

I'm one week into my 2 week preop diet. It consists of 2 shakes a day either protein or no sugar carnation instant breakfast, nonfat yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, steamed or raw veggies and fruit. ( they gave a couple of different meal plans switching up the servings on these so the amount varies). I can also have up to 64 oz of low calorie sugar free fluids like crystal light, unsweetened iced tea, water, sf jello, sf popsicle, or broth.

I agree with Threetimesacharm. The body changes after about a year. The intestines change and allow you to consume fats and sugars again (without dumping). They take up the slack caused by the part of your stomach that formally performed that function and was cut away after RNY surgery. So periodically experiment and see if you can now tolerate these (like milk, yogurt and cheese) without experiencing dumping syndrome. I found that softer foods such as chili and Soups went down better than harder foods such as steaks. I made my own high Protein version of these. My surgeon is noted for making the pouches small which has similarities to your condition. I included some recipes in the following. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf When I spoke to my nurse about the difficulty in eating, she said not to be constrained to 3 meals per day but that I could increase this number, because my pouch is smaller.

Milk makes me dump badly. Can't even do yogurt. I can do cheese and I do. I know!! I have to eat all day. It's so hard. It's dicusting. I find it soooo hard. I'm hoping that this will get better in time. I was doing better when I was eating a lot of Taco Bell but I got so tired of it and I worried that eventually the tide would turn and I would start to gain from it. And it's so bad for you. I eat oatmeal, eggs, waffles, bagels, bacon, ranch dressing, cheeses, pizza, sandwiches, Thai and Chinese, Pasta, steak, hummus, pita, fruit, Beans, sometimes Protein bars, Jerky, avocados....and much more It's not what- it's that the quantity is so low. I've become a one meal wonder. I know it's really my fault but I just had to post about it because although it seems like an easy fix, it's not going easily!!! I only made 800 calories today and I feel repulsed at the idea of eating more because I am so full already. I had steak for dinner and that tipped me over the edge Ugh

My diet was high protein, low carbs, consisting of Premier Protein shakes (4-5 per day), sugar free pudding with a scoop of protein powder added, sugar free popsicles, chicken and beef broth, and Kroger Carbmaster yogurt. I was on my pre-surgery diet for 3 weeks, because I was awaiting approval by my insurance, was hoping for an end of December surgery date, and if approved quickly, my surgeons office wasn't sure if I would have surgery the week of Christmas or the week after. As it turned out, I was approved, and was scheduled for December 28.

I'm 5 months out today, and not at goal. Breakfast: one fruit-flavored greek yogurt, or one scrambled egg with cheese. Lunch: 1/3 cup of meat leftover from dinner, or about six small meatballs. Dinner: 1/3 cup of meat (fish, chicken, steak, ribs, pork loin, etc.) with about two bites of vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower) One sugar-free tropical popsicle after dinner. About 60 ounces or more of crystal light each day. My plan does not allow Snacks. I tried adding some salad to lunch or dinner, but I just can't eat it after eating my Protein. -
Any one else become lactose intolerant after surgery?

I am 11 days out from surgery and today had very bad reactions after eating yogurt and after having a pudding made with skim milk. I'm totally bummed since I don't want to be lactose intolerant. What are the chances of this passing? -
I'm using Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey. So far the double chocolate has served me well. One thing I've found is adding a little softened PB mixes and creates a Reeses PB cup-like taste. Another thing you can try is adding Protein powder to various foods. I sprinkle some powder on my vanilla Greek yogurt and it mixes to make a pudding consistency. Tastes pretty darn good too.

Also, someone posted here about GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder with 30 grams of protein. I had a hard time finding thing I could tolerate at first. By adding the GenePro to the yogurt or cottage cheese I got to my protein goals.

Thank you guys ... I think I'll start with yogurt and see how it goes!!!????????

Just start slow and see what works for you. I started with cottage cheese and greek yogurt. They are both good blasts of Protein. Then I added in some scrambled eggs. Then I made egg salad too and that was tasty.

I agree - if I do just liquids for 2 days- I am full pretty quick after eating even yogurt- but it does kick start it again.

I'm almost 7 months out and below goal. My daily menu looks like this: Breakfast: 1/2 packet of lower-sugar oatmeal made with Fairlife skim milk 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein powder stirred into the oatmeal 1 Morningstar Farms veggie sausage link or, if we go out to breakfast, I'll get a Denver omelet and eat about 1/3-1/2 and give the toast and most of the home-fries to my husband or, if I know I'm going to be going out or eating a more carb-heavy meal that day, I'll have a Protein shake My commute to work is about 25 minutes, so once I get there I have: 2 cups of coffee with Torani sugar-free syrups and some Fairlife 2% milk Lunch: 1 ounce turkey pepperoni or chicken breast or tofu 1 light string cheese or Babybel My NUT wants me to start making my lunch a little more substantial, so I'm working on throwing in some veggies & hummus, a few baby dill pickles, making little salads, etc. Mid-afternoon snack: 1 ounce cashews, pistachios, and almonds with 1-2 prunes OR 1 ounce roasted chickpeas with 1-2 prunes OR 1/2-3/4 of an apple with 2 TB natural almond or Peanut Butter DInner: Varies--in general, something that includes 2-3 ounces of protein (meat, soy, Beans, dairy, etc), 1/4 cup non-starchy veggies, and sometimes 2 TB of a starch (potatoes, sweet potatoes, quinoa, low-carb tortilla, etc.) Evening snack: 3/4-1 cup of Greek yogurt with added Protein Powder topped with 1/2-1 ounce of salted caramel and/or dark chocolate almonds OR topped with 1/8-1/4 cup low-sugar, high protein granola OR 1/2-1 protein bar (usually Quest) OR, if I need more fluids or have eaten a lot of carbs that day, a protein shake -

Lately I've been relying on Protein bars a bit too much, but here's a rough outline of what I eat at 16 months post-op: Breakfast: Protein Bar and a cup of coffee Lunch: Leftover meat from a previous dinner OR 2 oz. of cheese and 1 oz. of peanuts Afternoon Snack: Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt with 15 grams of granola or Kashi Cereal mixed in Dinner: Meat from whatever my husband makes. He just makes normal dinners and I skip the sides or starches. chicken, meatloaf, shrimp, sausage... whatever. Last night was teriyaki salmon loaf. Evening Snack: Protein Bar and a cup of coffee I also usually incorporate some sort of carb-only snack into my day now that I'm in maintenance in between my high protein meals/snacks. It's usually chips, crackers, candy, or ice cream. Sometimes in the morning between Breakfast and lunch or sometimes in the late afternoon, after I get home from work, but before dinner. -

I eat anything I want to. The difference is that what I want has changed. I don't want Twinkies and Pepsi anymore. I want fresh food prepared from scratch. I eat roasted and salad veggies instead of potato chips. I don't eat near as much red meat and cheese that I used to, but I have learned to explore seafood instead of going into a seafood panic shutdown. We keep roasted turkey in the fridge instead of just on Thanksgiving. I eat vanilla Greek Yogurt instead of full fat Breyers Ice Cream. Fruit is a fresh peach, not peach pie. Actually, I have become a "Nutritarian" meaning that nothing goes into my body that does not provided nutrition to fuel my body. Instead of my body being a means to eat oversized servings of everything my taste buds desire, it has become a mechanical container for my spiritual essence of being (my personality, my spirit, that part of me that entered at conception and will exit upon death). It is my full time job now to maintain that container in good condition for as long as possible. My body reacts instantly in a bad way to things I used to eat. I have learned the difference between real food (things you grow, chase, and pick) and edible products made in factories. So, my primary guidance now is to just not eat anything made in a factory. -
When it comes to Snacks, and meals for that matter, I like things that are pre-portioned. My new favorite go to post-swim snack is a single serve bag of Mr. cheese O's. They are crunchy and cheesy. I also less frequently have a bag of Nancy's Naturals Protein cookie bites or Quest chips. Cheese sticks, yogurt, turkey roll ups, cottage cheese, and even nuts in single-serve packets make it easier to control portion size for me. I always take snacks to the pool. In the summer when I am outside for several hours, I take a small cold cooler.

Okay, this is tough because when I get started on cold Cereal - it is like an addiction! My boys love the crap, so we put it on the shelf I must never open. Actually, i discovered that cereal and milk was probably my main trigger food before but I didn't even realize it. My afternoon snack is almost always one of the following: -Protein drink -sandwich meat wrapped around a dill pickle... even better with a bit of cream cheese and honey mustard (sweet and tart and creamy all together) -Greek yogurt with berries and stevia -Leftover roasted veggies since I make them for dinner a few times a week. Yes, I eat cold roasted asparagus, brussel sprouts, carrots etc... -Protein Bars, but they are so high carb!

Any one else become lactose intolerant after surgery?

I have never had a problem with milk before. Wasn't something I drank straight but never had any issues. I am two weeks out and am on full liquids. Tried making my Protein shakes with both FF milk and almond milk. Both don't seem to agree with me. I also cant seem to tolerate pudding or yogurt. I am hoping this is just temporary. Any one else have this issue? -
22 days out 25 pounds down. This is my first post I have just been trying to focus. I am so weak no matter how much protein and water I get. I felt better earlier in my recovery than I do now. Anything I can be doing to make myself feel better. I start solid food on 1-16 which I can't imagine since it is hard enough getting yogurt and other pureed foods down.

You probably need to take a probiotic at least daily. This won't cure the existing yeast infection but it will help you from getting more. Cheapest way is to eat a yogurt each day with "active cultures." But I'm lactose intolerant so that doesn't work for me. You can buy probiotic pills at any health food or grocery store. My and my dr's favorite is Primal Defense Ultra, usually found int the refrigerated supplements section. It's pricey but is one of the few that contains both a wide range of probiotic species AND the one that has been found to reduce c. Difficile infections.

I was sleeved Nov 17th, only a short time before you. Wow I wish I was loosing weight as fast as you are! You are doing a great job! As for Protein, one of my favorite things to eat is dannon oikos triple zero yogurt. One serving will have 15 grams of protein and it comes in so many yummy flavors. I have also found that it is sold at most of the local grocery stores too. -Amy -

I was sleeved on Nov 24th and feel that my weight loss is slow (probably no matter what we lose we think something is not quite right LOL) I've lost 16 pounds in the 6 weeks since surgery. That is exactly what I was losing on my preop diet plan except I'm eating half the calories. I purchased nectar unflavored Protein which has 10 g of protein for 40 calories. If I think I might be low on protein for a day I try to mix this in to whatever I am eating (ie low fat greek yogurt; broth; turkey chili etc.) It doesn't really have that much of taste. Sometime (but not often because my dr doesn't want me to do a lot of shakes) I will only do 1/2 of the serving of the shake and add the Nectar. That way I get a lot of protein without all the SWEET taste. I'm only supposed to be eating 600 calories a day so almost everything I eat is protein. Shrimp is yummy and has a lot of protein without a lot of calories. Good Luck IM!
