New to WLS but not dieting.
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Getfitasamother's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
For the most part. I had road bumps along the way. I had multiple surgeries following my initial WLS for VSG with hiatal hernia repair (knee hardware removal, WLS revision due gerd by hiatal hernia, mesentery hernia repair, and small bowel resection due to obstruction from the seromas from the hernia repair 🤦♀️). I’m just prone to hernias for whatever reason and even knowing what I know now I’d do it all again because I feel so much better now than I did before. -
I had VSG revision to bypass due to gerd over a year ago, but my experience with the VSG and restriction for 6 to 7 years was the following: I didn't have alot of restriction either but had enough to be successful. With meat, about 3 ounces. Everything else about 1 cup. The great thing is... Even years out, I was never able to truly "pig out" again. If and when I ate too much, my heart would pound like crazy. I did have to work to stay away from slider foods since the end result of that is very little restriction. As long as you don't get gerd, and you eat protein first, it is a wonderful tool for weightloss and lifetime restriction but it takes work and commitment.

what surprised you?
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I guess since I'm a revision, Band to Bypass the only thing that surprised me is how natural Bypass feels. After having a torture device (Lap Band) for about 7 years, this feels so completely natural. I've had no food intolerances. Fried foods smell gross, that's the only thing that I've noticed. Like when you park at Publix, and you're walking inside and the deli is frying chicken and that smell is permeating the parking lot... 🤢 As for medication, I take my normal meds and vitamin in the morning with my proffee and then I have an alarm set on my phone for my calcium. Noon and 4 pm. I carry some calcium in my purse in case I'm not home. It's just part of wls that I committed to, so it's no big deal to me. And that's the extent of my meds for the day. Very doable, imo. -
Low folate, iron deficient anemia…
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to thinkt2013's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got my Lap Band almost ten years ago, and I can't remember if they did pre op blood work and if they did what the results were. I'm almost three months post op revision Bypass now and this surgeon did do pre op blood work, but it was all normal. I've been on continual vitamins/calcium for nearly ten years, so that's probably part of the reason my labs were normal. It's not uncommon for obese people to be malnourished/have low vitamins & mineral levels. If you think about it, for most obese people, the choices that they make/made is part of the reason that gets a lot of us to wls. Fast food, pizza, burgers for the most part has very little nourishment as far as vitamins/minerals go (besides carbs, lol). I'm sure your team will get your levels up to normal before you have your surgery. As a matter of fact, after my pre op labs came back, even tho they were normal, I was started on chewable bariatric vitamins. It was standard protocol for pre op patients. So don't fret, you'll be fine! Best wishes! -
Planning surgery mid May
ShoppGirl replied to GopherCup's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hello and welcome. I have heard of many people on here who have gone to Mexico and been very happy with their results. Like kcuster83 mentioned some people do run into issues with getting follow up care though so I would ask my family Dr about their take on that to make sure they are on board to do your labs and stuff each year at the very least. Also know if you need a revision or something you may have to go back to Mexico which I assume means you would have to self pay again. You may also consider Las Vegas or one of the others places in the states where it is Not quite as cheap as Mexico but you won’t have the same concerns with follow up. From what I understand if it is an emergency they have to help you here regardless of where you had surgery but I would probably want to hear that from a doctor or maybe the ER just to be sure. This surgery is by no means cheating. You still have to put in every bit of the work and make the same changes as anyone who is dieting and exercising to lose weight. People act like we get to sit there eating pizza and donuts while the fat just melts off or something. We still have to be disciplined and make all the good choices most of us just get to do it without our body screaming out at us that we are starving for once in our lives. It’s a tool that makes it a little easier and in every other aspect of our lives we pride ourselves In choosing the best tools to get the job done so why not use it. If someone uses the dishwasher or a drill instead of doing it by hand we don’t say they are cheating? and if someone creates a spreadsheet to complete a task in half the work we literally praise them for their idea. Or what if someone uses patch or a pill to make quitting smoking a little easier? I don’t know about you but I would encourage it, not treat them like a failure because they aren’t suffering as much as going cold Turkey. I think as a society to many of us believe that obesity is a moral failure and struggling with it is our punishment to which we are sentenced to life without parole or death by preventable medical issues. Don’t get me wrong though. I felt the same way as you pre surgery. I just realized that it couldn’t be further from the truth throughout this process. -
Sleeve or Bypass Regrets?
SuziDavis replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I went back and forth a bit on if I should have went for bypass rather than sleeve. But I don't regret my decision. I know that I will not lose as fast, but I am ok with that, and I like knowing that revisions are possible. -
I don’t have any experience with band to speak of but have heard of many people who decide to get them removed and do a revision. Not nearly as many doctors are even doing bands anymore because of the issues people are having with them. If you continue to have issues it’s definitely something to consider.

Someone please read this
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Shey Ronix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This is the exact thing that caused the band to damage my esophagus. I now have permanent esophageal damage because the lap band was so unnatural and damaging. For the life of me, I do not understand why surgeons are still placing lap bands. They pose more harm than good imo. If you're having difficulties with your band, consider a revision! There's better options available now. My bypass feels sooo natural compared to the lap band. I hope this resolves for you soon. Best wishes. -
6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to crazycatladycanada's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Don’t get discouraged. When I had my revision for GERD I left the hospital weighing more than when I went if for surgery by 5lbs! It eventually came off even when I stalled a lot and for a long time after, too. Trust the process and keep seeing your dietitian. -
Always cold!!!!
Tomo replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have experienced a strange phenomenon when it comes to being cold. When I went from 300s to 160 (and stayed there for many years), I was constantly cold. Like to the bone cold. Painfully cold. Last year, I had a revision to RNY for my gerd and have been 110 lbs. +/- 3 lbs. range for the past few months, and I no longer feel "cold" 24/7. I even kick off my blankets at night, something I haven't done for years. I had thought I would be even more cold. Confusing. lol It's more normal now but still leaning a little to being cold but not painfully so. I think it's totally weird BUT maybe others have experienced it. I haven't researched it at all. -

Revision from sleeve to bypass- questions.
lucielu posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was approved today for my revision. I had a sleeve done in 2017. HW 255, LW 160, CW 210 😒. Anyway, I’ve had this horrible GERD and put off my revision all through COVID, I have Barrett’s esophagus, I’ll vomit from the reflux, bad teeth, and sores in my throat. So I’m getting this done, pretty nervous!! So my questions are- (wish I asked my dr, I was so nervous at my appointment my mind was blank) what is the diet like compared to the sleeve? Same? What does the restriction feel like compared to having a sleeve? I still have some restriction but can eat way more than I could the first year out from my sleeve. I’m hoping for weight loss along with getting this GERD resolved. So this is a fresh start I’m grateful for! -
My tips and why I Don't recommend Sleeve surgery for long term
sindihankins replied to strawberryga's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had gastric bypass surgery 10 years a ago. I had the revision in June and have only lost 10 pounds. I feel like it was a waste of time. There isn’t a restriction on how much I can eat. It is very discouraging. -
Gastric bypass revision
Tina Leo replied to Fran631's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yep. 100%. Had my revision March of 2021. My surgeon warned me that chronic diarrhea could be a thing - and it pretty much is. Some days are worse than others, and yes - sometimes even "emergency" diarrhea - but after all this time I have that narrowed down to when I have too many carbs / gluten. You can take immodium and when it is particularly bad, I do. Good luck. Invest in nice toilet paper. :) -
I had gastric bypass revision August 8 2022 I am still getting diarrhea in the morning and I had something that was greasy and it was uncontrollable diarrhea is anyone having that problem

Weight loss meds after surgery!
Tomo replied to carpeediem's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I did. Before my revision to RNY for gerd, I was suffering from severe gerd and as it progressed it gave me a constant hunger-like pain. I ate more and more small meals but the food in my stomach only helped the burning symptoms temporarily. I gained 1/4 of my total weight loss back after developing gerd, so my surgeon put me on Lomaira while I was waiting for my revision. The Lomaira helped a lot for appetite control. I only took it as needed, not daily, often in the afternoon or evening. Of course, it doesn't help with the gerd but it did take away that particular symptom. -
3 years out from Sleeve. I feel like a failure.
Cpach81 replied to sassyangies's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just had my revision 4 weeks ago! My liquid diet was protien shakes, broths, low sugar yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, sugar free jello, and sugar free popsicles. Oh, and any sugar free drinks (non-carbonated) and tea. I had a sleeve 7 years ago and gained all my weight back as well. I decided to do gastric bypass because I knew I needed more permanent help if I wanted to truly get healthy. I was arrogant and not in the right frame of mind when I got my sleeve so I sabotaged myself. This time, I was 100% ready and its been soooo much better and the will power to want to do better seems almost natural now. Having said that, when I did my liquid diet before surgery, I dropped weight so fast! 12 lbs in 1 week and was down 21 lbs by the time my surgery rolled around (3.5 weeks). So, doing the liquid diet again definitely re-starts your sleeve but it will be up to you to keep up the diet after, which for me is the hard part. Good luck, whatever you decide to do! -
Feeling defeated 10 months post op
Sunnyway replied to ASteff's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Consider the possibility that you are a sugar/food addict and need to cut out things like sugar, flour, white potatoes, rice, and processed foods. I've been pretty successful at losing (despite frequent stalls) by following this. Due to complications my RNY>RNY revision was not successful so I have no volume restriction. I HAVE to record everything I eat. My clinic wants me to restrict myself to 800 kcal a day, but I struggle with cravings even though my body is getting sufficient sustenance. Cutting out the trigger foods (above), helps with the craving but I'm usually consuming around 1000-1200 kcal a day--and still slowly losing. Here are some books I recommend. -
Hello, this is my 1st on here; however, my surgery date is Monday Oct 31 2022 I’m having a Revision surgery
-
You sure have been through the wringer. While there are some who have had severe complications from their WLS, their cascade of events will likely be different from yours, so won't be directly comparable. The best that I can suggest for second opinions would be a major regional cancer center that has a GI department, as they will usually have a more experience with a broader spectrum of unusual cases than an ordinary bariatric or GI department. Duke has a good bariatric program with a reputation for doing complex revisions, so they may be a place to try as well if they are in your area. Good luck in getting this resolved and getting back to the health that you were aiming for.

At a stall after 7 weeks post op
ShoppGirl replied to Desi^'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
27 pounds at 7 weeks seems good to me. Congratulations. I just had the sleeve but from what I understand the process is very similar for a revision and Stalls are pretty common. The first one USUALLY being right around the third week. Sounds like your is just arriving a little late. They can last a short while and the best thing to do is to stay the course but stay away from the scale. It will start moving again soon. Hang in there. -
Hello, My name is Desire’e and I am new to the group. Just needing a little advice and hopefully a sense of encouragement. I am 7 weeks out from my revision surgery from gastric sleeve to gastric bypass. I have only lost 27 lbs so far, and I have followed the rules to the T!! Anyone else gone through this after a revision?

ShoppGirl replied to sassyangies's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Lots of people on here think about getting a revision for way too long. If you are suffering from gerd I would be more worried about that than the weight first. I would Get the revision process started asap and you can even ask the surgeon for the best reset diet while you are there.
