Intro time: who's new to the group, who's pre-op, & who just recently made it to the loser's bench?

Hi, I’m new to the journey. I’m in the middle of assessment for revision surgery. I had a lapband in 2007 and had great success until it slipped in 2012. After losing 120 lbs I’ve now gained back 80. I’m now looking into either a VGS or RNY. Any advice on which one would be helpful. I suffer from mild heartburn infrequently so I’m concerned about reflux with the VGS. surgery won’t be until May or so due to my work schedule, but want to decide soon. The doctors are open to either for me. -

The ultimate decision is yours of course, but I would listen to your doctor's advice, he has done a lot of these procedures, and he wouldn't have suggested RnY if he hadn't seen a good reason for it. A lot of times they advise sleeve for people your age but as you see from the previous person a lot of times it needs revised. Why not go with just one surgery and get it done right the first time? Study up on both procedures, you'll only have 4or5,little iddie bitty slits in your tummy no matter which one. If you have a sleeve the left one is where they pull the majority of your stomach out, you do know you lose about 3/4 of your. stomach with that procedure? If you have a bypass that's where they put the biggest gauge equipment, in either case that will be the sorest if one has to be. You'll start on a beautiful new journey toward weight loss and better health, and also a longer lifespan. It will be worth it all! Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app -

Insurance Approval For Revision

Thank you jenn ! I hope I can have that same feeling in a couple month ! How long ago did you have your sugery ? How much have u lost so far? Anf was your a revision wls? Proud mommy to three amazing babies! -
If you struggle with food NO WLS is going to "fix" that, get your head straight first. I think you've already realized that a 2nd band isn't the answer and with what you posted about having an abcess etc. it "might' not be possible? Besides the studies don't support 2nd banding, I 'd put the link here but it would just get bashed to death. I'm sure your aware but revision to a sleeve will be slower weight loss and the actual long term WL results are better with the RNY=Bypass. Just depends on if you can/do take supplements due to the Mal absorption. I don't promote any 1 surgery over another it's your decision, But it's best to RESEARCH all the options, studies then decide WHAT YOU can live with!!! Your Doctor's NOT having the Surgery YOU ARE. GOOD LUCK

Lap band to gastric bypass
JlDee replied to angievasser42@gmail.com's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had banding done in 2001 and revision done in October 2019. I have to say I feel very underinformed about the differences in the surgery. Eating has gone well and I no longer have the acid reflux or vomiting issues I did with the band. SO I consider the surgery a success. -
With my lapband the anaesthetist screwed up and I woke up on the operating table as they were finishing up. So painful! and I keep having dreams about it with my revision surgery in 3 weeks! So did you with Lopez wake up in a normal bed a few hours later? haha x

I just have the band and my revision was just to flip the port back over and stitch it back in place...and recovery was much more painful for me than the original surgery. i don't ever want to go through that again.

My insuranance paid for it and for port revision had to pay co-pays and 350 dollars to be in the weight loss program

It works a little different here in Australia. Medicare, our public health system, pays for the bulk of the operation as its generally not argued that its not medically necessary as long as the surgeon has said he will do it. Our private health insurance pays for all hospital costs and surgeons and medical professionals usually charge a "gap" over and above the scheduled fee that Medicare will pay for any given procedure. For banding, the average gap is abotu $A3,000 so there's generally a one off payment of $3,000. For many surgeons that covers all aftercare for ever - every fill and any revision surgery as once they've charged the gap, many surgeons agree to simply bulk bill all maintenance/revision/supervision - meaning they bill Medicare direct only the scheduled cost. So its pricey but not out of the league of most people really. If its done under the public health system the wait is up to 7 years in many hospitals. Many surgeons will not touch self pay in Australia because they say that it leads to people not continuing with follow up treatment after surgery and if anything goes wrong and revision surgery is needed, costs mount up to re-mortgage your house kind of levels very quickly.

Here's my unusual story as to why I'm here
Ms.AntiBand replied to Suprisedtobesleeved's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wish I could have had the revision the same day and I wouldn't have gained 75lbs waiting to heal and be sleeved. You're lucky! I was too sick to have it the same day.. Or even same year. I am now sleeved and couldn't be happier Good luck! -
Ideas for what to tell people?

I stand by my post and refuse to argue on this forum. however I will revise it to say what everyone wants to hear because if you don't write what everyone wants to hear your a horrible irresponsible person (this is why I only have posted like 20 some times). Everyone is right, keep a secret for the rest of your life. Good idea! -

Band to Sleevers how many pounds did yu drop in the first 2 months ?
nowornever14 replied to nowornever14's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi JakeLancaster , You would not believe how many people claimed that the smaller Bougie is actually the better choice and if I would have done this blind without researching on the internet I probably would have followed their advise. But I am glad that after the moment my first surgeon (band surgeon who is retired now) suggested a revision and my second surgeon who actually did my surgery confirmed that it would be a good idea to make a sleeve when the band is removed, I started researching. Great topic, I am scheduled for my band to sleeve revision. I think the starting BMI has a lot to do with it too. I would be scared of the 44 size bougie, I really want this to be the last surgery. I get the acid problem with the band though and understand why you choose the large bougie I just do not want to risk it. I am prepared to lose slower than I did with my band, I was told revisions lose slower but your averages sound great. See you on the other side in a couple of weeks! I had only 2 months to make my decision. I was for hrs on the internet trying to find the newest research published by the medical world , newest studies and so on. I am glad I did!! Because even though I value VERY much real life report from Sleevers I still think that each and everyone of us has a subjective approach, which is often mixed with emotional statements. When I went to my last meeting with my surgeon I had a list of questions I needed to be answered by her. I made my decision depending on her answers at the end. I asked about : - which size of staples to use since different cases demand different staple sizes to prevent leakage - wanted to discuss her position on oversewing or not - and buttressing or not - on the problem with the hourglass shape or the twisted stomach in case of an ear curve which happens to be a problem with many surgeon because of the way they staple - on the fact that the staple line distance to the pylorus and the sphincter is crucial in regards to prevention of damage to both - and last but not least the size of my bougie because research shows clearly that there is no difference in the success of weight loss results with bougie sizes between 32F up to 40+ F The surgery in itself through the removal of 75% to 85% of ones stomach and therefor the reduction of the ghrelin (hunger producing hormone) production completely changes our metabolic biochemistry, which at the end causes us to lose weight. But the fact that a smaller bougie size is proven to have a significantly higher affect on GERD occurrence and on leakage made me 150% sure that I choosing a smaller size was a risk I was not willing to take. I can say I'm only one week out of surgery but I did not regret anything. I have no acid reflux symptoms not the slidest nor to I feel I could eat more than my fellow sleever. I am in close contact to sleeve friends who had been sleeved on the same day and when I read what they can eat and what I can eat there is no difference in size or portion. I agree with you Cowgirljane 100% the quality of life is much higher with the sleeve than it is or was with the band. I can not count all the times I was vomiting, the permanent hunger, or almost suffocating in my sleep because of horrific GERD or feeling I would die and having to go to emergency because some kind of food got stuck again and closed my stomach that I felt I was drowning on my own saliva. Since I have my band out and my sleeve in, I actually feel normal again..... I just feel like life is perfect and I just can only eat 2 or 3 spoons full of whatever I am eating for a meal. I feel as full and satisfied as I would have eaten 2 plates of food. I even do not feel the desire to step on the scale every day, which I did with each and every diet or with the band. I feel like all will come as it is supposed to be and that I will be back to my normal slim healthy weight before my illness. It almost sounds corny but I wake up every morning thinking : OMG I am so so happy . Happy I am alive . Happy I got rid of this band. Happy I made the decision to get the sleeve. Happy I feel like I am being a fully integrated part of our social life again soon. Happy I can do stuff with my grandchildren again. Happy I can go to every normal cloths store like before my illness and before my outrages weight gain soon. Happy Happy Happy that me second half of my life started last Monday!! -

Do u drink pepsi and coke??
DebSee replied to lily'ssleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have long term WLS friend with whom I was first banded (SAGB) in 2000. She developed complications a good 7yrs ago and she went the revision to Duodenal Switch route. She's required re-sleeving once in the last 5 years and says she could probably do with another resleeve, but is currently unable to fund it privately. She's a major diet coke drinker. We're all different. It's just doesn't take much to work out that with no carbonated drink addiction, my own band was not removed until February 2011. My pouch was intact, the port tubing was leaky. I was sleeved on the 18th Sept. and I don't expect to ever need resleeving. If I do, I can guarantee it won't be down to fizzy drinks since that's something which is absolutely under my own control. I can't make anyone elses' choices for them, nor would I want that kind of onerous responsibility. Neither can I remain silent when I've seen first hand resleeving required in a big diet coke drinker. -
Well it's been a while and I thought I would update everybody. I had a fill at the end of 2007. Then our insurance changed and I was told we had to bariatric coverage. I was due to see my surgeon in November. So things rocked along for a while. Then I had another slip Now I am being worked up for RNY. My new doc told me that my continuous slipping was a mechanical failure and there was nothing I could have done to prevent or to make my band work correctly after slipping. BIG RELIEF to know that I was not a failure and I shouldn't have any problems getting a revision surgery. So cross your fingers and maybe things will get better. I hope everybody else is doing okay. M
