    Is The Band That Bad?

I am confused - was this remark intended for me? I don't think the band is good and I in fact have revised to the sleeve. I frequently post on the revision board.

    Is The Band That Bad?

I don't think the band is that bad. It worked for me until I had an incident. I lost about 130 lbs with the band in the first two years. However, I kept up with my monthly fills and followed very closely with my surgeons. Unfortunately, about 2.5 years into being banded, I had a terrible stomach virus or food poisoning episode (I still don't know). I was never the same with the band again. I kept going back and forth to the surgeon for fills and unfills. I just never felt comfort again. Now I have managed to gain back 115 lbs. I think the band works, but you have to be committed to going for fills. Also, it isn't always pleasent either, but we must ask ourselves, what kind of WLS is perfect. I am sure the VSG has its issues also. One other thing to consider, I believe the rate of revision from Band to another WLS rate is much higher than the other WLS surgeries. (Don't quote me on that, but it just seems that way.) My tentative surgery date for a revision is September 17th. I choose this revision because I know that restriction works for me and I wanted to avoid the hassle of fills, etc.
  3. This is my first post... I wasn't sure where to post but this seems like an active board. I am scheduled for RNY gastric bypass on January 16th. I have a big appointment Thursday called a team meeting at my hospital and I'm hoping that is supportive. I've done a ton of research and gone through all of the pre-op clearances (just a few more appointments to go) and my spouse (who is naturally rather thin) is generally supportive, but I am still feeling very nervous and alone--and terrified about both the pre op liquid diet and the surgery itself, even though I am in therapy and emotionally preparing (long history of anxiety and depression--and yes, I have a psych clearance, but, like anyone, I struggle). I am doing this so I can be a healthy wife, mom to my five year old, and professor (that's what I do), but I just felt alone and overwhelmed in this moment, so I posted. This seems like a great community. Just looking to be part of it and learn from others. Weight last June (when I started to research): 275 Current weight: 264 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Is The Band That Bad?

My clinic does 3 surgeries bypass, sleeve and band. I read somewhere that 40% of all band patients have their bands removed due to one issue or another. I asked at the WLS seminar if this has been the experience at my clinic and the Nurse practitioner who is program manager said it is the case in our Bariatric program. With that being said 60% of our patients are maintaing their bands. For me a 40% revision rate is way too high!

    I'm a looser

Well I just got back from the gym. I caught a cold before Christmas, so I'm just getting my "wind" back and feeling like I can breathe again. Let me tell you - missing a couple of weeks can REALLY make it hard to get back on track. Unfortunately I don't have a very good support group in my corner, so its all on me. I don't own a scale at home, so I have to rely on weighing in at the doctor's office or at the gym. Anyway - I've made it a habit to weigh in after my work out before I leave the gym. I'm soooooo excited to say that as of today (1/4/14) I am officially under the 200lb mark weighing in at 197lbs! Can I say that again - 197 pounds! I've been able to see the results in my upper body and my legs, but I still have that "spare tire" that I can't seem to loose. My sister in law (a bypass patient) promises that if I stick with the gym it will eventually melt away. I hope she's right! We're going on a cruise in May and while I know I won't be in a bikini or anything, I'd sure love to feel comfortable in a bathing suit by then. I was sleeved on October 17, 2013. The day I went in for surgery I weighed 238 lbs. I wore a pair of size 22 jeans to the hospital and came home in a pair of XXL sweat pants. I'm happy to say that I'm comfortably in a size 16 right now. My leggings were beginning to sag in the butt, so I got new ones in a size Large! I bought a pair of 14 jeans yesterday to hang on the back of my bathroom door. Right now I can't even get them zipped, but gimme another month and I'll be there... I just wanted to share cause I know y'all "get it". Like I said, I don't have a really good support group to encourage me when I miss a couple of days at the gym, and I work out alone. My husband praises me and loves my new look, but I can't get him to walk or work out with me
  7. You can really learn a great deal from this website regarding the different types of surgeries. As far as what is right for you, I don't think anyone on this forum will be able to tell you 100% what is right for you. Your doctor should be able to give you his or her recommendation, although mine did not, he said the choice was mine. My reasoning to go with RNY had to do with the cravings that hopefully would be curbed from the actually bypassing that part of the stomach/intestines where cravings are created. I was a big sweets person before surgery and loved my bread, now I don't really miss either. That's why I chose this surgery. I can honestly say I had little or no pain after surgery and the post-op was really routine. Just as the post above, I see my weight loss surgery as one step in a life style change I started 4 months ago. The next being brand new healthy eating habits, and finally regular exercise. WLS will not be a "magic cure" on its own. but you can be really successful if you add the other steps. Best of luck in whatever one you decide!

    Any FEBRUARY sleevers?!

I'm Feb 16th too, band to sleeve revision, in New Orleans.
  9. I'm scheduled to have a revision from a sleeve to a mini gastric bypass in 5 weeks. I am way more scared than the first surgery. I think in part because I know what to expect post op (I had an awful recovery last time). Has anyone else felt like this before their revision?
  10. My Lapband, revision to Sleeve were both done by Dr. Richard Carter in Arlington. He has also been my general surgeon for other non-bariatric issues including bowel obstruction and hernia repairs. My wife and I both love him!

    Is dumping forever

My mom is 32 years post gastric bypass (the old stomach stapling) and still dumps off carbs....oatmeal or ride for breakfast will get her (and me) every time....so, for some, yes dumpling is forever.

    Struggling with the decision

Yes I'm really concerned about that too. I really like the surgeon and the doctor that is supervising my 6 month weight loss visits. However, the surgery coordinator is awful. When I told her I maybe wanted to change my surgery from gastric bypass to vsg, she asked if I had told the surgeon yet. When I told her that I hadn't, she laughed sarcastically and said "don't you kind of think he needs to know that?". She also cut me off every time I started to ask her a question and wrote on my paperwork that I hadn't attended the required seminar because she wouldn't wait long enough for me to look through my phone to find the date I went. I want to ask to work with someone else but I'm worried maybe she is the only one and then she will get mad at me and do even worse with my paperwork....

    Heartburn

I had my surgery in April 2017, and have had to take omeprazole ever since. I can stop taking it for like a week, but then the acid in stomach comes up into my throat. It's awful. My dr says its normal but sometimes people choose to go back and get the full bypass done to get rid of the acid.
  14. Hi Baseballmom...Thank you for your kind words and concern. I went to the dietician today and we did a test whereas i step on a scale and it tells all sorts of info about my body (fat percentage; how many calories i should be eating; bmi; etc). Well, she discovered that I am doing everything right...the problem is my metabolic makeup. From what she explained to me, out of every 100 patients, there is always that "1" who has that weird metabolism...well, unfortunately, I am that "1" person. Ugh...frustrating and not much anyone can do for me. She thinks even a revision may be a waste of time! Oh well...at least I kno it wasnt me doin something wrong!

    Any May sleevers out there?

the hardest part is getting my Water in each day, and also trying to keep my Vitamins in check. I seem to have something different low each visit. For example my Iron was low in my first set of labs, then without adding iron to my supplements it was fine the next time. But my b1/thiamin was low, and even with taking 2 super b tablets a day, it was still low. I am now taking 2 super b tablets and 2 b1/thiamin tablets a day and I just had labs drawn this week, and will have results next week. I am almost never hungry, and I can't stand sweets anymore. When they remove the bulk of your stomach they also remove the area that produces the hunger hormone, and the part that makes you crave sweets. I can't even do the kids chewable vitamins, they are too sweet and make me gag. So I take regular tablets, and they go down just fine. I take a handful of vitamins a day, and I'm healthy, happy and have more energy than I have ever had. I just posted a huge thread about my very emotional NSV tonight. My surgeon that is normally very composed, and not very friendly just very to the point, told me how proud he was of me, and corrected my mom when she said I had lost too much, and called me perfect and compared me to a Barbie. I joked that I gained 20 pounds just from my head swelling. I was banded in 2005 and started at 244 I lost a grand total of 40 pounds with my band. Then when I had my revision I was 206 the morning of surgery last May. So I have lost a total of 129 pounds total, but 91 of those were with my sleeve. I actually lost the 91 pounds in 7 months. I have been at goal since before Christmas.
  16. I had gastric bypass March 8th. So I'm almost 6 months out. As of this morning I'm down 97 pounds. To date I have lost a minimal amount of hair. This has been my biggest fear. My hair is my best feature. I have always had long, thick, and extremely healthy hair. Do you think I've made it through or is there still a chance hair loss can occur? 17. Hello! Before my gastric bypass I used to take diclofenac, an NSAID, for arthritis pain in my knees. As we know, NSAIDs are a no-no forever post bypass. I have severe arthritis and disk disease in my neck, and tylenol doesn't help. Is anyone aware of safe yet effective pain relief for bypass patients? Thanks, and hope you're all doing well! Please help - Gastric Bypass vs SADI

Your surgeon is right it is your decision, but, your surgeon also knows based on past patients experience and your health background, stats etc., what she feels based on her experience what would be the best for you. The surgery itself, the aftercare and long term outcome. I've never had to throw up, get the runs or any issues with my bypass. I feel most ppl don't have issues, but you hear about these that do, because why post everything is great I have no issues or questions? I chose the bypass because I have the worst luck known to mankind and I just knew I'd start getting acid refux/GERD if I didn't and I'd be back for a revision later. I've had no issues - none! I'm not sure why you think getting a SADI wouldn't have a chance to effect you the same way a standard bypass would. There is still the possibility of nausea/vomiting etc. I think if you only have 100 lbs to lose ....I agree with your surgeon, it might be a bit much unless you have diabetes or a BMI of 50% or higher. Just my two cents..although with todays economy..maybe its only worth a half cent! Finally, you won't spend your entire life only eating a spoonful of food at each meal, just smaller portions.

    I'ts a Secret

i agree with everyone else. dont go through this alone. it is SURGERY. i know it may be difficult because you think he will not understand, but think of how he may react if you do it without telling him. if my DH did that to me, i would be livid! when you sit him down, maybe tell him not to interrupt you and give him your reasons why you want it. tell him that it IS safer than bypass, etc... you can still plan on having the surgery, even if he is not 100% on board with the idea of banding, ask him to be there for you the day you have surgery. best of luck to you and keep us posted.

    Relationship Troubles

I know I am SUPER late to this thread!! But I just left my fiance three weeks ago. We'd been together for a little over 3 years. Matter of fact we celebrated our 3-year with a trip to Chicago in Feb.... Anyways. Long story short. He was emotionally and physically abusive on top of incredibly irresponsible. And he has a son, whom I call my own bc his bio mom basically abandoned him when my ex and her divorced. The last straw in our relationship was when he stole, yes STOLE almost half of the loan money I had taken out for my VSG revision!!!! He was NOT supportive of my revision from day 1. I told him he either supports me or he doesn't, I am doing what's best for me and my health. I got the money back - thank GOD, but I left him that day. I am still riding the ups and downs of the post-break-up roller coaster. And when I am great I'm GREAT, and when I'm bad I'm bad. I stayed with him for so much longer than I should of because I gained about 80 lbs while being with him (he was SUCH an enabler with my food addiction) and I had/have no self confidence and I was plum scared of being alone. So I chose to be unhappy in my relationship over being alone. I now am alone and I know one day I will be better, but I am still suffering. Especially since within 72 hours of me leaving him he up and left for Texas with my son.... I am sad to be alone but even more sad that my son is gone.... Even though I KNOW this was the right decision 150%, it's hard to think that there will ever be a man out there for me! But there was a REASON I was engaged to this man for 2 years and would never marry him. In my gut I ALWAYS knew, and would ALWAYS make excuses. And like you, BBJ, I found myself having issues being attracted to him. Prior to him I'd always dated very in-shape men, and he had a gut and no motivation to be healthy with me. I hope that one day once I drop this weight that I have my confidence back like you do BBJ! More power to ya girl!!! If anyone is interested, I've been blogging about my WLS since Dec 2010, and there's more details about all this there.... www.diaryofafatwhitewoman.blogspot.com

    Struggling with the decision

@hardwork&dedication - I'm 8 months out. I'm 55. I wish I had done this sooner. As for the kiddos - I was 37 when I had my first and 41 when I had my second - they are now 17 (graduating high school) and 14 (finishing 8th grade). By the time you are ready to fly to Paris, if you want a macaron, you can have one. Just adjust the rest of your calories that day. I've lost 72% of my excess weight and am 30 pounds from goal. I'm not sure I'm going to get to the goal I set because I'm putting on a lot of muscle with the exercise I'm doing. I've gone from squeezing into a size 22 to being comfortable in a size 10. Your family is concerned because surgery, any kind, is risky. Having kids is risky. There are 18.5 maternal deaths in every 100,000 live births. Is that going to keep you from having children? In terms of VSG vs. bypass - talk to your surgeon - s/he is the expert and can tell you what would be best for you given your physical condition. I had a sleeve and am very happy with it. Best of luck.

    So I've been thinking =/

I love my band, haven't had any complications, but if I had to do it again or have a redo, I'd definitely consider the sleeve. The bypass? Not a chance. As a nurse in hospital and later in home health and hospice I've seen some ugly by products of the bypass. In all of those cases, pts were either very heavy and malnourished or 80 lbs or so and malnourished. And the problems they has were nearly always irreversible. Another thing I've read recently is that intussusception is more common in bypass than originally known or reported. That alone would be enough to stop me.
  24. Hey, long time no talk. I cannot decide what I want to do! I am not getting anywhere on my own. I am pretty much where I started when I first got the surgery the first time. It's just making me more depressed. I am trying and trying to lose it all on my own, but not having that restriction of feeling full I don't know when to stop. I never feel full like I did when I had the band. I was actually able to lose weight when I had the band, looking back, it really was helping me. It sucks that my infection i recieved when I had revision surgery made me lose my band I am SO scared to get it again because what if this time my body can't handle it and I die? :/ I'm so scared that what happened back in april where I had to get the revision surgery and get my band removed due to the abscess and then having high fever and high heart rate because of it. Being stuck in a hospital for a week with drain tubes and a feeding tube, what if that happened again? That was such a traumatic event So scared. I feel like I should do it tho. I am not getting anywhere with what I am doing now. The only way I lost like 10 pounds in October was because I wasn't really eating and you have to eat to lose weight. People are trying to back me out of it too. Why can't they just support me in what I think is best for me? The people that back me out of it are already skinny people and they seem to not understand that some people just can't lose it on their own. I am one of them. Decisions, decisions. *sigh*
  25. I am so excited... I didnt use my insurance coz it is so ridiculous... I have to pay $5000 + 20% of the surgery that would total to $7000... The surgery is only $9988. So, i have decided to just pay it n my own and use the bariatric surgery some other time if I need to do the gastric bypass which I doubt. I am very excited! I don have to go in so many hoops if i go with my insurance. Government insurance sucks ... I wish they have better plans someday!
