Overwelmed Got My Surgery Date: 10/22/13 (Now I'm shaking in my boots!)
Trebor posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For the last 12+ years I've desperately wanted and sought bariatric surgery. Now that I'm less than 30 days away from my dream coming true, I find myself full of fear and dread Last week, I was approved for surgery and my wife was denied by the insurance company. We planned to do this together. Her surgery would have come only weeks after mine; now I'll be taking this journey alone. I know she'll be there to support me but somehow, it doesn't seem the same. Logically, I know that I will come through this with flying colors. I completed the 4 month, supervised diet without a hitch. I surprised myself by losing 22 lbs. In 4 months I proved to myself that I could drastically change my eating habits and my lifestyle. I expect to have the same success in the months/years after the surgery. The source of dread is the immediate aftermath of the surgery. I've never had major surgery before. I've never had a catheter and the thought of it makes this big manly-man want to run and hide. I've never been afraid of doctors, hospitals and needles but this is a whole different ball game. A few weeks ago, on YouTube, I watched a video of the procedure being performed; BIG MISTAKE!!!! Now, that the day is near, I can't stop thinking about how painful it will be when the meds wear off. I'm assuming that my expectations of pain and suffering is greatly exaggerated. Can anyone help me set some reasonable expectations? Thanks, Treb -
I worry about it as well. I'll say this, it takes some work to really stretch a pouch out. My best friend had a RNY GB 12 years or so ago. He eats whatever he wants, and has failed miserably at the whole weight loss thing (from 700 pounds to 400) but even with that, he can't eat more than a single piece of pizza at a time. His issue, is that he'll start on a pizza at 1700, and by the time he goes to bed, he will have eaten the whole thing, one slice at a time. So, i'll go on record stating that while it is certainly possible to stretch your pouch, it is not easy, if it were my freind would be dead by now. In fact, he has a number of extremely severe health issues relating to, you guessed it, morbid obesity. He has become so anemic that he has to to the hospital three days a week and be infused with Iron via a slow drip, as his body has completely lost the ability to absorb Iron. His Vitamin D is heading the same way, I think his current Vitamin D is 200,000 IU a week and even that has not brought his levels up to normal. He'll die fairly soon I think, we've been friends for 30 years, and I'll miss him, but this is all his doing. I talked until I was blue in the face and he laughed everything off. Oh and he needs double knee replacements, complete knee replacements, at 42 years old. Not good.

Susie so they go by the measure the day of the surgery and not the A1c!?? My concern is that if they go by the A1c I will have to wait 3 months for my surgery. The Dr will answer these questions next week but I am just inpatient. I think is normal based on my situation. Thanks for your help.

Yes, I have the Lap Band. I didn't have many health issues, just PCOS and I have been off my Metformin since surgery and all of my PCOS symptoms have improved most have disappeared. I go to see my Endo in November for bloodwork to make sure that my PCOS is in remission. I also had back and knee pain that is gone now and I sleep more comfortably at night. I had mine done about four months ago and I am down 49 pounds and half way to my goal weight already. I have had no problems with the procedure. I was back to work within a week and feeling great within two weeks. -
Dr. Miguel Rojas is the surgeon I went to. I did have to make a visit to my own doctor when I returned because my incision over the port got infected so he put me on an oral antibiotic and the infection seems to be getting better. It was a local infection so it should clear up quickly. But this one incision seems to be a little sore....sure hope that clears up soon. How long are you supposed to be on liquids? My doctor told be 3 weeks but I'm seeing different lengths of time on this site.

Congratulations on your new journey! I understand about simply knowing it is time to make the change. I was the same way. I just knew I was ready and never looked back. For your burping, have you tried gas medicines? After I had surgery in 2007, I used the disolvable strips. They did work okay, but the chewables were better. I just used the CVS store brand and they helped. The gas subsided after about two to three weeks, if I remember correctly. Check with your surgeon to see what you can take for it. As far as picking a goal weight, I'm sure your doctor can help you with that. I know what you mean about thinking in terms of size, though. I shoot for body fat percentage first, size second....and the number on the scale is the least of my concerns. I will have to admit that it was tons of fun watching the scale drop so fast right after surgery! Keep posting and letting us know how you're doing!

Thanks for missing me. I was enduring the worst ice storm in memory here in Oklahoma. I had no electricity or internet for a week. But I'm baaaaaack.

Hi All--- I was sleeved on 6/27/14, overall it's been a great experience. The hardest thing I'm dealing with is comparing myself to others. I'm almost 8 weeks post op and have lost 35 lbs. Others I know that had the surgery after me are further along in their weight loss. So I'm looking for a little inspiration and other people who feel great but the number on the scale doesn't show it as much?? Feeling frustrated :/

4 days out.. And feel like crap..
Kay P replied to danika1118's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry you are having a tough time. First of all, be assured that everything gets better with a little bit of time, hang in there, its worth what you are experiencing now. I am four months post-op. When I came out of surgery I was very uncorfortable, I couldn't sit up, lay on my side or walk without pain. The most important thing that got me through it was an abdominal wrap. I wore it 24 hours a day for three full weeks. liquid pain meds are what helpedme sleep and definitely took the edge off the severe sharp pains at the incision areas but the abdominal wrap kept everything snug and was the only way I was able to walk and sleep. If the hospital did not send you home with one I would highly recommend that you invest in one of these from a local medical supply business. My surgeon reminded me after seven says that I had major surgery, my abdominal muscles had been disrupted by the tools, tubes, etc. and that everything needed to heal. I continued with my pain meds and my beloved abdominal wrap and after three weeks the pain was completely gone. It would have been gone earlier but I am not good at taking it easy and did too much the first two weeks, a mistake I would not make again. Bottom line, give your body time to heal, take it easy, use your pain medication and invest in an abdonimal wrap. Congratulations on your big decision, the best is yet to come. -
I was banded this morning, so this is my fist post in post op baby!!! The surgery went really well, only three incisions and they repaired a small hernia. So surreal to be on the "other side"!

Finally got insurance approval and now scared of surgery
goblue9280 replied to slimjen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery on Oct 1st and I was absolutely terrified of going under... it was my biggest fear. Like you, I'd never had surgery with general anesthesia. I was worried that I would wake up during the surgery or even worse, never wake up. I had an awful time sleeping the night before. My stomach was in knots all the way to the hospital at 5am, and then waiting to go back for prep. My wife stayed with me all the way until they rolled me to the operating room. When she broke off to go to the waiting room, I had tears, I was a mess. I got to the operating room and I'm sure they saw the fear in my eyes. They had me get on the table, strapped my arms out to form a T, and put some monitors on. The anesthesiologist (who was not the one that came by and met me an hour earlier) never said anything to me until she said "I'm giving you some medicine now" at the same time the nurse had a mask over my mouth and said to breath... and that was all I remember. Next thing I know I'm waking up in the recovery room, completely at ease. I know where you are... before surgery, I laid my fear out on here just like you. It definitely helped to get everything out, and it was awesome to read the responses from everyone that it would be ok. Knowing where you are, I understand there isn't much I can say to put your mind at ease. You are going to be scared, and that's ok, but don't cancel your surgery over it. Roll with the fear and I promise you'll be laughing about it the week after surgery. -
Surgery scares!
cheryl missouri replied to melbell2222's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 4 weeks out and couldn't be happier. I think you need to listen and follow the rules CLOSE. It's important not to eat something tooooo early. U have to wait until you are told. That causes lots of problems. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I need a thigh lift. I am more terrified of this than the tummy tuck. Did you have an incision down the innner thigh? Did you also get lipo on the inner and outer thigh? What was your recovery time? I am thinking 2 weeks off of work, is that realistic? How much was the cost? I heard it was very painful so I'm pretty scared. How was your experience? How much did you lose, from what size, how much fat, etc. Sorry for all the questions!

I still have to drink protein shakes for at least three weeks before starting the mushies stage. So I don't have any experience yet with blended foods. I suppose every body is different, and my body might be recovering more from the hernia repair I had as well as the Lap Band. Sorry I'm not much help!

Vitamin D Deficiency
palmtreegirl70 replied to Wishingforanewme's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My doctor just called this week with results from my blood work, and I have been prescribed 50,000IU capsules as well. What difference can you tell taking them? Is it energy? -
My TT is in 4 weeks and my Lap Band Surgeon said I MUST be UNFILLED
Sue Magoo replied to spoiltmom's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Hi: The most important thing about post tummy tuck is making sure that you've got enough nutrition to heal well. So, don't be concerned about 1,000 calories a day. Be happy to maintain. I had tummy tuck with muscle repair, but my port stayed where it was (top of tummy - just under middle of rib cage). I think I got refilled at either 3 or 4 weeks after tummy tuck. By then it was not too uncomfortable to get into the proper position for a fill in that area. You'll be surprised at how numb some areas are after the initial healing time. So, it may not be that uncomfortable. They'll probably fill you gradually because that's the most safe way to approach fills. Best wishes. Can't wait to see pictures or hear your comments. You're gonna love your flat tummy! Sue -
Reasons For Medically Necessary Tummy Tuck
khath0620 replied to Shoegal217's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I just had my TT last week and insurance would only pay for the panniculectomy, not the tummy tuck part. I had well documented rashes due to the overhanging skin. The panniculectomy is where they remove just the overhang where the abdominoplasty (a.k.a. tummy tuck) they release the skin up to your sternum and pull it down as well as tighten your abdominal muscles. The panniculectomy was medical, the abdominoplasty is cosmetic. I did have some out of pocket expense for a portion of the surgery. You can look into CareCredit loans or, as I did, did a balance transfer to a 0% credit card and will pay it off in 21 months. I hated to burden my family with that expense but it was well worth it both on an emotional and a physical level. good luck, Katie -
My surgeon required fluid removed. I can have place back in a couple of weeks. Insurance did not cover it. I paid 6150- for full tuck. Muscle repai mad lip0- he did give me a professional courtesy discount since I'm in the medical field. Yesterday I felt great. Today a little sore when walking. But I'm keeping my meds in around the clock. Drains should be coming out Wednesday . I have yet to take the binder off- I'm not ready to do that just yet. I would like to give it time to,heal. Before looking. I can't shower until Sunday:(

Hey guys I'm looking for some advice.i am 4 1/2 months after my gastric sleeve and I'm at a complete stop I've only lost about 45 pounds 20 of which were from the first month and after that very slow weight loss a couple of pounds at a time and then I just stalled and I can't figure out why my body doesn't want to lose anymore of the weight ? I have been very stressed out Leavy so I'm guessing it's the stress but does anybody have any ideas of good ways to go about getting over this stall? Any advice is appreciated I'm going crazy trying to figure out why its so hard to get over this stall .what it is I work out here and there maybe I need to be working out a lot more but I see that some people walk and are having okay weight-loss. ??

I had a lower body lift, not a panniculectomy exactly 3 weeks ago. I am doing well but recovery is no joke. I swell a lot throughout the day putting on as much as 4 lbs of water. I still get tired in the middle of the day. I am thrilled with the results and bought new panties yesterday to treat myself. Size 5 bikini. They looked so tiny but they fit. I am off from work another 4 weeks and am glad I took that time off to recover. It is a hard surgery but the results are wonderful. You'll love how you look after your panniculectomy.

I'm just 2 shorts weeks from my scheduled tummy tuck. I'm making a last ditch effort to weight train (arms) and build my stomach muscles. The surgeon wasn't sure how much muscle I had and the condition of them after a C-section and VSG. Has anyone worked extra hard before their TT to build muscle and do you think it helped? Any advice on things I should wear after (sports bra) and things I should have in the house? Thanks for any guidance.
