It's Confirmed!- Dr.Jose Rodriguez
ATLGirl posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am scheduled for my Gastric Plication Surgery with Dr.Jose Rodriguez in TJ on Feb. 10, 2011! I haven't decided how I will chronical this journey, but I know I want to. I am starting now getting essential items like Vitamins, pain meds, and other recommended items. I know this has been asked dozens of times, but if you have any recommendations for what to get- please let me know. What could you not live without? What are the Dos and Don'ts? The Must-Haves? Got it and Love 'ems? I am thinking about putting this information in ONE spot on my blog. Let me know what you guys thinks. -
Afternoon all, I'm half way to the process needed to get the importantly needed surgery. Monday, I met with my primary care physician so that she could write a letter of recommendation to the surgeon, which she happily did. She also ordered the labs that my surgeon requested be completed. I just received the results of some of the fasting labs I had drawn this moring. I can't believe some of the numbers! I am so upset with myself for allowing myself to get to this point. Sorry, I guess this is a pitty party post. I just have to get this out. I know that, yes, I'm over weight (or as my chart says morbidly obese) but these labs and recently changes in my body are showing me (although I had been ignoring them) that I have an issue with food. I know what to eat and how much to eat but I choice to ignore it because I like food. I know I could chose better food options like an apple over chips but sad thing is I like them both and usually end up eating the apple AND the chips. My surgeon is requiring that I lose 10 pounds. I know it's not a lot but I haven't been able to lose 5 pounds. I am so ready for a lifestyle change that I am forced to abide by. As of tomorrow, I have decided to start to drink Protein shakes regularly to substitute a few meals for the week. We'll see how that goes. I'm wondering how many folks who've had this surgery end up having some sort of therapy for "compulsive eating?" I didn't think I was a food addict or anything, even with all the indulging but now I'm wondering if maybe I am. Anyhow, thanks for listening. I know things will get better. Those labs just through me. Shari

Heyy Kimberly Thanks for posting. I'm so happy to see that there are other people around my age on this website. Exactly, none of my friends really understand so now I'll just come here and talk to you guys about my band when I get it haha. I know it's not going to be easy, but I plan on doing everything I can to lose this weight. I'm hoping to gain a lot of confidence from it. I'll keep you guys updated after I get it. 10 days! ahhh so stoked. Oh and I forgot to ask, where are you from?

Under 50 lbs to lose - would you recommend the sleeve (after band removal)
Cleo's Mom posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have posted this elsewhere and got several replies - none encouraging - so I will try here: I want the lap band removed (placed in 2008 by different surgeon) but I am still struggling with the decision to get the sleeve. Ultimately I know the decision is mine and I have to do what I think is right but I'd like some practical (not philosophical) advice. To me the main purpose of any WSL should be to improve one's quality of life. If losing weight does that - great. If your medical conditions improve - great. If you can do things you couldn't do before - great. And finally - if you look and feel better - great. My band is unfilled now and I can eat most anything. It is a crap shoot though as to when I get stuck or feel very uncomfortable and need to make myself throw up. I also get left shoulder pain. I was diagnosed with GERD many years ago and have been on nexium for about 10 years - so I have no heartburn or symptoms of GERD. During this time I have slept elevated. At age 64 I have chronic back pain and arthritis. Tylenol is not effective. My weight doesn't keep me from doing anything - more so the back pain and arthritis (neither of which improved with my weight loss with the band). So that brings me to my dilemma: I am at a BMI of 35 and the surgeon says I can expect to lose about 45 pounds. And I won't be able to take NSAIDS for life to treat my pain. I have also read that about 1/3 of those who didn't have acid reflux develop it after the sleeve. I have also heard the word "stuck" and vomiting and sliming with referral to the sleeve. Then there are all the foods (even healthy ones) that one cannot eat after the sleeve and many posts about problems with foods - getting enough Protein, etc... So, I guess what I am trying to decide is if the sleeve will improve the quality of my life or create problems I don't have now without benefits to my medical conditions (that's asking a lot for 45 pounds). Any advice - especially from those who didn't have a lot of weigh to lose? -
Third & Fourth Week Post OP
jbflorida replied to @Ashley@'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ashley and all, I spent 2 weeks preop with Optifast. I did just fine. Post op was Clear Liquids for 14 days. Today was Day 10 and I called the doctor because I really feel a difference in the hunger! 100 calories a day, feeling weak, blood pressure getting low-- The PA told me to have one Optifast today. I was so happy, you'd think she told me to go to a buffet. Tomorrow--2 Optifast and then on the full liquids on Saturday, instead of next Tuesday. She said my band would be fine. So this is bandster hell. The swelling has gone down and the hunger has returned. With a vengence! I will be good about the full liquids as I really want this to work! It WILL work--and I will "work it." Down 24.5 lbs as of this AM--banded on May 13. Started at 217, now 192.5. Have to buy new pants. -
Port Site Bump - Painful - Should I Be Concerned? Pls Help...
gd;dagjlkg posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Greetings everyone, Thank you for taking a moment to read about my issue and helping. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since I've been banded. For the first two weeks after surgery I stayed home to heal. Last week I went back to work and this weekend I went on a little get-away with my friend. I have terrible parking where I work and have to walk about 6 blocks to and from each day. Last week I got a little tired walking back and forth. I do carry a backpack with my lunch and work files. Perhaps 10 or 15 pounds. I thought I did ok - just a little tiring, not painful. This weekend we went to Grouse Mountain in Vancouver. On the drive there from Seattle I started to get pain at my port site. (I have a two inch incision on my right side under my rib cage). The pain is at the left end of the incision and I'm starting to feel a bump or protrusion there. I did pick up my suitcase and put it in the trunk of her car which probably weighed 30 pounds or so and also pulled it out that night once we got to the hotel and as I rested that night the pain went away although I could still feel the bump. I also had jeans on and the band of the pants were against the incision while we were driving, but it didn't feel tight or painful. So then the next day at the resort we walked around, I walked up and down stairs, walked up and down inclines, etc. It kept getting painful at the port site and my friend and I would have to stop for me to rest. We left after a short time because I couldn't easily walk. It doesn't hurt as much when I'm sitting down, but I can definitely feel the bump. When I'm standing it is more painful and protrudes more. It seems to hurt the most when standing still, but the pain is also pretty significant when walking. Please help... I gave all the details above to explain exactly what I've done. Could it be the port sticking out? Do I need surgery to have it pushed in further? Could it be a hernia? I just don't understand what it could be because I don't feel I've done anything crazy or out of the ordinary. Thanks to all for your support and advice. -
Body Wraps? Does It Really Tighten Your Loose Skin?
carbgrl replied to JaspersGirl's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I've done wraps several times (5-10) times a few years ago when I lost weight through dieting. I think it does help thigten the skin. I plan doing it again at least once a month this time around. I will do anything I can to avoid anymore surgery. I firmly believe it helps to shape the body the way it should be. If you don't go crazy eating junk food afterwards the effects do last. Someone else posted some other tips and tricks on here which includes dry brushing the skin. I've done that before too and I will start that again. -

Ugh! Surgeon called me today to cancel my surgery
Katerbug1 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got a phone call from Surgeon to cancel my surgery earlier today. I was on day 5 of my liquid diet only 10 days away from getting my surgery. Long story short his contract with the hospital ends this and my surgery date was July 12 he said that he won't be able to preform the surgery because he won't be able to treat me if they there were to be any complications after .... This make me so mad and sad....I went through all this this for nothing!!! He said I could wait for him until he moves to his new location which will be in September or I could look for another surgeon to do my surgery and he would give them my file that I completed every single test required.... What should do? What can I do? Please someone give me advice.... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I am 3 1/2 months out from surgery and just got back from a 10 day, tropical Caribbean vacation. The vacation was planned before I even decided to have surgery and have been stressed about going due to eating restrictions. I am back, and actually down 2 lbs. I average 2 lbs every 7-9 days now, so I was right on track. I had a cocktail each day (usually only got through about 1/2 of it) and stuck to the plan to the best of my ability. Due to flight issues coming and going, going to restaurants who didn't have what I needed, I was sometimes stuck with bad food choices but did my best to eat right (scraping off and eating only the pizza toppings, getting a chicken salad and only eating the chicken, getting fried food and scraping off the outside, etc.). I will say it was not as difficult as I thought it would be but am relieved that I can get back on track. Being on vacation with 10 people, none of who knew I had the surgery, made it a bit tougher. I will say watching them eat and drink in "vacation mode" made me a little nauseous - not envious at all. Most of them gained 7-10 lbs! Then I remembered, oh yeah, that was me not too long ago. So those dreading going on vacation, you can do it!

I haven’t had my surgery yet, but 10 hours is a long day and I’m guessing in a warehouse your pretty active. Maybe since you are only 2 months post op your body is trying to tell you to rest so you can heal. Take care of yourself. -
I am going to do it!!!!
RestlessMonkey replied to brownskin82's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My surgery was 1 month after the seminar...7/10 seminar, 8/11 surgery. However even after a 3 week preop loss of 15 pounds my liver was still fatty so I got the band 8/29, which comes to .... just over 7 weeks total. Self pay people could probably have gotten in a little more quickly...so I guess this month is feasible if they told you it could happen that quickly! My doc's office told us at the seminar the fastest they could make it happen with all the preop tests etc would be 2 weeks. I guess it depends on your locale, surgeon, and situation! -
Thanks for the link! My son had me "carve" pumpkins for 10 minutes...

How much exercise do you do weekly?
BobbyD replied to ididit34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I walk when I could drive, I take stairs when I could take an elevator, I use the elliptical while watching househunters, I walk the dogs. My goal is 10,000 steps a day (usually getting around 6-7000) 20 minutes on the elliptical ( many times only getting 15) 10 minutes on the weights (most times 6 minutes) and walking the dogs around the neighborhood (if it's warm enough). When I miss one I try to make it up on the other. I like choices. -
Hi everyone! Newbie here...
NancyLF replied to LizzieMmmkay's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
WELCOME, LIZZIE!! My doctor had been urging me to have the surgery for 2 years. I wasn't emotionally ready. When my hip was getting worse, I went to the orthopedic surgeon pretty much knowing I needed hip replacement surgery. He said I needed to lose weight before he could do the surgery safely. He's the one who recommended my bariatric surgeon. Their requirements included meeting with a Dietitian, Phycologist & 6 month weight study. My doctor, since I've been seeing him for over 25 years, had the weight info. He just went back 6 months & filled in the form. I think he was so happy I was finally doing it, he would have filled out 20 years of forms! LOL! My 1st meeting with the Bariatric surgeon was 3/29/2019. My surgery was 7/22/2019. It could have been sooner (in May) but the date they had available conflicted with another event on my calendar, so I was scheduled for June. Then I failed my stress test (part of my clearance fo the surgery), so I ended up with the July date. I was lucky, I guess. My doctor is very pleased. He kept teasing me about waiting 2 years. I'm SO glad I did it & yes, I wish (now) that I had it done years ago. This site has been very helpful. While everyone's experiences are different, there's a lot of info. The Store has SO many products! Some are yummy... some not so much. I also found many YouTube videos that were inspiring and informative. There are even some of the actual surgery! WARNING: Don't watch if you're the squeamish type. This was a long way around to tell you not to let the delay deter you. My surgery was 4 weeks ago today. I have lost 40 pounds. I have been taken off 2 of my diabetes meds. My happy moment today was when I was able to move the weight on the doctor's scale from the 250 to the 200 mark. One of the girls in my church told me, "Miss Nancy, you look smaller!" Believe me, it's worth it! -
Hi, Yes sometimes family and friends become more of a problem than help, and right now you just need some peace in your life. You really don't and won't have hunger. What you are having is "head hunger" your head is telling you that "IT" wants to eat, because for all your life the head has rules what and when you were eating. Now you are going to take control and pick how much, and when you are going to eat. It takes a good two months to get this habit going. That is why the first month is the hardest. When people bring things in the house--it is the smell of the food that you are dealing with. Ask them to please not do this for this first month. If they want something else please eat it where they picked up the food. It is really hard when someone does that to you. Glad to hear that your pain is going away. Each day it gets better. You just have to adapt to the lifestyle changes that you are going to be making. Healthy choices when it comes to food. I have a new Protein Drink that I just love. I have ALWAYS just had Premier Protein Drink that I got at costco after 3 years I wanted to try something different. I wanted to try something different and so I had heard a lot of people talk about "Mint Cookies." It is sooooooooooo good. This is where I ordered it from www.netrition.com The item number to order this is 39-0963 it is made by Syntrax and you can have it in the 2nd 10 days. The Label says Matrix 2.0 Mint Cookies This might be something that would make it a little easier for you. The cost of it is $22.95 for 2.16 lbs. It truly is good. You can mix it with water or milk. I use Skim Milk. They have other flavors once you get to the site and find it. I have also ordered banana Cream--have not tasted it yet. Hang in there it will get a whole lot better. Hugs, Suzanne

Hey Jackie, that is just what I am here for. My goal is to help others and pass on what I have learned along the way. I had some wonderful people who really helped me when I had my surgery and we have become good friends along the way. You are doing fantastic with your weight loss Yeah for Jackie. You honestly have to stop and have talks with yourself--so your brain understands who is in charge. Your brain can play some nasty tricks on you along with the smell of food the they are bringing into the house. I am sure they don't even think about it but sit down and nicely tell them, right now this is NOT working at all for you. 2 more days, I can still remember when when I got to start on the 2nd 10 days. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I got to have creamy soup--and I could only get down about 1/4 of a cup not even all that, but it taste soooooo good. You can and will do this and you are going to be so successful. sugar free Popsicles were really good too--get some of those and try them. Just remember you have earned the right to be skinny and it is going to happen. Hugs, Suzanne

How about protein in the evening rather than carbs (chips)? Just an idea. I've been feeling "hungry" (weak) around 10 pm and I'm only 1.5 weeks sleeved. So I have started making a protein drink and having just the first few sips then, saving the rest for morning.
