  1. Inner Surfer Girl

    Texas Newbie

Welcome. I'm in my 50s (that may be the first time I have ever written that statement) and have a higher BMI than you. I was recently sleeved on April 20. Don't assume that based on BMI that you have to go with the bypass. Everyone is different and your surgeon and research should help you decide on the best procedure for you. Best of luck.
  2. Keep in mind that when these doctors are talking about success rates, 'success' is determined by patients losing 50% of their weight...and they only track for a short period of time. By those guidelines, bypass is far more successful, because patients will lose about 60% of their excess weight just from the malabsorption aspect of the surgery...and they'll lose it quickly. However, you read the statistics 2-3 years out, you'll find that it sort of all evens out and there's little difference between any of the WLS surgeries in terms of 'true success'. There are many bypass patients who never lose any more than that and some will actually gain their weight back. Some do just fine after surgery, but there are also people who have one medical problem after another as a result of the malabsorption...and you never know which one you're going to be until it's too late and you're stuck with whatever it is because it's not reversible. I've had my band for 15 months now and am having it taken out due to constant phrenic nerve pain in my shoulder. I'm still debating whether I'll have the revision to a sleeve. I'm not worried about any 'leaks'...the success rate without postop complications is very very good. I just haven't wrapped my head around the idea of cutting out most of my stomach...but that's just me. If I could get my head around that, knowing what I now know about the band...I'd do the vertical sleeve without any qualms.
  3. 3 months of supervised diet? DONE Psych eval? DONE 17 pages of notes sent to BCBS for approval? DONE My packet o' papers was faxed over to Blue Cross this morning! This is our second shot at approval. I think we dotted and crossed everything now and I will be approved this time. I lost 15 pounds on the supervised diet but find myself doing a little cheating lately since the 3 months is done and I want to eat whatever I want while I can. Anyone else in the same boat as me? I was hoping for November surgery and now I'm thinking it's going to be January. It'll be a good way to start the new year!
  4. My pre op diet was 5 protein shakes a day and I believe it was one to three cups veggies. It’s hard but it’s so worth it. What surgery are you getting? Are you getting the sleeve? Or the bypass? Do you have a support system? That helped me stay accountable for my diet and they kept reminding me why I was doing the diet. And when I was head hungry I just ended up drinking water so I didn’t snack or cheat on my diet to much. You can get past this! It’ll be worth it!
  5. Greetings everyone. I have been lurking here for a week or so. I've struggled with my weight since I was a child (joined weight watchers for the 1st time @ 12). I can't count the number of times I have joined that program since then. I always seem to loose 20 or 30 lbs and then stall out completely. I did once go from 210 to 150 in a 6 month period of time after a very bad end to a long term relationship. LOL, that was the first time in my life I just could not eat! It was not the healthy way to do it, though! I have known several co-workers who had lap band procedure done and had great success. I was never sure if I would qualify or not, though. When I went for my yearly physical in Jan. my PCP noted that I had gained some significant weight over the last year. She asked if I had ever consisdered bariatric surgery (she had gastric bypass done herself about 6 years ago). I told her I did not know if I would qualify or not as I do not have any major health issues. She suggested doing a referral to the surgeon in my area who does this type of procedure and to discuss with him whether I meet the qualifications or not and whether gastric bypass or the lap band would be best for me. I am leaning toward the lap band. I am 5' 2.75" and am between 220 & 230 # at the moment (I don't weigh myself). At any rate, my pcp made the referral to Dr. Jamie Loggins. I have my first appointment on March 13. I received a big packet of paperwork that I have already filled out. The person who called to set up the appointment advised I should expect to be there for 2 hours. Any idea what I can expect during those two hours? I am assuming since I have seen a number of co-workers go through this process, that my health insurance is fairly good about approving it. I have Anthem as insurance. Anyone have experience w/ this company? Look forward to learning lots here and getting to know you all! TSB

Well you are right on the edge of a qualifying BMI. If you weight 230, you are okay. If you weigh 220, you may be a bit under. You might want to weigh yourself and then make sure you meet a minimum BMI of 40 at your initial consult. If they put your height down as 5'2", that will help too. I've heard BCBS is pretty straightforward if you want a band or bypass. So that's good.
  7. I'm in the pre op stage so I can't offer any help but I'd like to follow the thread because I'm trying to decide between the sleeve or bypass. I've heard a lot more people talk about little or no restrictions with the sleeve so for that reason am leaning more towards bypass so I don't have to go through another surgery in the future. hopefully someone can offer some advice on how to help so you don't have to go through another surgery.
  8. Hello all, This is my first post I just found this app. I have been on a program at my local bariatric center since August of 2013. My insurance required I see a therapist, a nutrionalist, 12 months of weigh-ins and to lose 10% of my body weight. I started out at my top weight of 523...started the program at 511. I now weigh 425 at the end of the year program. I got my letter of approval in the mail a few days ago for the gastric sleeve. Im very excited and nervous. I have learned a lot over the last year but still have a lot of questions everyday that pop in my head. Very glad to have found this forum. My surgery date is November 10th , pre-op is on Nov. 6th. I have been married to 12 years to my beautiful supportive wife and have 4 wonderful children. Im so excited for my new life and getting this weight off. Thanks for reading Alan
  9. I will tell you that this is exactly how I felt about my surgery. (gastric bypass) Mine was Dec. 18th. I really thought I was going to die during surgery. I have had many surgeries, so I have no idea why I thought this one was different. But I am going to be totally honest, it wasn't that bad. I was up walking the same day as well. That is the key to get up and walk out the gases. Those are what is uncomfortable. But it is life changing, and I thought I would just die without food during Christmas. I didn't. Yes, it was emotional hunger watching everyone eat and all the commercials, but never was I hungry. It is so worth it. I love how I feel. And it does get easier with everyday that goes by. You all can do this. And help is always here. Good luck!!!
  10. Looking for information on whether or not the lap band is the right choice for me. I don't want gastric bypass. I am currently 192-195 and 4 feet 11 inches tall. I am in excellent health. What can I expect to lose and what is life like after the band procedure? Lots of questions I know, but I am truly a real newbie where this is concerned. Thank you so much.
  11. Hi, this my first time sharing on the forum. My surgery date is November 20th although I'm trying to get that date pushed up so that I can be at least mobile for the holidays. I was so excited when I made the decision to have the RNY surgery, now that excitement is mixed with anxiety and fear. I know that I wouldn't turn back but I do need the support.

Why did you choose vsg over other wls?

I feel so similar! After all my research, I just KNEW the sleeve was right for me. Am I a little scared about the acid reflux being worse? Yes I am, but not as scared as the possible side effects from gastric bypass. I may not be your average wls recipient either. I have a high tolerance for pain, my surgeon could not believe what my X-ray looked like of my band that I had been living like that for years. I just thought well, this is how its suppose to be!
  13. Hi all! I'm new to this site and trying to figure things out.. Not sure if its the site or my phone but it doesn't want to update my profile or picture... Anyways.. I'm scheduled for surgery on November 10th... Anyone else scheduled around this time? I need some support and people who are experiencing the same/similar things I am! I'm beyond scared to have the surgery... I have never in my life had a surgery or heck even a stitch! I sometimes want to back out or find myself talking myself out of the surgery.. I hope I'm not the only one! I see a lot of people excited for their surgery and don't get me wrong, I'm excited but more scared. Well, looking forward to meeting new people and going through this journey with someone who understands or can relate.
  14. Welcome to the "other" side. I was banded November 2, and it hasn't really sunk in yet because I haven't had a fill. HUGS
  15. Hi everyone I was finally able to figure out how to post on here. Well I will be having a lap band to gastric bypass revision on 12-12-12. Im really excited but nervous because this time I will be having a drainage bulb/tube left in and a catheter left in after surgery.. im not nervous about the actual procedure im very luck to have Dr. Higa from Fresno doing the revision and hes the best there is at what he does. Cant wait for my new life to start.
  16. I'm in process of getting approval and trying to decide which one. Would love to hear feedback on why you chose bypass. Thanks.
  17. My surgeon backed out last minute doing all and any gastric surgeries and now I'm in the market for a new one... Thank goodness I found one that accepted my insurance and I had all the pre-requisite testing done before hand... But now my biggest decision is to have either the bypass or the sleeve... My biggest fear is that the decision that I do think I do not want to fail my weight-loss goals now and in the future... Can anyone out there give me some of their experiences with both the bypass or sleeve???

    Changing My Attitude

Yes Lisavz, that's the spirit!!! I tend to find myself comparing myself to my neighbor who had her surgery in November and was hospitalized twice for dehydration and her incision rupturing before she finally got it all under control and began to lose weight. She's lost 75 lbs but she does not work out because she says she's too busy. She went through way more than I did to get to where she is now. I just want to be positive and share my story here with everyone. Hopefully I will inspire someone or encourage someone to give it their all and make this awesome change in their life. God bless you and all the best as you begin your WLS journey !!!
  19. I have struggled for many years with the Gastric Bypass Surgery. Should I get it? Should I not get it? Should I just try another diet and fail? Being over weight has been a constant companion my entire life. As I grew up I would weigh myself thinking ok I weigh 160 lbs., I won't ever reach 165, if I reach 165, then I will work out more and watch what I eat. Next thing I knew I was 170, so I would play the compromise game once again. OK 180, I promise myself I will never reach 180, I just won't allow it... Well after several deals that I could not even keep with myself I am now 260 pounds. I am miserable, my back and knees hurt constantly! My entire family is obese and I just figured that was the cards that I had drawn in life and so that is what I will have to deal with. I have done a lot of research regarding the many types of surgery out there and have decded for myself that the Gastric Sleeve is the best match for me. I am excited to get things started and will be going to a Seminar tonight. My first appointment is on January 29th where I will meet with my doctor. I know that this is not a fast process and have read several other posts stating just that, so I am not in a real big hurry to get the surgery, but I am in a hurry to feel better physically and emotionally about myself. I don't blame anyone for the size I am or the reason how I got this way.
  20. that is so true about complications, my mom had gastric bypass twice! I think that any and every diet works! It just depends on what works for you.
  21. I was in the same boat as you. So many tried to push me to get Bypass, but I decided what was best for me and got the Lap Band. I think the most important thing to remember is that it is YOUR decision and that the Lap Band isn't a fix all. It's a tool to help us achieve what all of us have struggled so long with, to lose weight. My Nut put it best I think. She said that I had to make the choice of using this tool to my advantage, or letting the tool use me. I can tell you from the other side, I am 1 week post-op, that I am so happy with my decision and would make the same one again and again. Good Luck!
  22. the surgery itself is not bad, the only time i got sick was waking up the next morning (from anesthesia), but NO pain. good doctor... Dr. Ortiz I dropped 30 pounds within a month and haven't lost a pound since. I haven't felt restriction lately - and i'm starting to wonder if i busted a stitch or something... It has only been like 2 months for me so i guess if i keep losing ill be glad i did it, but if i don't lose anything else it will be the biggest $$$ mistake of my life!!! Highest weight 252 (November 2010) Surgery weight 234 (April 20 2011) Plication w. Dr. Ortiz Current weight 204 (June 17, 2011) nice to meet you guys! kim
  23. you so crazy I use to tell people I didn't want to do zumba because I'm afraid I might shake the mirrors off the wall. trust me is fun to do because I was doing it before the gastric bypass and no matter what size you are everybody in that class sweats
