I do MMA, so both BJJ and boxing/kickboxing. I was concerned about missing practice, so it was a major question before surgery about how long I had to be out. My doctor cleared me for 5-6 weeks post-op and last week at my 2 week follow-up he said going back in 5 weeks was fine. I was also concerned about getting hit in the stomach and he said that the chance for injury is the same as it was before. By 5 weeks our stomachs have healed to a point that a little normal trauma (like a nice punch to the gut) won't hurt us anymore than it would have in the past. If you want to start slow, do a few bag rounds until you're comfortable. I notice now at three weeks that when I pivot, I can still feel a little bit of a pulling near my biggest scar, so I assume that if I give it the full 5 weeks, there shouldn't be any issues by then. I don't plan to hop into sparring my first day back though, so take it at a pace you're comfortable with.

Hi I am 2 weeks post op and I am walking 2 miles but afterwards I am so exhausted. So today I only walked 35 minutes instead of 48 and I am still totally exhausted. My Dr. said to walk 1/2 hour in the a.m and 1/2 hour in the p.m. Does anyone else have this issue with energy?

I have first appointment next week! I have so many questions! What did the band feel like when you first woke up after surgery? I am afraid of choking! I don't wanna be lightheaded all the time.

Newbie here, sx on 3/31/10!
rago5069 replied to AllieKat's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck tomorrow Allie! I was banded on 3-9-10 and can understand your excitment as well as being nervous. The surgery was a piece of cake for me. However I had awful gas for the 3-4 days following surgery. Make sure you get up and walk around to get rid of the gas. It really does help. If this is any comfort... today I can't even tell that I have been banded except for that fact that I get full faster. Here it is 3 weeks post op and I am exercising and feeling great! -
Hi! I'm 3 three weeks post op and have noticed that I go to sleep tired and wake up tired... I'm on thyroid medication dr is keeping it at the same dose from before surgery, was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this a well?

Brand New here... A few questions before surgery!
lakrystashayshay posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everybody! First post on these forums, but I have been reading them for weeks in preparation for gastric sleeve surgery. I have just finished all of the pre-op requirements for my surgery team and had my last appointment with them. They are sending in my information to my insurance today for approval! Reading through these forums has been super helpful the last few weeks to make me feel more confident in this decision and has given me information I didn't even think to ask about, but I have a few questions with my surgery date potentially about to be set (the team is confident if/when insurance approves, we can get my surgery in early-mid January! 😊) : 1) For those that have BCBS insurance, how long did it take for them to approve your surgery? I realize it is Christmas week this week, so it may take them a little longer, but don't want to stress myself out thinking I did something wrong if it takes a while, so I'd like to have an estimate of how long this normally takes. 2) For those that have done a gastric sleeve, how long was it before you could lift weights again? I know they are going to want me to walk/cardio ~5 days a week pretty quick after surgery, which I already do, but I actually really enjoy lifting 2-4 times a week depending on the week, so I am curious when you were able to get back to lifting weights or start lifting after you had the surgery? 3) This one is a little more out there, but has anyone that has had this surgery (or others) been allergic to the anesthesia medicine? That is my biggest worry as I have had no previous surgeries before, but am allergic to or have mild-moderate reactions to a lot of medicine and I never know until I take it (Allegra, Aleve, both weight loss meds they tried me on before agreeing I could look at surgery to name a few of the worst ones...) My theory is the hospital would be the best place to have an allergic reaction, and my surgeon team knows of my other allergies and will be able to fix it if something does happen, but I was curious if anyone else had had this worry and gotten through surgery just fine? Just some nerves because med reactions are never fun. 😕 Thanks in advance for any help! -
Not only do I have the lap band but I work in surgery and see patients all the time have this procedure done. I have run across old and new threads about all three being months post op. Well here is the thing and I hate when people get frantic because they dont know what is wrong and want to take their band out or get the by pass done just sayin. I am 10 months post op. I often had and have shoulder pain but shoulder pain comes from over eating. Everyone has a nerve in their stomach that runs from the stomach to the shoulder when you have over eaten and the band presses on that nerve you will have pain. If you are havng this problem then whatever you are eating cut it in half. You also might have inflammation in your stomach so give it a rest of 72 hours. Go back to the diet you had when you came home from the hospital and start over. For gas and bloating my culprit was cinnamon in my coffee and spices and talking while eating, chewing gum, after I stopped all that the gas and bloating stopped. Also start drinking some probiotics dan active, eating activia yogurt, and use gas x until the symptoms stop. You probably are going back to your old eating ways at some point and you just cant. We have to stay on the diet, follow the diet or else you start having side affects you didnt have before. But dont talk about taking out your band until you have tried what you were doing before all that started. Hope it helps I really do.

i had some in my band at surgery but when they did the gi test after surgery i couldnt even take a sip it was to tight so they took all mine out and i dont have any i was banded on oct 5th i still dont but your stomach will stay swollen for awhile so i still have restriction just from swelling i lost 18 pounds after surgery the first week :w00t: -
I was having potato soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes and farina Cereal by the end of the first week. Not very much at a time, but enough to make me feel better. I mainly followed the Cornell University guidelines. http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.org/pdf/dietary_guidelines_sleeve_gastrectomy.pdf Everyone is different. I certainly wouldn't over do it or add anything too substantial. Listen to your body and act accordingly.

The more weight you have to lose, the faster you will lose. You can't compare your loss to others, because everyone is different. I was 195 and now am 130. I only had 55 lbs. to lose but it was all in my abdomen and heading towards my heart. I had to have a two hour repair before he did my sleeve because 1/3 of my stomach had protruded through my diaphragm and was lodged between my lungs. I am 5' 4" and 62 years old. My surgery was 12/14/11. I have gone from a size 18 jeans to a size 4. If you are in a stall, try LilMissDivas Boot camp on here. There is no way you are not going to lose if your stomach is so tiny and you are not hardly consuming any calories. You will lose! Try focusing on measurements and see how many inches you have lost, but don't get discouraged. You will succeed.

I have but I did not have alot of weight to lose. My goal was only 65 lbs and I lost it by 9 months.. I will be 10 months next week. The more weight you have to lose, the faster you will lose.

How Long til Back to Work?
jtickle replied to carolk36's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon says normally people take off two weeks, but it also depends on how physically demanding your job is. -
Did anyone have to take Atenolol pre-op? It is a beta-blocker. They told me to take it one week pre-op which I started yesterday but I am not sure why I am taking it. I am putting a call into the office today.

Beachcomber3 replied to Beachcomber3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I had to start taking it one week pre-op and on the day of surgery as well as post-op. I called and spoke to the nurse and she said it was because I have a history of hypertension. When is your surgery? -

I fell off the liquid wagon...
flowers replied to ladyinred66's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I read here on another thread that it actually takes 6 weeks to shrink your liver. The point of the liquid diet is to make your fatty liver less slimy so it can be pushed aside easier. Thats why for higher BMIs you do the pre opt, but for BMIs below 40, they dont require it. The poster is the one who wrote the thread about how to shop for a Mexican doctor and seemed to know her stuff. -
Having a hard time....
Elode replied to TieraLeone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The stages are a lot of trial and error. I know when I Was going through the stages one day I would LOVE something say yogurt, and the next day the thought of it made me want to puke and I couldn't eat it. If your stomach isn't handling certain foods it's ok to back track a little and stay with something you can handle then try again later and you may end up with a different result. I am over 6 weeks out and some days I can eat good and others I just Want my shakes and little food. Eventually it will all even out just makes sure your getting in your fluids, protein, and vitamins! Take your time with the foods. Are you taking b vitamins to help with energy? -
I slept on my side as soon as I got home from hospital which was day 4, but I had a pillow that I had to prob my belly on so that it didn't feel like anything was pulling. I'm 2.5 weeks out now and I still have my pillow handy.

Sounds like you're speaking from experience Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I had the smallest sip of communion wine without thinking at like week 4 or 6 or something and it felt terrible. And that is diluted. I can't even imagine what Vodka would feel like. I dumped one time, not alcohol related and it was the worst feeling in the world for hours. It was like an after-school special.

Shin splints. I was in the same boot back in 2003, when I first decided to start walking. I began by walking a few hundred feet, but within six months I was walking for two or three hours a day through the farm fields and trails in the nearby woods. I never thought I could do it when I started... and I remember the sore shins! That will clear up with time, and you will find your stamina will increase with each passing day. It is good to have a walking partner. My last lab loved to walk, and she would throw a fit until I got her leash for her daily jaunt.

Band to sleeve conversion 9/12. I know this is a silly question and was probably a topic in the past. I have a wedding this weekend with a reception party after. I am planing on bringing my Water and will also bring a Protein shake since I'm still on all liquids for the next couple of weeks. I know everyone will be drinking and having fun which is completely fine. My question is I wonder if it would be completely crazy to have a single vodka tonic. Has anyone had a drink this early post op and if so, how was it? My fear is a tummy that feels like it's on fire. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
