  1. Great post, thank you. I finished all the tests and the last thing I need to do is the pre-op testing which includes, blood work, urine test (for nicotine), chest xray and ekg. Now I'm wondering if I'll be going through an anesthesia evaluation as well as I was determined to have mild sleep apnea (no cpap yet). Thanks again, I'll give the nurse a call. For those who haven't started their hoops... I had to go though ekg stress test with a bicycle, as well as the nuclear stress test with imaging, echo, respiratory testing/pulmonary function, cardiac clearance appointment, sleep apnea test, two nutrition classes, and the dreaded endoscopy. All of them were alright, nothing too painful but some were annoying. The hardest were the stress test on the bicycle lol, and the endoscopy left my throat feeling sore (and a week or so of acid relux which I didn't have before). The nuclear stress test was a breeze. I prefer that over the bike/treadmill stress test. P.S. Having a band to sleeve revision, after years of the band.

    Bile reflux

Hello, I had a sleeve gastrectomy in 2016. Recently I had an endoscopy due to swallowing issues (I have multiple sclerosis). The biopsy of my stomach came back with changes and i had mild damage in my distal esophagus. I do not have a GI and have not been being followed by the bariatric center for several years. I have an appointment to see my bariatric surgeon as it seems that the recourse for bile reflux is a revision. Has anyone else dealt with anything like this?

List of Band to Bypass Patients

Thanks, pebulz! The doctor said the revision from the band to the RNY is a higher risk and would cost more, but didn't go into anymore details. I hadn't put to much thought into the idea of there being a higher risk. I'll have to get more information when I visit with him. I need to make a list if questions about the risks of band revision to a RNY so I can be better prepared next time.
  5. Was looking to see if their is a list anywhere of who is band to bypass and how long its been since they had the revision

    Rny vs sleeve

My doctor is the one that suggested the sleeve would be better for me. I was also worried with the malabsorption with the bypass. I had reflux before surgery but not that bad, so I took a chance with the sleeve. I have a friend that had to get the revision because of the reflux. So far, I'm happy with what I've had. And just like you, I had heard a lot of horror stories with the lap band. I have a friend from high school that got it and she lost a good amount of weight, but she doesn't have the restriction and eats EVERYTHING and sometimes she'll get sick, but she's gained a lot back. I know that these are all just tools and we still have to do our work.
  7. So sorry to hear your family didn't support the band to sleeve revision. Maybe with some time and education about it all, they will support it. I would ask my parents and spouse to go talk to your surgeon. With all of the issues you are having with the band, you really should get it taken out. My surgeon told me I needed to take my band out or I would eventually end up in the ER having serious complications. Had my band removed 08/2015 and the sleeve done 01/2016. I've lost 42 pounds so far and I feel so much better since I had the band removed. Good luck!
  8. Hey there, I was banded in 2001 and revised in 2015. I did not have a slip but after a series of fills and unfills I developed a hernia, esophagitis, gastritis, severe left shoulder pain, and a myriad of other band related issues. I felt like crap, developed really bad eating habits including a sweet tooth I did not have before, all because of the band. I was unfilled for three years prior to my revision and regained all my weight. I feel great now that I have revised and am down the weight I regained. Just a few pounds to go to my lowest after banding. I have no regrets about my revision. The recovery was a little rough for me because of how long I had the band and the hernia repair and because I did not take any pain meds after discharge, but it has been worth it. Read through the revision boards. There are lots of us on here who have revised and some long term revisions that have done great. Best of luck and feel free to ask any questions.
  9. Dr Ponce TJ $5500.00 VSG $6000.00 revision
  10. Hi - I've been reading here for a very long time, but this is my first post. I am in a desperate situation with my VSG and need some advice. Back story: I had a lap band placed in 2006 and was very sick with it for a long time. I met with my surgeon last September and we decided to revise to a VSG. I did the six month supervised diet and everything for insurance. Revision was scheduled for April 19, 2016; in the recovery room he tells me that he could not revise to VSG because I had far too much inflamed scar tissue and that we need to wait four months for it to calm down and revise then. OK. So - VSG scheduled for 8/15; all is well. Office called today and asked to move my surgery to tomorrow morning; I am slated to check into the hospital at 9am. The surgeon called me shortly after I agreed to tell me that there is only a fifty percent chance that he will be successful with the VSG procedure due my scar tissue. I told him to go for it anyway and that I trust him. I am 46. I was 257 at my highest and am now at 190; my goal is 130. I have lost and gained HUNDREDS of pounds over and over and over for the entirety of my adult life and was hopeful the sleeve would help me end this cycle and maintain a sensible weight. So - do I go forward with the surgery tomorrow and hope I'm in the positive fifty percent and that it is successful? Do I give it up and try once again to forge out a thinner life on my own? I'm very stressed and need advice. Thanks!

    How long is the procedure?

Mine was over 2 hours long. I was a band-to-sleeve revision plus hiatal hernia repair.

Serious Question. How is WLS the "wrong way"?

So, I think WLS is a very good choice, but I do still cringe a bit at the very young, and even more so, the not very overweight. I get they have their reasons, but I sometimes feel that the serious nature of this business is not well understood. I am not talking about the direct surgical risk - I mean the unknowns of altering your body for a lifetime. For me, it was that or die young. If one of my sons (who are not obese, but one of them is slightly overweight) decided to do it, i would have a very strong opinion against it for them. Young people have metabolism on their side and genuinely believe that if anyone can make without surgery it is young people, particularly lower BMI. They are a good audeince for the "lifestyle" type programs like 20/20 that work on changing your healthy habits wholeistcally. I knew it was bad when the 2 year program i reached out to wouldn't take my money. Told me I didn't have a prayer without surgery- I was too obese for too long - my body had been changed by the obesity. Their honesty was one of the kicks in the gut I needed to revise from my failed band to the sleeve.
  13. TAYFUSION304 I agree with you I dont want any revision. Im leaning toward the bypass, now after talking to the surgeon. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

    Nervous about revision

You've been through a lot, so I'm happy to hear that your revision has been approved. I'm sure the journey will be easier this time around. Best of luck and congrats!

    All happening so quickly!

Have you checked out other options? I see so many band revisions it scared me away from it! Just make sure you do plenty of research (not just with the center doing your band.) and good luck!!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Weight lost question

Your weight loss depends on a lot of factors including your pre-op weight. The less you have to lose the slower the weight will come off. Also, you had a revision and revisions tend to lose slower. That doesn't mean it's not going to come off, it'll just likely come off a lot slower than you would like. Also, you may still have some fluid from your surgery. From my own experience it took about 10 days to get rid of that fluid so give yourself a few more days and I'm sure you'll drop a few more pounds. Congrats on your new surgery and I wish you the best!

    Is this normal???

Aside from the nutritional changes, the trauma of surgery also affects hormones, and emotions. I've also read something about fat "holding" hormones, so the actual fatloss, will affect hormones and emotions. That's part of the reason why overweight women have trouble conceiving. Hillmama, I hope you will continue to feel better as you heal. I'm curious, about what kind of surgery revision you had? I've never heard of concentric pouch dilitation before. Did they give you a new band?
  19. I'm in NE Ohio now...but lived in Western PA when I had my sleeve surgery in 2012. Now I'm starting the process of looking into revision to bypass surgery in Akron. Sent from my XT1058 using the BariatricPal App

    Rny vs sleeve

I am RNY for several reasons, severe reflux, HBP, sleep apnea, severe arthritis since 25, and I wanted the quickest way to lose weight. I decided the RNY would work best for me, did not want to throw away 3/4 of my stomach, so I have a turkey-egg stomach instead of one some have described a banana but my search leads me to believe a garden hose just wouldn't do me. My surgeon didn't even ask or sway my thinking. When I announced I wanted a bypass he said I was making a wise choice. Would he have tried talking me into a sleeve, doubt it, at 72 I didn't feel I had enough Life Time to revise later, so since I wanted the Gold Medal surgery, I chose the best, if they were issued medals he would wear a Big Gold one. Chief of Baraiatric Surgery and Metabolic Weight loss, full professor in College of Medicine, trained many now-successful Bariatric surgeon's in the MidWest and God only knows where else. But he also is a very nice person. My son and I are very close, my middle child, his older brother died at 31 suddenly in 2008, my Husband died 4th of July 6 years ago. So we still live together, I go to his appointments, he comes to mine. We always band together. Well at my presurgery meeting with my Dr Needleman, he did something that impressed me greatly. He came over, shook my son's hand said " I promise to take very good care of your Mother" he was sensitive to enough to reassure my 👦. And he has treated me wonderful. If I had become a doctor, which had always been my dream, I would have been happy to be even an 1/8th as good, as he was and is. And the blip in recovery I am experiencing? Couldn't have been, planned for but they know how to repair it. And I believe in them, and. that helps.
  21. I see people who weigh less than 200 lbs. and get the sleeve or they start with the band and revise over to sleeve well below 200 lbs. I'm surprised a surgeon would do this or insurance would approve it.
  22. Has anyone had a sleeve to bypass revision? I have reflux really bad and am told that will help. I had surgery done 3.5 years ago, unfortunately in the last 6 months I have also started gaining weight. Can I expect to lose weight if I do this? Also trying to figure out how to get insurance to pay as it is to relieve the reflux, weight loss is secondary.
  23. Have you already had your band removed, or are they doing the removal and revision at the same time? I am having my band removed and sleeve revision in one surgery (that's the plan anyway!) Aiming for the end of July! Good luck!! Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App I had my band removed in 2013! I had a terrible slip and was very very sick! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  24. If I were starting over, I think I would choose the gastric sleeve. It has a quicker weight loss than the band, but without the malabsortive issues of bypass and it has less followup requirements than the band. But let me tell you my history and you decide what is best for you. I just got my second band put in 7 days ago (the first had a leak and my insurance, after much discussion, would only pay to replace what I had - a band) If I wanted to switch to a sleeve as recommended by my MD, I would have to self pay. That said, I understand that some insurance companies are beginning to pay for revision surgery on bands to sleeves or bypass, so check and see what your insurance company will cover down the road. I feel great just a week after surgery and I feel restriction for the first time and I am determined to make this work. I had been successful with my first band by losing 80# before regaining 30# over the last year. I am determined to get a net weight loss of 100#. Check back in in six months and see if I have made it yet. Attitude goes a long way!
