Toward the end of each RNYTalk.com newsletter, we’ll be suggesting a Bypass Challenge for you to try before the next newsletter comes out. It’s a non-competitive challenge, and it’s a chance to do something new and healthy while putting yourself to the test. The Bypass challenge is just what it sounds like. We suggest a challenge for you to do over the next couple of weeks. Pretty much anything is fair play as long as it helps you or someone else get healthier. We may ask you to try a new food, change up your exercise routine or lend someone a helping hand. There’s no pass-fail on this, and we encourage you to try again and again until you are confident that you’ve met the challenge. Current Challenge: New Recipe! Within the next two weeks, your challenge is to try a new recipe that you have never tried before. It needs to be healthy, of course, and fit into your meal plan. A good way to start is to look at our Recipe forum or you can search online for recipes, try a new ingredient or use a different combination of spices. Good luck, and tell us how it goes by posting a reply to this topic! The forum is a good place to help out anyone else who needs ideas for a new recipe.

Revision from Sleeve to Bypass...
missmachine posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello all, I had the VSG done a little over a year ago (June 2012). After 5 months post-op, I have not lost any weight and even gained 10 lbs back. I decided to look into getting a revision to either the RNY or the DS. My insurance approved revision to the RNY because I also have severe acid reflux. I weigh 185 and my BMI is currently approx 33. I was wondering if anyone revised from the sleeve to bypass, and if you could share what your experience was like? Did you lose the rest of your weight? What should my expectations be? I have heard of so many people who do not lose weight with the RNY. I know that surgery is a tool and it is up to me to utilize that tool properly. I admit that I have messed up a lot with the sleeve. I became unmotivated when I stopped losing weight. I don't know how much of this was my fault, but I have felt like I failed my sleeve. I really think that this is what I need to do to get focused again. Being much closer to my goal this time helps as well, I just don't know how effective having another surgery will be. I am looking for some positive and/or honest thoughts and advice about this decision. Thank you! =) -
HELP & ADVICE - SHOULD I DO THE REVISION?
dvons replied to mecub71's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Long time bander here. I didn't have a hard time with it and lost a significant amount of weight. I did PB a lot and my esophagus had issues off and on. I stalled at 100 lb weight loss and am now going to have the revision. I was told the sleeve will help me continue my journey till I hit goal weight with far less side effects. Hope this helps. -
Lap Band Removal, Supervised Diet, And Gastric Bypass Rny All In The Next 4 Months
StartingOver posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had lapband surgery in March of 2004 and now am exploring the idea of a revision to gastric bypass surgery. I have been very fortunate not to have any complications from the band, I just haven't used it the way it was meant and since I'm so far into the game the chances of me losing more weight are very slim. I just discovered that my health insurance plan will exclude bariatric surgery beginning April 1, 2012. so, on a whim I decided to attend a surgical weight loss seminar sponsored by the healthcare system that I work for. The surgeon seems optimistic that he can remove the band, get my 3 month medically supervised diet complete, and get an authorization from my insurance for the gastric bypass surgery. I'm interested in hearing about everyone's experience with RNY surgery, whether you started off banded, or not. I'm also looking for a community of support and ideas. I haven't been an active participant of a weight loss forum for quite a while, so I'm excited to be back and to make some new friends. -
Lap Band Removal, Supervised Diet, And Gastric Bypass Rny All In The Next 4 Months
jen_g replied to StartingOver's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm starting over too after I failed with the band. I had the surgery in February 2010. By September 2010, I had a port revision because it flipped & was inaccessible. Acid reflux became a real issue, I had continuous port pain, pain in the chest. I gained back what I lost. I now have a hiatal hernia & Barrett's esophagus (you won't know you have it unless you get an actual endoscopy). I fought with the insurance about my choice of surgeon (nearer to home) and finally was so desperate I posted my story on their Facebook. I was contacted right away by the insurance company & now I'm approved for removal of the band & RNY. The band wasn't as safe as I thought. Barrett's esophagus can become esophageal cancer. The RNY will actually inhibit the Barrett's from progressing. I hope to have a surgery date in the next 1-2 months. The last 2 years have been traumatic, but it makes me that much more determined to succeed with the bypass. Anyone else out there come to find they developed Barrett's & having the revision to RNY? I'm new to this forum, but after my failure at the band--I know support groups and forums are part of my plan this time around. -
Extra Nervous After Word of Warning from my US Surgeon!
Sun Godess posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
So...I have a lap band. I never got to the "green zone" or optimal restriction, just increased unbearable heartburn with additional fills. I have insurance, and kind of fell into the revision process this December. My insurance requires the repeat of the 6 mos diet process again to submit for a revision to sleeve. I do not want to wait and take the chance of ultimately being denied. So, I have scheduled a revision with Dr. Illan in a few weeks. Everything is all set up. I told my lap band surgeon a couple weeks ago at my last appt. He seemed concerned but understood. This morning I got a personal call from my lap band surgeon. He said his partner was in surgery as we spoke trying to fix a leak from a patient who had a sleeve done in Mexico. He said he was not trying to scare me, because he understands that I have to do what I have to do. He was just warning me that they see this regularly. He did not know the doctor or anything. So, I feel that I have done a good job, but am worrying now about the what if's due to it being a "revision" surgery of lap band to sleeve, and the possibility of a leak. It is scaring me now, and whether they REALLY REALLY REALLY check thoroughly before closing you up! I know they do leak tests during and after, but then how does someone get home and then have a leak!?!?! He did say, yes, it can happen to anybody. I am just wondering, scared and slightly second guessing. I can't afford to get back home and have complications and be in the hospital! I have found one band to sleeve patient on here who went to Dr. Illan. I have heard all glowing reviews. I have phone conferenced with Dr. Illan and feel good. I don't want fear to hold me back. I don't want to wait until July/August to hope to have surgery and maybe be denied because there "technically" is no mechanical error with my band. I am ready to move on and find success NOW beginning of April, be several pounds down by summer, all healed up, and moving on with my life...not to mention over this heartburn! Any words of wisdom and experience...especially of band to sleeve revisions would be greatly appreciated! -
Extra Nervous After Word of Warning from my US Surgeon!
NoMoBand replied to Sun Godess's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Sun Godess, As others have said complications occur even with the most qualified doctors. IMO, I would be more concerned with your heartburn issue and what this new doctor has to say about it. It is my understanding that heartburn can worsen with the sleeve if you already have it with the band. I was revised from band to sleeve and never knew what GERD was until now, which is another chance we take. I take Prilosec which is a PPI drug to control my heartburn and as you probably already know, there are concerns with long term use of PPI's. Just some things to discuss with him if you have not already done so. jake -
Anyone else at 30 BMI when they were sleeved? (Revision)
Screwballski posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Is there anyone out there that got sleeved with a relatively low BMI? I’d dropped to exactly 30 the morning of surgery. Had it been lower it would have been called off. Can I expect to loose my weight as quickly as others, given complete compliance (which I have maintained to the letter), or will it take me longer because I have less to lose. Has anyone else been through this? SW 180 CW 171 (14 days post op) GW 140 -
My revision was one in 2 surgeries too. That's the only way my doctor will do it now. He used to do it in one surgery, but he said the chances of a leak are a lot higher (but like you said, still low) with one surgery. I had my band out in March but because of some other things that came up am just having sleeve surgery tomorrow. I hope that by waiting 5 months my stomach will be well healed and that I'll get a nice tight little sleeve.

Band slippage - sick - surgery next week
meggs353 replied to newlife082318's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Good luck with the decision! It's not an easy one. Perhaps ask your dr to walk you through the pros and cons of each. It's impossible to predict the future, so we can't know how you will do with another band, or with the sleeve. It's just about working with your healthcare team to determine what is best for you based on the information you currently have. Neither the band nor the sleeve is perfect. If you decide not to have either though, then it's back to dieting the old fashioned way, which failed many of us. There is a specific forum for lap-band to sleeve revisions and you might be able to get some insight there as to what was good and bad for people who had that experience: http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/394-band-to-gastric-sleeve-revisions/ Good luck! -
Any suggested surgeons for BA/LIFT in Mexico?
AZDee replied to HeatherSchwartz's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
There are a lot of factors involved when picking a surgeon and I for one feel the incisions and sewing to be one of the most major factors. And yes I do feel I made the best decision. But I do have to concede that Dr Gutierrez does not operate on patients that are not at their desired goal weight, so that alone has a big impact on the final outcome. I liked Dr. Saucede, I had even paid my fee for the Las Vegas consult, before deciding to go with Dr G. The main reason I chose Dr G. is I found out 3 out of 5 of his surgeries are revisions from other PS's work. I need revisions from my previous work last year and Dr Saucede said he would do them but could not guarantee the outcome. I do believe Dr Sacede's outcomes are subject to the patients before's as he works on patients what tend to have intermediate surgeries along the way. Also I thought I should add this, just in case it was misleading the center I had originally planned on going too before learning of either of these two doctors was CosMed, which I can not recommend... -
Sorry typing on tablet. I had bilateral knee replacement that summer. I gain back up to 240lb by the time of my revision last summer. My. Band had caused major problems with my esophagus, so I didn't have to wait to get removed. I am now fluctuating between 195lbs and 200lbs and my goal weight is 170lb. Ideal weight 150lb. Weight loss has been very slow, but I work 2nd shift and don't workout as often as I need to. Good luck

Yet Another Naysayer, Grrr!
Kimba Maria Wiggins posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had another person tell me I shouldn't get surgery because I'll die...my stomach will burst and that I should get the Lap Band (which has been proven to cause serious health issues). Someone she knew passed from getting gastric bypass and that I should get another procedure, which Medicaid doesn't cover. Nope! Will get sleeved regardless of what anyone says. This is the umpteenth time someone has come at me like this. And this "friend" doesn't realize that I'm one step away from being done with the pre-surgery process (2nd cardiac clearance since I didn't pass the first one0 I knew this would happen. Once again, a Negative Nellie attempting to steer me away from my goal. -
Was told by my nurse that all my levels were excellent! Including my Protein level, she said it was pretty close to what they expect in non-bypass people. She also told me that my B7 Biotin level was really high and if I was taking a supplement for it, to stop. I have no idea what would cause it to be high, is that bad, good? Anyone know? I hate asking my nurse questions, half the time she doesn't know anything and I didn't want to bug the surgeon with a phone call about it, I'd wait til my next apt with him. I'll be seeing him next month for a day surgery and my 6th month post op in October.

Lap Band issue and possible revision
JustFluffy replied to Paultx's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band placed in April 2008. I lost a little over 60 pounds in the first six months. I had to have port revision because my port had flipped after surgery, but once corrected I had no other issues the first year. The honeymoon phase was wonderful! In the next two years, I ended up with acid reflux and esophagus issues, port complications, weight regain (and then some). I moved and had to find a new "band doctor", which by the way isn't an easy task. We were only able to do one fill due to my port being so deep and found out later stitched to my rib under my left breast (long story). I had RNY revision in August of this year. I'm down 49 pounds since surgery. I did my research and knew there would be higher risks with a revision surgery. RNY (like the band), isn't a cure to weight loss. It too is a tool. The first 18 months you are almost guaranteed to lose weight, due to re-routing and malabsorption. After that time hopefull we have learned to eat right and have a new lifestyle. It is usually after that time period if we go back to our old habits, we will probably regain the weight. It has its pros and cons...but for me it has been worth it. I'm not in pain anymore, I don't nor can I "eat around it", I don't get the elepant on my chest feeling like I did with the band with almost every meal...it doesn't allow you to cheat! Vitamins and supplements are a must the rest of your life. I was on my way to an early grave - even with the band. I regained all weight I'd lost with the band, plus twenty pounds - on top of that my esophagus had all but stopped working. Reflux was horrible (with reflux I should never have been banded - big no no). I was literally in the worse shape of my life three months ago. I can say since then I've had some tough moments. I mean, the surgery was a b***h to recover from...not a picnic - was tough but worth it :-) Do your research, go in with your eyes wide open and adopt a glass is half empty regarding research...I think you should always prepare for the worse and hope for the best! -
Why did YOU get lap banded?
Cathy S. replied to Dreamjeans's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in the 6 month pre-op program as well. I have been overweight for the last 16 years, since my last child was born. At various times throughout the last 16 years I thought about gastric bypass and lap band surgery, but the possible side effects and after effects scared me too much. Earlier this year I was transferred to a new position within my department (law enforcement). This position is exciting and definitely a career advancement, but does require standing for hours on end at scenes. I came to the realization that I could not physically do that, and that basically snapped me out of my denial. I am obese. I am not a big girl, or big boned, or heavy. I am obese. I investigated and researched gastric bypass and lap band and decided that lap band was the right choice for me. In fact, once I had decided, I was so excited that I wanted to cry when I found out that I'd have to go through a 6 month supervised program first! It's a good thing though, I think it helps prepare you and get you in the mindset that you need to be in to make the band work. Mostly, I want to stop feeling crappy: all the aches and pains because of my weight. (Throw in a ballistic vest and duty belt and it just makes it worse.) The fatigue at the end of my work week because of lugging all this weight around. I want to do it while I'm still relatively young enough to enjoy it. While overweight I have always felt "less than" around anyone smaller than me. My accomplishments or talents didn't matter, I automatically felt inferior because I was fat. I am not "less than"! On this journey of a thousand miles, I have taken the first steps to regain the "me" that feels trapped in this body. -
Why did YOU get lap banded?
Jachut replied to Dreamjeans's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was aware of the possiblity of slip and erosion but not of the major pain in the ass the band could be if your body does not like having a band in it! However, here, the possibility of a resurgery is not that bad - you dont want surgery again, but it will be paid for, no problems. I dont have insurance problems etc to worry about. If I need surgery I get it. I was entirely aware that the band probably wont last in my body until the end of my days, if it wears out, I'll just get another one but if I get 20 years out of it, well, I'll be over 60. I'm not sure I'd bother. I think after over 20 years of healthy eating and exercise, enough of the habits have a chance of sticking, my body will be USED to being light, not heavy and my family on my dad's side all tend to get alarmingly thin in old age, and I have the general body shape of that side of the family, I suspect that's in my future too. It sounds better than it is, my nanna looked pretty hideous, sigh. I knew that the band required a LOT of work on the part of myself - I had people I knew who were banded. I liked that. I wasnt after an easy answer, I wanted to change my habits and my outlook - I know now a bit more about other surgeries and realise nothing is easy or automatic, however that was my thought process at the time and I still feel very proud of what I've achieved. Unlike many others here, I had NEVER been successful at losing weight, I had never ever lost more than about 15 lb on any attempt. I wanted to do this ONCE more and ONCE only. Keeping the weight off was a huge part of my decision to have surgery. Also, the biggest factor - the band is the only really common WLS here. I dont even know where you'd go to get a bypass and sleeves havent taken off yet. -
hi juniper im also considering a revision. im going to south america in july so i will get an unfill then once i go back to have Fluid added back i plan to start my process. i have lost weight with my band and im happy for that but i certainly need to lose more and think a different surgery will help me get to goal. my band is not all the way full but i never wanted to fill it to the max, i always wanted some wiggle room. i wish you success in the next phase of your journey. daqui

Will All Of You Pray For Me Please?
Kalimomof3 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on Wednesday:) My swallow study showed things weren't moving through my sleeve as fast as they should be so I have not anything to eat or drink since Wednesday morning. My doc is talking about worse case scenario being re-operation with conversion to bypass if things don't start working soon.. Turns out my stomach and now my sleeve is shaped like a letter J and the contrast is slowed by the loop at the bottom of my sleeve I have had no nausea or vomiting so my Doc is going to let me try some liquid to see how it goes... Pray for me that everything passes through well and I don't need re-operation... -
Why Did You Choose The Lap Band Vs. Gastric Bypass (Rny)
terrydumont46 replied to Boobear7's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
i went into surgery thinking i was having the bypass. i was getting the bypass because it would deal with my diabetis better. but i came out of surgery with the band. they couldn't do the bypass because of adhesions and scar tissue on my small intestine. i am glad now that i have the band. the weight loss is slower but i am healthier than i would have been with the bypass. my diabetis is under control, and instead of 200 units of insulin a day i only take 30 units at night. in a few months we will be adjusting that because my fasting bs and average for the last 5 mos. is 100. by those standards i am doing great. good luck to you and your decision. -
Why Did You Choose The Lap Band Vs. Gastric Bypass (Rny)
MandaMom23 replied to Boobear7's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
For me, the other options were just too invasive. I also liked that the band is removable if absolutely necessary, and I can have it adjusted as needed for the rest of my life. With the sleeve/bypass, if you stretch your stomach back out there's no simple adjustment to fix that, and once you're insides are cut out/ and or rerouted, you can't just put that back. It's obviously a very personal decision for each individual. Just keep doing your research to find which tool you feel will work best for you...for both the short and long term. Wishing you the best of luck with your decision! -
Why Did You Choose The Lap Band Vs. Gastric Bypass (Rny)
bbbanded replied to Boobear7's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
During my initial meeting with the doctor he asked if I was a volume eater or a sweet eater, and being the type who hates to waste food, I would always have to finish what was on my plate. Volume equaled lap band, sweets equaled gastric bypass. I guess with the dumping syndrome from eating sweets, where small amounts of food with the band would suffice for me. -
A bunch of Problems and a little rant.
catwoman7 replied to Stormwood's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
by "second surgery", do you mean you have a second stricture that needs to be stretched? That's not unusual. I had to go in twice to get mine stretched - after that, I was fine - never had problems with them again. About 5% of bypass patients get strictures. The PA at my bariatric clinic said it's the most common complication - and it's an easy fix. They almost never happen once you reach the 3-month-post-op mark, so it's doubtful you'll have one again after you get this one stretched. you'll be able to eat more the further out you get from surgery. It's really just the first few months that you have certain food restrictions and can only eat a tiny amount of food. you should feel a lot better once they stretch out the stricture - and it's unlikely you'll have another one after this.
