OMG how awful! Im so sorry. I hope you are feeling better. Are you now thinking of doing the gastric bypass?
-
Hello All, I'm sorry I've not been too active on the board. It is true that after you've lost all your weight, you suddenly have much less free time. This is a good thing I think. Anyway, my revision surgery is Thursday with Dr Ortiz in TJ Mexico. I leave Wednesday morning at 6am (yikes) for pre-op. I am so glad to be getting it done. This last month I've been surprised at how much I've suffered with "last meal" syndrome. Things like fried pickles (my FAVORITE) I have a difficult time eating once I'm fully restricted, so I totally pigged out this last month. I've enjoyed the food, but I will enjoy having my 123lb body back much more. Its amazing how much more ten pounds does when you're at this weight. I figure the ten pound will easily come off during the month on liquids. I went and bought a huge variety of liguid foods today so I'll have all sorts of things to choose from - which is VERY important. Liquids get old fast as it is - if you only have Slim Fast it'll get old even faster. Mae

Before surgery I told just my close family. I made sure they knew the difference between LapBand & bypass. They were extremely supportive once they understood. Was not sure whether I wanted others to know or not. I think I was waiting to see if it was really gonna work for me. It did! Now I tell everyone. Well, anyone that asks. Then I can explain that I still have to eat right but it's such a great tool. I'm normally a very shy person when it comes to strangers, but boy have I changed!

Hi, my name is Lynne and I'm just getting started on my wls journey. I have two education sessions this week coming up and my first appointment the following week. I'm planning on bypass but will come to a complete decision after speaking with the bariatric folks. Very excited to get started! So, I'm a wife to Jim for 16 years (almost) and have a 9 year old son. Also two cats and a dog! Can't forget my furbabies! I've been battling my weight most of my life to some degree. My most severe issues started once I hit college. Like everyone here, I've run the gammut of diets! I've done low carb, low cal, liquid, etc. Lost a lot and gained A LOT back! I'm so very ready to reclaim my life and participate and not just watch! I'm a bit of a shy person until I get comfortable so please, if I have a slow start here it's just me being socially awkward lol Really looking forward to getting to know everyone and sharing our journeys together!

Anyone having surgery 7-15?
franyfamilia replied to *Misty*Raine*'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Misty and Pik, I had my gastric bypass yesterday and it went great. I have none of the nausea, cramps, or excess gas that was expected. I took GasX thin strips and I believe that helped a lot. I got up today and made 10 laps around the surgery corridor and didn't feel much pain at all. My stomach is sore now but just feels like I have done a lot of sit ups. I'm so glad it's over and I'm on my way. I lost almost 10 lbs on my pre-surgery diet. So I will be counting down from 221. My beginning weight was 247. Good luck to you and hope your surgery goes as easily as mine. Once I got to the hospital I was completely calm. My hubby was a nervous wreck though until it was over. Fran -
anyone REGRET the sleeve?
marfar7 replied to elpasovet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did the same thing in 2009 with the lapband. I'd read a few things on the internet, made an appt with a dr and within 2 weeks I had completed my nutritionist and psych appts and was in surgery. Had no idea what I was getting myself into. Not sure why my insurance didn't require at least a time of consideration, but they moved quickly. While I loved my band - until I didn't and I lost most of my excess weight with it, it finally ahd enuf of my destruction to it. I couldn't figure out how to eat slowly, making me vomit frequently. Causing a slip. When I was facing a revision, I did alot of research on the RNY and the sleeve. I had gained 30 lbs in the year my band was unfilled after the slip so all I had to lose was 40 lbs (bmi was 28 at 174 lbs). I felt the RNY was a bit drastic for my purposes. But I knew if I just had the band removed without a revision, I would be back up to 250 soon. So while I did virtually NO research on my first wls, I did tons of research for my sleeve. WHile I'm 13 months out I still have 15 lbs to goal. It's going very slowly now, very slowly. The first 100 lbs is easy peasy compared with the last 15. But do I regret surgery? Never. Not the lapband or the sleeve. Comparing the 2 would be another whole post so I won't bore anyone with those details. Do ur research tho. U can't back pedal afterwards... Good luck! -
I am sorry..I thought I was in a sleeve forum. Disregard my comments as I don't know if this applies to bypass.

Good morning, happy to find our forum to check in as we prepare for our life changing surgery. I'm grateful to be on this journey. My bypass is scheduled January 23, 2023.

$500 non-refundable fee ???? Are you kidding?
klus263 replied to former_vbg's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My doctor required $205 upfront for his first visit. But this is being applid to coinsurance after insurance pays. I first freaked about it as I had to wait until I had the cash but once I started there was not turning back. I really wanted this surgery adn I do not regret this at all. I have monthly support groups. The insurance scheduler was great in making sure I had all my paperwork and also responded to my numerous emails. Today I sent email to the bariatric nurse and she responded within 30 minutes. My support staff is great with my doctor and I have no regrets whatsoever. I was very confident with this office as I had an old supervisor who had her bypass done with him. -
Weight Gain After Sleeve (Seeking Advice Not Judgment)
FluffyChix replied to GetBack_095's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
IDK. I think you are a fairly unique lady and VET. Maybe in the top 1-3% of people/"types". You DID learn your lessons while losing. You DID incorporate your doc/RD instructions and adapted them to work for you long term. And when you experience regain for any reason, you've set a protocol that is inspiring and amazing to watch. And it gives me hope for my future--that I'm not doomed to regain it all without being able to maintain. Because you quickly and efficiently go back to your roots and get rid of the regain. I feel like the OP has not done the work. Or maybe the surgery was the wrong surgery for him/her? We are all so unique, one solution won't fit all. They claim the reason for the regain and for not getting lower to their goal was based on undisciplined behavior. But if you lack discipline before, what will change this time? How will you magically change for good? Any of us can do things for short periods of time. But being "habilitated" sometimes, even more than being "RE-habilitated" is important. Not all of us can do that on our own. Not everyone learns things the first time. Maybe some of us DO need the surgeon revision or the RD new plan/accountability that meetings provide? Maybe we DO need bariatric therapy to discover what is driving us to self-harming behaviors? It usually isn't the short game that's the problem for any of us...it's playing for the long game. It is about changing lifelong behaviors for long term success. And that's a TALL order for most of us (the other 97%). Dunno...just spit balling here. -
I am late with this but I will some of the suggestion. I am 1 week today with my bypass and I too am experiencing the pain with sipping. I asked around to people in my support group and no one knows what I'm talking about so it feels good to know that I am alone. I think I'm dehydrated because the pain keeps me from wanting to put anything in my mouth but I will try harder.

Are we not the perfect scientific study against the idea of calorie/fat burning?
Carriejess replied to chunkyloverlovesyou's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I believe that the more you have abused your body with a million different diets the more your metabolism is damaged. Last year I ate super healthy and was doing a lot of crossfit. Didn't lose any weight...because my metabolism was so damaged with fifteen years of diets and previous wls. This is why you get the syndrome of the person who is overweight and never really been on a diet joining weight watchers and losing twice as much weight as their friend who has done every diet under the sun. Having wls surgery especially sleeve/bypass helps to reset the metabolism. That is why this time around I am less concerned with starving myself thin like I did with my band. I have a second chance at eating well and at a good calorie level and I am going to take it. I don't want my body to think that I can only eat 800 calories a day for the rest of its life to maintain. I have found the Dr Weiner videos really helpfull with this. Everyone is different and this is only my opinion and approach! -
I think you look awesome!! Tomorrow will be one week since I had my surgery. I have been worrying about how I will look and had thought about starting to save for plastic surgery. My cousin had gastric bypass. She had all the extra skin removed from her stomach, breast implants, and had her thighs done. On the thighs, her surgery scars are on her groin. I noticed that most people that had the sleeve look a lot different from bypass. I asked my Doctor about it and she said it has to do with you skin type. Thanks for the picture, maybe I will be as lucky as you and not need the plastic surgery.

Have Surgery Date, SCARED
quakergirl replied to dawnsunshine35's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Complications are possible with any surgery, but the lap-band was designed to be much, much safer than the gastric bypass. That sad story about the poor man who died of a heart attack made the news because it was a very unusual occurance. There are many people who die from gastric bypass that never make the news. I am another Port Huron bandster. I think Dr. Boutt and Dr. Bhesania are both excellent, very experienced lap-band surgeons. You'll be in good hands. Regarding the issue of being around for your child, well, your losing the weight will probably be a good thing for your child as well. After this surgery, you'll probably have more energy to be able to spend quality time with your kid! Good luck to you. -
When i told my father.. He said NO, NO, NO. right off the bat. He thought it was the gastric bypass. My mom attended the 2 info sessions with me and we explained the LapBand to him.. Slowly he began to change his tune. He's still just scared for the surgery part because a Patriots former coach had the bypass and almost died. For some reason, My dad can't look past that. He seems more okay with it now. I mean, he's even taken me to my appointments. One co-worker does not believe in surgery, but it's easy for her to say because she's so thin. Then i have the co-worker who did have the lapband and i see her success and everyone telling her how great she looks..She's very open about it. The people who disapprove won't say it to her face.. If only they knew, I am getting mine next.

Yes, I feel the same way as well. Although, still a month and a half from surgery, the only people who know that I have made this decision to be banded is my DH, my mom, my sister, and my mom's friend ( who is also being banded). I really do not want any of my DH's family knowing about it simply because they think that weight loss should be on your own, not with the help of advanced technology. But yet, most of the family is still obese on my side and my DH's side. My aunt had the gastric bypass, and now, to even talk about it with the family, they are like....Oh, are you sure you want to go through what your aunt has gone through<------she has had a hard time with it all and said she would not do it again. Well, I have told them, this is not the same, and if something goes wrong (praying that it wont) mine can be removed. My mom was like...wow, thats better then. The only reason my mom's friend knows is because she told my mom that she was having it done, and my mom (bless her heart, but she likes to talk) told her I was too having it done. Well, anyway, it is a personal choice, especially when you have tried many other things or everything in the book. It is not easy making this decision, but as long as you have a few people who you can lean on before, during, and after, that is all that matters. Like people from this board, if you are not going to tell anyone else, this board is here to help you through it.

Cathy - Your doc sounds like mine - I had homework too - there are so many people here who don't know what to eat or do after they they have surgery - It sounds like you will have all your facts so that you will be able to succeed at this and not be lost as what needs to be done once you are banded. I have 1 older sister - she was happy for me - she doesn't have a weight problem - My little bro was ok too.. I guess they figured I was a big girl and I could make my own decisions. My support has been my Lucky#7 gang - We have the greatest group and my 50+ ladies - these are the 2 thread that I have posted to religiously since I joined in May.. Bypass vs lapbands - for me and per my doc it depend on many issues - if you are a big sweet eater - then bypass may be a better option as you don't absorb your calories and with the band you do and candy/sweet are easly eaten with the band - For me it was a portion control issue - I didn't eat tons of junk just too much good home cooked food and no exercise. Welll gotta get back to work - ttyl....

August 6th lap band to gastric bypass surgery
Sreeves replied to Gabriela 6's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I am not scheduled yet but have my final appointment (nutritionist) on Aug 13 before going to insurance for approval. I am assuming I will be a September surgery patient. Allielee it is very good to hear that you are finding life after bypass easier than with the band. I never found anything about the band to be neither easy nor intuitive. I am so looking forward to my second last chance to take control of my health. Sface if the August people don't wanna hang out I will hang out with you! Of course the more the merrier, though! -
@ please be careful with the Diet Coke. Carbonation is no good for the sleeve. I used to be a big time soda and seltzer water drinker. But every time I am tempted I just think how hard it would be to do a revision and I am perfectly happy with my new vitamin water zero addiction thank you very much.

Reflux just a few days after Bypass
KettyLiz posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey all - I've been lurking on the forums for a while here, but I just had surgery a week ago and I have a question. I had GERD prior to having gastric bypass, and I understand that for many people, GERD resolves with surgery. However, tonight I had a tiny bit of heartburn happening. I used to have intense reflux if I didn't take my omeprazole, and this was just a fraction of that, but it still irritating. So my question is - did anyone else have reflux this soon after bypass surgery? And if so, did it ever go away? Say, when your waist got smaller and stopped putting pressure on your stomach? Am I doomed to keep having reflux if it is popping back up this soon? -
Ladies-- How Did You Keep Up With Bra Sizes?!
Catracks replied to vanb0052's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am using the tightest hooks for the circumference and have had to slide the shoulder straps the shortest they can go. I can go down a cup size probably. Yesterday I tried on a size large bikini top (it must be juniors because it's Roxy). It fit more or less, but I have to make sure I'm all tucked in what with all the lose skin. I have 40+ pounds to go depending on if I revise my final goal. When I started I was sure I was not going anywhere near plastics. now I'm not so sure. -
My Dr Illan experience!
Luv2bslim replied to North_Chicky's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Or if you are a "revision" patient. -
I'd get VERY small fills and go very slow with any kind of change. If you keep having trouble you might consider revision to another band or the sleeve.

First step...call Don Mills at Inamed and ask if he has had any success with fighting the BC "experimental" thing. Sometimes, they have had the surgeons explain whay the patient is NOT a good candidate for the bypass and they get through that way. Anybody got Don's number close by? Other first step...find out if your employer is a self-pay for insurance. If so, they are actually the ones making the decisions and BC is just administering the plan. If not, they are covered by the CA state insurance commissioner (they have a web site.) They have a three times and then to outside review thing. One thing I found handy when I was on the phone pretending I was my daughter (her job at the time did not allow for personal business calls) fighting for her breast reduction with Aetna...dumb-sounding-questions-with-a-plan seem to get their attention. As in, "Okay, so does this count as the first time you've turned me down? So then, does this go to outside appeal after the second time and the third time is the outside appeal or do you have to actually turn me down three times before we go there...I'm sorry, but this is new to me and I want to make sure I understand it all." And ask everyone how to spell their name, and explain that's it's nothing personal but you know it's probably going to end up going for outside review and you at least want to spell the names correctly. Be loving and kind and their new best friend. Also, I did end up using Aetna's journal citations for our kid's appeal. If I could find a contrary opinion in the abstract, I quoted it, just like they did. if I could find a later publication by the same researcher which contradicted the first citation, I quoted it. They never DID turn her down the second time, because they knew that she was ready to go the whole way and that they would lose. Go for it. Sue

second time having bypass? Sweet
