Lapband to sleeve revision done oct 3
Road2health replied to Road2health's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Timarland, I totally understand where you are at. I had the lapband for 14.5 years until my revision this week. I was surprised how short the stay was in the hospital. I checked in at 9:30 am on Tuesday and surgery was at 11:30 am. I stayed one night and the let me go home at 7:30 am the next day. It has been so different from the lapband and so far I love it.:) -
Hey, I was kind of reluctant to share my story but, I think it’ll be good for me. I’m 2 weeks and 5 Days post-op. I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on 9-19-17. I spent two nights in the hospital. When decided to have gastric bypass surgery I was 331 lbs. The day of surgery I was 311 lbs. I am currently 297. Surgery actually went fine and there were no complications. I was in pain but that’s normal right after surgery. When I came home, again I was in pain but I was given hydrocodone for relief. As the pain started to go away I was able to do more. I was walking fine, getting out of the house, just simply getting back to my normal routine. Eating was a little difficult at first but transitioning into the different stages got easier to deal with. Of course, everyone is different but the earlier stages is where you find out what foods you can eat with no problem and what foods you can’t keep down. This past week, my pain began to increase where my main incision site is. I can’t lay in bed, get out of bed, tie my shoe laces, or pick anything up off the floor. The hydrocodone had finished so my dr suggested I take a liquid form of over the counter pain reliever ( which worked for 30 minutes at a time). I called my Dr once again because the pain had gotten so bad. He had prescribed me tramadol. Currently I’m taking tramadol and I’m pretty much still in pain. My 1-month post-op appointment is on the 18th with my surgeon and I’m hoping the pain subsides by then. How long has your pain lasted? How many of you get emotionally overwhelmed by the pain? -Christine D-

Looking for April peeps for RNY (Bypass)
Bino replied to claddagh66's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was Thursday, Apri 7. I was released yesterday. I'm a sleeve to bypass revision due to a few medical issues. The pain is nothing compared to what I had when they did the sleeve. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Getting up and walking keeps the gas pains at bay. -
Short-Term Disability Approval/Denial
btrieger replied to alicia3138's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask your surgeon what he thinks about you returning to work. We had a truck driver in one of my mandatory nutrition and behavior classes that had a similar question. The answer was that he shouldn't need more than a week or two off. The heavy lifting restrictions are usually for bypass patients. -

You are really doing well congratulations! I am 50 but I feel young - I have alot of living to do - with a 9 year old - I want to live to terrorize everyone until I am least 90!!!! Hopefully getting my revision within the next 4-6 weeks - BUT thankyou - you have inspired me again. -
Hi everyone, I am Karen and I live in the Seattle area. I had my surgery on 9/23 and I am actually a revision, I went from a sleeve to the bypass. Would love to connect with others who are starting out on the journey around the same time to share support and stories...and maybe some grumbling once in a while.

GERD---Gastric Bypass vs Sleeve
Bufflehead replied to animallover1247's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One major factor is what is causing your GERD. Many obese people have hiatal hernias, which cause GERD. If that is the case, the hernia is typically repaired at the same time as the sleeve surgery and that can cause your GERD to resolve or improve. But if it is not caused by a hernia, some surgeons will refuse to perform a sleeve, or strongly recommend bypass, because bypass is typically much better for GERD. A lot of it depends on how bad your GERD is, as well. You will typically have an upper GI series or endoscopy prior to surgery, and that can help figure out what is causing your GERD, i.e., do you have a hiatal hernia. -
Wow sorry to hear that, I hope they find a reason to your foam troubles. I’m getting bypass soon, and I have read, this usually happens with certain food or certain amount of food, but I read you eat slow and wait to drink. I hope the pointer giving about will help out. Best of luck. “There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits.” —Michael Phelps

Telling people you've decided on WLS...
cnjashton replied to blashlee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's hard to decide who to tell. I of course told my hubby and best friend when I first started considering this plus two friends who have had bypass surgery and answered 500 questions before i even went to the initial meeting. I was going to wait and tell my family and some other friends until I got approved for surgery (no point in hearing all the feedback/worrying people if I didn't get approved) but I finally told them when they were trying to plan a family vacation the month I would be having my surgery and wouldn't take my polite no for an answer. I have only told my boss and one other close friend at work so far what I am having done. I am also having my hernia fixed so I am kind of sticking to that story for the rest of my co-workers for now. I am also a teacher so sent a note home to the parents just saying I was having surgery and the dates I would be out. I am not ashamed by any means just don't want any negative feedback (not that I have gotten any so far) I have several friends that have had it done...one posted off the bat on Facebook, one waited till her year-versary and announced it and the other still has yet to post. My sister is getting married in June and I am the matron of honor and I know I will be around a lot of family that will obviously notice so I am sure I will have to tell everyone then before that just a case by case basis I guess! -
Question About Revision
pennreporter replied to lovex5's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My ins co paid for what was supposed to be revision and ended up bein a removal and then approved the replacement of either band or sleeve and I was almost at goal weight. The argument is that it took the band to get you to your weight nd you would still need the band for maintenance. Now they may have approved mine because I think we all new surgeon 1st surgeon screwed up. My stomach was adhesed to my spleen which I believe was an inexperienced surgeon touching something w instruments he shouldn't. If they don't approve I would definitely appeal w or without an atty. but because it's a complication of first surf they usually will ok it. -
I chose the band over the bypass because the surgery is less invasive and recovery time is shorter. I've known a few people who got the bypass and had minor complications that put them in the hospital for several days. I don't have that much time off from work available in addition to the surgery. I've so far just had an initial seminar and have put the insurance wheels in motion. I also like that the procedure is reversible if need be.

Did your surgeon take out the band first and then wait?
PaPaBob replied to Glendaaus's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am having my LAPBAND removed and my revision to a sleeve done next Wednesday Aug. 17th. Band installed July 2009 but never achieved any restriction for two years. Have lost 83 lbs but just thru dieting and behavioral modification. So, the sleeve will have to continue my WL in the future. PreAdmission testing all done and I am good to go for the surgery. -
Possible blockage/ stricture converting to bypass
Babbs replied to sassypants's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
First off, just breath. You have no idea if it's a stricture or blockage. And I beleive those things have pain associated with them, no? Have you been in pain? I would rule more on the side of GERD. Do you take a PPI or ever been diagnosed with GERD or reflux? It's really common with the sleeve. And so is regurgitating in your sleep when you have it. And unfortunately, sometimes a bypass is the solution for severe GERD. But I'm not a doctor.Get your tests done and go from there. Good luck and let us know what they say! -
4 years after surgery gained 50 pounds
sc101071 replied to Ingrid33's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I did not have the bypass, but congrats on regaining your footing. I have read many questions on here about regain and the ability to re-lose. You should keep this thread active or create another one with your story and input on how your surgery is working after a reset. You would be a benefit to a lot of people and it would help to hold you accountable. Win-win. Best of luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Questioning the Dr. How to word things.
Spinoza replied to ShoppGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would try to keep your questions open ended. I'm interested in hearing how your previous SADI patients have progressed and where they have ended up. Have they had complications or have any of them regretted having SADI? If so, why? Would it be possible to give me a ballpark, numbers wise, of the spilt between your sleeve, bypass, and SADI procedures? Do you have to undertake special training in SADI, given that it's not a routine WLS? Please can you explain...(whatever specific Qs you have about the procedure or life after the procedure, or whatever) It would help me with my decision to know how many of your previous SADI patients were second surgeries and how many first. If you were advising a relative of yours who was considering SADI, what would you tell them? If you were in my position would you have this particular procedure? How do immediate and long term complications tend to manifest? -
Questioning the Dr. How to word things.
Shanna NYC replied to ShoppGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You do have legitimate questions and ones that any doctor or their team should be comfortable answering as they are important to you and your peace of mind in consideration of another procedure. I know via your prior post you said you aren’t on the socials quite as much, but if you listen to podcasts I’d recommend BariNation. There is one of the hosts who had been sleeved and always felt like they could consume more than they should, and did not want a bypass (which he was originally told he would need to be sleeved first, lose enough to be then safe enough to have a bypass). He thought a bypass would be the only option and for whatever reason was not keen on it. He was then introduced to a doctor who said that’s not his only option and told him about the SADI. He eventually got his evaluation and found out that though the sleeve is said to remove 80% of your stomach, his was only 50-60% so he wasn’t wrong that his eating capacity was more than he thought. He recently did his revision surgery and part of it was resleeving on top of the reroute of the intestinal tract. So yes part of the procedure should be to reevaluate your stomach size to determine whether it should be revised. -
I'm new here but hoping someone can help me or give me some sound advice. I decided in Aug 2014 to have the bypass surgery as I read it can really help with diabetes which I was diagnosed with last year and now take 5 shots per day. I was familiar with the director of bariatric surgery of the local hospital as he had performed my colonoscopy last year. After attending his information class, I decided to proceed with the gastric bypass. I've completed all of his requirements then yesterday had another appointment with him hoping my package would now be ready to submit to the insurance company for approval. I've told him all along I neet to get this done by the end of the year since I've met my out of pocket maxium and because of my job. Our busy season starts January 1st and it's impossible to get PTO until June. He had previously said at my Oct appointment that if I was able to get everything done by the Nov appointment and assuming my insurance company doesn't take weeks to approve then I should be able to get it done by the end of the year. At my appointment yesterday he said he would review my paperwork at my Dec 11 appointment and I should have surgery in Jan or Feb. I left his office in tears! I'm ready to find another doctor! Any advice would be very appreciated!

Want to change surgeon
Brandyjune replied to ga_kathy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@ga_kathy I am having the gastric bypass, submitted to insurance last Friday so I'm waiting on approval. They said I should have an answer in 5-7 business days. I'm getting really anxious because I've never had any type surgery before and I just have no idea what to expect! I've never stayed at a hospital and I'm wondering if I'm going to be able to sleep at all. I'm such a light sleeper and pretty much any noise wakes me up. Anyone have suggestions for sleeping in the hospital? Maybe earplugs and or headphones? -
Hello everyone! A little over two years ago a friend and I struggled to work out everyday. We pushed through and did it though. We were very diligent on what we ate and how much. However with fail we never lost the weight. We both struggled with weight all of our lives. One day I causally mentioned WLS to her. I told her it was something I was going to look into. Well soon after that I had some medical issues and I felt I could get the weight off myself so I didn't follow through with meeting with a surgeon. My friend did though and started her journey to a happier healthier life. Insurance approved her with a bmi over 40. She had comorbidities but didn't list them(I think). Well today she looks absolutely amazing. I am so proud of her. So with that said here I am. I have had chronic problems with gastric ulcers, gerd and joint problems. I met with my surgeon this past November. I did everything. Sleep study, psych, bloodwork, cardiologist, NUT. EVERYTHING! whew. Well my paperwork was turned into Tricare and they denied it. They said I didn't have any of the listed comorbidities. My bmi is 38.7. I have PCOS, endometriosis, arthritis, gastric ulcers, gerd and severe back pain. I have been seeing a orthopedic for years now for my back pain. So my coordinator filed a appeal but I told her regardless I was going to pay for it. My surgery is scheduled for February 25th!! I can't wait. I am hoping Tricare changes their minds but if not so help me I will have this done. I am ready to change my life for the best!

what are the most common reasons people get their band removed?
Lady VS replied to BQT's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I went in thinking I'd be banded for life. That was my plan. However, I have been nauseated and vomiting off and on throughout the year which has made my band slip. Even though I have no saline for the past 8 months, I'm still nauseous. I'm not as big as I was when I was first banded. I don't have acid reflux, my esophagus is fine, however, last year, it was slightly swollen. I am currently prepping my body for this revision surgery I'm having next week. I have my first appointment on January 2nd with a surgeon. My doctor recommended this last February but because of insurance I have had to wait. My questions is how did you decide between the sleeve or bypass? The doctors office told me the doctor will make a recommendation but its really up to the patient. Also what questions should I ask that you wish you would have asked at your first appointment?

Denied again and surgeon's office is silent
Mimi52 replied to IMissVegas's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have Aetna and they denied me also, they approved removal but not revision. I wrote a long detailed appeal, showing all the issues I had wit the lap band, dates of fill, slips and so on. Got all info from dr notes. Finally after 30 days they approved. I know there are law firms that help with appeals to insurance if you want to go that route. Sorry not sure of the cost. Hopefully an appeal will work. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
My Doc Wants To Band Me......
MizzStar replied to blessedmomof2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think because gastric sleeve is seen as a pre-liminary surgery. Once you have lost enough weight the next step would be gastric bypass surgery to help loose the 20-50% of excess weight that you didn't loose with the sleeve. So I am guessing he sees the band as a more safe and efficient way to get the rest of the weight off! -
Tired, what did you do that helped you?
James Marusek replied to Trayjay33's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
What type of B12 Vitamin do you take and how often? Did you have a RNY gastric bypass surgery? -
I am scheduled for Dec 9th. I'm so excited to finally get this started. I had Lapband Jan 2009. I lost almost 90 pounds then had a slip and revision surgery in May 2010. Then I started having problems again and had it removed in March 2012. I've since gained all the weight back that I previously lost (that has been pretty devastating!). I can't wait to get on the losing track again.
