  1. I was banded on march 27th and everything was going really good until this past week and i am eating everything! I go for my first fill in a week! Tell me this goes away and gets better!
  2. Hello everyone, my name is Jamie and I'm from New Jersey, lol. I've been kinda snooping around the forums for a while and I figured I would check in and say hi. I just had my surgery this past Friday, the 6th and so far so good. I'm still on the Clear liquids and doing my best to get enough Protein in. I've been slowly drinking Isopure and find that I like the Alpine Punch the best. I'm going in tomorrow for my first visit with my doc post surgery. I am 6'5", and I started out at 357 lbs. I weighed in this morning at 339 which I am happy about but a bit concerned that I'm losing too fast if that's possible, lol. Anyway, my goal is about 250lbs. Also, does anyone have any suggestions on how to battle the gas pains I'm having in my chest? Also, any other suggestions you could give on what I can expect over the next few weeks? Thanks, I look forward to meeting you all.
  3. It has been 6 weeks since my surgery and I am still getting daily and frequent headaches. I use Excedrin Migraine which usually works and if not then I use a prescribed Migraine medication. The worst part is that the headaches are waking me up at night. Anyone else have that problem?

    Super Tight!

I was banded the day before you! My loss has been really slow, as well. I'm still searching for that "sweet spot" that will prevent me from being hungry all the dang time! I've found that my fills actually tend to tighten up as time goes on, so I've been waiting for three to four weeks between fills. I think that some people experience a loss of restriction as swelling from the stomach irritation due to Fluid being added to the band goes down. As with so many other things in this journey, I think that it's a really individual experience!

    Energy to exercise post surgery?

How far out are you? I didn't even attempt to exercise for 4 weeks post op. I have had no issues with endurance since that point. At first it was hard, but I have built up over time. I did a five mile bike ride today and six miles yesterday and meet with a trainer tomorrow. It will get easier.
  6. Since The third week of novemeber I have been able to eat alot. At first I was restrickted and could not eat first thing in the am now I am hungry all the time I am eating everything like cookies and cheese nip ( i know not good) I think its time for another fill. but i am scared last time i thought it was time and they ended up taking out what they had put in scary but i have to get this weight off and i have no motivation to eat right at this point.

    Did I Mess Up Already?

I agree!! It's hard to keep it in mind but it's my band, my life, my journey, my health. I haven't lost much but I've lost. And if I do it right I will continue to lose. I get sad when I compare myself to others but it's my own fight. No one else is exactly like me or has the same issues I do so comparing doesn't help. I know others may have it easier or better than me but some have it harder or struggle more. My fills are always different. Some I feel right away, some take 1-2 weeks, some last for a day. I never know. I just got up to 7.5 cc. But that can't define me or my success. That may or may not be perfect for me. Only time will tell. Best of luck to you.

    Healthier Weight v Chichester

I have been told 4-6 weeks, but just via email. I know what you mean, as I really want my surgery towards the beginning of the summer holidays because of childcare. I went for a consultation at Healthier Weight last week and they could do it the following week, so it's tempting. Although in the long run waiting another month and having the right surgeon and aftercare I reckon is the more sensible option.... Keep me posted on what you decide x katie

    Open Surgery

Hi Guys, I was banded on 8/5/08 and it ended up being open surgery rather than laposcopy. I was wondering if anyone knows how long the recovery might be and when you think that I might be able to return to work. It's already been over two weeks and I am still very sore. I haven't been able to do much, even sitting here at my computer is painful. Also, does anyone know what I can put on my scar so that it will heal. I'm still bleeding a little from it. Thanks for any and all advise.

I just started the Couch to 5k last week and now I have the Nike+ Sport band which I am LOVIN'. I see they have group challenges and stuff you can set up, so I thought it would be fun to do that with my fab febs if anyone wants!

New Banded and was starving day 6

I was banded on a Friday and by Sunday night I was starving...lol. I had to wait until the following Friday before I was allowed to start mushy foods. The doctor said I was probably a quick healer and thus experienced hunger sooner than others. That week felt like torture, but I made it through. At any rate, just stick with the plan. There is a reason why you are only supposed to eat soft mushy foods and that is because you are still healing. meats, etc. may not be such a great idea right now because you do not want to disrupt the healing process....not trying to sound preachy, just dont want you to disturb anything. I found that eating a scrambled egg kept me feeling full longer as well as mashed potatoes because of how dense they are. Although eating yogurt and applesauce was good, I did find myself more hungry than when I ate the other things. good luck!
  13. Well I had my surgery on a Wed and went back to work on the following Monday. I was walking a mile everyday by then so my pain was not all that bad by then. The tape on my insisions did not come off after two weeks (my Dr. said they could come off after 10 days so I waited an extra 4 days) and at that I used baby oil to soften the glue to get them off. I still have some pain where the port is but that is mostly because of the port being attached to the muscle wall and it needs to adjust to the attachment.
  14. I was sleeved about a month ago and I still have some pain that is probably at a level 6 if I touch it. My IV was in my hand and it started to get puffy and a day after it was swelling a nurse said it was infiltrated and I had to have it changed. At first there was some minor pain at the site and a few days after surgery I chalked it up to my body healing after all of the trauma. I spoke to my Dr. about it and he said it could be a very small clot but not to worry as it won't really harm me and to apply a warm compress. 2 weeks later, I am still in pain (only when it is touched or moved) and the area above my wrist is swollen. Not grotesquely swollen, but it is noticeable. I was reading about IV infiltration and one poster on another board said she had developed scar tissue and it would take 6-12 months before the pain would go away. Has ANYONE had something like this occur? I am just wondering when my wrist and hand will go back to normal.
  15. After i woke up from sugery my foot, ankle and part of my calf was numb. Three weeks later,it still is and i don't know what to do. I called my pcp and surgeon still no help. I'm beginning to lose hope. I'm losing weight but at what cost? Walking? Any one went or is going through this? Please share your insight.
  16. So this morning I headed down to Lahey at 0-dark-30 before the morning commuter traffic and settled in to wait...nervous as a cat, I realized, and excited at the same time. There were 3 of us. One was a woman who currently has the lap band, has had no complications in 6 years with it, but had lost 80 lb. but it was not successful to get the other 50 or 60 lb. she would like to achieve; she is wanting the by pass procedure. The other woman wanted by pass surgery too. I was thinking sleeve or band...and vacillating between the two, having done my due diligence and thought with my family history I might one day need my "absorption" of medications and nutrients to be intact and may need access to my stomach through my mouth for testing...I was correct in my self recommendation...I should not have by pass surgery, for just those reasons. I met with the dietician, and then the nurse practioner...and then a psychologist. Great experience! Wonderful team there...I felt like I was in good hands. The nurse practioner remembered me from the info session a couple weeks ago...she had noted I had asked really good questions...and noted today I had really done my homework and knew the procedures and possible complications well. I am a really good candidate for the sleeve (assuming my upper GI series does not show I have GERD or a big hiatal hernia. And if that all goes well, and assuming the surgeon makes that recommendation as well, that is the surgery I will likely have...hopefully before the end of September. I am also a good candidate for the lap band...BUT...I might not be such a low risk candidate in 10 years when I am 80, if I were to have a problem with the band requiring another surgery...so that is what I am thinking today. And all this is, of course, predicated on my insurance covering the surgery. My BMI is high enough but I don't know that I can have documented proof that I have been seriously obese for these last 5 years...because when I went to the doctor I would decline being weighed!!! So we will see. I have an appoinment in 1 mo...for the GI series and appointment with nurse practioner...and then a morn later the last week in August I meet again with the dietician and finally with the surgeon...and get a surgery date! I left really "UP" and relieved...and confident that this is the right thing for me. So whether I have the sleeve or band...I think I can do this and do well. Christine
  17. You're not a slow loser; you've lost about 1.3 pounds per week on average, which is an ideal rate. Plus, if you didn't lose much right away AND had plateaus, you must have lost more than that per week when you did lose! And if you're still at your sweet spot, your weight loss probably won't stop; I actually lost a bit more in the second year than I did in the first, exceeding my goal. Keep going, and keep focusing on the positive!
  18. the first 10 months of my lap band odyssey have been so easy. I had my fills, lost the weight, no problems or issues...... I did have gallbladder surgery the 1st of August and had a complete unfill. I had 5.5 CCs up to that point, and had to start over. I had 1 CC put in on September 17th to get me back to 5 CC. So I'm still not quite where I was. I was doing great. I went on a retreat weekend on Sept. 25 to the 28th. I did fine. I overate a little, and was uncomfortable, but no issues. Up to this point I had experienced a PB only twice in 10 months. Well, starting Monday the 30th (a week ago today) I have PBd 8 times!!! what is up with that? This long after my last fill? I'm supposed to go on Friday to get another one, but certainly don't need it now. why after all this time, am I having trouble with this now? I don't understand it? Why the delayed reaction? Comments?

    Walking?

4 hours after my surgery I was required to walk. I was so out of it and on pain meds that I couldn't. HOWEVER... the next day, they got me out that bed early. Up and at'um. I have been walking ever since. Pain and all. I did not want to be back in the hospital for blood clots. The more I move the better I feel. It's been 8 days since. I may take an extra week off from work, maybe. So far I'm going back a week from today. Take care all and most of all God Bless you, be strong!
  21. Had my fill this afternoon with the same doctor. He was much more sympathetic this time around and apologized for what happened the last visit. He said he was very surprised that it happened as it did, because 99% of his patients that he puts 6cc in the AP Large band don't even feel restriction. He wanted to err on the side of caution and only put in 3cc today. He made he drink a cup of water, then had me sit in the office for 30 minutes to see how I was feeling. I'm going to stick with it for now because the nurse I spoke to has made it sound like it might be difficult to get in with a different doctor. I'm being cautiously optimistic at this point. I came home, had a bowl of soup and I feel no restriction whatsoever...so in 2 weeks or so I'll see about going back and getting more.
  22. Olwen - Please don't equate being tight with the ability to lose weight. I did this and was miserable for about 6-7 weeks. My doc's office really cautions people on their forum to try and leave the band a little looser rather than too tight. I was reading some recent statistics yesterday concerning the band and noticed that between year 2 to 3 with the band the average slippage rate goes to 10%. That is a huge concern to me. I have been tight and have been where I am now and still been able to loose weight effectively. Just because I can eat more comfortably doesn't mean I can eat more in volume. But I sure have more of a variety of foods I can tolerate. It's really important to be able to get your fluids in daily. That was also an issue when I was tight. It was difficult to drink 64 oz in a day. Now, no problem. I can't chug it, but I can take 3-4 medium size gulps with no issues. I am just really concerned with those who choose to keep their band tight. Because it is a really slippery slope in terms of taking chances with a slippage. Good luck to you in your journey!

    Second Fill

I got my second fill yesterday, one week after the first since the first didn't do anything. My doctor allows a bit of tweaking one week after a fill of the first one didn't do anything. I'm not at 6.0cc in my 10.0cc AP band. They said most people there are between 6.0cc and 8.0cc in this band. I'm on mushy until tomorrow afternoon so it's hard to tell if I have much restriction yet. I just ate one very very muchy scrambled egg though and it seems to have been more filling than I would expect so I'm hopeful! Even without restriction I've still been losing though so I'm fairly happy. I just look forward to being less hungry when sticking to the band diet. Has anyone else had a second fill or up to around 6.0cc's yet? Also I'd be curious to know how many calories a day you are consuming. I'm keeping my intake at or slightly below 1000 calories.
  24. I have to fly down the week surrounding Labor Day (visit my dad who's in the hospital), and wondered if anyone has ideas for places I can walk, or a pool I might swim in? Are there good restaurants for bandsters in the area?? I also have to try to plan what I can take on the plane...anyone with advice? I am assuming Protein drinks are a no-no because of the 3 oz thing?? Thank you! Nancy

    Post Op Visit

Well I went yesterday for my ten day post op and I was down 6 pounds since surgery on Nov 10th. He took the steri strips off and the incision sites look very good. I started my vitamins last night and he said I could start light cardio but not weights yet. I can't tell you how amazed I am at my whole body feeling better. I have lost around 44 pounds and the swelling in my knee has went down and they only time it hurts is when I get up after sleeping or sitting for a while. But once I get moving is feels good. Before I lost some of my weight my knee was constantly aching and swelled, who would of thought losing a little weight would make such a big difference? LOL... I go back on December 16th for another appointment and by then I will be on solid foods. I do not know if they will do a fill on that date he left that open to see how I am feeling with my hunger. But I do have to be on regular foods for at least a week before they will do a fill. Hubby's surgery is scheduled for January 4th and he is doing fantastic on his pre op diet. He has lost over his 10% and is going to try to lose as much as he can so surgery will go better for him. Well sorry so long. Have a great day all. Char
