    Diabetic Results

Hi KC. I was type II diabetic. I was only on medication, no insulin. I left the hospital no longer needing medication. My husband was also diabetic, on insulin and a few different meds. He had the bypass. He was able to also leave the hospital no longer needing insulin or meds. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

    Today. Was. Rough.

I can relate to this SO much! I am 13 days post op and avoided going to the movies for my first week because I was afraid I'd want popcorn so bad! Now my boyfriend and I have been 3 times this week and he hasn't gotten popcorn in support of me. Feels like a tiny victory bypassing the concession line ea ch time. 3. Upper GI barium swallow shows esophageal dysmotility and it also found a hiatal hernia that the endoscopy missed. I can't find out much about the esophogeal dysmotility googling but the radiologist said I am either going to need revision to bypass or nissen fundoplication and that the hernia will need repaired. Waiting now to see what my surgeon says.
  4. Anyone ever post on the lapband talk forum in the lapband complications section? Is it just me or do you get rudeness from people when you post about complications? Almost like whatever reason you are having problems it's your own fault? I have kept my mouth shut and not responded to the rude ones but its getting old and I'm finding that each time it happens I want to get downright nasty back!

    Anyone having surgery in November?

Hi! My surgery date is Nov 10th. I'm a little nervous because I'm having my lapband removed, then getting the gastric bypass done. I'm currently on the pre-op diet, but not losing anything. My metabolism is totally screwed! Looking forward to success with the gastric bypass. Any suggestions for someone like me who's allergic to whey protein & whey protein isolate products? It's been tough, and I think post op will be challenging as well.

    Talk about losing motivation...

@@mcplu28 A little perspective: You lost 42 (43?) lbs in 3 months on your own. I HAD THE SLEEVE DONE, and I lost 52 in 3 mos...to me, that means you're kicking ass Our docs will do the sleeve on very high BMI patients and then revise to bypass or DS when they've lost some of the weight. Do get a second opinion, for your own peace of mind if nothing else. Congratulations on your amazing results so far...don't give up and don't get discouraged. You're on the road to saving your own life <3

    Pre surgery fears

I wasn’t worried during the whole three year process of trying to get it done. A week before my surgery I lost my mind and was all of a sudden scared that I might die in surgery(literally hit me like a brick wall). My mom(who also had gastric bypass had the same dr as me) told me it’s like taking a bandaid off for them. I even looked up the chances of death(I thought it was stupid of me but it oddly made me feel better) and you have a higher chance of dying from gallbladder or hip surgery. I was so scared I even watched a video of the surgery being performed to see what might go wrong. My mom said I was crazy but they did it with ease and it made me feel better 😂
  9. Im kinda think me getting the lap band instead of the gastric bypass for many reasons! The main reason is because I had it done at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit MI and there service and appointment scheduling is horrible. I didnt get my 2nd week checkup until my 6th week out of surgery. My doctor didnt give me a fill during surgery. My first fill was scheduled for September 18th and they cancelled it and moved it to October the 2nd. So instead of getting a fill 6 weeks out of surgery i wont be getting mine until Im 13 weeks out of surgery. I have already hit a pataue and if I could loose the weight on my own then I wouldnt have gotten the surgery. My surgery was July 13. I was 299 and im 269 now. I think if i would have just gotten the bypass then I wouldnt have to worry about appt. being canceled for fills.
  10. there's a new procedure call ROSE for people who has had the RNY years ago with weight gain.. I don't know if that's what they are going to do for your friend. ROSE, which stands for Restorative Obesity Surgery, Endolumenal, is a new, safer, incisionless, gastric bypass revision. It is not a primary method of weight loss surgery, but a follow-up procedure that is specifically designed for gastric bypass patients with weight regain. The ROSE procedure is indicated for gastric bypass patients who were initially successful in losing the excess weight but are now regaining some of the lost weight because the stomach and stoma have stretched out and no longer effectively control hunger and food intake.
  11. I had a roux-en-Y gastric bypass done in 2012 and am currently in hospital suffering from acute nerve pain, in my groin and legs and also tingling in my feet. I have had a CT scan, ultrasound and MRI and so far they cannot find a cause. My research has brought me to peripheral neuropathy or polyneuropathy, apparently in the USA this is common after weight loss surgery, particularly RNY. Has anyone has anything like this happen to them? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Weight Gain at Week 3-5- Failing at WLS

Hi guys, I have been a silent lurker for a while. I got my surgery on July 2nd. 2018. I am 33 years old, 4 feet eleven inches tall. Mother of 2. On the day of surgery I was 195. By the second week I was at 180. It has now been 1 month since the surgery and I have gained 5 lbs, lost 5 lbs, gained 2, lost 2, gained 4. It is frustrating because I got into a debt that I did not need to be able to finance this surgery. By the way, I had gastric sleeve in Miami but I don't live there and I also don't have insurance so seeing a doc is difficult. I track all I eat through MyFitnessPal. I eat things low in sodium, no sugar or at least low in sugar ( I am a coconut water addict) and since the surgery water is bleh . I am extremely careful about what I eat. I cook at home. I make sure I meet my protein goals. I am used to eating healthy and more so now since the surgery. It's frustrating to know that I got into this massive debt and I'm not losing weight. We know a ton of people that have done gastric sleeve or bypass and bands and everyone has lost weight incredibly- here I come spending money I didn't have with a surgery that isn't doing anything for me. Bowel movements are nightmare. Since the surgery I can't unless I drink some slimming tea nothing has been done by my body naturally. If I trust my body to do its thing it wont. Ugh. For the past week I been drinking milk of magnesia and that works but it's so unpleasant. It's sad because my mom didn't want me to get in the debt and I was so sure that I would lose the weight. People are around me were rooting for me to lose weight. So it sucks because people ask "Hey how is the weight loss, you should have dropped like 30 lbs or more by now" and I be like "Naw, fam. I GAINED 5" It sucks to disappoint. I don't know what to do. I give up.

    Who Were You Before Vsg?

i used to be a lapband patient that had an unknown slipped band. i was losing so much weight that i looked sick but i was obsessed with losing weight. i vomitted multiple times a day but i thought i was bulimic. i weighed a skeletal 116 pounds before i decided to get my band checked. when they found the slip they took all the fluid out and told me to EAT. and eat i did! i gained 30 pounds in 2 months before deciding to revise to the sleeve. i basically feel like i have the same restriction with the sleeve as i did with the band BUT i no longer throw up. i know now i'm not bulimic, just a person with a slipped band. i'm so much happier now being able to eat and not worry how close i am to a bathroom!

When did you go back to work?

My bypass was in December and I'm still out of work. My job requires medical clearance from a federal agency after a 2 month post-op wait. Paperwork submitted, but the bureaucratic review will take another 8 to 12 weeks. Got a part-time job in the meantime and trying to keep expenses minimized. Surgery was worth it, but the financial hit has been BIG.
  15. I used premier after my sleeve surgery but find my stomach won’t tolerate them after my recent revision to bypass. I highly recommend trying these samples. https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/syntrax-nectar-protein-powder-trial-sizes-17-flavors-to-choose-from?vec=eyJ2ZVRwIjoiRk9SVU0iLCJ2clRwIjoiTU9TVF9QT1BVTEFSIiwidnJJcCI6IjEifQ%3D%3D my favorite is the chocolate truffle and I tolerate them very well. I would be Leary of a one per day vitamin. Iron and calcium will counteract each other in certain doses. Also check with your team as they may require you to start on chewables. I take the bariatric fusion. Bottle says take 4 per day but my dr assures me that if I take two twice per day I will get the same results. I like that I don’t need any extra d3, iron or calcium with these. good luck!
  16. Both options are great. Welcome! Sleeves are certainly more affordable and easier to handle with current lifestyle. Gastric bypass uses both restrictive and mal- Absorption techniques to help you lose weight Read, research and ask questions. Hit me up privately if you have more in depth questions. I researched for 8 months LOL

    Craving! Help!

Seriously??? What do you think a craving is?But they're strong just the same. And while I'm bypass not sleeve, whoever said 8 months was the magic number before you get cravings? Omg people. Get a clue. Is there some "magic button" that is switched at EXACTLY 8 months? Lmfao Oh wait- I see you're preop and just joined today.... So you're either a lurker or a newbie who knows it all

    Surgery Failure

Here's my concern with what you just said. If it says 25 carbs, you will drink it. But what about carbs in other things? Are you staying below your allotted carb count for the entire day, or are you counting the carbs based on each individual item and not the entire day as a whole? Your allotted carbs for the entire day are much lower than they were pre-surgery, so make sure you're paying attention to that and staying at or below your carb amount for the whole day. For me, I can't go above 50 carbs for the whole day, but I tend to stay at around 30 for the day. You have to watch the protein, fat, carb, and calorie intake now. My nutritionist said my allowable numbers are: Calories - no more than 500 calories per day (based on being where you're at in the process)m carbs: 50 or less, fat: 50 or less, and protein: 60-90g. I just had my revision, so I'll have to start my process over once I'm done with all liquids, but given the guidelines, there's no way I would ever drink anything that was 15, 20, or 25 carbs per serving.
  19. I had my revision on 6/30/15 and they put a pressure dressing over my former port site to prevent this. It's just a clear tagaderm dressing over sterile cotton balls that keep pressure on the site so no fluid will form in that pocket that your port was in. I was told to leave it on until my two week checkup but if it fell off before that was ok. I showered every day and it didnt fall off until my appointment day and only because that was the first time I'd worn jeans since my surgery. I don't know if I could have handled what you guys went. Happy to hear that a lot of you have stopped having drainage.
  20. I'm not sure which book the other person was referring to, but I found the book, "Weight Loss Surgery with the Adjustable Gastric Band" to be a life-saver. It is written by Dr. Robert W. Sewell and Linda Rohrbough and was published last year. I like it a lot better than the "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" that my psychologist recommended at my first appointment with him. The book by Dr. Sewell is all about bands, while the other book is about bands and gastric bypass. My sister, who I love dearly, was banded four years ago. She went from 315 pounds to about 185 and I am so proud of her. I was banded two weeks ago, and I have more to lose than my sister. While the pre-op diet and post-op diets are restricted due to sutures healing and gradually adding back foods, your sister will be able to eat most things as long as they don't bother her. Some people love shrimp and have no problems, while others do have problems. It's like that about everything. Tell her to check out Dr. Sewell's book.....I highly recommend it. P.S. What a very supportive force you are going to be during her surgery and recovery. She is a lucky girl!
  21. You're not alone. I hate the band and wish I had gotten a bypass or a sleeve.

Morbidly Obese Toddler Undergoes Gastric Bypass Surgery

So did he have gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy? The story states both procedures. Just curious to know which one. I've heard of the sleeve being introduced at the pediatric level, albeit not quite this young, but this could be a normal procedure to help curb obesity specifically in the US.

    On My Way! Home!

awesome... how are you feeling? My doctor was very clear on the fact that I do not use a straw. I see in you pic. that you are sipping liquids which is good but from a straw is a no-no. From what I understand a straw allows a lot more air in. I was a big soda drinker with a straw because a straw is a good thing on NON - RNY patients because it bypasses your teeth and your teeth don't get stained as much. I do miss my straw You will be so happy to get home and relax.. the worst is over with !!!

    Calcium Supplements

I've been reading about this since I had a 6x heart bypass 6 years ago I am concerned about how much Calcium I should take this will be a discussion I have at my next visit with my heart doctor and nutritionist.

    I think I'm convinced....

Ditto what Susan said. I am band to sleeve revision too and like all the others would not recommend it now. VSG is great!
