QueenOfTheTamazons replied to mbuczkowski's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to look at more than just the regain percentages. They dont give the whole picture. Even a "failure" of 25% regain is still a 75% loss which can make a huge difference in some ones life. For me thats going from 385 to 235. You also need to consider how each surgery fits into your life. I went with the sleeve because 1) the rny can lead to dumping and diarrhea. Having already lived with chronic diarrhea for 13 years, I didnt want to "double down" in that area 2) I was worried about the malnutrtion aspect of the rny 3) Being relatively young, I considering which surgery would be easier to live with for the next 40+ years Rny and DS might lose weight faster but at the 5 year mark the weight loss between the 3 is very similar. Also, I have the option to revise the VSG to a DS if weight loss becomes a problem. Finally, the thought of an unused stomach just chilling in there creeped me out. HW 385 SW 359 CW 335 (50lbs down!) I also have the MTHFR mutation. I had revision surgery on 10/18/16 and had to use Lovenox shots for 14 days after surgery. My hematologist was on board with the surgery. He felt that I would be better off to have surgery than carry all the extra weight. Since MTHFR can cause an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, it was a reasonable decision. I revised to RNY from VSG because of severe reflux. I'm 4 months post op. I eat berries every now and then, but I really can't eat any fruit. All fruit makes my heart beat like it's pounding out of my chest and I feel very sick. My surgeon said that that reaction should mellow with time, but at this point, I'd rather avoid the fruit than suffer the consequences.

Its been a long time since I have checked in - as usual Looks like there havent been a lot of folks responding lately on this thread but thought I would give you guys an update. As it turns out I have been having some ongoing problems that will require som more surgery. I have always had terrible gerd prior to and it seemed to get worse after the sugery. My lucky husband had his resolve completely after his vsg and hernia repair. I started seeing another bariatric doc last year, as my doc had moved to another practice and we moved as well. To make a very long story shorter - and the number of tests I've had done dwarf the first surgery - I will be having revision surgery on 11/22/16 - 11 days from now. I have a significant hiatal hernia, a stricture, and various other sundry things that will be repaired - gallbladder out and removal of stray sutures (which is goofy but that's what the photos after the last egd) My new surgeon is going to revise my sleeve a traditional Duodenal Switch. I had gained back about 30 lbs from my lowest weight. And it took just about a year to recover from the total knee replacement - what a nightmare that is, but at least I can walk again. Hopefully the hips and back wont hurt as much soon. Wishing everyone well and hope everyone is happy and healthy

The stricture or stenosis is where the stomach attaches to the intentions. I was told it was more common after band to bypass revisions. The dr office also told me it was normal and to keep drinking liquids. I did this until I almost fainted. If in doubt do not wait. My stricture was almost closed and did not show up on cat scan good luck

Does anyone purposely vary their caloric intake?
Sai replied to QueenOfTheTamazons's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 10 weeks post-op revision to sleeve, after the 5th week, I've been slowly ramping up. My program wanted my goal to be between 800 to 1200 cal/day. Some days I eat 800, other days I eat 1200. I don't do it intentionally though. Some days I'm just not hungry, other days I am. Other than the first few weeks (lost a lot of Water weight the 3rd and 4th week), if I'm under 1000, I still lose but my weight loss slows down to a crawl. -
Feel like I'm not accomplishing anything
stacyrg2 replied to Asmundson69's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Hammer_Down I love this analogy! There is no way a 47 gain in 3 months would be considered slow. Similarly, I don't understand how anyone could consider a 47 lb loss in 3 months slow. If surgeons are placing unrealistic expectations on their patients, they need to stop. If patients have unrealistic expectations and somehow think they're going to wake up from surgery thin, that needs to stop too. As far as the stall, you've lost almost 50 lbs. Your body needs time to adjust to the loss and settle in. Taking photos is a great idea. So is taking measurements since it's likely that you're losing inches even if you're not losing lbs. For example, I'm 4 months post revision to RNY and 2 lbs from goal. I keep gaining and losing the same 2 lbs, yet my clothes are once again falling off me. I may not be losing any weight, but I must be losing inches/my body must be adapting, otherwise everything would be the same. To the OP, I hope you listen to the smart vets on this site and ratchet down your expectations a bit. You're likely to go through many more slow loss periods or actual stalls and if you don't make peace with that, you'll likely be unhappy with the process. -
Has anyone received a denial just for Band Removal?
IMissVegas replied to kristenmh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
BCBS won't pay for my band removal even though I have a lot of port site pain. Of course the surgeon wants to do a revision, but they've denied it twice. I plan to appeal. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App -
Denied again and surgeon's office is silent
IMissVegas posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
BCBS denied my lapband removal and revision to sleeve again. I received a letter saying that since my first bariatric surgery didn't get results, they wouldn't pay for a new one. This is despite the fact that I'm down 80 lbs and am in pain at the port site. To make things worse, the Nicholson Clinic seems to have forgotten me. I have to email and ask for a status or I never hear from them. Since I've met my OOP for the year, I met with an orthopedic surgeon and am having knee surgery on both knees next week. That way, I can exercise again. I feel that BCBS denied me because I've met my deductible and OOP and they don't want to pay for it. So now they can pay to fix my knees. Yes, I'm angry. What am I supposed to do about the port pain? Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App -
What do you wish someone had told you BEFORE your surgery?
towrecovery replied to switch2lose's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
3 things. 1) the sensations of having to defecate and gas are not the same as before the surgery. its harder to tell them apart. 2) the first night at home when you are in so much pain that you are about to go to the emergency room, go take a #2. 3) If you are having a revision from the band to the Switch, be prepared for them to only remove the band and do the switch and not do the sleeve portion. My second sergery for the sleeve portion is December 2nd. -
He is the BEST. His clinic is the BEST. Friend him on FB and you can watch live surgeries on Friday. I used him for my LapBand several years ago, but couldn't afford him for my sleeve revision or I would have gone there!!!

I don't know about not losing as much but most doctors will warn their revision patients that they will lose more slowly. We don't get the rapid "honeymoon" period drop that many others do first time. I figure it is because our bodies have been there done that and have it figured out. I knew that going into this so I have been religious about following low carb eating and measuring everything and logging every piece of food that goes in and trying my best to get to 10,000 steps so that I can do the best I can to outfox my body. My goal is still the same as my lowest maintenance weight when the band was working.

I had revision also. I went from treacherous band to wonderful RNY. I have gone from 255 to 179. My surgery was 3/7. Initially (first 2 or 3 weeks was rapid) then my first stall...then slllooowwwllllyyy from there. For instance 2 weeks ago I was 283. I pretty much can eat anything. I rarely, rarely have mild dumping syndrome. I just eat a lot less. My practitioners are pleased, and feel as though I am eating in a way that can be maintained for life. My HW was 265. My first goal was 285- DONE!! Next goal 265- on my way!! After that we will see. I dream of 150 being the sweet spot!! But I already am so much happier, and feel amazing!! It is slower with revision, our bodies are already used to this , up and down, near starvation state, so it takes longer!! As long as we keep losing, that is what is important!! I had my revision done about a 5 HR drive away. Was able to do everything remotely to prep through my pcp. My surgeon sent her all the pre-op testing instructions for what needed to be done. I spoke to the nurse and dietician on the phone. They mailed me the Optifast with instructions on when to start. I could just call or email with questions. Stayed in a hotel the night before surgery and met my surgeon right before surgery. 2 nights in the clinic. They ask that you stay in town for 4 days afterwards, but I think that is mainly for the ones flying in because the issues you can have with altitudes if you still have gas in your system, my docs said I was fine to go home after surgery...just stop for frequent breaks to walk. I had a scheduled 1 month call with the dietician, and another at 3 months. They sent my pcp the instructions on what blood tests to do at what intervals. She also has to sent them the results and my weight for their records. Been good

Definitely do your research. I just had a revision (self pay). It was done in one procedure. I wanted bypass so this is what the surgeon told me. If there isn't a lot of scar tissue he can do a bypass. Scar tissue means a sleeve (because they can work around the scar tissue. Erosion of the band means it comes out and they send you home. You can possibly come 6 or so months later and try a revision. A revision is considerably higher risk...you want a surgeon who is experienced with revisions. Ask how many revisions they have done. When I was interviewing doctors the one I chose had done over 250 of them. He said he can tell just looking at the tissue whether it will hold the staples or not...that stuff comes without experience. One of the surgeons I spoke to had done 2 revisions. 2! Yep, I'm happy I chose the one I chose. It was important to me to have it done in one procedure...it means my pouch is slightly larger than they normally make, because the band stretches it out. But he thinks it'll work well for me. I had mine done in Montreal...I paid 23k canadian...so that's like $10 USD now right

I had a revision from a VBG/SR from 16 years ago. Back then I lost 90 pounds and kept it off about 4 years. This time (surgery was 10/24) I had RNY and am down 27 pounds as of Monday. I had the RNY because my silastic ring from my previous surgery was migrating upward and causing choking issues. I wasn't in the best frame of mind and definitely not the best health this time around. I mainly have head hunger. I was sent home with a fork - tender diet. I've definitely been cheating (i.e. had a fun - sized bag of Cheetoes, had a piece of Halloween candy less than 5 grams) so I bought baked Cheetoes and sugar free hard candy trying to curb this. I feel like I'm failing before I start. I have really bad fibro and am extremely exhausted almost every day. I lost my insurance Nov 1st. I am working on that. I go to a support group once a month, but they don't want to be friends really. I need more than a monthly meeting. Help? Sent from my SM-N900T using the BariatricPal App

Seriously....this heart burn every single night
stacyrg2 replied to katragina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Severe heartburn is a recognized side effect of VSG. I was forced to revise to bypass to cure my heartburn. I would call your surgeon and see if they can put you on a different PPI. You may need to try different medication combinations to find one that gives you some relief. Also, try to drink something other than plain Water. Plain water gave me horrible heartburn. You need to drink because dehydration won't help you at all. In fact, it will make you feel worse. Good luck! -
Although Alcohol is frowned upon due to lack of nutritional value, empty calories, sugar content etc. You have to gage it for yourself. Is it worth it? Are you following your plan? What will your limitations be? This could turn into a regular thing and that's where it can start to get fuzzy. My personal experience I am a little over 4 months myself. I do drink occasional cocktails. During the summer MY husband and I were going out approx. 3 nights a week. Alcohol would sometimes be involved. I explained to him I can't drink like that but I don't mind joining you for a drink just understand that I'm concerned how the calories affect my weight loss. If I were dating, I'd just say, I'm trying to lose a few lbs so I'm trying to chill on the drinking for now. I exercise 4 days a week. 1 hour. I follow my plan as best as I can. Sometimes I don't eat enough but I'm working on it. If I have plans to go out that day, or later I adjust my eating to accommodate a potential drink. If I'm having a bad week plan wise-- I don't drink. It is a very fine balance and I'm very disciplined. I've not experienced any stalls since surgery. If I felt like it slowed down my weight or caused me to stall I would not do it. On the other hand, I have a friend who had the sleeve. She has stayed within 10 lbs of her goal weight for 4 years. I feel that she drinks often. Maybe because I'm not a big drinker. She goes out at least 3-4 nights a week and drinks 2-3 cocktails each time. Mind you she had to have a revision because drinking stalled her weight loss after the first surgery. So think about that. It's not a good idea... WLS patients tend to give up one vice for another. If you can be sensible about it I don't see it being a problem. Just know that by you being on the single scene... the opportunity may present itself far more often in the months to come. I'm a married old hag so I don't go out much-- not as many opportunities to get in trouble.

Maybe it is just me, but I look for lap band support under the lap band support group.... one of the FEW places some of us can talk band stuff... now it is revision talk...?? I know some of us are still here working hard on our personal program! Please say what works for you with the band... Protein drink and bars are a good thing for me. And band appt scheduled. Ok water and exercise

I chose VSG in May, 2014. I had no reflux, no diabetes and no other conditions that would have pointed me towards RNY. After a discussion with my surgeon, we decided that I would do well with a restrictive only procedure. And I did, losing 130 lbs. 8 months after my surgery I started experiencing significant reflux. I had my gallbladder removed in the hopes it would help with my acid issue (I had gallstones so removal was indicated). It did not. My reflux got significantly worse and no amount of medication would help my problem (I tried every PPI on the market). I revised to RNY on 7/1/16. I can't begin to tell you what to do, but knowing what I know now, if I had any issue with acid, or had been diagnosed with reflux or GERD prior to surgery, I would never have had VSG. The acid caused damage to my esophagus and hindered my ability to swallow. While that all may resolve (it's only been 4 months since my revision), there's a chance that it might not. I was a seriously happy sleever and believe that it is on par with RNY. You can lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off. However, if I had acid before surgery, I would have selected RNY.

I was sleeved Sept 19 2016 and all I lost was 19 pounds. This was a revision from having that horrible lap-band. Is it true it will take longer for people who have revisions of a lap-band to a sleeve to lose less weight? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Drinking sodas
sunnydeeliteful replied to ericacast69's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My surgery revision from band to bypass is Dec 1st. I drank soda after my band and screwed up my pouch and was able to eat too much. My nut and my Dr say no soda ever again after bypass. It's no biggie for me I gave up soda 2 years ago and muchbprefer crystal light and Water. I'm not giving up my restriction again. Just my 2 cents Sent from my SM-G550T1 using the BariatricPal App -
Talk about losing motivation...
ShelterDog64 replied to mcplu28's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@mcplu28 A little perspective: You lost 42 (43?) lbs in 3 months on your own. I HAD THE SLEEVE DONE, and I lost 52 in 3 mos...to me, that means you're kicking ass Our docs will do the sleeve on very high BMI patients and then revise to bypass or DS when they've lost some of the weight. Do get a second opinion, for your own peace of mind if nothing else. Congratulations on your amazing results so far...don't give up and don't get discouraged.
