here's something to keep in mind. There's a big difference between a bypass and a sleeve. We do not have a pouch. Our stomach has hadthe fundis removed. The actual length of the stomach is no different than before surgery only the width. An NG tube wouldn't generally do anything to the sleeve.

I had my bypass surgery on 7/29. It went so well, I couldn't believe how fortunate I was. Nothing like I was expecting as far as recovery. The first week was a breeze. So much so that this week my mind has taken over and freaked me out a little. I guess it just seemed too good to be true, so I worried needlessly. I did start feeling a bit of nausea when trying to get in protein and fluids the last 2 days. But, I saw the nurse today and she reassured me that everything I'm feeling is normal and part of healing. Nausea isn't unbearable and seems like only in the morning for some reason. Little pain at incision sites and in my belly, but nothing I'm even taking meds for. All in all, it has been a success! Down 20lbs from the beginning. About 10 lbs pre op and 10 post. Losing about a pound a day right now. I'll take it! Not feeling hunger is the best part. I can see someone with pizza, think I want some for a minute, then think nah. Hope that holds up :-) it helps that I've moved on to smooth foods and not just liquid. Can't wait to have real food though!! Best of luck to you all!!

I received a gastric sleeve back in June of 2016 so I'm coming up on my 5 year anniversary. I at one time weighed nearly 500 pounds and got the surgery at 380 as I lost 120 pounds on my own prior to surgery. I was down all the way to 160 pounds. My doctor even said I could stand to gain a few pounds. Problem is, I gained more than a few. I currently weigh about 330 pounds now. I have developed a hernia that will probably need to be surgically repaired. Given that, I'm considering a revision. Can a hernia be repaired while doing a revision? Has anyone gone from a sleeve to bypass? What are the differences you experienced with a sleeve vs bypass? I will also add I'm in the process of seeing a psychiatrist. I've learned I have social anxiety and the weight loss wasn't a cure for that anxiety. I'm almost looking at it as a do over and continuing therapy after surgery. Anybody have success doing a revision?

Considering revision
Coexister replied to Revisionist's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision from sleeve to a bypass and a hiatal hernia repair at the same time and so "yes" they repair hernia's at the same time. In fact I had the initial hernia repair while having the sleeve which failed and had to be repaired during the bypass - doing great after bypass. I lost more weight after the bypass as the body doesn't absorb as much and it is definitely a different "feel" than the sleeve was. The restriction is completely different for me. Foods again changed in flavor and things I liked after the sleeve, I no longer like after bypass. I am not one on those that throw up from overeating and am able to tolerate everything and so I have to be careful and "watch what I eat". The experience is different for everyone. If I eat too much it is more painful then it was with the sleeve and I don't know if it is because of the hernia repair that I can't throw up but it hurts extremely hard. Recovery seemed easier and maybe it's because I had been through it before? Fluids are much easier for me to drink. I too have an anxiety disorder and no the surgery does not fix that. I work with a psychologist continuously on my issues for the anxiety along with other issues I am dealing with and so yes you will need to continue therapy. Good luck in your journey. You got this! -
I am having a band to sleeve revision on 8/9/11. The band has never really worked for me. I could never get to the "sweet spot" that everyone talks about. I have been banded since 2007 and have lost maybe 10 lbs. I still vomit if when I eat some healthy foods, but boy, I can down a bag of cookies or chips. I felt like I had two stomachs. One on top that hurt and where things got stuck and then one on the bottom that was starving all of the time. I felt so guilty because I've known other people who were banded and have had moderate to good success. My PCP told me one time that I was "eating around the band". Maybe I was, but I feel like I gave it my best shot. I still worry about the sleeve because I know it is another restrictive procedure. I just hope that I don't feel that horrible pain that I did with the band.

I'm an OR nurse in a large Boston OR that also does bariatric surgery. I have been and OR nurse for 25 years and I have to tell you that I can probably count on two hand the amount of times someone died from general anesthesia. It is extremely rare unless you are a very sick individual. It is a myth perpetuated by TV,the movies and people's fears that "I won't wake up!" I have assisted tens of thousands of surgeries and am happy to be having general anesthesia for a lapband in the future. The biggest risks of surgery are not the anesthesia but the postop course which for a lap-band is very safe compared to gastric bypass which holds the bigger risks. Postop they have to watch for blood clots, pulmonary embolism and infection.

exactly my point! anyone who has made the decision to get the band has already endured far more than some mindless twit can burden them with. I come from great genetics on both sides of my family, longevity is phenominal. At 41 I still have both Grandmothers alive. One of my grandfather's as well as a Greatgrandfather lived to past 95. Strange as it may be, we have on both sides of my family a tendancy to be very overweight. My one Grandmother @ 96 is only 4'10 but still overweight after being very obeese her whole life, same as my grandfather and both my parents. Cheat? I think not, I think it's just the will to have a better life and the guts to allow modern medicine and science to help play a part. My Mother had the Gastric bypass at age 59. She has lost 160lbs and now @ age 64 enjoy's a lifestyle that has eluded her for 40 years. My father who is also obeese, does not understand why I had the surgery however he is supportive of my choice to do so. Do not allow negitive people to bring you down, they are toxic. Anyone who truly cares for you without a hidden agenda will be supportivef your decisicion to live a better life on your own terms. To borrow a phrase I learned from my stepfather while he battled cancer "It's not about living, it's about the quality of my life". I choose to use modern technology as a way to help improve my life and anyone who say's any different can get outta my way. I know there will be many battle's fought, but I have already won the first couple. I've been a fighter all my life, now I am just fighting to improve it. Oh yea, about that Yamaha don't worry, I had a couple of them back when I was a kid. It's not what you ride so much the fact that you ride. Good luck with your surgery and keep it real, Doc.

I too am having trouble sticking to the diet plan. It is soooo hard! I have dealt with a lot of tough things but fighting that urge to eat food you love and and only eating veggies, lean protien and minimal carbs is the worst! Highland is great, I had a child there too, and two relatives who had bypass surgery, all good experiences. There will always be bad nurses just like really good ones too where ever you go, just speak up! Good luck!

4 days post-op (bypass)
miss_smiles replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL agreed fellow New Yorker!! Some people just don't know how to answer the question. And ironically enough, although I do not 100% the answer to your question, I'm having my surgery next week for a revision sleeve to bypass. maybe we can stay in touch?! What i can tell you though, is when i had the sleeve I could barely drink the recommended 64oz daily. I would try to sip every 10 minutes but it was soooo uncomfortable. It would take me an entire day like this to even hit my fluid intake. -
Hey fellow bypassers. My name is Bridgette, and I have been on an emotional journey which started a year ago. I weigh right now at 325. Which is five pounds heavier than I did on the surgery date from which I figured was from gas So my surgeon couldnt do it, too much fat in my abdominal cavity, closed me up and left. my mom wants to sue for reasons that we are broke, we told him if he didnt think he could or wouldnt then dont and he did. We did a bunch of test, including ultrasounds Any who getting off track, you can find more about that in theforum titled aborted. Any who, I met with a Dr. Nowzaradan, and he gave me a week to loose 5-20 pounds.... does this mean he is gonna take a chance on me?

Reactive hypoglycemia
Peach55 replied to Jessibird's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too am experiencing severe episodes of reactive hypoglycemia. I’ve been hospitalized 3 times in the last 2 months. My sugar drops rapidly. It’ll go from 60 to 37 in minutes. Assigned to an endocrinologist team my last hospitalization and have now been prescribed Acarbose & a told to eat 6 small meals, high protein some fat & no more than 30 grams of carbs each meal. Just started med yesterday and concentrating very hard on following diet. It’s basically the keto & I could stand to loose about 10-15 lbs so I’m eager to try this. I’m wearing a freestyle glucosemeter (no pricking) to help track sugar & bump it up before I start feeling the symptoms. I’m also carrying glucose tablets to bump it up quickly. I have an appointment next week with endo to discuss progress & decide if anything additional or different needs to be done. I pray that something can be done because living with this has turned my life upside down. I’m afraid to drive long distances; lots of confusion; no interest in usual activities and also depression has set in. I feel awful that I’ve put my family through this worry simply because I chose to have the surgery. But I would have it all over again if given the choice of being very unhealthy & obese and my life as it is now. I just have to remember that and I’ll get through this! Sorry for being long winded. I just felt if anyone would understand my feelings it would be my fellow bypass friends. Take care, I’ll keep all posted as I go thru this. 😊 -
Thanks Ms. sss - it certainly is a tough call. I paid $16,000 in 2009 for the lap band that is now being taken out. MGB will be an additional $19,000. Believe me, I am all for investing in myself but its a hard pill to swallow if it is only for another 5-10 years. The trend seems to be after a certain amount of time, people are following low cal, exercise, feel like they are starving themselves and nothing is happening. Weirdly enough, weight gain is my least worry. Sure, it will frustrate me, but any medical complications scare the bejesus out of me! I'm hearing ulcers and yet more revisions? I'm 50 now; I don't really want to be having surgeries in my 60's and 70's when the risks become greater. My surgeon/clinic provides support etc for 5 years. I think that says a lot as well. Its not lifetime. One side of me says, just do it - you have read enough to know it will help you stay on a healthy lifestyle. And the other says, get a personal trainer and have him/her weigh you in 3 days/week to be accountable. I don't have to make the decision today. I am grateful for site's like these that can assist in decision making. Back in 2009 there wasnt much support for the lap band.

Best Calcium chews after bypass surgery
Michele 2021 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone I’m curious to know what everyone is using for calcium supplements after having gastric bypass surgery. I am three months postop doing very well but had been using Caltrate chews until they recently discontinued them after further research I found that the calcium carbonate was not a good choice and that the calcium citrate is recommended so I ordered some chewables on the BariatricPal website my dietitian said I will never be able to take calcium in the capsule form again after a bypass and I’m curious if others were told the same thing. I understand we cannot take any kind of calcium gummy’s either. These calcium chews are the way too expensive to keep purchasing long term so I hope in the future to be able to find something much cheaper and would love to hear others feedback on the subject thanks in advance!! -

What type of B12 Vitamin do you take and how often? Did you have a RNY gastric bypass surgery? -
the meetings are every second wednesday of the month at 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm in the hospital cafeteria. I like Dr. Dock but I haven't known him long. I work out at the Beavercreek YMCA. I am just getting started there, I do mostly water workouts. The whirlpool is nice too! I am due for my first fill on Dec. 1st. I had to postpone it from earlier this month due to my father having a heart attack and triple bypass surgery. He is home now and is doing well so I will try to get back into a routine.

I've prided myself on losing 100 lbs eating whatever I want, just a few bites. Well, after my band to sleeve revision 4 mths ago, I've only lost 22 lbs (knew I'd lose slower, started at 174). So I guess I'm gunna have to reevaluate my intake. Counting carbs would be miserable. I was on Atkins induction for 4 weeks last Feb. I would've killed my mom for a cookie I think counting calories would be a better choice for me. Occasionally I count on myfitnesspal and I'm usually under 1200. Guess I hafta stay under 1000 to take off the last 20 lbs. Those last 20 r the hardest of all. for sure. My goal is to maintain until after the holidays. Then I will take it seriously and lose the last 20. Hubby gained 40 lbs over the last 8 mths or so and he's doing the same thing (no, he hasn't had wls, just does Atkins).

*MALE ONLY* How long did it take you to get your approval from insurance?
NoMoBand replied to illailla's topic in The Guys’ Room
My paperwork was submitted early on a Tuesday morning, I had my approval by that afternoon. I couldn't believe it! I guess it all depends on the work load. I should mention that mine was a very unexpected revision. I didn't have to go through any of the hoops that one normally goes through because I already had a lap band. I was lucky because some insurance companies require that you go through all the consults and evaluation from the beginning. -

Many hbariatric dr are not performing the lapband anymore. And those who had the lapband with little or no success are doing a revision to the sleeve. -
