  1. You already said that emotional/stress eating seems to be the real culprit. Why not working from there? Sooner or later you will give in into the real yummy stuff instead of snacking on the lowcarb/lowfat/highprotein/keto/lowcalorie/whatever godawful substitutes that are available nowadays. What deems a healthy snack depends on the one who's recommending it. However, all the healthy snacks and food and back-to-basics in the world won't keep you from regaining in the long run if you can't stop the stress eating because "life will happen" again... and again... and again.

    Carbs yes or no

yeah, in MY experience, going keto/low-carb is very effective for losing weight rapidly in a relatively short amount of time. BUT...maintaining this lifestyle long term is challenging for most (not all, but MOST) The problem with us as a community has always been KEEPING the weight OFF (i mean how many times in the past have we lost a bunch of weight only to gain it back, and sometimes plus more) So when most (not all!) get to the keto/low-carb burnout phase, or just slowly let things slide, there needs to be another plan in place to maintain one's current weight and usually thats just finding your own balance of calories and activity level...and make that your lifestyle. P.S. not to say that Keto/low-carb is not an unattainable lifestyle choice. i have several friends who have done this for many years (and one who's been at it for over 20 years!) ...interestingly enough none of whom have ever been obese...not sure if there is a correlation there...
  3. Also...both of these meals are heavy on the meat for me...and are more rare. The diet I follow is more like the Mayo Clinic Diet. Lots of whole grains, beans, legumes. Tons of veggies and fruits. Much less meat. I don't like Keto. I know most bariatric patients follow keto for rapid weight loss and I did a lot of research to find a group that had different ideas. We still have a protein goal of 60-80g per day....but my group works with those of us who like to include more plant based proteins, fresh produce and whole grains. We eat a lot of carbs. I say that and people freak out. LOL. But it's true. What we don't eat...are refined carbs. Anything high glycemic is a no-go with the exception of natural fructose in whole fruits. Exercise is a key part of my plan.

    Daily Nutritional Percentage Goals

I started eating meats in my "soft foods" stage, which was week 4 or 5 (week 5 if you are sleeve). Now, I will say that I only ate VERY tender meat with some type of sauce or gravy. I ate rotisserie chicken and lean ground beef. I eat cheese a lot now. Some people might think that cheese has too much fat, but my NUT believes in a healthy regimen of fat in your diet. I take the KETO approach when eating mostly.
  5. @@ChunkyChicTrying I really disagree with all these you are on a diet and you have to watch what you eat for the rest of your life, people posting in your thread. I feel like that the kind of attitude that sets people up for failure. If you feel like you are on a diet forever, you will be willing to cheat and worse. I completely changed my attitude towards food. I don't eat my feelings. I don't reward myself with food (lipstick is a far better reward). If I am stressed I go for a walk or do jumping jacks. I eat in a way that I find enjoyable and do not at all feel deprived (keto) and it is a way of life not a diet. I can eat anywhere, and make easy choices. If for some reason I eat off plan it is a one time thing and that is it. My suggestion is to find a way to eat that you like, that doesn't feel like punishment and fits into your lifestyle. Which might require some real soul searching.

I was curious about this! It's something I'll be talking to my nutritionist about! Paleo/Keto. Following this thread! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Carbs yes or no

I appreciate all of the info! Its nice to see a full circle of how someone started and and got to goal and maintains. Its all very helpful and no post is too long. The idea of the surgery plus the keto fat burning is why I'm so pro low carb in my head. I have done keto many times though (less than 40 carbs) and never lost any weight. I even used those ketone strips to make sure and they confirmed I was good, but even after doing the diet for 6 months, never lost more than 5 pounds. I never get the keto flu either, so I'm ok there but if it doesn't work for me, and you can maintain on higher amounts, I wonder if I can eat carbs and still be ok. I think I just have to try things out and see how it goes.
  8. I'm 4 months post op today from my SIPS procedure. I have lost 83lbs in total since the start in early June, and 68 lbs since surgery, however I was hoping to be further along and even at my last Dr appointment they indicated I could have lost more and were surprised I hadn't. I seem to be averaging 11 lbs a month over the last 3 months, but what keeps happening is that I lose 11lbs in one week, then NOTHING for 3 weeks!! Is this normal? At first I thought it was just a stall, but the last 3 months in a row have had exactly the same pattern. Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy to have lost the weight I have, but I was kind of hoping for it to go a bit quicker, because I have a total of 200lbs to lose and everyone tells me (including my Doctor!) that after the first 6 months it will slow right down. I took on board what they said and have been sticking to the food plan and going to the gym, because I was terrified if I didn't lose 100-150lbs in the first 6 months, I wouldn't get to my goal. But seems like my body had different plans. I also don't understand how I can have a daily calorie deficit of approx 1000 cals, but for 3 weeks out of each month, not lose anything? How is my body actually powering itself during that time? My hair is falling out in clumps and my skin isn't great, so I'm guessing thats what's happening instead, but seriously....how can I be running on negative?? My average daily food intake looks like this: Breakfast: either 1 boiled egg with a little mayo, or 1 protein shake (premier protein). Once a week I will have 1/2 a cup of rice cereal. Lunch: I batch cook chilli or soup with added protein at home to take to work. Usually have it with 1oz of pecans or macadamias (trying to follow keto) Mid-afternoon snack: cheese stick or protein shake (depending on whether I had one for breakfast or not) Dinner: Varies, but generally I go for pressure cooker chicken (between 3 and 5 oz) and green veg, or tuna salad, or 3-5oz of pork chop. 2-3 times a week I will have 3oz of sweet potato, but thats not every day and depends on how hungry I am. My average calorie intake is 99% of the time between 800 and 1150 and I hit at least 80g of protein every day. I try to keep carbs under 30g, but often average about 50g (gross) I count my water and get at least 64oz every day. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week, and on average I do 45 mins of cardio (cross trainer/eliptical and bike) and then 10-15 mins of weight training. Outside of this i try to be as active as I can, and I average round 6000-7500 steps daily (I have an office job so can be tricky) Does anyone have any advice or thoughts on what else I can do to try and speed this up? Should I do different things at the gym, or just try to go more often? Or should I mix up my food a bit more? I'd really appreciate any ideas.

    Over eating before surgery

So look, I'm not gonna lie to you. I worked my ass off pre-op to lose weight and lost somewhere around 50+ lbs if I remember correctly? But along the way, I also had a few food funerals. But for the most part, my diet was very clean. I did this mainly cuz I was terrified that my liver would be as big as a foie gras goose liver! I wanted to reduce it over those 6 months. I truly was so scared I'd be the girl they'd open and close telling me, "Your liver was so damn big, I've never seen anything like it," and close me up without the surgery. So I had surgery about 5weeks ago. The doc told me my liver was small and pink and did just what it was supposed to do--stayed silent and out of the way during my RNY. So the angst is worth it. It's also worth it to decarb, dealcohol, desmoke, and decaffeinate. It's much easier to go through keto flu without the operation to deal with too. My recovery was obscenely easy. The surgery was obscenely easy. Cuz I prepared like hell up front. IF you are truly having eating issues and it sounds like you are, I'd look up a therapist--someone who specializes in bariatrics. I'd ask your surgeon. I would level with your team about what's going on with you and ask for help. My RD was all I needed, but some need more help. Don't be ashamed to do what you need to start your new life out on the right footing!!!

    Keto

@@Laughkc11 First time I heard about the Keto diet was a year after surgery. I liked that it burns fat instead of using carbohydrates for energy. I eat avocados, real butter, and eggs. Pork sausage is also hard for me. I still eat turkey sausage.

    Keto

Anyone start eating keto right out of the gate? Like as soon as you were off of soft foods, etc? I'm still a few weeks away from the normal diet phase, but I'm not thrilled about the idea of living off of sugar-free/fat-free products. I'm a bit concerned that I won't be able to tolerate the fats associated with keto, so I'm curious what others' experiences have been.
  12. Due to a weird set of circumstances I have moved back to my home city (Brisbane, Australia) and am about to start a new job on Monday. As a result my Sleeve surgery is currently on hold until such time as I build up some personal leave from this new company to be able to take 2 weeks off to recover from the surgery. I also have a big final professional exam coming up in the middle of the year so really need to focus on that as well... so no WLS for me until July earliest. In the mean time I am going to go on the Diet Doctor program, I did the 2 week challenge a year or so ago and did lose about 5 kg in the 2 weeks.. that's about 11 pounds, Hubster also likes the food and lifestyle and it works for him as well (he also needs to lose about 30kg/66 pounds) For both of us the biggest issue we have is alcohol (Aussies drink like fish haha) so that needs to be curtailed and we both do really well on Keto or very low carb finding hunger is really not an issue after the first few days and keeping to it is pretty simple as you make 2 x every dinner the other half of which becomes lunch the next day, I also really like this kind of food myself. The program is here if anyone is interested... https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/get-started As I am interstate on induction and training next week we are actually going to start it on the 12 (program starts on a Sunday). Has anyone else been on this program and had success with it? Anyone want to join in starting 12th Jan?
  13. That's a great question for your surgeon. I know most stomachs are cut to bougie sizes from 32 to 60 fr. But most surgeons do them around 36/40. Print the photo and ask during a consultantion. Another alternative for you is a Gastric Ballon, coupled with a strict keto diet. You wont eat much as you lose weight and its temporary

    liquid diet :( lol

So i had my pre op nutrition class today and they specially said no premier or fairlife. This is what was in the powerpoint they did. What if I want to use a shake not listed, such as Premier, Fairlife, or Atkins? Most of these have less than 5 carbohydrate grams per serving. Therefore, we do not recommend using them for your pre-op diet program. You may be HUNGRY and/or experience the “keto flu” caused by dropping your carbohydrate intake too quickly. The “keto flu” causes unpleasant side effects such as nausea, lightheadedness, shakiness, sweatiness, irritability, headache and stomach upset

    Keto after sleeve?

I specifically asked my surgeon during a follow up about keto since my sister is doing it and we share some recipes. She said "no keto" due to the high fat. I still share some recipes and many of them are easy to modify the fat content.

2 months til 2 years VSG

I will be 2 years 4/29. I lost the full feeling signal at about 6 months. I've been a slow loser and have gained 15 pounds since my low of 161 2/28/17. I stayed in the 160's until about November 2017 and have now bounced between 170-176. I definitely have my hunger back and have incorporated all the naughty foods back into my diet. Some days I get full quickly and other days not so much. Trying to get back on track. I'm having a hard time with finding a diet that works for me. I've tried low carb, Keto, Paleo and Whole 30. I just want to be normal and eat like a regular person. I'm sick of protein, sick of protein drinks and would love to not feel guilty every time a carb passes my lips.
  17. Since I got no counseling beyond a sheet of paper, that said I could eat , lightly, after a month. I went from shakes and soups to regular food. I was eating high protein, very small portions— 800 calories. I was not losing for a month. I started using ProTracker, Keto/Calorie. I stay under 1100c., and track every morsel. I keep carbs under 50, and fats low. I have lost my desire for junk. I’m surprised I haven’t s sprouted feathers, I eat so much chicken. It’s slow, but almost steady. I had a serious leg injury, and my mobility is not yet where it should be, but I try to do what I can. It’s just good to no longer be controlled by food. Good Luck to you.
  18. The good news is that it gets better as you’re able to introduce more foods back into your diet. I have always enjoyed cooking and now I just try to find creative ways to recreate healthier versions of my favorite recipes, like a keto Pad Thai, and I use a lot of herb and flavors so that what I’m eating is full of flavor. It’s going to take time for your mind and body to adjust. At three weeks out your body is still healing and may feel a bit all over the place for a while. I couldn’t reach my protein or water goals until a couple of months out so don’t be too hard on yourself, it will come. Even at 5 months out I still miss my water goals sometimes, in fact today is one of those times!! Losing 42lbs is a huge achievement and you should be really proud of your self. Hang in there
  19. Yes Ive been looking at both as well I saw something like the caveman keto diet so that sounds about it good. Everything im looking into is juicy meaning in sauce my doc said Im not allowed to eat like oven chicken, turkey, no grilled dry steak, no fried chicken etc. So basically everything has to be moist because he said its better for the first year to take care of my new stomach and to lose the maximum amount of weight. He also said dried meat (like oven and fried) can give me a stomach ache and ill literally feel it digesting in my stomach. Sounds cray cray but whatever Im in this for life and I wont be suffering because thank goodness I know how to cook. The only problem I have is that Im dominican and in my culture I typically make rice, beans, and meat at least 4-5 times a week pasta dish for the weekends so I dont think I can convince my entire family to be on the diet so Ill just make two meals but Im thinking since its just me and I wont eat alot and also im fine with eating the same thing all the time Ill just prep 2 lasagna pans 1 for lunch 1 for dinner it should last me 6 days then we eat out once a week. Hope you all ok with me talking about food :X

5 years and it is never too late

i am doing the following -weighing every day -tracking everything in myfitnesspal -eating less than 50g carb and NO sugar -moderate protein. around 50-60g -fat to satiety. i don’t count it. -eating only 2 meals a day most days (and a snack that is basically a pickle / piece of cheese) -using intermittent (18:6) fasting and alternate day fasting (basically on one day i eat 2 meals in a 6 or 8 hour window and then when i finish dinner i don’t eat until dinner the next day, then repeat. not counting my morning coffee with heavy whipping cream. i live for it! it works out that i eat one meal a day or two meals a day alternating. only snacks consist of a dill pickles with ounce cheese or tea, coffee or broth in between meals if they are even needed. hunger much less with Low carb healthy fat so not really need much snacking. this sounds hard and the first couple days are but then it becomes normal. i do not do long fasts. those require electrolytes etc and need to be careful if on meds though i am not) i had been grazing and eating carbs to gain the 65lbs over time. i used “never binge again” to give up sugar and my nightly peanut butter sandwich. i also used it to give up snacking. once i got used to 2 meals a day and cut out carbs my hunger and cravings went away. insulin drives cravings and by reducing number of feedings it gets lowered and hunger goes away. this is not for everyone but working for me and for some it is a way to jump start getting back on track. once i get back to my goal i will experiment with how often i need to do the one meal a day thing in order to maintain. i may only need to do it after a party or holiday etc. i am not full keto (that’s under 20g carbs) but essentially that is style i am doing. and intermittent aka “time restricted eating” besides reading jason fung, look him up on youtube. i recommend easing into it gradually over time: -give up sugar then -give up eating after dinner then -give up 1 snack then -give up another snack then -no eating between meals the -give up breakfast (or one meal of your choice) and you don’t even need to go to one meal a day alternatively. the above may already be enough for you. the key is giving your body a break from making insulin. when insulin is secreted your fat cells are told to not burn fat. but read the book, or youtube and do your own research and what works for you.

    Pre-Op by a month and I'm scared...

I had no problems that I know of from regular keto, off and on for years, but it was the super low carb to carnivore that did it! I didn’t know what was going on the first time (Lhermittes and burning patches on my forearms, NP at my dr office said the Lhermittes was “just arthritis”, forgot about the burning patches since this was all long gone by my appointment. Moved to Colorado and had that second flare that lasted a few months and my medical care has been SO much better out here. Even making progress towards bariatric surgery is a huge improvement. Lived in TN and GA previously. My only lasting symptom came in between the flares and just two fingers on my left hand are partly numb. Hope the leg numbness doesn’t affect your mobility too terribly!
  22. I am currently scheduled for surgery June18th! yay! I am thinking once I get on regular food to go on a KETO diet. Anyone have experience, Advice if this diet would be a good option? Having some anxiety about after surgery diet
  23. I've had good luck with electrolyte drops, Keto Chow brand, ordered online. Years ago, a doctor unofficially recommended 8 oz tonic water 30 minutes before bed for cramping legs (because of the quinine). Worked like a charm. Of course that's carbonated, but maybe you could shake it up and let it "flatten" first?

OMG OMG OMG I DID IT!!!!!!!

Thank you!! I thought about changing my highest weight, but that's not what I was when I had my surgery and I wanted to track my progress from my surgery weight. I did keto to lose the weight my doctor wanted me to lose, and it was amazing for that short amount of time. Taught me a lot about watching calories and especially carbs. Also taught me about making some better choices with the alternative foods that are out there. So I'm glad I did it. And it allowed me to lose the weight I needed to rather quickly. I needed to lose 30 pounds and I lost 33.

    What was your tipping point?

I would say that my tipping point was losing about 70 lbs on keto, and then regaining all (plus more) back and seeing just how much better i felt when i was doing what was right. I know that keto wasnt sustainable and after talking w/my therapist and reading online, i decided to pursue surgery. i know it wouldnt be an easy way out, but it has made me return to how much better i felt and know that i can keep going. i just moved apartments and i managed to pack and move most of my person stuff and i didnt feel like i needed a week to recoup. and you had mentioned eating out. It's soooo difficult for me bc i enjoy eating out with my friends (esp now that covid restrictions are being lifted and we're all vaccinated) but i still have to be wary. Order apps for entrees (or find a good friend that would split their entree with you!) and maybe a side of veggies. Order only water and absolutely STOP when you're full. i get these weird hiccups when i'm full and they're very loud and embarassing so i try to avoid pushing myself.. plus, it can always be lunch the next day!
