    Bougie size???

At my pre-op appt on Thursday I asked what size bougie and was told it was a 16 or 18 to make it easier to go down your throat and then it was expanded with air. My surgeon does not oversew as he said he finds the stitches creates more holes and more trama to the tissue. Prior to surgery end he clips off he bottom and closes off the esophagus and pressure tests the sleeve - the pressure is greater than any cough you would have. He has never had a sleeve leak and out of 2500 bypass surgeries he has only had 7 leaks. He is in practice with another surgeon and they perform all surgeries together so you have two attending surgeons from a Center of Excellence and I have met both - one did my initial appt and the other the pre-op. The diet they do is a little more restrictive than I have read on here. Day before surgery is clear fluids as is the week following surgery. The 2nd week is full liquids and the 3rd and 4th week is mushies.

    Gastric sleeve and lupus

I had bypass on 11/21/19, and I was diagnosed with SLE, Sjogrens, and PMR in 2017. Thanks God it’s well controlled with Plaquenil. The only issue I’m experiencing is the fatigue, and I’m noticing hair loss starting. That scares me the most, but I’ve added Biotin to my vitamin regimen. The pain and discomfort I’m still experiencing I’m not contributing that to my Lupus at this time. I had hernia repair too and that’s the area the bulk of my pain is, and lower abdominal region. I wish you the best of luck. Just know there’s no more oral prednisone if you have to use that for flare ups it has to be IV, or injection only from what my doctor told me. It cannot be long term.

    Nichole Richie--Band? Bypass?

Nicole Richie wants to make something clear: Her scrawny figure is all natural, and not the result of any medical intervention. The undersize tabloid staple is peeved that people believe she's the unnamed "young Hollywood starlet" from a recent New York Post blind item who underwent "secret bypass surgery," only to have it undone when she "lost too much weight." "It just doesn't stop," Nicole fumed on her MySpace page on Tuesday. "So, I gain a little bit of weight, and I'm accused of having a gastric bypass surgery reversed? It's pathetic of Page Six to insinuate I have done this." Continues the irate and (maybe, just maybe) infinitesimally meatier Richie, "Anyone that knows anything about this surgery would know that legally, you must be at least 100 pounds overweight to even have the surgery done, and [it] is a serious, life changing procedure—not one to throw around as a joke or a rumor." It's not surprising that Nicole isn't laughing off the rumors. After all, she knows a thing or two about the surgery: Her former fiancé, Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein, dropped 155 pounds—almost twice her body weight—after undergoing the procedure in 2003. The blind item, which claimed the mystery starlet's "recent four-day stint at a health clinic" was really to have the bypass removed, appeared three weeks after the eating disorder-denying Richie announced she was seeking diagnostic treatment to discover why she was failing to pack on the pounds. The evidence, however, remains in Nicole's favor: Since she decided to get help, she hasn't gone four straight days without being snapped by the paparazzi. "It is not Nicole," her rep insists to People, pooh-poohing the implication as "ridiculous." "There are a ton of 'Hollywood starlets.'" Rants Richie, who will soon begin work on the fifth season of "The Simple Life" with newly reinstated BFF Paris Hilton: "I've given a statement I am in the process of putting on weight, and that should be enough. It's a shame to hear that instead of hearing supportive words, someone needs to spin it into some negative, absurd way."
  8. So I'm looking at my medical records online and I see that I had a "gastrojejunostomy and resection of the distal part of stomach for gastric polyposis and refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease". I was like HUH?? Now I'm confused. I went online to look up the differences between this and the bypass, and some sites say they are basically the same, some say they are different because a different area is bypassed with the gastrojejunostomy, some say the gastrojejunostomy is part of the bypass, and I have no clue what to think. At no time did my surgeon ever mention anything other than bypass. No other words, procedures, names of procedures, etc. Just a bypass and removing my lower stomach. So now...what the actual heck????

    Celebrities With Lap Band

Sharon Osbourne has been through a lot. First the cancer and then the double mastectomy, her sons ms. She is one very strong lady and knows what she is doing. I have noticed she has been Mia from the talk and Carnie Wilson has been filling in. Can't tell if she has lost. I guess maybe she learned her lesson after being so public about her bypass. Best of luck to her.

    Celebrities With Lap Band

That is weird. I believe you but really said bypass on site I saw. I wonder where she has been lately. Hope all is ok.
  12. I self paid for my band and so I was devastated when it slipped and broke apart. I had a revision and I am so glad I did. I understand your concerns about money. I felt guilty spending all this money on surgeries that could have gone to other things (like a bigger house that we really need). I decided that my health was important. We spend money on cars, vacations, and all sorts of other things. Don't feel guilty. You are worth it! HUGS.

    Lap-Band Tragedy

Unfortunaly there are tons of us out there that had the band and had to have a revision surgery down the road due to complications from the band. I am so sorry to hear about this woman, this breaks my heart. I am so grateful that I had that horrible thing removed from my body.

    Lap-Band Tragedy

This is so sad. I feel really sorry that this happened to that poor woman, right after she retired too. I wanted to get the band when I came in for my consultation but they convinced me that it would not be a good choice. Even the lady right next to me as I was waiting for surgery was getting a revision to a sleeve from a band. She was extremely obese so the band had done nothing for her.
  15. I had my surgery Feb of 2013. At first all was going well, I never felt any restriction, I didn't have any complications. My progress went great at first, until I started back on solid foods. I didn't have problems adjusting to a solid food diet afterwards, and little by little I started eating a bit more, and a bit more. I guess I've pretty much just hit a wall as far as the surgery is concerned. I didn't follow through like I should have, so instead of the usual "surgery failed me" posts, this is my "I failed my surgery" plea for any assistance. I had surgery with Dr. Kim in Colleyville, and after recent contacts from his staff as well as their "awesome" support group leaders, it appears unless I have a revision surgery I'm on my own with getting back on track. I've put on about 30 pounds back, I started at over 400 and I'm sitting around 330 right now, so there was some success, I'd just like to get back on track and get to my overall goal weight of 260. Anyone been in this position before, and what did you do to start things back up? I'm working out, I hike about 10-15 miles a week, and I mountain bike 20-25 miles a week (just started back up). I carry a pretty good amount of muscle mass from my powerlifting days, but have recently retired from competitive lifting so I'm not lifting as heavy weights, or as often.

    Carbonation?

My NUT and surgeon says that those with the best long term results are those who don't drink anything carbinated because of pouch expansion. So, they jump up and down and tell us to plan on never having it again! I will say this, my sister had gastric bypass in 2005 (same team) and after about 3 years, she started drinking diet sodas in moderation again, and has continued to maintained her 100 pound weight loss. What are you all doing for workouts?

@@armywife79 oh my goodness! How horrible to have to go through that. You poor girl!!! Oh I know c-dif, once you smell it once, you never forget. Lol. I hear that bowel obstructions are common also due to dehydration. I will try very hard to hydrate and sip every 2 minutes and use a timer set to go off to remind me while awake lol. My surgeon removed quite a bit of scar tissue when I had my band removed last week so I am hoping it doesn't grow back too fast before my bypass. For every surgery, we grow scar tissue and if it's removed, more will grow back sadly. Adhesions suck! Haha and I bet you had quite a few of those from your c-section. How many incisions did you have with your bypass? I am still sore at my port site. It's still healing, I wish it would heal faster. I hope it will be healed by the time I have my surgery. I tend to heal a bit slower over the past 10 years. I think it is because I was on the brink of diabetes before the band.
  19. I'm a band to sleever! I had my band removed and a sleeve with duodenal switch done on 12/26! So far I love it! I'd would be happy to chat! Katy W- Louisburg, NC Lapband revision to VSG with DS HW- 297 Weight at Surgery-279 CW- will update at two week appt
  20. I hope that they are able to do it in one surgery with no complications. I know that dealing with two surgeries would be stressful AND very expensive. Hopefully the damage won't be very extensive. As for the recovery after the band removal, I don't know. I have known only a couple of people that had their bands out without getting a revision, but they didn't really talk about anything special as far as the diet. I'm sorry that I couldn't help with that part. Good luck and many prayers for you with your surgery.
  21. Surgery was 9/27 for me too. Had lapband removal & bypass done. Though I had hiatal hernia repair done in 2008 w/ band, have had a lot of issues w/ acid reflux and spasms at the junction where the stomach pouch & intestine attach. With several new meds, it's helped. Still on Clear Liquids 4 more days though due to the issues. I'm happy that my issues have been minimal. Had nausea and certainly gas pain, but no vomiting so far! 9/27 - 240 10/6 - 219 (I'm 5' 5.5") Excited with progress! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Chickening Out!

AdeptDreamer, As others have said, I would encourage you to conduct as much research as possible to make the right decision for you. There is an entire band to sleevers forum that you might want to check out. I have a band and am revising to a sleeve. I can hardly wait for my surgery on July 9. There certainly are people who have experienced success with the band. I lost about 60 pounds in the first year that I had it, but it was a challenge. I never got even close to goal. I hated the way the band would tighten for no reason and you wouldn't be able to get things down. I hated that even though food would stop in my chest and my pouch would be full, I would still be hungry. I hated the constant fills and unfills trying to get go my sweet spot, which I never did, and I hated the expense of all of that. I hated the sliming when least expected. If you feel the band is right for you, get as much information as you can. But I regret that I put this foreign body inside me and pray each day that when the doctor goes in to revise it, there won't be any damage.

    Chickening Out!

I am a band to sleeve revision. I would NEVER normally tell any one what to do but I say it now in regards to the band. DON'T! 1. my surgeon actually doesn't even DO them anymore and he was all part of the initial whole band thing. 2. Out of about 30 people that I know, only a few are NOT having problems. The rest of us, mild to serious and a good many of us are having to have them out and those of us who can, are revising to the sleeve. My band slipped and was riding up towards my esophagus. My surgeon told me on May 9th that it needed to come out and he advised me that the sleeve would be the best option for me. I had my removal/revision surgery on the 4th. Do your research. Read everything you can, where ever you can find it. Good, bad, whatever. Be sure the sources are good tho. There's a lot of garbage out in the Wide World Web. Your mom is worried. Understandable. Get her on board helping you find a surgeon and/or program. Attend some seminars and classes together. You are an adult and make the ultimate decision but it would be nice and helpful if she was on board w/your plans. Just makes things icky if she isn't or can't manage to be your advocate. Talk to her. Tell her your reasonings. The sleeve doesn't stop you from carrying on with your life. It helps you carry on with it! Best wishes!!!

    Lap Band or Sleeve?????

The band is less invasive than the sleeve...but to be honest, that's about all the good I can say for it at this point after my experience. With the sleeve, you start losing right away and drop a considerable amount of weight your first year because it does restrict how much you eat right from the start. With the band, it takes time to get to the right spot where it actually gets rid of the hunger and, for many of us, it never restricts how *much* we can eat. Also, the band seems to tighten and loosen on a daily basis making it a rollercoaster of joy (not) in knowing what foods are going to be a problem. Today I might be able to eat an egg...tomorrow, maybe not. I had the band put in 15 months ago. I'm getting ready to go back into surgery to get it taken out because since the day of surgery I've had persistent phrenic nerve pain (shoulder pain) from the band rubbing on my diaphragm. I plan on living without the band for a bit but if the hunger comes back and I can't control it, I'll go in for the sleeve revision.
  25. I have finished up my six month diet and have one last clearance before this sent to the insurance. Today....after six months of visits my PCP says to me "have you considered the sleeve?" He proceeded to tell me that this might be interesting to me since I was so scared of the bypass because I don't like the idea of them moving my body parts around, that the sleeve would be restrictive but not cause the malabsorption problem because they don't bypass the intestines etc. He said it would help with hunger because they remove so much of the stomach that it reduces the "hunger" hormones? Has anyone thought of the sleeve....why Lap over Sleeve? Curious because NOW I'm really confused!
