    Hair Loss?

Well, I haven't noticed any hair loss....yet. I would have thought it would happen by now. My surgery date was 1/17/12. I've gotten in my protein daily and take one biotin tab along with my other vitamins and I'm happy to say, no hair loss. I think it just depends on you. Do what you are suppose to do and deal with what may be. Also, I think it helps NOT to worry about hair loss (I didn't worry about it) and it just might not happen. :-)

Sorry to hear that. I was really worried about hair loss. I have an aggressive anemia and bleeding disorder so I've had my share of hair loss. I started taking Biotin months before the surgery and then switched to the chewable form after surgery. Are you taking vitamins right now?
  3. Feb 18th is the day! I am nervous, excited..ready to start my new life! I am also worried about hair loss, amd loose skin. NUT says protein, protein, protein! I also hear gelatin is good, not the kind we get in Jell-O, but the kind you get making stock, aka bone broth. You can alao purchase good gelatin to add to food.

    ~April Sleevers~

I have very fine thin hair and was so worried about hair loss. I haven't had it happen to me yet - for which I am very thankful. From the very beginning, I was able to get enough protein in. Don't know if that is making a difference or not, and don't quote me, but I think I remember hearing at the hospital the hair loss happens around 4 months AFTER not having enough protein intake. So, if right after surgery you did not get enough protein in, you might be seeing the hair loss now. It should also stop soon if you've been getting enough protein now.

I am loving this! I didn't think there were many of us here, OR who have been sleeved. I am scheduled for my surgery next week (May 8th), and I too am worried about hair loss, since my hair is extremely fragile to begin with; I'm getting it braided right before surgery, to be safe, but I also wear wigs everyday of my life, they're more like accessories now, so if it thins out, oh well, I've been there, done that! Everyone, would you please friend me, although I have my hubby, my daughter, and a couple of coworkers for support, NOTHING beats having people to talk to, who have been there! I'll be joining you on the losers bench soon! Wish me luck, and send up prayers! I am loving this! I didn't think there were many of us here, OR who have been sleeved. Three weeks is a long time. I'd hate to be out that long. I've heard of the food funerals but I'm just ready to cremate my fat clothes. I'm 5ft3 and 240 (whew.....I said that outloud). Aside from being healthy (getting rid of this dang PCOS, and prediabetes), my goal weight is 130-140, I want to rid myself of the muffin top, and wear pretty bras. My hair is natural and of course I'm worried about hair loss. I've been natural for a couple of years now and I've just started taking Biotin and I'm thinking about throwing in some MSM. I mainly do protective styles for a week or two at a time. I live in Raleigh but I work in Durham. Duke Raleigh isnt a Center of Excellence yet so I'm having my surgery at Durham Regional. Any suggestions for low sodium broth and Protein drinks. What did you have for your 3 wk liquid diet?

    September Bandsters

Hi. MOM I'm down 3 this week. Woo hoo! I am not like some of you who don't want a fill before Christmas. I am afraid NOT to get another one. The 3rd fill has finally helped although I do not have the restriction that will keep me from overeating sometimes. Like last night I wound up having a whole cup of soup and half a sandwich from Panera, so you who've been to Panera know that half of a Panera sandwich is like a whole sandwich you make at home. I just kept eating. No uncomfortable suggestion from the band to stop. I don't want to go through Christmas like I did at Thanksgiving where I lose my resolve and start eating things I know will make me gain weight. But I don't want to be like Tami (I think) and have to struggle to get down enough food to assure nutrition. I still worry about hair loss. I have a question about water. Sometimes when I'm really thirsty, I drink about 7 or 8 oz and then I can't help myself, I go right back for more. Then I get strange sharp pains in various places that are really uncomfortable. Does anyone else experience this? Is it gas? Sometimes I wonder if the water is putting pressure on the band and it is causing leakage at the port site or someplace. Any input out there?
  11. This is my first message and it will be brief. I have not yet done the banding. I have an older brother who lost form 415 to 255 on the Gastric bypass. I'm 315 and would like to get to 200. I have yet to pull the trigger on this, just getting my feet wet a bit. I actually think I'll do it but have a new business that is just beginning to cover all the bills. I do worry about hair loss, the replacement diet and any complications that might cost me more $$ down the path. Any comments ?
  12. My insurance and doctor haven't asked me to lose weight. I've been doing that on my own since January and am down 30 lbs. I have about 3 months until surgery and I plan on doing what I'm doing now so I'll actually lose more weight. My surgeon was fine with this. He said do what you're doing. Make habits. OK great! But losing weight on my own is totally messing with my head. I know I need this surgery. I have lost this same 30 lbs I don't know how many times and have 90 to go. I don't lie to myself about needing surgery, but I don't always like it. I feel like I'm mourning that I couldn't do this on my own. It's not the food I feel bad about. I'm mourning losing this life where I don't have to sip all day, where I won't throw up foam, or worry about hair loss. I know what I'm going to get on the other end is a great chance at a wonderful, healthy life. It's just the pounds I'm dropping right now sometimes make me think why can't this time be different? Because it's not. Period. Is this weird that I feel like this? Or is this a normal phase of the process? When I get like this I try to remember the benefits of surgery and that it gives me the best chance I will ever have at managing my obesity.
  13. Hello all! If Anyone on this forum was insanely worried about hair loss it was me. My long blonde hair has always been my thing (especially being the "big girl" all my life) so when I started losing A TON of hair at 4 months out I was so upset. Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow?

So worried about hair loss. I have thick hair so I'm sure I could afford to lose a little but still. I can't get all of my protein in no matter how hard I try. I'm only one week out so I'm sure it's still tough at this point since my sleeve is still swollen but still. Guess I will add some biotin to my daily routine. A lady I work with was sleeved last April and didn't have hair loss until about a month ago. I think she has let up on the protein thinking she was in the clear. I won't make that mistake!!
  19. 1. Why isn't the surgery more well known? --I have no idea. It's fairly new, and it seems like all the hype these days is about lap-band. I am hopeful that as there is more long-term information about the sleeve, it will get more attention from the media and be a more "popular" choice. 2. Since I am considering the surgery, but have a lower BMI, would any US doctor perform this surgery for me if I paid out of pocket? I just worry about surgical follow-ups in the US. if I do it in Mexico. --I really don't know this either. My BMI was much higher and I had surgery in Mexico, so I know little about the standards for low-BMI patients here. 3. I'd love a realistic idea of pain involved post-op. Is it an ache? Please describe. Some have said it is excruciating while others said a mere inconvenience. --My pain was not excruciating, but it was pain. I had nausea with it, and dry heaving, which was the most unpleasant thing. The first day it hurt to take a deep breath, but after that first day it got better quickly, in my opinion. I didn't take pain medication after the 2nd or 3rd day, and was given Toradol for pain the whole time, didn't need anything stronger. 4. I inquired online and was given the name of Dr. Jose Rodriguez in Juarez, Mexico. But most members (including my friend) seem to have had the surgery performed by Dr. Alberto Aceves or Dr. Alanza Reyes. They seem to perform the most number of sleeves. Any feedback on any of the above dorctors? --I went to Dr. Rodriguez (though in Tijuana, where he also practices, at the INT hospital). I had no complications and would definitely recommend him. He and his whole team of doctors were very professional, made sure questions were answered, were friendly, etc. I would be happy to email you if you have any specific questions, but it was a very positive experience for my husband and me (we had surgery the same day). 5. What do you feel like when you eat after the surgery? What is "foaming"? Is eating uncomfortable or painful? How long until eating (not over-eating) feel normal? --I have never had "foaming". I have eaten too fast (often!), and had pain and nausea. I haven't thrown up since the first few days post-op, but if I eat too much, there is pain involved. I started on "normal" foods at about a month post-op, and now I can eat almost anything, though I don't eat much bread or bread-type foods at all. I am 2.5 months out, and my brain still hasn't fully adjusted to the idea that I have a much smaller stomach, so I can't say I quite feel normal yet with the portions. I have learned to measure everything, because my eyeballs are bigger than my sleeve 6. I would prefer to have a slightly larger sleeve so the weight loss is more gradual and my weight manageble. What are the options? My friend has a 5 oz sleeve. --I'm not sure, actually. I would say this is something you would need to talk about with your surgeon. You might also look into gastric plication surgery, as I have heard it works well for those with lower BMIs, but there is maybe not quite as much restriction as with the VSG surgery. There is another board with information about the plication, and some people are having very good luck with it. Just another option for you. 7. I am freaked out by two possible side effects: gall bladder problems (very painful) and hair loss (doesn't sound too preventable unless the weigh loss is more gradual). In the US, doctors use a medication aimed at preventing gall bladder issues...is this standard in Mexico and is it effective? --Dr. Rodriguez did not use this as a standard medication. I haven't had gall bladder problems thus far, but I am considering asking my PCP for the medication anyway, as I'm a bit concerned about the possibilities, and it would seem better to prevent it. I'm worried about hair loss, too! I'm not sure it can be prevented. 8. Any regrets? Or any tidbits you wished you'd know and prepared for before hand? --About the first week or 2 after surgery, I had severe buyer's remorse. I didn't feel good, I couldn't eat, I was miserable. At a couple weeks out, I started to feel better, then the weight started coming off, too. I can now say that this is the best thing I've done for myself ever. I have a lot to lose still, but I am thrilled with how things are going so far. No regrets. 9. How difficult is the post-op diet? I like soup, chili, etc. but not so sure I can handle "mushy" food... --I had no difficulties with the post-op diet. I didn't feel like eating much at all, and I was unable to get in all my Protein at first, so that was a struggle. I didn't mind the mushy stage, and found a few go-to foods that I ate a lot. Then when I went to regular foods, those kind of went to the back-burner. I haven't eaten tuna for quite awhile, because I ate it for lunch every day my last week of mushies. I was surprised that I didn't have a harder time with the post-op diet, but I actually thought it wasn't too bad. The post-op diets vary a lot, though, so some are harder to live through that mine
  20. I'm just over 10 weeks post op from VSG and am worried about hair loss. It's been really good thus far but after doing some research I discovered that this usually isn't an issue for most patients till 3 months. So no more gloating for me lol I can't stand Protein shakes so I eat all my protein every day. As an average I usually hit anywhere between 60-90 grams a day and have also been using a Joico protein treatment on my hair. HW - 140kg or 308lbs SW - 132.5 or 291lbs CW 110kg or 242lbs So basically I'm wondering what other people have experienced and what their protein goals were that resulted in no hair loss? Hair loss

Happy1957 - I have a friend who had bypass surgery, many years ago now, but when her hair grew back, it was very curly as well. She would go for keratin treatments and get it straightened. For everyone - I was reading the paper this morning and came across an add entitled "Worried About Hair Loss?" It talks about this product, HairSil Accelerator. Says regular use may help fight hair loss and promote growth. It's available at Walgreens, Shaw's supermarket, Ralph's, Walmart, Meijers, Wise, Rite Aid, Jewel Osco, Kroger and Fred Meyer. I'm only 4 weeks out as of this coming Monday, but I think I might get it and see if at the very least I can help minimize the inevitable!
  22. I am almost 7 months out , I was sleeved on 8/2/11. I have always been vain about my thick hair, if nothing else was pretty on my fat body, I always had great hair! LOL! When I started losing hair by the HANDFUL, I went into a tail spin. I was cleaning hair out of the drains, off the hardwood floors, off the pillow. Nothing helped, not extra protein, not biotin...I was pissed. Well the hair loss has considerably slowed and today my hair stylist said she see lots of new growth! WOO HOO! So for those that are worried about hair loss, yes, you lose your hair but YES it comes back!!!! So now if I could only get off this stall and have the scale move again..........

    Hair loss anyone?

I wonder if they make a liquid biotin..or is the pill small enough to take. I worry about hair loss because I have a mild form of alopecia ,but I'm ok with wearing a wig if it comes to that.

    Hair Loss

I started using Nioxin a couple of weeks ago to keep the scalp in prime real estate condition. I didn't want to worry about hair loss after surgery. It's been drying out my hair, so I've been applying a wee bit of Moroccan oil on the ends. I'm T-minus 10 days, BTW.
  25. I'm not worried about hair loss, my hair is super thick so if anything I'm kind of looking forward to that part. It's just that I don't want someone to assume I'm "normal average" size and then have to explain the loose skin and see them get grossed out. Just not looking forward to that part. And that may all be in my head, maybe whoever I tell will be super cool about it, I guess it's just the unknown that worries me.
