    newbie alert

yes I have gone to the seminar that is required here. I have also completed my first nutrition appt. I just keep hearing things against the banding, which is also my first choice. My BMI is 38, and I feel i need to loose 80-100 lbs too. The more I hear from actual people who have had the surgery, the better i feel. I just think that maybe bypass is so drastic. thanks for the advice!

    Sick.... And miserable

You should be fine... Just make sure you follow the dosing on the back I the package and ONLY use stuff with acetaminophen. I got the flu the week I had my bypass and was still sick a week after. My doc just had me but the liquid Tylenol cold and flu... I survived. Haha
  4. Picked up a copy of Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies at borders books for $19.95. It's great and answers a lot of questions in plain language that most of us have and some we hadn't thought about. It covers LapBand and Bypass issues and clearly keeps issues with each seperate. There are Nook and Kindle versions too at about $10.00. I think its worth having on the bookshelf. Here's a cheat sheet link to whats covered in the book in more detail: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/weight-loss-surgery-cookbook-for-dummies-cheat-she.html

    Complications

I tore my port surtures and had to have a revision, and 7/04 my band was removed due to 40% erosion. I LOVED my band, and still think it is the safest, best WLS currently available. http://lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=933 http://lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1318 http://lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=2256
  6. Anyone have revision from sleeve to bypass? I would like to hear your story? Ups, downs, how it is working for you?....any information you are willing to share with me... Thank you

    Changing BC after surgery?

My surgery was November 2017 (VSG) and I've had issues with breakthrough bleeding on my usual pill, and still despite changing pills about 3 months ago. My provider thinks it could be an absorption issue, which I don't know if I necessarily agree with considering I had VSG and not bypass, but anyways... Has anyone gone to the Nexplanon (arm) birth control after surgery? Thoughts on it? I'm half a** looking into it (aka kind of not really) but wanted to see if anyone had personal experience on here going from pill to arm implant.

    Endoscopy

So the endoscopy revealed a large hiatal hernia and a duodenal ulcer! I have to be on ulcer meds and a med for acid reflux for 6 weeks and then have a repeat Endoscopy. Surgeon says a gastric sleeve would not be a good option for me with that large of a hiatal hernia. He still sees the gastric bypass as possible but the ulcer must be healed first. Disappointing but hopefully the ulcer will heal and I'll still be a candidate. No surgery in April though. Maybe May.
  10. Revision VSG to RNY due to Gerd. From the beginning of the revision process, I've lost 78 lbs in 7 months, and it is much faster & easier than before revision. I'm currently losing steadily 6.5 to 9 lbs a month. I've passed goal and slowly trying to work up to maintenance calories.

    Endoscopy

It wasn't bad at all. They spray something on your throat before you sleep. They found an ulcer. Sucks bc now my surgery got pushed back Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Due to my acid reflex, they will be doing the gastric bypass and not sleeve Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Advice needed

That’s only a little over 6 ft. I had the MGB on 3/1. My surgeon bypassed 11ft. I’m nervous that it wasn’t to much but he said I shouldn’t have problem losing now for sure.
  13. Have any of you plixies (I'm going to borrow that Texas Diva, it's cute) experienced dumping syndrome? I know that it normally goes hand in hand with gastic bypass or DS, but I saw on the Mayo clinic website that you can have it with fundoplication, which is what plication evolved from. I had a strange experience last night, and I'm curious now.
  14. I do not detect that I am treated any differently after my weight-loss from RNY gastric bypass surgery three years ago. For some people who haven't seen me since surgery, they sometimes fail to recognize me. Prior to surgery, like many others, due to my obesity, I was somewhat invisible. But now I am visible. Sometimes when I am in a store shopping and the person waiting on me is on the heavy side (and therefore somewhat invisible), I look at their name tag and greet them by name. They look up and are caught off-guard and astonished and grateful that someone took the time to notice.
  15. Hi I got my mgb on 23rd jan. Recovering great and managing and tolerating most foods etc. My surgeon told me the day following surgery that he left my pouch bigger because it was no longer safe to operate. Also said he bypassed 2 m .....does anyone know if this will effect my weight loss.
  16. Hi My name is Marina and i had my sleeve done on May 10th at 9 am and was finally able to come home the following night! I am 5 days post op and really felt alone until i stumbled across this forum!! For the past 3 days i have just been stalking everyone's chats... but now i'm ready to tell my own story. I am 35 years old , married with 2 children. I am 5'81/2" tall and before i started the process in nov '11, i weighed at my heaviest 335 pounds. My decision to make a change? 2 reasons 1. Well,, my best friend had bypass done a few years back and after a year of healing she is now running marathons and is the happiest i've ever seen her!! However, she did have difficulties with iron deficiencies and had to have transfusions for a few months. So i did my research and decided i would pursue the sleeve ! 2nd reason.. one day while i was driving home after picking my son up from daycare, my son asked me.."mommy , all my friends in school say you are fat?" I know , i know, kids are brutally honest even at 3 years old... but it hurt like hell. I grew up all my life with kids tormenting me and i just let it roll off my back.. or just went and grabbed a burger to make the hurt go away, or better yet.. chimed in with the kids and made fun of myself for being fat .. but hearing it from own kid.. i knew right there that i had to make a change. I started my journey Nov 7 , 2011 with all the nutrtionist visits, meetings etc.. and May 10th was the big day! I went home weighing in at 303 #s.. mainly the weightloss was because of the 2 weeks preop of liquid diet i had to do.. that was hard!! I just want to tell everyone that i am excited to be on here and be a part of a group who have had the same struggles as myself! I go to the doctor on may 18th.. so hopefully more weight has fallen since then!! ( we dont own a scale in our house!) I now understand what head hunger is.. I am not hungry but i find myself wanting to just taste everything .. becuase i cant have it.. or more than likely becuase i've been on a clear liquid diet since april 26th!! I'm sick of the clear liquid diet. lol.. Well thank you everyone for listening to me and again I love that there is so much support from everyone!! Oh.. for those of you pre-op wondering what to expect.. soreness on my right side.. doctor said it is because that is where they took out the stomache .. dont be a hero take your pain meds when you are supposed to , it'll help you function better and walk more.. walk , walk , walk... sip .. sip... sip... lol... thats what i'm doing now.. Good luck everyone!!

    How Bad Is It ?

I know this is easier said than done, but try not to panic over bumps in the road. What looks or feels catastrophic today is probably not as bad as it seems. That’s what my mom used to say when I was growing up and despondent about something (which was often, especially during adolescence). I was strangely comforted by her words because I knew (and she frequently reminded me) that Mom had seen some pretty bad stuff in her life. It's easy to "awfulize" things when you have a pain, symptom or experience you didn't expect and can't explain. You're sure that's something's wrong. You haven't lost weight in three days, or you found hair clogging your shower drain, or you puked up your dinner. Don't let fear cloud your thinking. You will wear yourself to a frazzle if every event becomes a crisis. This applies to many aspects of your life. It's extremely difficult to make a good decision when you're in a panic. Your vomiting might be related to WLS, but it could also be the result of a garden-variety intestinal bug. Your teenaged daughter's failure to return your phone call could be because she was in a terrible car accident, or it could be because her cell-phone battery died. So ask yourself: Is this an emergency? Is it life-threatening, disabling, or just inconvenient? What will happen if I don't do something about it right now? Can I deal with this myself, or do I need help? What kind of help (medical, emotional, spiritual, financial)? Who can help me (my surgeon, therapist, best friend, minister)? Be careful how you choose your helper(s). I know you love your sister, who might tell you that everyone in her family has been sick with a bug since you saw them (and their germs) on Sunday, but she probably can’t accurately tell you whether your symptoms are related to your WLS. Is whatever you fear might be wrong really, truly the very worst thing you could hear? I’ve survived some scary and disappointing stuff during my WLS journey. I’ll probably never forget hearing my surgeon say, “Jean, your band has to go,” and “Jean, I removed your band but I wasn’t able to do your sleeve revision today because of a stricture in your esophagus.” I’ve also gotten bad news about friends who are fellow WLS patients. I mean really, really bad news, when death was reaching out its evil hands to take my friend away forever. In my own life, nothing can top losing a parent. “Jean, your mother died today,” is (so far) the worst bad news I’ve ever heard. A cancer diagnosis, the death of my husband, or the loss of my home to a tornado (entirely possible where I live) would also be mighty devastating. But if I dwelled on those possibilities, I’d spend the rest of my life in anxious misery, and I’m pretty sure that’s not what God has in mind for me. I'm not saying that your struggles aren't important. They are. But it will be easier for you to handle them if you do it with a clear mind and a calm heart. So take a deep breath. And when in doubt, call your surgeon.
  18. Hello! I saw that we started at the same weight 215 lbs day of surgery. I will be one week out tomorrow and am currently about 210lbs. How has your weight loss been since starting at a smaller weight then most? Just curious... I know everyone is different! I am also a lapband to sleeve revision, so I have been told my weight loss may be much slower. THANKS
  19. I don't understand getting the revision when you're at goal weight. I understand your concerns. My Dr. Does the Linx Procedure for GERD, have you looked into that yet? Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. There are always other hospitals. However, you have to keep in mind that foreign materials in the body have their own problems and complications. Getting revision is a hard decision to make. I postponed for about a year before I finally had the courage to get MGB.
  21. I have read that article before lol. That was actually the article that made my mind up to have the surgery in the first place. It seemed to say that the sleeve and bypass were more effective than the lap band, but to me it looked like both the sleeve and bypass were effective with the sleeve having less complications. That was why I choose the sleeve. But I am still second guessing myself like the OP. Sorry if I hijacked this thread OP. It is hard to find people who understand PCOS and weight loss and insulin resistance and I get really excited when I do because I really want to make the right choice.

    Vertical Sleeve vs Band

    a) there is a "forum" on lapband to sleeve patients you might want to check that out- I have (for another week) the lap band and am getting a revision to a sleeve- I am NOT a lapband hater- I am not having my lapband removed because of slippage, erosion, malfunction etc. I have an auto immune disease and it is thought by my phsyicians that my body is "rejecting" the band as a foreign body in my body and not allowing me to get better physically from the auto immune issues. I was successfull with the band- lost 100lbs and about 89 inches all over- I have since gained back about 35 lbs total over the last year due to in-activity (no exercise due to back injury) and having band un-filled- My personal advice would be this- Unless you have only minimal weight to loose i'd say 45-75 lbs then consider the band- if you have 75+ lbs to loose then look at your other options- The studies when I was banded 3 years ago about the sleeve were not available and now that I am being sleeved there are new studies out about the band. I am reading now that the band is normally only reccomended for 4-5 years and that statistically most band pts have it removed and revisioned into something else. Only you and your doctor know what is best for you, your body and your future- You should not let anyone on here persuade or disuade you. We all have made whatever decisions we made on our own- Yes it is nice to have advice and opinions BUT you have to live with what you decide etc... There is a pain in the arse factor too about the band with fills, follow up etc- looking back it was a bit of a pain but not to inconvenient- AND there were a lot of foods I couldnt eat but I found new foods that I did like that I would have NEVER tried before.. So for me it wasnt a complete loss... Good luck with whatever you decide to do- I'm sure you will do great!
  23. Hi, I'm new to viewing and posting on web sites. I am leaving tomorrow for Fresno, California for my pre-op visit before I get my lap-band on Friday 11/07/08. I am very nervous. I have a real pain/surgery phobia and I researched this for many, many months before deciding to go ahead with this procedure. I actually backed out of Gastric Bypass surgery 3 years ago because of my intense fear of pain and vomiting which goes along with the surgery (I'm told):smile2: Anyway, I have severe arthritis and I have had increased pain in my right knee for quite some time. It is definitely related to my weight, but I need a knee replacement and the surgeons want to wait until I have the lap-band before going ahead with that one. Taking weight off first will help with the new knee. I am "bone-on-bone" - in other words no cartilege left. I have tried Hylgan shots, cortisone shots, acupuncture, and heavy meds. Nothing helps. So, I hope to help myself by losing some weight quickly and then scheduling knee replacement. I wish I could calm down about the issue of pain, but it is always in my mind. Besides the anticipated pain from the surgery and excess gas, I need pillows under my knee and lots of meds to even sleep a little bit here at home.:wink5: How will I be able to handle getting out of a tall hospital bed and walk around the room when I can only hobble around (sometimes with a cane) in the best of circumstances??:tongue2: Does anyone have any suggestions for someone who is older than the average lap-band patient and with arthritis? Thanks a lot. I hope to hear from others in my situation about this soon.

Was your band placed too high?

agbardoe: When I had an upper GI after the endoscopy, my surgeon called me in that day for a slight unfill. I have felt much better. but as of today, I am changing doctors to a more experienced surgeon from a hospital of excellence.I went to see him for a second opinion first - before I decided to change. I don't believe my old doctor had the experience to deal with problems and complications. When you say the band hasn't been working for you - in what way? What kind of pain? From eating? Do you have reflux or heartburn? What does your doctor say about this? Have you had a recent upper GI? What caused you to gain 20 lbs? Anyway, before you make any changes - get answers to all your questions and concerns. If your insurance paid for the band you might need to be persistent to get a bypass if it is found that you have a severe complication from the band. Good luck.

    How long!

Hi, just had my bypass 5 days ago, feeling kinda normal today. I found my orange Popsicles a life saver along with the cup a soup with a tsp of mashed potato in it. I am off for another 3 weeks and believe me I need it.
