Daily calories allowed and serving size after surgery
cindyw41 replied to volsfan82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
2oz of a Protein, 8oz of a liquid (yogurt, pudding, Soup, shake exc.) should be your serving size. Eat your protein first, then veggies and if you still have room then a carb/starch. I rarely have room for anything but my protein. Most of the time I can't finish that without feeling satisfied. My calories at this point is 600-800. I'm still in the losing phase. I doubt my surgeon will increase this until I'm maintaining. My target goals are 100 gr protein and 64oz Water. Some don't track calories..just protein, carbs and water. I track to make sure I hit the min calories because I'm still not feeling hungry and I can't rely on my body to tell me to eat. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Any vegetarian banders out there?
esv2000 replied to suzie77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am vegeterian and get my proteins from Atkins protein shake for breakfast and then make my own protein shake for lunch. Rest of the day I eat beans, oats, lentils, yogurt and don't worry about proteins because I already got my proteins in for the day. Sometimes I do eat eggs but they get stuck! -
congrats on your banding!!!! i also skipped a step or two, i thought i was gonna chew my arm off on liquids!! i stayed on them for 1 wk, then my doc said i can introduce purred foods.i was big on mashing up bananas with non fat vanilla yogurt, this took the place of eating ice-cream everynight, i am 3 mths post op and still have that snack for breakfast or night snack and have lst 40 pounds so far. i never had the pains your describing but i would put a call to your surgeon and see what advise he can give you..best of luck....irish

Rough 'nothing tastes good' kinda day
Raine replied to Husky2Healthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so I misunderstood your purree'd stage. Keep in mind guys that your docs just want you to get used to food at this point. They are not counting on the foods you consume just yet to have your daily Protein intake yet. I would go with the mashed potatos with the carmelized vidalia onions (no chicken). Any meat I pureed was just gross so I depended on my shakes and greek yogurt for my protein. I would eat the mashed at dinner time and with the onions it adds a little extra flavor. Believe me you will love it! I also made mashed sweet potatos too. The refried Beans and chees with a little picante, sour cream and guac was alson a favorite of mine for those two weeks. Again no meat. You can have oatmeal and grits as well. I know the carbs are a little high in these but then again you shouldn't worry about those until you get to the softs. Make these for dinner and do your shakes and yogurt during the day, it gives you something to look forward to. I only had to do 2 weeks of the mushy stage, a month seems a long time to endur to me too. But every docs plan is different! -
Soft food vs Pureed foods
weigh-in replied to weigh-in's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On the hand out from the dr it just stated at 1 week post op begin soft foods of scrambled eggs, any kind of cheese except cream cheese, yogurt, plain, cottage cheese and refried beans. Then it states to be on the soft foods for 3 weeks, then to move on to introducing real foods, one at a time, into my diet. -
Kind of Gross, but I need to know
TheCurvyJones replied to Debi Amador's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Daily is supposed to be the norm but I find a lot of us suffer from constipation. I take Colace probably about once a week and try to increase my Fiber with ruffage like lettuce and broccoli. I just can't eat a ton of it, so I supplement. You don't want to get backed up and you DON'T want to wait until you're in pain to address the problem! A lot of people like flax seed or chia seeds to add fiber to their yogurt and what not. I can't do chia and I've never tried flax. -
Slow Weight Loss 3 weeks after Surgery
Minxie89 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 8/24/15 with a starting weight of 261. I went in for a post op visit on 9/05/15 and weighed in at 245. I have weighed myself every 3 days ever since then, and a few times my weight has gone UP! And now, almost two weeks later, I'm only down two pounds! I'm just really confused. I tried to leave a message with my doctor's office but its 4 pm on a Friday, so hearing back from them in order to ease my mind before the weekend is a pipe dream if I ever heard one. My question is, is it possible to be losing inches and visibly looking like I"m losing weight when really my scale is 'barely moving'? I'm concerned because I was told in the first couple months, the weight would be falling off. I've been following my surgeon's food plan which, according to other forums I've read tends to be one of the stricter diets. I did 2 weeks of low carb before surgery, 2 weeks of liquid after, and I'm now about 2 weeks into pureed food. I do a lot of Protein additives into fruit mixes with plain yogurt as the base. I also do a lot of atkins Protein shakes. I'm not doing that great on my Water intake, and I feel like maybe my body is holding on to water and thus water weight. I'm only experiencing BMs about once every 3 days. At my last visit, they told me having a BM only about once every 2-3 days is fairly normal... but sometimes I'm not sure if it is. Please give me your two cents because I really am concerned with my results thus far. -

Hi, I was also sleeved on June 28th. I am currently on soft foods. I eat 1/2 cup of food 4 times per day. I am only eating what is permitted, (Cottage cheese, yogurt , Soup, mashed veggies, scrambled egg and low fat soft cheese) . From Pre op to 9 days ago I lost 31 pounds. In the last nine days, 1 pound. I am walking more and more and not loosing anything. Has anyone hit a similar "stall"? Any suggestions??? -
New start to life and I have a million questions
djdyps01 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 5 dayz out from my bypass. I have been drinking veggie broth, chicken broth, but yet to try beef broth. I have been reading about gaining ur sense of smell. And dam I guess it's true. Cuz the smell of my fridge makes me gag. After over a week of drinking the same thing, I find myself not eating. I have tried the Greek yogurts and we'll I got sick of it fast. I do have the privilege of having someone to talk to that's close to me about wat to expect. My cuz had it done 3yrs ago and lost over 100 pounds. And looks good. But i wanna try new things but is it to soon. Like beans. Eggs. Etc. I read bake beans are bad but black beans are ok. Then read sugar free ketchup is still ok. Please help I'm way new to this and never expected it to be so hard. But i know wen u talk about it to people who have success it will boost my morale.. so any suggestions. -
. Gonna have a hard time, I don't like yogurt, cottage cheese, retried beans, tuna, fish. I found out today I tested positive for an infection from tan antibiotic they give u at surgery that can cause diahreah and nausea. So it most likely wasn't the mushy foods I tried but the infection. So have to take meds for 14 days and things should subside in next 3 days- I will try again then. I have had nothing but Gatorade since Tuesday

Hello everyone - Well, I had my banding procedure yesterday and now I am home. My doctor said the procedure went really well, and though I was terrified of the anesthesia, I made it through in one piece. So right now I am in some pain, more than I was in the hospital, but of course the drugs are better in the hospital. I imagine that this is what getting stabbed several times in the stomach feels like, but I cannot be sure. I have one incision that hurts way worse than the others. The area with the port does not hurt too badly yet, but we shall see. I just wanted to thank whoever suggested that I buy Gas-X thin strips and liquid tylenol - they have been life savers! I don't have so much of a problem with air in my shoulders or chest cavity, I myself am just kinda gassy. And the liquid tylenol provides just enough pain relief in between taking the narcotic pain reliever (I am on dilotid). I have had some issues with nausea, but mostly right after the procedure and this morning after the follow up upper gi test that I had done. My questions right now are: How long before I start to feel better? I know its only been a day but I am already getting antsy and am ready to leave my apartment. I walked outside some today, and my doctor wants me to get up to 2 miles per day (I went to the gym 4-5 times per week before the surgery). Like I said, I walked some today, but I was exhausted from walking around the block. Also, how does everyone handle the post-surgery diet? I am on a full liquid diet, where I can eat broth, creamy soups, yogurt, milk, etc. I have had some creamy sweet potato soup today, some hot tea and some water. I'm not really hungry and I was kinda just forcing myself to get some nourishment (the tea is for my throat which is so sore from the tube). I also had a protein drink just to make sure I was getting some protein. Does it become easier to eat during this liquid stage? I am on it for a week before I start with the mushy foods, and I just want to make sure that I am doing it right. I kinda feel as though I really need to succeed at this, so I think I"m putting some unnecessary pressure on myself. I feel as though this is somewhat of a last ditch effort for me to lose weight. I have been overweight all my life, and though I am only 27, I somewhat feel as though I am at my wits end. I really want to succeed at this. I'm sorry for my rambling post... I think it is partly the drug haze I am in and partly the stress I am putting on myself. The long road ahead is kinda daunting to me. So, I am open to anyone's suggestions.... hopefully some other people out there understand how I feel. Jenn:notagree

So I am 6 days post op but am having a hard time with liquids. I hate sugar free anything and these protein shakes just seem so full of chemicals. Is it just me but it feels weird to nourish my hurt tummy with processed liquids. Is there a better alternative? Like pure yogurt or liquid oatmeal and whole whey....thoughts? I want to lose weight but I feel honey and pure sugar has GOT to be better than all the fake stuff...

Congrads on your success so far. I think I was down only about 18 pounds on day 30. For some reason I have not had a stall yet (knock on wood). I am now coming up on my 11th week and my tastebuds are constantly changing. For example, when I first went on solid foods, I was loving my cheesy-scrambled eggs. Also some chicken in sauce, but now don't care for either. To be honest, I am not a "kitchen guy", don't care to prep, cook, or cleanup. So for now, right or wrong, I sticking to yogurt, cottage cheese, protein drinks, ready made low cal soups, and microwavable low cal dinners from "Atkins" & "Realgood". Still can't eat any read meat but tolerate pork. Feels like more of a mental thing than an actual stomach issue. Hopefully later in the year I will try different food plus looking at getting back on the grill this summer. Saltwater fishing is a hobby and I am not one of those "catch & release" anglers, more like "catch & grill". 😁 But my first dinner on solid food also happen to be a birthday dinner for a relative at Outback restaurant where I ordered Wood-fire grilled chicken breast topped with sautéed mushrooms, crisp bacon, melted Monterey Jack and Cheddar and honey mustard sauce. I ate half and was very, very happy.

I had sleeve. I’ve been having protein shakes, crystal light, bone broth with hot sauce and protein powder, fage 0% yogurt with tajin seasoning, a little cream of wheat with broth, and protein water. I’m getting pretty tired of the full liquids.

I've heard several people on the board talk about DaVinci Gourmet sugar free Syrup and I finally found some yesterday. This stuff has no calories, no carbs, no fat...just 10 mg of sodium per 2 tbsp. I got the vanilla and kahlua flavors. I used some in my coffee this morning and it was pretty good. Just wondering if anyone could share some creative ways to use it, other than coffee. In greek yogurt maybe?

Paranoid About Getting Stuck!
♥LovetheNewMe♥ replied to acoleman380's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It is like having a big lump in the back of your throat. It usually does not last very long and usually it is over very quickly. I wish I could tell you that you would never get stuck but it happens. I was always very careful but there comes that time when you are distratced for what ever reason and you get stuck and up it comes. You will be ok, do not stress over this, try to be as careful as possible and chew well.Good luck. Edit: I reread your post, one bit of advice I can give you is make sure your Protein choices are moist. I found that early in the morning it is more difficult for me to eat and in the early days I could not eat egg or any firm protein for Breakfast. I ate a lot of greek yogurt in the beginning becasue of protein content. chicken is one of those Proteins that sometimes you can eat and sometimes you can't. Microwaving foods make them tuff and sometimes difficult for a bandster. I enjoyed tofu and fish a lot in my early day because their textrue was easily tolerated by my band. First few weeks may be difficult until you learn what to expect but it does get better. I did learn to be creative with Protein powder and egg whites. I added these to my Protein shakes to make sure I got enough protein in my early days, Honestly I wondered in the beginning how I would ever be able to eat that much food but I did and so will you. Good luck to you. -
Agree with unflavored or chocolate or any flavor that hits your fancy. You can add it to vanilla or unflavored yogurt or just about anything mushy. Cottage cheese is fun with the strawberry. Get crazy and put your Protein in. It really helps burn that fat off.

New Anti-Depressant Medication Effect Pouch?
HappyHomeCC replied to McSteph100's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not been banded yet but I am concerned about stuff I am taking, I am taking capsules of prilosec and they kill me when they open up inside my stomach... caplets are easier on me. It says on my pharmacy paper I can open them up onto a soft food but not chew, so I am thinking, yogurt may be the best choice. I am also taking zoloft as of 10 days ago. 50mg I didn't like how I was feeling 6 or 7 days in so I have been breaking them in half vs taking a whole one...... Dr thinks my anxiety issues are creating the acid situation. This is all new to me. Only about 5 weeks ago. My preop endoscopy did not show any thing unusual and the h-pylori was neg. -

I keep an assortment of things like: yogurt, laughing cow cheese wedges, hummus, deli ham, cheese sticks, guacamole. At 2 weeks, I packed refried Beans with cheese, scrambled egg, -
So Nervous!
piercedphoenix replied to piercedphoenix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my sleeve done Monday, the 7th. Definately takes some getting used to. Left the hospital on Tuesday, by Wednesday was off pain meds. Keeping up on the liquids is hard, the vitamins even worse. I am drinking more by the day, and feeling a lot better. The gas pains really suck, and walking does help. Can't wait until my follow up on Monday, I can't wait to eat yogurt and a little bit of an egg!!!! With the pre and post op diet, I am learning that I miss solid food and the taste of real food. The small burps, and bowel gurgles are crazy! -

Sick and my band is too tight, agh!
Living My Dream commented on Living My Dream's blog entry in lwood's Journal
Well I have just experienced bandster hell of another kind. I have been sick with a very sore throat and tired then my band tightened so much I was throwing up in my sleep. Horrible. I tried to just ride it out. I tried to eat softer foods and stop eating a couple of hours before bed. Oh, well, I feel better today. I had chills, aches and headache plus a sick, acidy stomach yesterday. The good news is that I have lost a couple more pounds. I am at 162 lbs this morning. I can't believe it. I am sooooo happy. I am aiming for size 12 or 150, not sure which. I'll see when it happens. I never thought I would ever get down to size 14 again and now it's getting loose. I have been buying new clothes and I am thinking about the shame of it when they don't fit and I will have hardly worn them. Oh well, I'll deal with it when it happens. I can actually buy size medium off the rack now and it fits. I am thrilled. Back to my band, I was thinking that my band must have slipped and I was going to call Slimband clinic this morning. My fill nurse, Nancy, told me that the band tightens when you are sick. I believe it. I feel better today and have had a piece of toast and a yogurt so I am fine. Thank goodness. So if I aim for 150 lbs, I have only 12 lbs left to lose. In 2 decades of dieting off and on, I never got to goal on any program before I started gaining again. Life is good!
