    h. Pylori

I had h. Pylori a year before surgery after having so many troubles from my band. When I started treatment I could not adhere to it because of the terrible metallic taste it have me. So I never took the treatment. Year later I had revision surgery and nothing was ever brought up about it, but untreated h. Pylori can lead to stomach cancer. So if you can side effects be sure to comply with your treatment.

A Month Out from Band Removal

I think I read some where that 70% of lap band patients have it removed within the first 5 - 6 years. I had mine done in August of 2012. I started having issues with it in April 2013. I wound up getting an unfill then refill in April, August, Oct then most recently in Dec. where I had 6 cc taken out of my 7cc, Basically, left with hardly any restriction. During these times, it seemed like almost everything I ate made me burp, and several times throw up. Fast forward, this last time in Dec was awful. I was on vacation in NYC (live in CO), and wound up in the ER for 15 hours. Yup, what a blast. It was confirmed that I had a partial slip, again. The good news, I suppose, is that I've lost 90 pounds while having the band. I'm at 155-156. The bad news, this is considered "elective" surgery so I'm going to owe about $12-$15K after all is said & done. I'm scheduled to have my band removed, and a revision to the sleeve this Thursday. I'm quite nervous about not having much of a stomach left. I'm on full liquids starting today. Not liking it! I'm not sure how tomorrow will go at work with full liquids. Trying to stay focused on the big picture, so I don't get hungry. Any suggestions?

A Month Out from Band Removal

Hi there! I issues with the lap band as well, I was always using the restroom with it and caused more harm then it did good. I regained all my weight back that I lost and plus some, but I had a revision surgery to the sleeve. Way to go on losing 5 pounds since surgery!

    Alcohol? Carbonated bevs?

26 months ago, June 3, 2009 was my date for band to VSG revision. I had the band placed October 2008, and had been researching, reading, absorbing everything I could since early 2007.

Just starting my 6 month supervised diet

Welcome. It depends on a lot of things. And you need to discuss it worth your doctor. I am having the vertical sleeve(vsg) on March 2nd. For me after research on here and online I liked it cause I wasn't completely rerouting my system and I have allot of weight to lose. Im only doing this once so I don't want a band revision in the future so that's one of the reasons I didn't choose the band. The surgery is a tool. How much our little you lose will depend on you and your body. If you eat things you shouldn't then you won't lose as much. If you stick to a high protein low carb diet then you should do well

    Long period

Keep a close eye on it.....I thought I started my cycle in late Dec, 2020 (about a week before my revision, sleeve to bypass) and since I have PCOS and the flow was light, I didn't think anything of it until August when it still didn't stop. I had a endometrial biopsy----came back as cancer. I had a total hysterectomy in early October. Cancer had spread beyond the uterus to an ovary and peritoneum- Stage 3B, just had round 2 of 6 Chemo cycles and after that I have 5 weeks of radiation.......so if your cycle is not normal for you.....check it out!

Is it dumping or just upset stomach

I developed allergies to foods and lactose intolerance after both of my surgeries. After my sleeve, I developed a NASTY shellfish allergy and lactose intolerance. After my revision to bypass, I developed an allergy to peanuts and an allergy to the surgical glue they used. Surgery can do weird things to the body. Major surgery like this throws the body WAY out of whack.
  10. There are a few long timers but most don't post here anymore. I revised from band 2.5 years ago after 10 years banded. I have had great success with sleeve...if you click on my profile you can see details.

Moving To Soft Food Phase Help!

Sleevers here..if anyone here had a band most have revised to sleeve. Not sure you'll receive many responses since this is a gastric sleeve site. But welcome and good luck. Im sure some of the info here is useful to you as well.
  12. In 2012 I had the gastric sleeve procedure, it was very successful until several events in my life caused me to slip back into old habits. Adding to that, my surgeon closed his practice and I had no one to follow up with locally. The old habits and lack of Followup care led to the weight slowly creeping back on. Since my sleeve procedure I’ve been diagnosed with RA which I have under control for about the past year or more. Earlier this year I began experiencing severe acid reflux and my PCP suggested I see the new BS who had just come to town. The BS advised me (after scoping me) that I have a hiatal hernia that needs to be repaired. He also recommended that I have a revision to the bypass. Fast forward three months and several pre-op tests later and I receive a call from the doctors nurse telling me that the doctor has decided it’s best not to do the conversion to bypass because I have arthritis and take methotrexate. She goes in to explain, the doctor thinks the risk of ulcers from medication and the possibility of slow healing outweigh the possible benefits. I am a 38 year old otherwise healthy female with her RA well controlled. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this before? Has anyone had the conversion to bypass who was diagnosed with RA before their conversion? I’m incredibly frustrated and not sure what do to from this point. Any advice you can share would be much appreciated.
  13. Your story is almost duplicated to mine. So I chose to go to the Mayo Clinic… this started the beginning of my journey to a revision from the sleeve. Its scary but Ive come to accept it is the only choice for me. Im not currently taking any meds as my RA is in remission
  14. I got my lapband in 2012 and got down to 206 from a high of 293. When I complained about my horrendous reflux the doctor took the fluid out of the band. The reflux eased up but I put on 50 pounds very quickly. I am in the process of qualifying for revision surgery. Federal BCBS requires the whole program again to qualify for the revision to bypass. In my case the revision is totally considered bariatric surgery.

What is the max fill in a 9cc realize band

There is no such thing as "every doctor has different limits" The FDA guidelines for all gastric bands are there for a reason. The band instructions specifically states several times NOT to fill it past 9cc's or it can break. Posting something like that can be very dangerous and should not be rationalized. The max fill is 9cc's. PERIOD. If it breaks and was filled past 9cc's your insurance company reserves the right not to replace it as it was not used within FDA guidelines. The Surgeon can practice medicine as he sees fit however your insurance company will always look for an out not to pay. I understand your frustration but to protect yourself, get it in writing from the surgeon and your insurance company that if the band is filled past the FDA guidelines if it breaks your surgery will be covered under a revision. This way your at least covered. If you have no restriction now imagine if leaks all the Fluid out!

    Why am I soooooo hungry??

You said you're revision? Sleeve to SIPS did you say? Were you hungry after your sleeve as well? Did they touch your sleeve this time? Sorry for these questions. Just asking because I'm a revision as well (MGB to RNY) and have a really hard time battling the cravings this time.

    NSV'S

I am feeling better about things. I am thinking I might actually revise my one day a week weigh ins...to only stepping on the scale when I go to the doctor. I've been thinking about it and I have been doing everything I have been told. When it is a month from now and still no weight loss..then I will worry. I don't want to obsess over the scale...so I think I am just going to FREE myself from that which binds me...THE SCALE...and just focus on working out, and eating right. Joatsaint...yes it feels amazing...I can't wait until I have to pull out a smaller size...soon...soon.
  18. No, I don't have that experience. I am a lap band revision and my old port site is a little tender if I push on it, but I heard that is normal. You should call your doctor just in case and make sure there is no damage.
  19. I just had this done on Monday just the standard Upper GI with the barium. I am fine and so is the band. I requested to have this done becuase I seen a new Dr. not the one that did my band. Several months after my last fill I developed night reflux and coughing. So I went to see the new Dr. this is what he told me and mind you I did not yet have the barium test at that time. He told me that my band was too tight. He told me that I ahd a Mega Esophagus (dialited)he also told me that my esophagus is going to burst and that I could die it that happened. He also told me that my original surgeon would have to do my operation (revision) well scared me he did..so much that I was afraid to eat thinking that my esophagus could burst. How can a Dr. tell you all of that without even running the test to begin with (x-ray vision) I guess. Well he did take 1 cc out of my band. He also told me that I had a fill of 7 ccs in my band but in my medcial records from my original Dr. it stated that I had 5 1/4 ccs then on the date of the unfill as I call it he said I ahd 6 1/2 ccs well comone now which is t Dr.? I will not give any names to protect myself here but I really feel that this man has no right being a Bariatric Surgeon if he is only going to guess and assume that there is a problem when there is none at all. I had my Upper GI and well low and behold everything is fine. The contrast went right down, the esophagus is that of normal size. I ahd a wonderful conversation with the radiogogist that did the test and I have had so many that I can tell if something is not right and even he said he could not see a problem with the band or much less anything else. sorry to be so long winded here but it makes me very mad when someone cannot get the job done right.
  20. WLS is mega serious. Like you say it changes the digestive system. It shouldn't be seen as the be all and end all. For most people it is phychological and professional help is required whether you want it or not. There are a lot of resources out there, so jsut a matter of finding them and asking for help. I had the sleeve and woke up thinking what the hell have I done. I revised to rny because of reflux and preventing any chance of throat cancer which my grandpa died of. If my reflux wasn't so bad and wasn't causing me problems I would have stayed with sleeve. Also had another hiatus hernia that needed reparing. When I woke up from RNY saying what the hell have I done. When making such drastic decisions, we all need to use a logical approach. Write down pros and cons. Do the possible benefits outweight the possible complications. Are you prepared for the worse, whatever, that is for you. I made sure I had my will updated. I also thought about what would happen if I had too stay in hospital for months on end. For those who have families what and how would WLS affect it. Also work wise how will it affect you - eating small meals and people asking qs or giving you a hard time? Try not too worry too much. Keep positive.

    Independence Day Challenge

Today is the first day I can test my "fill". The revision went great on Friday. So far I have just maintained - that's for the last two weeks. I go back to Dr. B. on 6/24 for my post-surgery follow-up. I'm hoping he will do a fill then if I need it. My stomach has been making some weird noises this morning! How is everyone else?
  22. I am wondering how common it is to have a revision from bypass to sleeve? I see a lot of the opposite.. I had my bypass done 7 years ago and lost 125lbs, got down to 145lbs, then got pregnant within the 1st year. I am now up to 215lbs and the dr said my stomach is still the right size but the opening into the stomach is very large now. They have suggested and scheduled this revision from bypass to sleeve for Oct 14th. Hoping to find others who have had this type of revision.

Need To Hear From The Veterans

If you had been banded chances are you would have lost some but not all your weight or perhaps none at all as the band is hard to perfectly adjust and most people find they are not crazy about the new feelings that come from being banded. If you were banded you would never feel "full" you would stop eating when the pain in your chest/shoulder or back told you too. If you were banded you would have many foods that refused to go through the band and you thew them up instead. If you were banded chances are you would have reflux from food being stuck in your pouch. You may spend countless nights sitting up because laying was too painful because you ate something within 3 hours of going to bed. Your band could embed deep into your stomach or perhaps decide to fuse to your liver. If you were banded food you ate yesterday with no problem may cause you pain and suffering today. AND I say all this as someone who loved my band, and lost all my weight !! But I know it's not a good option for anyone. If you were banded you would at some point need a revision. All WLS is a gamble, none is without consequences.
  24. I went to my Surgeon because he had thousands of lapband surgeries performed successfully. He also does sleeve and by pass. I did not want my intestines re-routed and a large portion of my stomach removed or stapled. the sleeve seems to be the flavor of the week, everyone is rushing to get it. I think over time there will be as many issues with the sleeve as people claim there are with the band. no surgery is 100% guaranteed. I chose the band because I wanted an option of removal or revision if needed. the follow up care has been good for me. I haven't had a fill in 6 months or more, haven't had any issues with my band. I have lost what I wanted and slowly , never lost my hair, never had dumping syndrome or malnutrition. I only take 3 Vitamins a day, B12,D3 and a Multivitamin. I am no longer on diabetic meds, high cholesterol or high blood pressure. I pray that I never have to have my band removed but I will most likely have it replaced if needed. All in all we all have to make the best decision we can for our own health.

    One week Pre-Op

Congrats to you for being prepared mentally. I am very similar to you, I weighed 222 when I started the preop diet. I will be 48 tomorrow. I am thinking 125 but I have revised to 130-140 based on my body shape-125 might be to skinny for my build. I always made sure I had something to drink and when I had to cook for my husband-I drink some chicken broth prior to cooking so I did not get hungry. Also my husband let go out shopping a lot so he could eat while I was gone. Good luck - before you know it you will be on the other side.
