Re-Sleeve or Sleeve to Bypass / DS
RickM replied to miss_smiles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If your insurance doesn't have any restrictions on the number of WLS per lifetime (some limit to one WLS per lifetime) then the usual insurance rules generally apply - BMI of 40 and above, or 35 with comorbidities. So, that's the good news - if you were covered before and have regained to that point, then you should be covered again. The bad news that you probably don't want to hear is that it won't likely do you much good in the long term, unless there was something seriously defective with your first procedure that needs to be corrected. Changing to a bypass may get you back on track again for a while, but ultimately you will be in the same position as the two procedures are very similar in overall strength or outcome. Think of your WLS as more of a "do-over" than a metabolic reset - it gives you the chance to get things in order to live sustainably and maintain your weight, but it doesn't do it for you. While I don't agree with everything this doc says, he is one of the few that acknowledges that our meal capacity will increase over time (to around half of our pre-op capacity), and has a viable prescription for living with that fact. His numbers are consistent with my experience over the years. Also, that sleeve/pouch size has little to do with long term capacity or success - my wife has a huge sleeve on VSG terms (from her DS, which typically uses a sleeve of about twice the size of a stand alone VSG sleeve,) and our meal sizes are pretty much the same several years out. It is very much a matter of food choices and habits rather than absolute restriction minimizing how much we eat. A good part of the game here is matching the right procedure with the patient - think in terms of the WLS procedures having somewhat different personalities, and you have to find the right "fit", just as you do with friends and associates. The RNY isn't any mover powerful overall than the VSG, but may be a better fit for you. Or it may not - research and talk to as many people with the bypass as you can to see if it is right for you, as one of its' drawbacks is that it is very difficult to revise to something else if it doesn't fit. With either procedure, it would not be uncommon for women of average and below height to maintain in the 1000-1200 calorie range long term. If you are having problems at 12-1500 calories now, a bypass or resleeve isn't going to help much if you can't find a way to maintain at whatever level your metabolism dictates. The DS does offer a better metabolic kick long term and may be your best option if you can't make the long term diet/lifestyle adjustments to make the VSG work; its' caloric malabsorption is long term vs the bypass which sees its caloric malabsorption dissipate after a year or two.. But it requires more serious commitment to supplementing and follow up lab work for life (that's part of its' "personality" that you have to live with. But I have seen many be successful over 10-20 years with it, often eating a less than "ideal" diet. -
Dr Grimaldi at Affordable Weightloss in MX for MGB
AmberGrey posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi. Anyone have revision surgery from sleeve to MGB due to GERD? I'm considering Dr Jesus Enrique Grimaldi at Affordable Weightloss in Tijuana. Have you heard anything about him? What surgeon did you use? -
I had sleeve to bypass. 2011 sleeve 2016 revision to bypass due to acid reflux.

I'm a revision from sleeve to bypass with a surgery date of 03/07 but haven't found anyone in my boat. Plenty of band to bypass but that's it and there's no 2017 options in the monthly groups. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hey girl! I will be getting a revision from sleeve to bypass on 4/24. I have been searching for info, but not much out there. Do you know what to expect as far as this starting weight loss back up, and if it will help with restriction again? Missy

I want to hear from others with a lower BMI pre-op
bearhugs1975 replied to Midemali's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
My BMI is 33. I will be sleeved on the 20th of October. I will have 60lbs to lose. Excited for this new journey. I am a revision from Lap Band. -
Hey everyone! Just wanted to see if anyone else has found out they're band intolerant? I've been having really bad bouts of constantly vomiting for awhile, and it has gotten to the point I'm vomiting up white mucus and blood clots. I went to my doctor's office that did the surgery, and they checked the band to see if it slipped, and it hadn't. So then 2 weeks later I had an upper endo by the same doctor. The procedure he said only took 4 minutes, and the band hadn't eroded. So it hasn't slipped, or eroded, however, I have all the symptoms that would make you think so. I can't hold down majority of solids now, and liquids are questionable. My band is completely unfilled at this point. I am working on trying to get an appointment with a gastroenterologist to get their opinion on it. I am really starting to think my body has just rejected it. I have stomach inflammation, and they biopsied a bacteria but didn't tell me what it was. All I got was,"maybe it's your gallbladder, you should get that checked out." I told them to do it when I was in the hospital after the endoscopy just to get it out of the way, but they wouldn't. My band physically hurts, and I don't know what really to do. My symptoms are just getting worse...and revision may be my only option to fix it, but I don't have the money for self-pay and my insurance won't cover bariatric surgery. But if anyone else has had intolerance, it would be nice to get your input. Thank you

Anyone not just stalled, but gained, weight Post-op week 2-3?
KimTriesRNY replied to GB2018's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I agree with Matt. Also, as a revision surgery you are likely to not lose as quickly someone who is having a bariatric surgery for the first time. Let your body heal and follow the program and you will see results! -
Am I the only person that just doesn't tell the person I am interested in about my surgery? I had the lapband for five years and just had it revised to bypass. Dating has always been awkward and i dread dinner dates. I hate being stared at by the guy and asked why I am eating so slow or why I didn't eat so much. Or even worse when I had the band the constant running I the bathroom to "cough", up food. I was embarrassed of the weight I had gained that caused me to get the band in the first place and even more embarrassed when I still wasn't as skinny as I thought I should be.

Revise now or try to get back on track with the band
serious replied to brittu's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Brit, You've come on a VSG forum where several of us, Wasa, Vamp, Elisabeth, Susan etc. are revisions from the band to VSG. So, I think all of us are probably going to tell you the same thing; revise to a VSG. I myself, feel like once you start having problems, to get another band is a waste of time. I think the research, especially after a slip, bears this out. Ultimately, it is your decision. Do your research, talk with your physician and do what you feel in your gut is right for you. I was banded in December of 2006, and was just revised in March. I was self pay with the band, and I was self pay with the sleeve. I did not have any problems with a slip or erosion, it just was not the right surgery for me. Still, I researched and read for almost two years before I came to the decision to revise, because I needed to be comfortable with my decision. Keep asking questions, and good luck with whatever you decide. -
6/28: I'm in control of what I can control... So very very true. I need to be revised to RNY for GERD. At first I was was shocked, then all for it, then felt like it was totally my fault but testing confirmed it was nothing i could have done to prevent it. So far im totally just rolling with it until its a reality. It feels surreal for sure. Especially doing a 2 week preop diet while being at goal 😭 but ... C'est la vie 6/29: My past doesn't define me, but helps me remember the future I'm fighting for 6/30: June has been a whirlwind for me, not necessarily bad but definitely filled with some... moments I'll never forget I truly appreciate you @Cheeseburgh for throwing an amazing party in here... the Skalender tried to kill us in the end 😭😂 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

Does any know the criteria for Tufts for a revision from sleeve to bypass? I suffer from terrible reflux and need some relief. The medication doesn't work anymore. I do not fit the BMI and I don't have diabetes, sleep apnea or cardiovascular issues. Thank you Sent from my LGLS991 using BariatricPal mobile app

10 days pre-op. Advice?
ribearty replied to johnblanks's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi John, I certainly am not a vet to the sleeve but had a band for over 6 years which is probably longer than most here with the sleeve. I am 3 days post-op. Surgery was Friday 10/25. So far I have had some pain but nothing that pain meds didn't take care of. One bout of nausea but got a shot and it was over as quickly as it began. I have not had gas pains, I had a lap band and port removed and the sleeve performed in one procedure. My surgery took two hours. I am very fortunate and hope to have a smooth recovery. I had a catheter for the 1st day and also had a jp drain which was taken out before I left the hospital. These were only because I was a revision patient, but different doctors do different things. Do what your doctor says follow the diet and you should be good. Good luck. I'm sure you'll do fine. -
It is not allowed by my doctor (lap band) and won't be after I have revision surgery. I had to quit drinking soda for other medical reasons, and then had one after a year or so of not drinking any, and it tasted awful.

I’m freshly home from the hospital after gastric bypass revision surgery (after a failed lap band). I feel pretty bad still though. Wondered if others had similar issues after: Diarrhea Nausea Impossible to sleep in a comfy position Groggy and in/out Trouble getting in the 4oz per hour Would love to hear your stories. Also, what did you take for nausea? I have the omeprazole for the acid and am taking Tylenol for pain. But the nausea is pretty bad, as in the diarrhea.

Anyone not just stalled, but gained, weight Post-op week 2-3?
GB2018 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi Everyone! I posted this similar post on a reply another post, but I thought I would start a new post. I had a gastric sleeve 3/14/2016. I had a sleeve to bypass revision on 7/30/18 due to reflux and nausea, and to try to get me closer to my goal. I am post-op 15 days. I lost 14 pounds from 1 week pre-op and 1 week post-op clear liquid diet. I started full liquids on 8/5/2018 and started pureed (Mashables) two days ago, 8/12/18. I am staying around 60-70 grams of Protein per day and about 450-650 calories. I am struggling a little bit with getting my fluids in... I'm around 50 ounces per day of Water. The day I started full liquids (actually taking in any calories) I stopped losing any weight. I have now gained 3.6 pounds since Sunday, 8/5/18. My NUT told me yesterday that my body is holding on to every calorie right now and it will change in time. I am a little frustrated. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I would love to hear y'all's feedback! -
Anyone not just stalled, but gained, weight Post-op week 2-3?
Matt Z replied to GB2018's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Good call on this one, @GB73018 us revisions tend to lose slower overall, just something else to watch out for and be ready for mentally. Even being aware of it, like I was, didn't prepare me for the frustration of watching others drop weight hand over fist while I just keep slowly losing. But rest assured, if you keep yourself on track, you'll lose the weight just fine, it just might not seem as drastic as those that didn't have a WLS already. -
I have Anthem BCBS, and I got denied for a revision, they said I am allowed one bariatric surgery per lifetime. They did not pay for my Lap Band, so I dont understand. I am gonna go talk to my Dr today he is supposed to do Peer to Peer review, I need this lap band removed, it has severely eroded and I vomit daily. I cant live like this anymore. I have severe apnea as well. Wish me luck!!!

This Is Just So Frustrating! Doctor Selection....
sherlee replied to Sarah35's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I chose Dr. Kelly also, I had surgery on Tuesday and leave TJ this morning. When I got here there was a girl that was leaving that had a revision and she looked amazing. Her revision was supposedly a tough one but she seemed to be at the same place as the rest of us 3 days out. I had no pain and very little nausea, I stopped taking the pain mess and anti nausea meds at day two. There were 5 of us done over the period of time that I was here and all have had the same experience. I chose Dr Kelly bc I felt comfortable with all of the phone conversations we had prior, he has American credentials that my own physicians checked out, he does not work with the brokers, I did not have to send any money before hand. Those were my main reasons, everyone's is going to be different. If you speak to Dr. Kelly remember that he does not work with brokers so if you are contacted besides anyone but Omar then you are not actually talking to Dr Kelly. The brokers are playing not so fair. -

Calories and being discouraged
Madeleine Renee replied to Cervidae's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So you have the ''breakfast food'' plus 2 Premier shakes a day? Seems to me like a lot of calories. Double check with your surgeon's recommendation, 1,800 cal a day is a fairly large amount at this point. If you have a nutritionist, you could revise with her. -

My band ended up giving me Grade 3 Esophagitis, I had no idea either, it wasn't until I had the upper endoscopy to make sure there was no erosion with the band before my revision that I found out I had a moderate to severe esophagial damage... Now, heartburn and other burning issues are totally gone!
