  1. Hello everyone, I'm a newbie to this site. I’m having a Revision from RNY to RNY 08/15/16 making my current pouch of 8 oz (1 cup) to a 1.5 oz pouch. Due to enlarged stoma of 3.5 centimeters big. My surgeon told me that I may not lose as much weight as before. Because must people who had revision lose little to no weight, but the issues will be fix. I don’t understand how I will not loss weight with a new smaller pouch. As long, as I eat healthy, watch portion size, exercise, stay motivated and have a great support system. Which I do. Can someone offer their opinion or been through this situation their self? My pouch been 8 ounces for the last 9 years. 3 years ago I start gaining weight and I would look at what I was doing and notice I ate more and the weight came on. And all this is because of the enlarge stoma, malabsorption and weight gain.
  2. I would think long and hard about this decision. I had the revisions and coming to terms to accept my decision. It's incredibly difficult. I need to stop wishing I could go back in time. You can't reverse this like the lapband. That might sound good...but what ig something goes wrong. Acid reflux issues are real and they impact your life quality. Your young, can you live for the next 40 or 50 yrs without the majority of your stomach? Is it rational to destroy a healthy organg for weight loss when regain is real. Ppl do regain. All the best

    Revision surgery

some insurance companies will cover revisions, and some only cover one surgery per lifetime. I have a friend who's had horrible problems with her 10-year-old lap band the last couple of years, but her insurance company refuses to cover a revision. of those companies that cover revisions, some will only cover them for some medical reason, like GERD or a mechanical flaw with the surgery, but not for regain (but some might cover for regain - not sure, though). the only way to know for sure if yours will cover it is to give them a call. I would imagine some might cover it - but some won't.
  4. I am relatively new here. Sorry that this is so long. I am starting the process of revision. I met with my surgeon who is great and told him that I wanted the band removed and probably convert to sleeve. I was extremely successful with the band and lost 100% of my excess body weight about 8 years ago and maintained for 3 years. I had two babies and due to severe morning sickness had to take 1/2 the Fluid out my band for each. For the first pregnancy I gained a ton of weight (70lbs) but lost all of it but 20lbs within a year before I got pregnant again. After the second baby (3 years ago) I have not been able to lose weight at all. I am now almost up to my pre-surgery weight. I have been struggling with the past 2 years with fills - my upper GI showed mild enlarged esophagus which returned to normal when fill was removed. Bottom line I realize now that the only way that the band worked for me so well was when it was extremely tight and it controlled my hunger. I don't think that this was o healthily and I don't think I can do this anymore without irritating and enlarging my esophagus. I prefer the sleeve over the bypass because I think restriction works well for me. I asked my surgeon about the esophagus problem and he said that it was being caused by the band and should not be a problem with the sleeve since my enlargement is very mild. I had an endoscopy and the GI doctor said the same thing - that I am in good shape and there is no reason for me not to have the surgery. Can someone explain to me why you do not get an enlarged esophagus with the sleeve? I do not understand the mechanics and I don't have another appointment with the surgeon for a month. Also can someone explain what it feels like to be full with the sleeve? With the band I got a painful feeling. When my esophagus was enlarging I was able to eat a lot and it sort of felt like it was in my throat. Does this happen with the sleeve? I am worried that I am "used" to the feeling of food in my throat and the sleeve will not work for me. I am probably being neurotic here! I want to state also that I completely trust my surgeon and he is world renowned at a top teaching hospital in NY. I just want to understand how this works! The surgeon said the sleeve is the way to go for me over the bypass. Thanks!

    Revision question

What did you revise to? I'm in the same pre-open condition with a 2005 rny and Dr wants to revise to sleeve.
  6. my opinion is If you were banded and for whatever reason you were unsuccessful in losing all the weight that you needed to lose, having the band removed and revising to another weight loss surgery is one's own preference. whether you've failed the band or it failed you, as it was mentioned, everyone is different. There is no need to shut the gate after the horse gets out.
  7. Hello, all.... After extensive research, I've decided to revise from band to sleeve in Mexico. I was banded in 2005, and want to know about the issues with scar tissue. I have read some posts here where some people had a lot of scar tissue, but the surgeon completed the revision. While other surgeons didn't complete the revision because of scar tissue. For those of you who had your band over 10 years, and revised to sleeve, what was your experience with the scar tissue? Does it develop because of he length of time the band is in place? Or does it develop based on the person's body? Any insight is appreciated.
  8. FDclerical I had revision from sleeve to bypass Nov.22,2016.If they need to repair Hiatal Hernia I don't think you will be singing.Otherwise going good.

    Kaiser SO CAL? Surgeons

Hey, had band removal, sleeve revision & hernia fixed on 5/20 by Dr. Chin out of the Redlands office. Loved it! I'm down 15 so far, and the after care has been awesome. I would also recommend getting involved with the support group out in Fontana at the weight management center. My stay at St. Bees was good and am up and around doing well. The Kaiser program is WAY better than I had with my banding experience. Education is the key and they help in all capacities with that. Good luck.
  10. so i have my surgery scheduled for the day after thanksgiving. im having my lapband removed and revised the the sleeve. i went for preop testing and tested positive for H pylori. Had to start a round of heavy duty antibiotics and now my surgery might be postponed. :-( Very upsetting. and i am wondering why if its routine to check for this before this type of surgery my doctor waited so long to check me for it? Feeling Furious! anyone out there find out they had hpylori in there preop testing and how long did it take to clear up? (its a bacteria in the stomach that causes infection in the lining of your stomach, my level wasnt very high so the infection must not be that bad )
  11. I had severe acid reflux (GERD). As a result, this is a recommended surgery because the sleeve will only make the condition worse. Also, RNY gastric bypass is almost a gold standard. It has been around a lot longer and they have for the most part got the bugs worked out. It has one of the lowest revision rates and I decided if I underwent the knife once, I sure would not want to repeat the experience.
  12. My biggest fear is regain with all the talk from people about the lack of restriction they feel post vsg to rny revision. I would prefer to keep maintaining close to my current weight as it is a place I am happy with.
  13. I had my rny in January. Only a couple months later I started to develop ulcers. Last week I went to the ER with increased pain to find that even with treatment I had one ulcer that had perforated. I had to have an emergency revision. I can totally relate as I dropped 10 lbs in one week and the pain has definitely been more intense. I also had some constipation issues so they gave me magnesium citrate which helped. This has been hard because I was just feeling like a normal human after 6 months and I literally am starting over 😂 I hope you have a speedy recovery!
  14. Yes. My insurance covered both my original surgery as well as my revision.
  15. 3 days post op from revision and hiatal hernia repair. Way more pain this time than before. My surgeon said I could try a protein shake tomorrow but I am having pain eating a sugar free jello. So far the best things have been sugar free Popsicles and twinings comfort tea with a little stevia. I am wearing a binder and using a cane to walk around the house due to the abdominal pain. I have not felt any gerd yet so hopefully it stays away.
  16. I had absolutely terrible constipation post revision too! I also had an enema then stayed on laxatives for a long time, under the supervision of my surgeon of course. (I was so afraid of constipation again that I think I stayed on them a lot longer than I should have. In fact I am finally lax free using a stool softener only when necessary. But I’m happy to report that the plumbing still works on it’s own 👍🏽) Speedy Recovery!
  17. Just wanted to get some feedback on my progress. I had a port revision on Oct 29. At the time of surgery There were 4CC put in my band. Since then I have had 3 fills. My last fill was Monday Jan 2 for a total of 6.5CC. Prior to the last fill this past monday I have been at a plateu with my weight. The scale does not move below 243lbs. Obviously with this last fill it is to early to tell, but prior to this one I was having signs of some restrictions, still able to eat anything. I am just wondering if anyone has experience the same thing. I guess my question is why am I not loosing weight. I am tracking everything I am eating staying within about 1200 cals a day. Exercising 3-4 times a week and My weight is not budgeting. To date I have lost about 15lbs.. When should I start seeing results??? I am really starting to get frustrated but trying to keep it positive. I am really hoping, this fill gives me what i need to get a push. I have a realize J&J band. Any suggestions????

    I am so fucking... Frustrated!!

Wow, I would say that it is still worth it. I am sure that the port revision will not be as bad as the whole surgery. Good luck!

Well I am back.. I have been discouraged!

I had my surgery on 9/24/09 I went in for my first fill in Nov. and found out that my port was at an angle that I was unable to receive my first fill. I now have to have it revised.. I go in for pretesting tomorrow and will have the revision on 1/11/10. I am very discouraged and have not been exercising and just eating what I want but small portions. My weight at the time of surgery was 252 lbs and as of today I am still at 229 lbs. Has anyone had this type of experience and how do you get back on track. I am angry because the surgery and healing time went so well but I did not expect to have a revision so soon after surgery!

First Official Fill and not doing good!

To make a long story short 252 lbs at the time of surgery on 9/24/09. First fill scheduled for 11/17 but found that port had flipped. Revision on 1/14/10. My current weight is 218 and I had my first fill on 3/1/10. I have been on liquids since. but barely.. they tried 2cc but it was too tight and took someout so I believe that I have a bit of 1 cc.. and the liquid is so hard to go down.. I am going to try to go on mushies for dinner tonight because I am so starving!! does anyone have any suggestions? Also the protein was too dense to go down as well.
  24. My name is Virginia and I had the LapBand Surgery on May 21st 2007. From that date until somewhere in August all was well, I was losing weight and feeling pretty good, except for one major issue. I began having gas. Not the 'oops excuse me' gas but full blown explosions that resulted in much embarrassment and stomach bloating. My husband and I work together and car pool to work or it would have been a much worst experience than it already was, because on the ride home at night I had gas so bad I felt I was in labor. I began doing research on the LapBand and gas and could not find much on it. I started to eliminate different foods from my diet like milk, beans, etc... I made sure I didn't drink from a straw, I made sure I didn't eat too late at night, the list of what I tried went on and on. So during one of my fills in September I told my surgeon that the gas was getting to be too much for me to deal with and I didn't know what to do about it. He said that no way was it the band that was causing this gas, that it had to be my food. Well as the days pass and my gas gets more and more uncomfortable something interesting happened in October. I got a fill that was too tight. Needless to say I had to go in for an unfill and that unfill was still too tight so I went in for another unfill and this time my doctor took out 1.5cc and I was left with absolutely no restriction. I decided that since I had a terrible Thanksgiving I would just leave things alone for awhile and get back to it after the New Year. Now here is the interesting part, during the time I had no restriction my gas all but went away. I ate anything I wanted, dairy, beans, veggies and even stuff I should have never eaten but since I was in a loving life to the fullest mood I ate sweets, fast food and my wonderful ice cream. I gained 17 pounds during this time and I have no regrets. I was gas free and comfortable for the first time in months. But of course all good things must come to an end. On January 12th I made an appointment for a fill and while my doctor was doing the fill I told him that if I got my gas back that I would be coming in with a request to have the band removed. I felt as though he didn't take me seriously all those months and the minute I said I wanted the band out all of a sudden he was all concerned. No one believed me that I KNEW the band was the cause for my discomfort. Needless to say the gas came back full force. Two weeks later, with a ton of research in hand and food logs I went back to him and told him that I wanted the band removed and I wanted him to do the RNY on me. I had been researching it for months and I was not willing to just have the band removed and go it alone, I wanted something to take its place and I choose the RNY. He read over what I had brought to him and when he was finished he said okay. His biggest concern was, he stuck to the fact that he has done 'a thousand' LapBand procedures and I was the first to complain about gas this far out. Well I guess there always has to be a first. I agreed to another endoscopy and colonoscopy. As soon as all that came back clear my surgery date was given and believe it or now Yesterday March 17th marked three weeks post-op. What I would like to add is my Surgeon(s) Dr. Michael Orris and Dr. John DeBarros via the Weight Loss Institute of Arizona. When I first had my LapBand surgery last May, both these surgeons took my insurance. Somewhere along the line, Dr. DeBarros decided to drop Aetna and therefore I was only able to see Dr. Orris for all my fills. That was okay because it really didn't matter. However, when it came time to do my revision, since both these doctors work hand in hand I was forced to pay out of pocket for Dr. DeBarros. I don't think this was right but I paid what they asked anyway. One of my biggest complaints that I have had since I walked though their door is you can expect a good two hour wait to get into see either doctor. By the time I went in for my last few visits all I could think about was how grateful I was going to be when I didn't have to go there any longer. There were times when so many people were complaining about the wait time that several just walked out. I don't feel I was taken seriously when I complained about my gas and I know I wasn't treated with respect when it came to my appointments. Some times it was as long as 4 hours in that office. Now that I have had the RNY I will not have to go back for three months. Anyway, this is my story, I wanted to share it with you. If you are having any kind of issues with your Band and you feel you have done everything you can to make it work, make sure you yell, kick and scream if you have to, to be heard. Now I am on a different road and it has been a long slow recovery, I am still not back to work. The area where the port was is still very sore due to the cutting of the muscle that the port was attached to. My surgery took 4 hours because of scar tissue. I can't tell you all if it was worth it or not at this point in time, but I will try and pop in from time to time and give you updates. Please feel free to ask me anything, I would love to help. virginiann@cox.net
