    mourning food

I know exactly how you feel! I got sleeved on the 8th and am on full liquids. I start puréed tomorrow. But the first few weeks I been craving foods that I never even ate before my procedure. It will get better this sounds weird but when I'm feeling hungry or craving real food, I like to look up recipes for the next stage and see all the things I will be able to eat very soon and then it's kind of exciting good luck!

    Insurance Question

I have United as well, and it took about 3 weeks before I got my approval letter. My BMI was 37, but I have sleep apnea and some other problems that might have counted. I was worried that my BMI wasn't high enough (ha ha), but I guess my company paid for decent coverage! Yay! I don't think United usually requests 6-month diets or anything.

    Gaining during surgery

My advice is to not even step on the scale at least for a week or two. The same thing happened to me and I also hardly lost anything for the first 3 weeks so then I became really upset that the sleeve wasn't going to work on me. Then finally I started losing and I've lost 30 pounds and I'm 6 weeks out on Wednesday. Stay off the scale until you start noticing your clothes starting to get loose!
  5. Ok, you cannot weigh yourself multiple times per day and expect meaningful results. Think about it, get a kitchen scale and measure a glass with 8oz of beverage in it, now weigh it empty. That is how much Fluid weighs. Now, consider how many oz of different density fluids you drink in a day, and subtract random bowel movements and urinations. Come on, get real, the old adage "you don't gain weight from the food you eat pound by pound", well that is only half the story. One pound is 3500 calories; period. Rapid weight loss immediately before and after surgery is surrounded by a little sleight of hand. Your colon cleanse emptied your intestines of much weight. Your stay in the hospital dehydrated you, even more weight. So that is instant gratification, anyone can do that; it is called a CRASH DIET. Where we are making the long-term gains is by maintaining a calorie deficit. If you only ingest 500-800 calories per day now, and you were maintaining prior to surgery with 2500-3000 calories, then there is our real goal. We have deducted 1500-2000 calories and you should lose about a pound every other day. Once you begin exercising and keep this same calorie intake, you will lose even more, it is that simple. This surgery is NOT a magic bullet that just sheds the pounds away, it is a tool to help control your appetite, and change your eating lifestyle for the rest of your life. Be positive because you know you will lose 1-3+ pounds per week (provided you eat based on your dietician's advice) for the rest of the time you are overweight. Remember all of the DIETS that have failed you in the past, be positive about this tool and let it work for you. I am weighing myself once per week; on a Tuesday morning, after my BM before I take my meds. That way it will be consistent, I can look forward to it, and it will be true loss and not just a bad hydration moment.

    Nov 17th- Am I ready?

Well your story sounds alot like mine. I was 5foot6 225 pounds and I paid 4 my own surgery on 10/18. I am also an emotional eater but Im not about to throw away all the money I invested in myself. I didnt go on a liquid diet till the two days before my surgery because I didnt know I was substo. I didnt start reading this sight till about 1 week after my surgery and Im glad that I didnt read it before. I only focus on the negative and I overlook the positive messages on this sight. I havent throwen up at all and I followed the diet that they assigned me post surgery.(and it wasnt that hard) I had a very ruff 1st week, but after that it was great. Ive lost 20 pounds and Im feeling great. Im sure this will all change after my first fill but Im glad I did it and I dont regret it at all. Hope this helped, good luck!!

My surgery isnt until a week before Christmas...and I cant wait! I want to start packing now but that would be ridiculous, right? Yeah..I am counting the days. My husband knows but no one else so I wonder how I will get away with Thanksgiving...hmmm. Ill come up with a game plan until then. Best of luck to all of us in this journey...and I look forward to meeting everyone..online or at the reunion... One question: when does it hit you? That you will have the surgery and that the rest of your life begins??

    PBing??

OMG, the most embarassing thing just happened to me at the store. I went food shopping for the next stage with my father this morning and while walking down an aisle I got that same feeling again like something was gonna come up, I let out this huge burp which was so loud and un-ladylike. Three people in the aisle turned around to see who it came from. I whispered sorry, grabbed my mouth in one hand and my stomach in the other and quickly waddled away. It was so embarassing, but I couldn't stop it. Please tell me that will eventually go away.

    Bandster Blues

i reckon that purees will be a part of my diet as well for some time.. until i really get a handle on how to go about it all. im a bit nervous about solids myself. Actually... ive got another three weeks before im filled... so its not going to be easy for me, the weather is getting colder and i need more hot food. dear oh dear. lolit will be 7 weeks from the op when i have my first fill. Is this the normal time frame between op and first fill??

    Bandster Blues

This is what i believe is referred to as bandster hell!.. its the time after surgery before your first fill. It is hell, but one that will assure your band is healed and healthy and ready to start you on your journey. I am 7 months out. I had my first fill 8 weeks after surgery, and then have gone every 6 weeks for a fill. Once you get over this hurdle it will be much better. You will actually be able to enjoy food once again. I love not being able to finish whats on my (already downsized) plate. If i want something, i eat it. maybe not the whole thing, but 1/4 or 1/2 and im done. Hang in there, it gets better! good luck!
  12. I am eight days post-op. As of yesterday when I had my 1 week visit with my Dr, I was doing very well with pain, Water intake, full liquids and walking. Yesterday afternoon I started feeling very tired to the point of turning off my phones and just laying in bed from about 6pm but not sleeping just tired, now this morning I was planning my first solo outing, but I still have that tired feeling. Should I be alarmed by this? Is it normal? Thank you for your input. Sent from my SM-G920T using the BariatricPal App

I am SURE I am overthinking this...

I had the same problem! I'm officially 1 month out today (Thursday!) and I'm trying to start drinking more plain water. I've had to add crystal light to everything because I have ALWAYS been a water-only drinker and so I have always gulped it. While the new tummy is healing, anything more than a sip will be painful. You will know if you're taking too big of sips! :drool5: It's good that you're trying it out now, I personally never thought about it before surgery, but I think it will get easier when you're post-op because if you gulp, it will hurt. Very good deterrent! LOL. There have been times where I forgot and took too big a drink, and I literally spit it out because I knew that if it got to my tummy, there would be pain! This probably sounds gross, so sorry about that! But now I'm to the point of taking a gulp, but keeping it in my mouth and taking tiny swallows if that makes sense. That way I don't have to bring the cup up to my mouth every two seconds. I sit in classes all day, so it looks weird. :thumbup1: And it does get better with the sipping. I can definitely take bigger drinks than I was three or four weeks ago. And I don't know about others but I think I saw Tiffykins post somewhere that she can take gulps now with no problems.:crying:

Every surgeon is different I had to do 3 days of clear liquids before surgery also protein is based on the person every one is different ... I was told pre op to shoot for 80-90mg I had to go on a diet prior .. Everyone is different so there needs are different ... Now that I'm post op the surgeon gave me 64/64 ... I'm 1 week post op and in up to 40-48 0z of fluids and about 60-70 of protein it's gradual u work ur way up

    A whole lot of Protein!

I had to do protein shakes a week before surgery but never clear liquid until after. I was told 60-80 protein but I am also tall (5'10") and have read in the past that the taller you are the more you need. I am struggling to get the protein in. Good luck
  20. I'm told my op will be October 25 but setting everything up then gets confirmed next week. I'm type 1 diabetic living in Perth WA if anyone wants to chat.

    Stomach Sleepers

I will also mention that at 3 weeks out I was completely on my stomach. It was sore but I had too! Revision was 8/31/15

    Stomach Sleepers

I am also a stomach sleeper! It's funny because between weeks 2-3 some nights were fine and then some still hurt. But now, 3 weeks out, it's totally fine. The one thing I would say though is to make sure it's been at least an hour or so since you've eaten. Otherwise it might hurt. Sweet dreams!
  23. Hey Beth! I think you've done great! I'm on my 3rd week of preop and boy has it been tough but I have 5 days until surgery and hopefully won't feel so deprived afterwards. Please keep us updated on how you are recovering. You will be in my thoughts!

    Emotions ? !

It's very, very hard. I'm 4 weeks post op and I got so frustrated at the tiniest things. And I just wanted to eat, but of course I couldn't. It's a little analogous to how it feels to get dumped by an ex. Alone, hopeless, feeling like it will feel this awful forever. But I just kept telling myself that the way I'm feeling is normal, it gets better, and eventually goes away all together I'm doing much better now, and I'm beginning to see changes in how I look, and the hard times seem like they happened years ago. Hang on. What you're feeling is normal and very temporary.
