    Gastric bypass - self pay

That is very wrong. When you are self pay... You get the cost of the surgery. and for self pay patients. You need to pay before you even can schedule the surgery. i was self pay. I got my quote. I did gastric sleeve. For Bypass it was around $24K. and as for the pre op testing. Almost every surgeon has them. I had to do them. EKG, Xray, Blood work, Psyc Eval ect... All those things i had to pay additionally but it wasnt that expensive. Xray was 50 bucks... EKG was 60, psyc eval was $600. now i do have health insurance but they dont cover the surgery but it did cover some of the pre op testing. Because my EKG came back with issues i had to see a cardiologist and get a nuclear stress test done. Which cost me around $500 out of pocket after my insurance. So after i had surgery. I saw my hospital billed my insurance for $45K which they denied. After i found out i called the hospital and it was a mistake. But you should not be getting any kind of bills after the surgery if you are self pay and paid before surgery. Get a itemized bill and make sure you are getting the SELF PAY Rate... Because my gastric sleeve surgery self pay rate (Which i am posting a picture) which is in the $18K range... With insurance it would have been over $45K... Most hospitals have discounted self pay rates.

    losses four pounds

If they are just going in to do some type of port revision surgery, it is nothing compared to the lapband surgery itself. My port flipped, so I had to have revision surgery. I was in and out in no time, and there is minimal pain afterwards. I didn't require any type of pain medication. Hope everything works out for you.

    Band to bypass surgery date!

Great to hear! I got my band out Feb 8, after having it for 6 years. My surgeon wants to wait 3 months to allow healing time before doing the bypass. My next meeting with him is May 5. Hoping to get surgery scheduled end of May!
  6. Congrats! I like the bypass so much better than the band. Cheers and looking forward to your success story. Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Lap Band or Gastric Bypass

Hello! As everyone has stated, the LAP-BAND or REALIZE band are much safer than gastric bypass. I have researched all of the surgeries for the past 15 months, and am going to have LAP-BAND (hopefully in September). I have an aunt and also new a school teacher who had gastric bypass and they both died because with gastric bypass, they don't get all of the nutrients. With the band, nothing is cut or rerouted, so your body will absorb all of the nutrients it needs. I have 3 good friends who have been banded within the past 15 months, and all have lost so much weight and say that they just wish they had done it sooner. Good luck! Peg

    Gasrtric Bypass after Gastric Banding???

Lee, Yes there are people who have moved on to gastric bypass surgery. Just a caution, weight loss is a journey and is not a quick fix. I also know lots of people who have had the bypass to only be back to where they were in the beginning. This process whether lap band, sleeve or bypass is about learning discipline, good habits and changing behavior. i realize that may not be a popular response on this site but it is true. We did not get fat over night and we are not going to get skinny over night. If you do decide to have the bypass surgery do it becasue it is the right thing for your health, not becasue you want to lose weight faster. Ok said my peace, I will shut up now. You can be successful, you can lose with the band, give yourself time before you rush into somehing else. Best of luck!
  9. I had the bypass surgery yesterday and experienced no issues other than the abdominal pain you experience which honestly feel more Ike hunger pains. My question is how much were others able to drink one day out of surgery? I’ll be lucky to get in 2 bottles of waters today! And am worried about hydration here!

    Revisions

After trying numerous times to fill my band the second time my dr decided it was twisted so I had to go in and have port revision surgery. It went pretty well except that they gave me some pain meds on an empty stomach so I threw up ALOT!! That sucked but after a few days of being extremely sore I was fine. Things are going much better now. I've lost another 10 pounds and am on my way! Thank goodness. The doctor said that the band was empty when he filled it during surgery. I have really noticed a difference in eating now! I can't eat very much at all now and I've learned what sliming is too...YUCK!! Oh well, I've started working out again and things are on the right track so I guess we'll see how it goes from now on...to be continued!
  11. I love my sleeve. I know several people that had the bypass and had lots of problems including having surgery again due to complications. I had my surgery July 26th and have lost 50 lbs, which is the same amount of weight my bypass friends had at this point after their surgery.
  12. My surgeon said the same thing about the bypass curing diabetes. But since I didn't have it he didn't push me to get a bp, but he said he does recommend it for those who do. Something about the mechanics of rerouting your guts - not just the weight loss, causes the remission. I admit I didn't pay close attention since my mind was made up about the sleeve and I'm not diabetic. I chose the sleeve because I just didn't want to put myself at risk for deficiencies. I'm not the world's best vitamin-taker and you have to take so many with the gb. I'm barely able to keep up with what I take now. But you should probably keep gathering information and talking to more doctors. Good luck whatever your final decision is!

    Vitamins

Has any one who’s had the bypass, switched to gummy vitamins & had no issues with their bloodwork? My surgeon said I had to stick to chewables or pill form vitamins.. I dont do well with pills as they make me gag & these chewables taste so gross😭
  14. My BMI was 32.44 when I had mine, I'm 14 months out and no problems, weight loss has slowed down immensely. My bypass is just over 9'.
  15. I was banded in 09 but am having problems with it so I'm looking at the sleeve revision. I was losing before my initial appt but now my BMI is too low. So I have to weigh more at my next appt before insurance submittal. I plan to lift weights and build muscle before surgery and eat good things but as much as I want to try and maintain where I am at. That is of course unless the Dr. says losing after approval is OK.

    The easy way?

Coastalchick, I don't know about you, but I do spend hours at the gym and exercising at home (as I did pre-op). I have also modified my behavior as I think all of us have had to do post-op. My eating habits were excellent, my doctors were pleased. Yet, I was morbidly obese. I tried it the "hard" way. If it works for them, great. It didn't work for me, no matter how much I tried. I had a gastric bypass. I'm still waiting for the easy part. I don't think that having to make sure I get enough protein in everyday is the easy way. Not when I have to have 60 grams and I can only hold 2 ounces three times a day

    Anyone from Boston MA?

As long as you follow the guidelines you cannot fail. I am 4 weeks out as of yesterday. I am down 12 lbs since surgery. Compared to others, I'm a slower loser, but who cares! It's 12 lbs that would still be on me had I not had the surgery. As far as this vs bypass, that is something you need to chat with your doctor about. From the group's I've gone to, it seems they are leaning more towards the sleeve these days - less risk, quicker recovery, you don't have the malabsorption issues as with the bypass, etc. It's scary, but I still think for me it was a good decision. Good luck!!

    playing the waiting game

Hi all! This site was mentioned at my Lap band support meeting...great info! Well, I am currently waiting for final insurance approval! ( Completed the nutrition consult and psych eval ). I am beyond excited but nervous too. I have been fighting my weight all my life and have just had enough. I am finally able to say " I need some help" and the lap band will be that extra tool I need. I have been researching this for 2 years. ( I had looked at Gastric Bypass as 2 freidns had it but don't like the idea of "messing up the plumbing".) I am thankful to have found a site where I can find the support I need to help me thru this journey! I can't wait to be a LOSER!! lol Michelle

    Port repair next week

Hi there! I'm a 35 year old married female living in the Seattle area. I was banded in 2004 by Dr. Kuri and his great team in Mexico. Surgery went off without a hitch and in my first year I lost nearly 70 pounds. I got pregnant with my first child in 2006, gained all of my lost weight back... went back to fills and fighting to get the weight off again, but never found that sweet spot again. I was contemplating a revision to RNY and three days before I was to go in for that surgery my insurance pulled the rug out and said "Ooops! Our bad - we can not cover the revision because you are no longer fat enough".. in so many words. Another year went by, my weight was up and down... in the gym starving myself with a trainer I can get it off, but in "real life" not so much. During this time I really struggled with feelings of failure, and all things associated with my band not working - the "my fault" stuff. I got pregnant with my second (and final) baby summer 2009, and following my hospital stay, I had a bad reaction to a medicine that caused major inflammation in my esophagus and viola! My local fill/follow up doctor found that there was a break in my tubing near my port!! So now it all made sense.. no wonder my band was not working!?! So now I am scheduled for a repair surgery on Monday 1/3/11, and basically starting over in every way. Back to my original weight ((sadly)), and aiming for 100lbs. Thanks, and keep well!
  20. 8 lbs! Wow. 3 previous cruises I didn't gain a lb. This is the first one with no fill in my band (slipped last month, waiting till late June for a sleeve revision). I ate with no abandon. eggs Benedict and corn beef hash for Breakfast, the buffet for lunch, a lavish dinner - and has anyone had Carnival Cruise Lines warm chocolate melting cake? It's to die for. I ate it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Then at about 11 pm, I'd order another dessert from room service- just because I could. Didn't go to the gym even once. Walked alot in ports, but obviously not enough. So it's official. I've now gained 30 lbs since getting married Dec 2011. It just crept up on me. About 1/2 of my closet doesn't fit anymore. I was down to an 8 and now I'm wearing about an 11/12. Hubby keeps telling me I should cut my carbs (he's a carb-a-phobe), but I feel like "hey, I'm having the sleeve done next month. Why not eat whatever I want?" I'm going to the dr on Monday to get my surgery date. I'm so embarrassed at my weight gain. And to top it off, we lost our camera on the last day of our cruise. All 500 pics of our week is gone. All those memories. No one turned it to lost and found. At least we have the memories to keep in our heads. What would you do if you were having the sleeve done next month? Try to lose weight or say to heack with it? I know what I'm going to hear "If you're not ready to change your diet then you're not ready for the sleeve". I AM ready. My band failed after 3 1/2 yrs (totally my fault, frequent vomiting) and I NEED something to help me take off the rest and maintain forever. It's why I got the band in the first place. I hate dieting. Marci
  21. hey everyone? how r u doing? i need some advice. since the end of march, 2008, i been going down hill with my success from my lap band surgery. i weighed 165lbs in march and ever since then i been like gaining 1-2 lbs hear and there. i cheat almot every single Day!!! i am being all stupid by cheating but i went through and still going through a bad time cuz in the end of march, my sister in law (My bro's wife) passed away and we still don't know what happened to her yet. she had gotten gastric bypass surgery in nov. 2007 and we had the same doctor and i just saw her a day before she passed away. and we were dieting together and ever since she passed away i haven't really paid too much attention to my diet. i need to get back on track with it. i didn't do all this hard work for nothing. Banding questions

The band can stay in for lie, but there is always the option of removing it, which was a comfrot to me when I was first considering it...as opposed to gastric bypass, which disrupts your body's normal functions, and would be very difficult to reverse. Now, after almost 4 months, I think I"d be nuts to have it removed. I call it my "brake." Good luck at the dr.'s!

    Jealous

Hi Solla: Be patient, and remember 1-2 pounds is what to expect with banding. Sure some people will lose more than this and some will lose less, but this is truly the average and it is a good healthy weight loss. We all need to remember that we did not get this heavy over night. And the weight will not come off like that either. I was told prior to my surgery by my surgeon that if I wanted immediate results that bypass would give that to me where Lap Band would be a slow but steady process. Your skin has time to recover with slow and steady. Therefore allowing it to not be so saggy. Just stick to the program and eating only healthy choices and excersie regularly and you will be a huge success I am certain of it. For me it is the long term that is my goal and I set mini goals for myself. Like hitting the next 10 marker. I am 4 pouns away from my second goal after surgery the 30# marker. Then it is not so overwhelming. When I look at it that way it makes the final goal more real for me. Remember you are retraining years and years of overeating and of making the wrong food choices and this takes time not only to achieve but also for our bodies to catch up. We are retraining our metabolisms as well. Your body will get the message and know it is not starving. I would recommend using something like FITDAY.com to log all of what goes into your mouth each and everyday. This will help you to eat between 1000 and 1200 calories a day which is what my nutritionist said the goal should be. I have trouble getting that much but I am losing very nicely I feel. Always eat your Protein first at every meal as well. YOU CAN DO THIS and YOU WILL succeed! Hugz,
  25. Hello fellow bandsters, I have been off the boards for a while, been so busy with work, but hope to be back as a regular now, I need you guys and have missed you all. Latest on me. I had my revision surgery on February 26th,2005 yeehaw!:banana and have lost a grand total of 138.5 pounds to date. I am scheduled for my first adjustment or "fill" on April 26th. I realize that is way later than normal for a first adjustment but my surgeon felt like we needed to wait a while and allow my stomach swelling to go completely down and for me to get healed up after the second band placement. I am so exctied to say the insurance did pay for the second band and Praise the Lord for that! (happy dance in progress):banana:banana:banana:banana:banana I have been kinda bummed out lately though cause I need my adjustment as I am back on regular food and I am able to eat way more than I should. Have to keep telling myself to eat the bandster way when you are SATISFIED, not necessarily FULL!!! I just have to make a conscious effort to watch it and that is why I have not lost any more. I also have got to get going on the exercise and Water intake again too. I feel like a failure as I have not been being very good lately in my snacking etc. I am sharing with you my goals now I need to lose 80 more pounds and here is what I plan to do to make it happen: 1. Be on this board daily as I need the support DAILY!!! 2. Drink at least 64 ounces of water per day. 3. Exercise 30 minutes (at least) every day. 4. STOP SNACKING BETWEEN MEALS!!! (those one or two bites of sugar free candy and sugar free icecream and sugarfree Cookies make a difference!!!) 5. Last and most importantly PRAY for guidance from above. Please pray with me as I start the second part of my journey. I need your support. You guys are great thanks so much for letting me vent.
