regaining and undoing their surgery
dal101 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Has anyone undone their surgery by regaining ? I am really scared of this happening . I am having a gastric bypass done at the end of Oct and I am self funding. I heard once u stretch your stomach by overeating, it wont shrink back. This would be the worst case scenario, undoing the hassle of surgery and wasting all that money. Thoughts? -

Anyone for September 2020?

I had revision from sleeve to bypass due to severe GERD (with minimal weight loss due to maladaptive eating developed as a result of the GERD) on 9/18. I am thrilled to say that I woke up from bypass with zero GERD symptoms and have continued to have zero symptoms since surgery! -

Gastric Sleeve Versus The Gastric Bypass Surgery
Manyloves replied to Numbheart's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am a sleeve patient now having a revision due to GERD/reflux and other issues. I wanted the bypass and my Dr talked me into the sleeve because of my age and its success was close to bypass, I was also sold on the less invasive aspect etc. Should have went with my gut to avoid a second surgery. -
Gastric Sleeve Versus The Gastric Bypass Surgery
catwoman7 replied to Numbheart's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
if you have GERD prior to surgery, they'll usually recommend bypass. Otherwise, it comes down to personal preference. I chose bypass (actually, my surgeon recommended it) because I was one of those who had GERD prior to surgery. But that aside, I felt more comfortable with bypass anyway because at the time I had surgery over five years ago, the sleeve was still kind of a new thing. I was a little afraid it might become "Lapband 2". However, it's been around long enough at this point that it's proven itself, so that wouldn't have been a concern to me at this point. But...the GERD still would have. VSG can make that worse. It doesn't happen to everyone - or even the majority - but it happens enough that I didn't want to risk it. I've been very happy with my RNY, by the way. -
Gastric Sleeve Versus The Gastric Bypass Surgery
Arabesque replied to Numbheart's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did lots or reading before surgery. I also chose the sleeve because it didn’t change my digestive pathway & I wouldn’t be challenged by malabsorption issues. Sleevers also seemed to be less likely to suffer from dumping & food intolerances. The average weight loss over 5 years is about the same for the two surgeries though bypass patients often lose more quickly at first. I had stress related reflux before but while I have odd days now when I have attacks (usually at night) it’s manageable with medication - I just take 20mg Nexium every day & not as needed as I did pre surgery. I didn’t have any side effects from my surgery so I can’t advise you on that. I just have the usual side effects of weight loss: feeling the cold, bony butt pain, cholesterol went up before settling back to normal, low blood pressure, etc. & better health. As with all things, we all have different experiences throughout this journey & level of your success is directly dependent upon the effort you put in. I’m so glad I had my sleeve surgery. Whichever surgery you decide to have I’m sure you’ll be equally as happy. Good luck. -
I had RNY Bypass Sept. 30th. I am feeling great! I was sent home on a liquid diet (strained cream soups, broths, yogurts, puddings, protein shakes, jellos) to last 2 weeks. I see my nutritionist on the 15th. I was told I would be comfortable eating 1/4 cup. Honestly, my liquid diet isn's cutting it. I am able to eat 1 cup of cream soup comfortably and still left feeling hungry. I am not feeling comfortably full, at all, and it is driving me crazy! I am getting all of my recommended proteins and fluids in. But, I am dying for something with more substance. I have heard of so many struggling to get fluids in and never feeling hungry, that I am feeling frustrated with my hunger 7 days post op. I'm getting approximately 600 calories in, daily and easily. I worry that 600 calories is to many? Ugh, what can I do? I put a message into my dietician, but received a return message that he is out until the 12th. I hope someone is covering for him. I'm dying and ready for purees!!!

Have you seen a gastroenterologist? I know bypass messes with the way our internal plumbing works so maybe talk to them. They might suggest a daily stool softener so you aren’t constipated. Constipation can also be a cause of loose stools and vomiting- think overly constipated and impactions can come with seepage. (I was chronically constipated as a kid).

Gastric Sleeve Versus The Gastric Bypass Surgery
ChubRub replied to Numbheart's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I went into my initial consult not really knowing much about either procedure. After the nurse gave her presentation, I knew that I wanted the RNY. I had mild GERD, and was concerned it would get worse with the sleeve. After I joined this board, I read a lot of stories about members having a revision from sleeve to RNY b/c of GERD which reinforced my choice. So far, so good!! I'm very happy with my surgery! -
I had the bypass on March 4th and have been having some post surgery issues. I have constipation for about three days followed by diarrhea and throwing up to the point that I actually pass out. I have had an endoscopy and a CT scan and nothing. I also had an appointment with an ENT and nothing. Cardiologist says nothing going on with my heart and my sugar level is not dropping. Reaching out in this forum in the hopes that someone else has experienced this and can offer help.

Gastric Sleeve Versus The Gastric Bypass Surgery
The Greater Fool replied to Numbheart's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sleeve is restrictive, but everything is intact. So, you can eat pretty much all foods, meds work as they do normally. Bypass bypasses the pyloric valve and a small amount of intestines, creating malabsorption. Thus, anything you eat goes directly into your intestines. Sugar or Fat may cause 'dumping' syndrome which is unpleasant. Time release meds MAY need adjusting. I wanted dumping because I wanted to be forced into changing my habits. It worked. I've managed to stay more or less on plan to this day. Sugar & fat make appearances, but in vastly reduced quantity. Some folks think restriction is enough and more power to them. I chose RNY because I found myself thinking I could return to old eating habits if I chose with other surgeries. I didn't trust that I could not stay on plan without some 'adjustments' the RNY would provide. Good luck. Tek -
Gastric Sleeve Versus The Gastric Bypass Surgery
Lilfootie replied to Numbheart's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I originally went in wanting a sleeve, but my surgeon convinced me that bypass is a better option for me. I have asthma that has put me in the hospital a few times and the chance of reflux increasing and asthma worsening was not worth it for me. He said he could do the sleeve but there would be a chance I would need a revision, and I did not want two surgeries. I think sleeves are supposed to be safer, but revisions are pretty common. -

I personally went for the bypass option. It was one extra day in the hospital and the malabsorption helps with keeping the weight off. -
Gastric Sleeve Versus The Gastric Bypass Surgery
mattk53 replied to Numbheart's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
When I was looking at both, the sleeve just sounded like a better option. It was a shorter surgery, it was less invasive then the full bypass (It didn't "reroute" everything), It was just taking a large section of the stomach off. Plus the success rate was very close. (slight edge to the bypass) It just made sense for me. -

What are the advantages of the gastric sleeve versus the gastric bypass surgery? How common is it for patients to have complications? What side effects are most common? -
My stats are very similar to yours. I am also 5'1" and started at 250 pounds. I had the sleeve rather than the bypass. My weight loss started slowly compared to others I know who had WLS. I lost about 10 pounds the first month, then 15 the second month and then I settled into about 10 pounds per month until recently (it has slowed down now). At this point I am 18 months out from surgery and I have lost 110 pounds overall. 18 pounds in 21 days is pretty amazing and 3 or 4 pounds in one week is great! I think you're doing fine.

RnY 10 years ago... back to where I started...
Tina Leonard posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey there! New to the forum, not new to the WLS world. Having an EGD tomorrow to check the status of my anasthemosis and to see if a revision is in order. (Truth: I am HOPING for a revision.) I am currently doing <1200 cals; +65 protein; <25 sugar; standard vitamins and calcium citrate. Anyone have a RnY revision ? Any EGD advice? I had one previously but it was during another (bigger) procedure so I don't know what the after was like. Thanks a million! Looking forward to getting to know you all. Tina -
Need to hear from VSG to DS revisioners

Good luck today! Wishing you a great surgery and an amazing post-op! The reflux seems to be a thing when I don’t sleep slightly inclined. The dr said it would subside over time but told me to get Pepcid complete chewable... LIFESAVER. I take one if it happens and it knocks it out immediately but it hasn’t been much of a thing the last few days. No bathroom issues yet... first poop (sorry lol) was last night and it was fine. Not real gassy or anything like that. But I haven’t eaten anything solid yet so only time will tell lol. I can already tell weight loss is slower this go round, because I kept a good chart with the VSG. By now I had lost 11 lbs and now I’m at 6, excluding the 11lbs all the hospital IV fluids put on me. Realistically, revision alone I expect maybe 75-100. With my trainer I hope to lose 150. I’m much more motivated to exercise now because I’m not doing this again. Whew, no way! I’ve already started back walking up to 20 mins approved by my doctor. Please give us an update when you can! -

You had a revision and they typically lose slower. You are doing really well losing 20 lbs in less then a month !!! Congrats and keep up the good work. -
I had gastric bypass in 9/15. I am 5’1 and day of surgery I weighed 250. I have Hashimotos. I’m just looking to see ppl with similar stats and their weight loss. Please, I know everyone is different, looses differently etc. I just would like to see how other ppl are getting along. So far, I’ve lost about 18 pounds post op and that seems to be so little to me. I lost about 3 or 4 pounds this week (third week weigh in) and that seems so minor. Again, I know everyone is different, I’d just like some similar ppl sharing journies so I can relate! Thank uou!

Aussie Aussie Aussie, Gold Coast sleevers
Mikeyba replied to lilyrose's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Folks, new to the forum, but have been on the journey for many years. I live on the Gold Coast, Qld Australia J and am considering the Sleeve. I was one of the first is Aust to have a Band back in 2000 so over 20 years ago !! Was placed by Dr Les Nathenson out of the Wesley in Brisbane, whilst I had great success with the band (just over 50Kg) I had to have the band removed after 12-14 months as a result of a Staf Infection, from the day of surgery I struggled with wound issues not healing properly and pain as a result of the infection. Underwent an ‘explority’ look and see surgery to wake and find that Les had removed the band altogether as there was a serious infection. Hmmm I wasn’t happy but.. I was down to 90Kg so needed some time for body to recover from the infections etc and life went on.. 20 years later I am now 52 and back up to 155kg.. Really considering the sleeve as I don’t have any reflux or other issues at this stage, also lot less risky than a bypass. I am looking for recommendations and experiences people have had with any local Gold Coast surgeons, my research has led me to Dr Jacobus Jordaan and Victor Liew, both seem to be at the opposite of each other when it comes after surgery support, but both seem very experienced and a big price difference. I am not wedded to either surgeon so keen to hear about others experiences with these or any other Gold Coast based surgeons. As well as your own journeys J my email is mikeyba@hotmail.com -

Hello everyone, I and my revision on sept 10th from. Sleeve to duo switch . I started at 330 when I called my doctor by my first visit i was at 320 by my surgery date I was 312 by my first appointment after surgery I was 304. I am now 300 and the scale has not moved for me. I drink 64 oz of water a day. I eat my protein baked and take my multi vitamins. I work out 5 days a week. 3 days biking 2 days walking. I am frustrated with my results. I am stressed and worried that this surgery is not going to work for me. I have an appointment on the 16th and I know my doctor will be very upset. Has anyone else been through this? Yay @gottabeblair so happy. Sounds like you had a super smooth procedure. Sorry about the reflux but hopefully will subside! Curious if you are having any bathroom issues with it? How much do you want to lose with his revision? I did a one week preop, pretty easy. I think I lost about 5. Surgery early tomorrow morning. Hopefully with a nice easy recovery!
