So... what does Dumping Syndrome actually FEEL like?
Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 replied to erik_da_viking's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Nope, this isn’t dumping. ‘Liquid fecal urgency’ (or, as we call in in New Zealand, a fart with follow-through 😁 is really common until our tummies work out their new rhythm. A few people have it forever, but overwhelmingly it settles in the first few days, of as eating returns to solids. I am 7 months post op bypass - I get this occasionally (I just don’t let out a quiet gentle fart any more - too risky!) still. Dunping - hot sweats, nausea but for me no vomiting, yawning, liquid fecal urgency, fatigue - feels like nasty food poisoning and suddenly 30-40 minutes later it stops. It has successfully put me off eating sweet stuff! -
Is there a possibility of adding a Forum for revisions like VSG to MGB, since there are so many people getting revisions done??

Not true...malabsorption doesn't just occur in bypass. I only say this out of personal experience. At a little over a year out, I started having really odd symptoms that mimicked a stroke. It took many months of testing before my bariatric internist did "micronutrient"testing on my blood. I was deficient in many key vitamins-D, B12, Iron, Magnesium to name a few. I started intensive Vitamin therapy in February and didn't start to fell better until April. According to her, because we have less surface in our gut to absorb the nutrition from food, it's not unheard of to have issues. I know this isn't a response to the gummy vitamin question, but I think it's important that ALL bandsters understand the importance of getting sufficient vitamins in whatever form they can...

She didn't weigh that much to begin with, if I'm right - so maybe it's because she had a lower BMI that the loss has been slower? Also, maybe her sleeve size was larger - my doctor did my mom's larger when she had the revision because she didn't have that much to lose.

DS in Mexico, is Tijuana Bariatrics legitimate?
SaraBelle39 posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I just started the process of looking to get DS Surgery in Mexico. I know there are a lot of different organizations that can coordinate this process for you, the one I filled out the Health form for is Tijuana Bariatrics, using Dr. Fernando Garcia at Hospital CER. I got a response that I have been cleared for surgery. I am an RNY Gastric Bypass member (10 years out) and want to do a revision to the DS (I gained all the weight back in the last 3-4 years). When I first submitted my form, their response was they wanted to "revise" my gastric bypass because they don't recommend the DS because of gas issues? Has anyone else heard of this? I want the surgery, but only if I can get the DS. Also, my coordinator Karen seems very quick and anxious to get my deposit (this is self pay because the insurance I have through my work doesnt cover bariatric surgery at all). I am worried about getting scammed?! This all seems too easy. Hoping that someone here can lend some advice? Also, wondering if anyone has used any of the financing options listed on their website? Citerra Finance, Medicard, Medical Financing Solutions.. I guess I got a lot of questions..ha ha Sara -
So, my 4 weeks is officially today. I've lost 26lbs. I should be thrilled, right? Nope. I have this total mental derp happening that makes me feel like I will somehow be the only person in gastric bypass history to ONLY lose 26lbs and that's it. I'm done. No more weight loss. lol! I think because I've had so many failures in the past, I just anticipate this being another one of them... even though I am following everything the best I can (in light of my ulcer, I am low on protein - working on it!) I also have a mental derp against protein shakes. Aside from my whey allergy and getting super nauseous... back in 2009 I had liposuction when I was a mere 140lbs. After surgery I drank TONSSSS of muscle-building/weight-gaining protein shakes because the plastic surgeon said I needed them for muscle recovery. Welp, I gained 40lbs doing that! I had no guidance and was an idiot, basically. But that's where the weight gain started - so I have a creeper lurking in my brain that protein shakes = weight gain = super morbid obesity. I am trying to get over it; I have a sweet home gym and was just told yesterday I am not allowed to exercise because my protein is currently too low. So, that has motivated me more and I started a soy shake last night. Gunna keep it up. I feel like I have conquered so many of my cravings-issues, though. I read just a few chapters in Never Binge Again and it is so helpful. I highly recommend that book. I feel very in control, and did have one mishap the other day when I got very stressed (I overate, but not a "banned food")... we're all human, though. Why are our brains so self-defeating?! I know I am championing through this in light of the complication and there is NO reason I will fail... unless I set myself up for it. So, nipping it in the bud now, for sure. But it sure is hard to overcome some of those mental blocks. If it wasn't, I'm sure most of us wouldn't be here. Just my random blurb o' the day.

Just had my revision yesterday and got the same vibe and comments from my sister..."hope this one works for you - gosh you've had a lot of problems with your band...this is my diet (shows me smoothie)". To that I had to say...gosh I take a sip or two of coffee or my water and I am so full...sure hope this lasts. Needless to say she has a significant weight problem as well but has never been supportive of my struggles or successes with the band over the years. What it comes down to is some people are not empathetic...and most people, especially those with weight issues are probably jealous that you have a tool to help you. Glad to hear your doing great!

DS in Mexico, is Tijuana Bariatrics legitimate?

Check with Dr. Esquerra in Mexicali. I'm unsure if he does revisions but I know many who had his/her DS with him. I've also sent you a PM. -
Weird Comment by fellow Bandster
hopetolose posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So when i was in for my first fill last week, I had a lady that had the procedure done the same day say a comment to me that I wasnt sure how to take. My surgeon does the post op class for "how to understand fill process" on the 6 week mark and all the people that had the procedure done that day comes in to the class and then goes and has thier fill done right afterwards. There were 4 of us that was banded on 4/14. So I have met these people twice in the last month and 1/2. Both at classes. This one lady is kinda big and walks with a cane. But I could tell that she has done well and she seems to be moving around better than she did the last time I saw her. Well we got to talking a little bit before the class and then again right after our fills were done as we sat next to each other while we were sipping on our waters. We talked about how the fills went and all that. Then she said "not to be mean, but why did you have the procedure done, you dont even look overweight" I wasnt quite sure how to respond. I just said that I definately needed it done and that I was happy that I had done it. My bmi was 37, which makes me severely obese. I would say this lady is probably under morbid obese. I kinda switched the subject after that to something else. Im just wondering if this is the norm on how people feel about someone that is not over 40 bmi having the procedure done. I hope I am not opening up a big can of worms asking this question. Either way, would not bother me because I am so glad that I did it. When she said it, I almost wanted to say "well why didnt you get the bypass done" But I didnt think that would be nice at all to say and I am not a person that would hurt someone just to hurt them. It is up to her what procedure she wanted to have done, just like it was up to me on having this procedure done. That was just a quick thing that went through my mind when I was trying to decide if I was offended or not by her comment. Anyway, was just thinking about it and was curious if anyone has had a comment like this before. -
I had bypass surgery in June 2010... until March 2015 everything was well and I kept what I had lost. Lap Band & port removed 4 days ago with post op picture
Buh Bye replied to Dream4tc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi there! I had my stupid band removed on 08/11 and revised to RNY so today is post op day 10! I was also nervous about the RNY and had considered the sleeve but I wanted one surgery and that was it. The sleeve has been great for some people but for me...I was only doing this one more time. I should have done the RNY in the first place! Anyway....I don't regret it! Good luck to you! No matter what, you're going to feel better with that thing out!???? -
Lap Band & port removed 4 days ago with post op picture
Dream4tc replied to Dream4tc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Great to hear! I initially was seeking revision to sleeve, but with my history of GERD problems and with the scarring from my band, my new surgeon told me that I would most likely would have the same problems with the sleeve. He also said the surgery with the bypass would be easier versus the sleeve. Looking forward to bypass and I have a great support system. Looks like you have done well with your bypass, Congrats!!! What are your challenges or struggles? -
Lap Band & port removed 4 days ago with post op picture
Dream4tc posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I had lap band November 2011. This worked well for a while. I lost about 80 pounds, until I had complication Nov 2014. I had problems with vomiting everything I would eat, so my previous surgeon ordered an upper GI and esophageal manometry. Both of those tests confirmed I had a prolapse. Long story short, my insurance company made me switch to a different surgeon. I had my band and port removed 8/10/15. My new surgeon said that my band had also slipped and was sitting sideways which was causing me to have the vomiting. He also did an intra-op EGD to look at my esophagus to see if there was any damage from 9 months of vomiting. He said it didn't look too bad,but I needed to continue my Zantac and Prilosec. He said he had to remove the adhesions(scar tissue) from the band. I am not going to lie, the port removal and scar tissue removal is painful! It was supposed to be an outpatient procedure and go home same day, but I ended up staying the night in the hospital due to pain control and I am really glad I did. IV Dilaudid was the only thing that was helping my pain. They eventually switched me to percocets and that seemed to help with the pain. I am attaching a picture of the port site. I am now 4 days post-op band and port removal and I am still taking percocets for pain, but it is improving. I will be revising to Gastric bypass in late October, early November based on my surgeon's recommendations and my history of GERD. My insurance company wouldn't allow me to have the revision done in 1 surgery, so it has to be done this way. I am interested in hearing from those who have had band to bypass and what their experiences were. There were 3 total incisions. 2 small ones which don't bother me at all, and one large painful incision where port was. This larger incision is the mean monster.- 23 replies

Anyone else having a hard time getting pain meds?
Gumpgal replied to Gumpgal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm glad they will have the medication in for you tomorrow. I had a revision from lap band to gastric bypass. My initial pain while in the hospital was more than with the lap band but nothing that wasn't managed by the pain meds. I was able to walk around sooner after the bypass that with the lap band. Walking as much as tolerated also helped with decreasing gas pains. I didn't wait until the pain became intolerable before taking the medicine and I took Tylenol sometimes so I didn't have to take the controlled pain med. It's normal to feel a bit anxious because it's surgery but RNY is so worth it. I'm 9 months out and down about 105 pounds and 20 pounds from my goal. I'm just telling you that because the surgery works. You will be fine, don't over think it! ???? Thanks @@Trayjay33! Surgery is next Tuesday. I am trying to focus on the end game. Taking one anxious moment at a time and trying to work through it ???? -
"10 days notice before bypass"-questions
FloweryNYC posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I 'checked in' w/my doc office today to see if they'd heard from my insurance company, they said they'd been trying to call me b/c they want to schedule my survey for July 3! (It's June 22! Not sure if my vm was full or what?!) I mentioned I have a fatty liver and asked, don't I need the 2 week diet (their 2 week diet), they said a week should be fine. So....tell me what to do and buy and for how long I should have a sitter watch my kids afterward and are there any decent sized vitamins out there that I can actually swallow, and any other advice? I was picturing being told my date was 3-4 weeks away, I'd eat a few of my favorite meals, have my last margarita and diet coke, but I guess I am on shakes starting asap! Thanks in advice for any info and advice! -
What's everyone eating for thanksgiving?

That's awesome for you Ann! Glad for you. This is the recipe/food part of the forum so just a friendly conversation about this upcoming holiday foods. Honestly if you didn't know how to answer the question you could of just bypassed this question. -
I had RNY gastric bypass almost 4 years ago. The surgeon's office directions on vitamins were: * Three Flintstone's complete chewable multivitamins daily * 65 milligrams elemental iron daily for menstruating women * 1500 to 1800 calcium citrate daily. [be careful on this one because cited dosages on the bottles are generally by two tablets not on a single table] * 500 to 1000 micrograms sublingual B12 daily or 1000 mcg IM injection once monthly. * 100 mg Thiamine (vitamin B1) daily for one year following surgery and then weekly thereafter. Vitamin chemistry is important for absorption. Calcium supplements should be calcium citrate. There are also different chemistries of B12. I use the sublingual B12 and was told to use methylcobalamin. You cannot use a time-release version of B12. If you are taking iron supplements, it must be ferrous sulfate for the best absorption. Gummy vitamins are not absorbed properly and should be avoided. It is important to put a 2 hour separation between the vitamins that contain iron and those that contain calcium. So in my case I found that what works best for me is to take the iron supplements just before bedtime. I put my vitamins in a weekly pill container. I have one container for the morning and one for the night. And I use a very small glass bowel for my calcium supplements. I put my calciums in the bowl in the morning and take them throughout the day. If I am up and about I put my calciums in a ziplock bag and carry them with me.

Is there anyone here that has gone from band to bypass
married posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Wanting to talk to anyone that has gone from band to bypass but is still on this site. I think lessons learned from the band will help with the bypass surgery. Would love to talk to anyone who has had this experience. Thanks! (Band slipped and doctor felt bypass was the way to go) -

Question for those with the Realize band.
penturn replied to bling's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Gosh, I'm soooooo discouraged. I think I got a placebo!!I was banded July 15 and very quickly lost 20 pounds. For the past month, however, I haven't lost any. (Actually I've lost the same three pounds three times. Shouldn't that count as nine?) I have no restriction at all. I got my first fill this week and can't have another for a whole month. There is no telling how much I could actually eat. I try not to overdo it, but I want to feel full. I walk almost daily. Everywhere I go, people ask me how it is going. I hate telling people that it isn't working yet. I know people who had restriction from day one. I told so many people that I was having the surgery because I wanted to be accountable. Now I wish I had never even told anyone. At this point, I almost wish I had done bypass. Sorry to whine, but I needed to vent. -
How do you deal with no drinks during eating?
RestlessMonkey replied to a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Actually as a native Texan and one who grew up on the border I can tell you the cure to hot salsa is salt! No kidding. Of course, not so good if you retain Water and are supposed to watch your salt, but it works. My surgeon used to say no drinking during or 1 hour after but has since revised that to 15 minutes before, all during, and 15 minutes after. Meals are to take no longer than 30 minutes. I've tried eating without drinking and it isn't really bad. I agree with the poster who said you taste your food more! -
Denied because of only 1 WLS per lifetime.....
Ms.AntiBand replied to Teachingmom's topic in Insurance & Financing
Seems like there was someone here who had the same worry. She was told that if she could not have the revision at the time of the band removal she was out of luck because only one per lifetime. Not sure how that turned out. If your policy states only one they will fight you so they don't have to pay.. It I wouldn't give in. Sometimes you can beat them at their own game.. But if it's written in the policy, they have grounds to deny it -
Good Morning Group, My name is DeeDee and I am on my 2 1/2 - 3 week post-op Gastric Bypass journey. During my journey so far I have endure many different feelings and I wanted to know if anyone out there has been through the same or similar? Some days I feel I have made the right decision for my health and life, on other days I feel like I made a mistake. I think I feel like this because of the struggles each day to abide by the restrictions that it takes to maintain my health goals. I just have a fear that I may not being doing enough since being home. I see my surgeon and nutritionist in two days for my follow-up. Some days I am happy and others I cry when it seems difficult to even think about other responsibilities and tasks. Is this normal?

Hello Again, Long Time No See...

Can I ask if you revised from sleeve to bypass because of acid reflux? If so, did it resolve? -
"Our digestive system was design to work a certain way. That is why there are so many problems with the bypass." This is exactly what my doctor explained when I asked her for a gastric bypass. She said the bottom portion of your stomach has integral disgestive properties that are eliminated with the bypass, leaving you with a lifetime of digestive problems. I never feel "crappy" with my band (other than all the troubles with my port) but I do have an enormous amount of gas and discomFART. Other than that, I have a little pressure inbetween my rib cage. For those of you who know about all my complications, all I can say is THANK GOD I chose the Band. At least when things go completely wrong I can have it removed. I can't imagine all the complications I would have had with the bypass. I'd be the one that ended up on the fatality list.
