  1. Has anybody tried these? $3 each but worth it for the liquids phase post op?

    Insurance hoops.....

I found everything necessary for the pre-op portion, I took nutrition classes, psych eval, and the pre-op class. I can't tell you how many times I've referred to the paperwork given to my in my pre-op class because most of the time, the questions I had were right in front of me. No one can fully prepare you for the life change you are about to embark on, but having as much information as possible a head of time is priceless. I had all my paperwork saved in a 3-ring binder with notes, stickies and what not reminding me of things that could come up. My post-op appointments have been great as well, I walk in with a list of questions and if they don't address something on my list I go right through them with me. The more well versed you are the better prepared you are, but until the surgery happens, you still have no idea what you're in for. I am so thankful for the prep I received prior to surgery and the research I did on my own. I think my mindset and knowledge helped me stay focused and not go through some of the emotional roller coasters that others faced post surgery.

Only 2 weeks? Lucky you... I has 2 was preop liquid and 3 wks post op liquid. Sugar free Popsicles saved me from going crazy... And i also enjoyed protein shakes, fresh fruit smoothis, sugar free pudding, applesauce, v8 juice, soup and lots of water
  4. Hi Jill, thanks for starting such a great thread here. I started my process in June and started to see a therapist in July specifically to talk about my relationship with food. It's not like I haven't been working on all of this for, say, twenty-two years or so, but I knew I needed to tap all resources possible for this big new change in my life. I've been able to determine some areas that are red flags for me. I was eating to tamp down anxiety and stress but also out of habit. If I had a conference call coming up or a meeting with clients I would eat as a way to prep myself and as a kind of reward for something I didn't really want to do. Also all the years of deprivation and being on or off of one diet or another screwed my head up and I worried that being banded might not work. But it will -- I'm getting it next week and I can't wait. With my appetite dimmed I will be able to really assess what is going on when I have an impulse to eat. It might be the healthy kind, good old hunger which of course is elusive now pre-band but I understand post band it's very clear. I feel so willing to do whatever it takes. I still want to be able to have whatever it is I want because I am a healthy eater now and love food that's good for me, but I'll just be having much, much less and at appropriate intervals. I think it's going to be hard sometimes but not hard like it's been for me for so long feeling so screwed up about a basic thing like eating. And I'm a cook. I'm into food, production cooking and I still will be doing all that. Just not sitting down to a big plate and then grazing before and after. Best wishes to you as you go through the process. We are all here together for a reason.

4ounces by weight or volume ?

Buy a scale. I found out 4 oz of chicken is a lot more meat than 4 oz of steak as the meats and foods can be denser. If I would have guessed I would have been wrong so the scale is really working for me. It also teaches me what 4 oz looks like. Good luck! I'm 3 months out and halfway to my goal. During the "honeymoon" period I have been very strict and cautious as this is the time to lose.
  6. Which one do you do ? Which one is right? Puree phase I did 4 ounce to fit in a 4 ounce container. Now I'm 6 week out. 4 ounces of Solis food won't fit in a 4 once container. ( it might if I cut it up) I want to do this right... I bought so many 4 ounce containers now I'm thinking of just buying small container's for meal prep.
  7. I am now 3 days smoke free by quiting cold turkey and 5 days soda free lost 5 pounds already
  8. I'M one week out from surgery and now on just liquids. I'm drinking the Bariatric Advantage and I like it and am satisfied. However I just woke up from a nap and made a bowl of 1/2 cup of lf cottage cheese and salsa on top. Wasn't hungry just wanted the flavor. Hope I haven't screwed things up.
  9. Found out today that surgery will have to be in January and not December , I know its only a few weeks difference but still.

    Pre-Op Weightloss

I am having the same issues. I am doing Weight Watchers and hate that each week they ask me what I'm doing wrong. Not comfortable telling them I'm eating the same as always so I don't loose too much. But I really would like to lose some since it's summer. I just don't want to get below the BMI threshold for surgery approval. Very frustrating. I'll be keeping an eye out to see what anyone else has experienced.

Weight loss on 6 mo diet

You might be surprised by how quick it actually goes. I had a 6 month requirement and really used the time to change my eating habits and start practicing for post op (not drinking 30 min before/after meals, small bites, thorough chewing, etc.) and between that and all the other appointments like the sleep study, egd, psych appt, and all the other stuff, it came pretty quick. I lost 27 during the 6 months, then another 23 during the 4 week preop diet. I weighed exactly 50 pounds less than my highest weight on my day of surgery. At first I was disappointed to hear that I'd have to wait so long for surgery, but once I got into those nutrition appointments I was so glad I had the time to prepare and get ready for post-op living.

  13. Hi! I was just given my surg. date in 4 weeks. As part of the pre-op I had to have an endoscopy. I did not have any symptoms, this was done as part of the prelims for surg. I just received a call from my doc and was told that I have Barrett's esophogus and that I should not have the sleeve but opt for the bypass instead. Has anyone heard of this or dealt with a similar problem. I am reading alot about those of you that have the haital hernia, but haven't seen anything about Barrett's. Thanks for helping out!

Extreme Gas Pain 5 Days Post-op

Hello, Im sorry you're having gas pain. I'm pre op RNY, but had 5 abdominal surgeries and they used CO2 in all of them. My pain was worst with my gallbladder surgery. The gas x is for gas from in the stomach and intestines and the gas pain you are having is intrabdominal. Your body has to absorb the CO2 and it can take some time to do that. I had the gas pain for a week, but I kept on walking. Walking helps the most, but it takes time. If you are able to lay on your right side, that helps move the gas around so it goes away. Keep using the heating pad too. I am no doctor, but it worked for me. If it is to unbearable, call your surgeon. You want to be sure there's no infection or strictures. I do hope you feel better soon! Take care.😃
  17. I have tricare prime remote and the insurance requires (in order for approval) 1.Diagnosis 2.Height & weight 3. BMI 4.PCP letter 5. 5 year weight history 6. History of weight loss attempts 7. Thyroid panel 8. Comorbidities 9. Letter from surgeons office I am just beginning the process of getting all of my medical records together, if anyone else has heard of this as well...
  18. You know the first week is the hardest... It's not unusual to have a sore throat stomach pain and so on... Just be kind to yourself take your pain meds if needed. If your start to feel really bad (high fever increased pain) put a call into your doctor. Good luck
  19. I have been using this site for a lot of my research throughout my decision process, and now that I am moving towards my surgery date. This has been my journey so far: Around Thanksgiving of 2016, i had made my final decision to pursue bariatric surgery. I had the support of my family and friends, and I was ready to go. I had a recommendation for a surgeon, and so I made my consult appointment. I had my first consult on December 6, 2016, and I brought every piece of medical information with me to that appointment that could possibly prove that I had met the insurance qualifications for approval. I left that appointment fairly certain that I would have my surgery some time in January 2017. On December 14, 2016, I had an appointment with my PCP for medical clearance, and I also had my psych evaluation that same day. They were both kind enough to provide me copies of my records right after the appointment so that I could give them immediately to my surgeon's nurse. Once they received all of those documents, along with the proof of following a 6 month medically supervised weight loss program, they scheduled my surgery date for January 17, 2017. YAY!! I had my Endoscopy done on December 20, 2016, and was cleared or surgery. At this point, I am scheduled on January 4, 2017 for a pre-op class that will explain pre and post op eating plans, and any other surgery prep items. I then have my last appointment with my surgeon on January 5, 2017 before my surgery. This whole process has moved so fast, which I am so excited about. At each step of the process I have been worrying that one piece or another would disqualify me from the insurance approving the coverage. My surgeon's office has assured me that I meet all of the qualifications, and there is no reason the insurance should deny me. At this point, I am just counting down the days to January 17, 2017. I am so excited that I have already started cleaning out my closet! Thanks to everyone on this site for sharing your journeys, and allowing all of us newbies to learn from you! I look forward to becoming an active member of this group.
  20. It will be o.k. If I were you I would calmly speak to the person at your doctors office and state what you were told and the name of the person at medicare who told you the information. I would ask if she could submit the information since there is obviously not a submission date that will be sent to her. As stated above, we still have at least another month before school starts back. I went back to work the next week. I was back to work after 8 calendar days (which included weekends) and really I could have been back to work by day four. So it will be o.k.

    Diabetes Medication?

Go Kathy! I went an had blood work and my A1c was 6.0 the first time, then I got dehydrated and my A1c had increased to 6.3. WTH? I had been eating a few small candies (mini bars for about 1 Week). So now I try to avoid the sweets. Or maybe it had increased because I stressed my body out by being dehydrated. Not sure. Does anyone know if G2 Gatorade can raise our blood sugar? I need to research this.
  23. Oh the lapband, the first year was great. I was mostly compliant and lost 65 lbs. Then, in one weekend, I thought I was going to die. Turns out I had a slippage with 2 little pouches. So I went in for a revision. I tried my best to hold onto that band. I didn't want to gain the weight back. You know the deal, vomiting all the time, but worst than that, trapped gas. So after another year of all that, it had to come out. Now, 3 yrs later, I'm heavier than ever at 343. In this year I have been down to 313 and back up to this weight. I can drop and gain the same 7/lbs over and over. Water weight. So now I want to thoroughly investigate the sleeve. My concerns are #1: excessive Scar tissue as that was to blame for band removal, #2 do you get trapped gas with sleeve, heck I still have it, and #3: I have Dercum's Disease. Does anyone else have Dercum's and WLS? So can some of you help me make a decision? I'm not doing good on my own. I have severe osteoarthritis and this weight is dragging me down. I thought I had done my investigating with the band but no, I didn't do enough. Really, mostly concerned about Scar tissue... Please give me your thoughts.

    Surgery In 24Hrs

Girl!!!! I am right there with you!!!! My surgery is in the morning...Well....I am not sure the time yet...they will call me between 3 and 5 this afternoon! I am feeling allllllll those same feelings. BUT~~~I did watch tons of youtube videos last night with folks who have had GREAT success with their band...So....this was such an encouragement! We are going to do WELLLLL!!!! Don't worry..Yeah....easier said than done! But~~~I will check on you from my hospital room...or either from my house when I get home! We CAN do this!!!!
  25. A few weeks ago I was 98% certain I wanted to go ahead and have the sleeve. I have one more appointment and then I can get a surgery date. My insurance covers everything. After some soul searching I decided to start a pre-op diet that would be very similar to how I would have to eat the rest of my life. I gave myself a few guidelines, I wanted to stay under 1000-1200 calories, 60-80 grams of Protein and 64oz of Water. I also wanted to give myself a head start dealing with head hunger vs physical hunger. After the first 3 days everything fell into place. I have no problem hitting protien goals and staying below the 1000 calories. It's still early but at this point it's starting to become second nature. Each day that passes I want the sleeve less and less. Has anyone experienced something like this? I am currently down 9 pounds from this, it's just over a week. (I am sure it's mostly water) I know that most of us have had great success with weight loss in the past but gain it back. After talking with my surgeon he explained that there is a 2 year window where the surgery will cause weight loss, after that it's all you. He has seen numerous patients put the weight back on. Sorry for the rambling but I guess where I am at is this: Is it worth keeping up this lifestyle to lose the weight without surgery, even though it will take longer? Or is surgery the answer since you can't go back? After reading some posts where people will lose 3-4 pounds a month, I keep thinking that I can do that without surgery. Now I am not sure that the risks of surgery is worth it. Everyone I work with thinks I am nuts for having second thoughts. I would love to hear what other people have to say about this.
