Worried/Confused/Need to Understand
snowbird replied to gfjeblon's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Oh, dear, if I could only count the number of times I have lost 20 or 30 lb through dieting. Yet I was on my way back up to my highest weight of 255 when I had lap band surgery last October. I was pre diabetic, hypertensive, and had some bad knee pain. Now my blood sugar is 88, my blood pressure is 110/65, and I'm riding my bike 15 miles a day with no knee pain. I felt sore for a week or two after surgery, but managed the flight and two hour drive home the third day after the operation with no problem. Yes, I occasionally pb when I eat too fast or the wrong things. This is not a complication; it's the band stopping me from eating badly. I followed my doctor's pre op diet and lost 19 lb before surgery, but that certainly didn't make me feel I could lose what I needed to just by dieting, because without the surgery the loss wouldn't last. I followed all my doctor's post op diet recommendations and stuck to liquids for 3 weeks. I have had no complications and feel the band has been a total success for me. You could not pay me $160,000 to go back to the way I was before this surgery. I know you are worried about your wife's embarking on elective surgery, but please be very sure you are not letting your fears of how she may be able to beat obesity and become a new, happier person, intrude on your opinion of the surgery. The risks she runs from continuing to harm her body through her obesity are much greater than the risks she runs from the surgery itself. By the way, my husband and I were banded the same day. I wouldn't have it any other way, as we support each other, share our meals, commiserate (with a smile on our faces) about our bands, and understand each other's roadblocks and victories better than anyone else could. My daughter is banded too. This is the best thing that could have ever happened to our family. -
Thanks so much James I am having a mini bypass on June 27. Have been limiting food due to IBS for a couple weeks before the liquid pre op diet, down 13 pounds already . I will get some Imodium too thanks for your encouragement!

Toilet troubles! Advanced warning
SamDS100 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello apologies for the unsavory topic! I'm waiting to hear back from my surgical advice but wanted to ask here because people are so helpful, I'll be 3 weeks post op this sunday and every day since the surgery I've had bad diarrhea (as in complete liquid and orange) apologies tmi I know Has anyone else had this? I'm struggling because it makes me feel nauseous all day nearly and I know it's only a matter of time before I need to go and sit on the throne again, I lie down after and about 20 minutes later I dont feel so awful Surgery advice said they would expect it to be dumping syndrome but I haven't had sugars because they taste foul at the minute and I'm hardly eating or drinking either and it's been every flipping day now! I know it must clear up but it's making it so all I'm doing is lying down and feeling like I made a stupid decision Thanks in advance! Sam -
I have tried everything for my reflux and gerd. I was so frustrated with this ongoing condition, the lack of sleep it causes and taking EVERY medication known to man that three nights ago at 2:00AM, I did some research. I know this sound like snake oil but I swear on the Baby Jesus that this works for me and I hope it works for everyone with this condition. Don't laugh. EAT A HALF OF A PEELED APPLE AN HALF HOUR BEFORE BED. I use a Golden Delicious apple and put it in the blender to make a raw applesauce with a touch of honey. I peel the apple but you dont need to peel it. I have a hard time with apple peels passing through my band. I promise it works. I haven't used Pepicid, Tums, Zantac,Pepto, etc....for the past three days and I am sleeping throughout the night. Check out the article http://www.livestrong.com/article/30092-cure-acid-reflux-apples/ I hope this helps. Leanne

Should I be disappointed?
mylighthouse replied to FrecklesA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should definitely not be disappointed. You will read on this website that so many people have stalls... sometimes they last days, sometimes weeks. It has happened to me. When I was 2 weeks post op, I stopped losing weight for 2 weeks. Remember, you just had major surgery... your body needs time to heal and get used to the new changes.... the surgery itself, weight loss, etc. Also, from what I understand, the lower your starting weight, the slower the weight might come off. Do your best to try not to compare yourself to others weight loss. Yours might be slower and there is nothing wrong with that. Keep following your doctor's/nutritionist's plan and you will do just fine. High protein, over 64 ounces of liquids daily and a low carb diet. WIsh you the best. Keep your chin up. -
Hi everyone! My surgery date is set for December 9th. I am starting my prop diet on November 25 th. I don't have all of the details on it yet, but know that it will be 800 calories max per day. I am super nervous about this. I was thinking it would be great if I could lose some weight before the prop diet, so that the honeymoon phase of the sleeve could focus on not the first 20 lbs but the second and third 20 . What do you all think? Any recommendations on diet for the next two weeks? I'm meeting with my nutritionist again on the 18th. Thanks!

The last day of my old life
pistolpete replied to Morgandobes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is exactly how I felt on the "last" day. What motivated me is that now, I'm truly on the road to loosing weight and there's no going back from here. Just 2 weeks away from surgery, and it's on! It feels like my life is really going to change from here on out! Good luck, and know you're definitely not the only one! No problem is unfamiliar in this community! :biggrin0: -
My surgeon requires a 3 day 2 night stay and then at least 2 weeks off.

Getting Nervous!
Susie in Lima replied to gregorygirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey there, To answer your question...yep! You have to cut your food up very small at first and eat VERY slowly. After your initial phase of liquid diets, you gradually work your way up to eating solid foods. There are times that this progression is difficult but not impossible to handle. You will probably have to adjust the way that you eat for a while until your stomach is healed enough and your dr and nutritionist say that you can move on to other things. I have been sleeved for a little over a year now and can literally eat anything that I want to. I cant eat much of it, but I can eat it. So, eventually you will be able to eat any of those things that you mentioned on your list, just not as much. It is good that you arent a sweet eater (cause I am and I do miss that from time to time) Be careful eating ice cream though if that is an issue for you because it goes down way to easy and you will be getting a bunch of empty calories when you eat it. Every once in a while is ok but if it is something that is a temptation for you, I would say to try to avoid it if you can. I found it difficult at first when I was on my liquid diet and my family ordered pizza. That was one of the most difficult times for me, but I decided when I had those difficult times, to go do something else. Take a walk, read a book, take a bath etc. But now, I can eat an a piece of pizza every once in a while (and to tell you the truth, I wasnt missing much. It doesnt really appeal to me anymore) Yes, things are going to change in the way you eat, it has to so that this surgery will be a success for you. Follow your dr and nutritionist instructions, begin to exercise and then watch your body change! I have lost over 100 pounds, am at my goal weight, I run a 5K at least 3 days a week, I feel great, my health has drastically improved and my new nicknames are Tiny, Slim and Skinny! SOOOO worth the surgery, changing my eating habits and getting moving! You are going to do great! -
They had me start after my surgery, about the second to third week, if I remember right... When I could chew up foods...

Have A Question...
getnsknyntx replied to ThinnerTiff's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Dr says chewable vitamins after surgery they are also prescribing a b12 nasal mist I do once a week again after surgery. And I think 3 or 4 weeks out I start calcium Citrate at 3 months they do blood work to check my vitamin levels -
I feel the same way. If I didn't have the five scars I wouldn't think anything was done. I'm now 5 weeks out and at 21 pounds.
-
I lost quickly the first few weeks and now it's a pound or two a week. It differs for everyone and the less you have to lose, the slower your weight loss will be. Surgery for me was 1/17/17 and I've lost a total of 34 pounds...that is since the beginning of pre-op diet on 1/7/17.

I have been on Prilosec for years now and it does work better than Tums. I can't speak of the unfill ,never had that, but I do want you to know that reflux can do a lot of damage to Esophagus and I want you to talk with your Dr right away. But def take the Prilosec or Prevacid. Prilosec usually takes a week before you feel any different. You take care of yourself!

Well, gettin the old appetite back and still controling my porteins. I only eat half of what I get. Trying to make it to eat to live and not live to eat.:smile2: I have my fill aug 8th, kinda nervous but ready. To date I have lost 33lbs and kinda of at a plateau now, which sucks. But I know eventually it will get back. This has been the best thing I have ever done for myself and cannot wait to get the full effect of it all.

I met with my nutritionist this week and he gave me my Pre-op diet plan. I thought I would share since I haven’t been able to find a vegan plan on this website. 7-14 days prior to surgery The following diet will provide you with approximately 1000 calories and should meet your daily Protein requirements. The purpose of this diet is to deplete your glycogen (fat) stores, which in turn will help the liver to shrink and make your weight lost operation easier and safer. lean meat substitutes (70 grams protein) 2-3 cups non starchy vegetables Broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, onions, lettuce, carrots, tomato, green Beans, asparagus, radish, pickles, mushrooms May use fat free low calorie dressing or hummus 3 tsp fat Olive oil, canola oil, Grapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Flaxseed oil, Walnuts, Hemp Oil or Sesame oil Calorie Free liquids Water, propel, crystal light, fruit2O, plain coffee, plain tea Protein Supplement Protein shake Garden of Life Raw Protein Beyond Organic Protein Formula I’ve already started this diet even though I don’t have a date set. I am having a hard time getting in 1,000 calories.

How much time did you take off work?
SuzeMuze replied to Luckyinluv's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took two weeks off, and am doing fine at work, but get very tired by the post-dinner hour. As long as I can get to sleep at a reasonable hour, I'm ok with getting up and starting it all again. It may also depend on the age(s) of the special needs students you work with, as younger students can be more physically demanding than secondary age students. -
You should check with your surgeon's office, but generally waiting for 6 weeks is required. Best wishes.

I have Aetna and they reqiure three months of PCP monitored diet, psych eval, etc. Well, on Sat during my first visit to my PCP, she looked at me like I had two heads and told me that she doesn't get reimbursed for "weight loss visits". Then she said that she can't get reimbursed for the EKG they did because there was no reason to have one done (Pre-op is not a reason). After a lot of explaining, I convinced her to see me 2 more times (self pay) and she said that she would see me just to agree with whatever the nutritionist is saying. So for my other visits (abdominal ultrasound, bloodwork, chest x-ray, etc.) do I have to "fake symptoms" so they will cover it? I have an open access plan, so getting the PCP to make a referral isn't an obsticle (thank goodness because she's doing minimal work on this). I need to know if Aetna will pay for my other visits to specialists.

thinking about it
WASaBubbleButt replied to aunttnursing's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am a nurse too, I used to do 7-12 hour shifts in a row and then I was off for a week. So I relate to your question. If you read through the forum you'll find a wealth of information. Eating at regular hours is not really an issue, you can always grab a piece of cheese or a Protein bar if you are hungry. Weight loss will significantly improve comorbidities. sleep apnea seems to go away from what most here write. Diabetes typically goes into remission, labs improve. Most of all being a nurse and walking around for 12 hours is MUCH easier after weight loss! Research, read, study, find everything you can. Research various WLS types, doctors, obesity studies, the works. Leave nothing out. Just know what you are getting into so you can be prepared to get this done. ANY WLS type is going to be tough, it's hard losing weight. I can't do it the traditional way, it's just too hard. No self control.... call it what you will. I still can't do it. Banding is hard but it's the kind of hard we can do, our population. It makes weight loss possible for the first time ever. I understand your issues related to food/meals/nursing. If I can help please let me know. -
Not drinking enough water?
Carrie_C replied to kc hoping's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was banded 5/22. I am having the same problems as you. I am not drinking enough either. Having to wait an hour after I drink sometimes makes me not want to drink at all, or I forget. I had my first fill last week and it did nothing for me. I have no restriction either. And I have to wait 3 more weeks for another fill.
