How did you get over your addiction?
Guest replied to JerseyJules's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have to be ready to want to lose. Like you said, it's a tool. I have two customers that went thru it, and now after 5 years, they both gained it all. One said it was sweets, she had personal grief (daughter passed) and she started just stuffing with sweets. The other two a couple said they just kept eating more and more carbs and went back to old habits. I know you said you don't wan to eat like before (4 slices of pizza), start practicing now. Order a salad, and a small pizza. Kids get a slice and some veggies or salads, and if they want a second....well kids if they play can handle one. Just practice. Today I picked up Chinese for my hub, and it's the first time I paid $6 for both our food. He just got way less stuff, a bit of sesame chicken and a lot less rice. I had two steamed dumplings (could only eat half the pork of one) and maybe a spoonful of rice. I had been sick and not eaten much since Sunday, so figured it was ok. I had only had one egg, one slice cheese Saturday, 1/2 yogurt Sunday, 1/2 Premier Protein yesterday. Very dehydrated, so figured the sodium would be ok. The addiction is vicious, in my head I can't even see an Olive Garden commercial. I love Pasta and that's all I think about. Been careful eating what I am suppose to. Til got sick Saturday. So the head hunger is a strong nasty enemy. Only sleeved on 1/10. -
We're actually fairly close on numbers - I was sleeved about 2 weeks after you. Well, and am 45 [emoji16]. But girl, you have lost a TON of weight! Just this week I finally hit 50 down on the scale. After surgery, it took me almost a month just to get back down to my day of surgery weight, so I'm not a super fast loser. I AM get hungrier and able to eat more. Not starving, but definitely transitioning to real food. So yeah, I will eat part of a hamburger - but no bun. Cheese and turkey summer sausage - and no crackers. Chicken, verde sauce, and cheese topped with a dollop of Greek yogurt. Eating for protein really does make a difference for me. And the restriction is still there - I've had pretty severe anemia and couldn't eat very much for a couple of days. And man, my first piece of meat after was like, two bites and done. But I also see my grandma (diabetic) snacking on crackers all day and wondering why her health is failing and say, "Yeah, let's not do that." I had a blood transfusion yesterday, in addition to iron treatments, and the doctor is trying to fast track me for a hysterectomy. (Peri-menopausal + jacked hormones + weight loss is proving to be too much for my body.) I also have a bad ankle I'm hoping to get back to PT for soon. In June, I'll be 46. So there's no way on earth a healthy young thing like you can't stay on track if I can [emoji16]. September to summer birthdays! Even with surgeries, I'll keep trying [emoji106]. It won't be an instant miracle, but as long as it keeps going, I'll consider myself blessed. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Wow - that update ate some text! Well, OP already knows what I said about waiting 3 months and trying very small half flat sips for the probiotics. And talking to my NUT. And waiting like, a half hour between sips. Oh - and being really careful of the carbs - some are way more sweetened than others. As for the jello, some of the paleo crew make kombucha gummies for the probiotics. You might want to check those out - gelatin and kombucha probiotics are a powerful gut health combo. I just made very weak jello post-op using Great Lakes gelatin dissolved in water and then whisked into some flat kombucha. It was okay - I really, REALLY would not risk any carbonation right after surgery. I keep meaning to try some newer versions just for the jello and general gut health aspect, but haven't gotten around to it. Do you like kefir? The stuff in the states has had the carbonation killed off, but I did drink unsweetened kefir with a couple drops of flavored stevia post-op. Again, mostly for the probiotics. But it's not a bad yogurt drink, either. I have never been an unsweetened person, but tastes change and post-op, the sweet leaf berry stevia drops are pretty good. How much is to much sugar in a day
James Marusek replied to Lovelyladybee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After gastric bypass surgery, many people use yogurt. Generally the advise is to avoid yogurt with fruit on the bottom because the fruit generally has added sugar. Greek yogurt is better than normal yogurt because it has almost twice the protein content. So I would recommend that you select a yogurt with "no added sugar". Read the ingredient label for contents and avoid any yogurt with process sugar listed in the ingredients. Milk and milk products can contain natural sugars. So even though the yogurt may indicate 6 grams of sugar, if it is all derived from natural sugars contained in the dairy used to make the yogurt, that will not present a problem. -

Starting Soft foods, suggestions welcomed
_Kate_ replied to janedoe92's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Soft flaky fish, chopped turkey or chicken, cheese and cottage cheese, boiled eggs, thicker scrambled eggs or poached eggs, advocado, thicker Soups, greek yogurt, soft fruits (nothing with seeds in them for this stage). Very soft veg which is not fibrus. Protein drinks and things from Phase 1. I think thats what I lived on for this stage. Kate -
lol, it's funny you say "regular yogurt". It's really only America that eats what you probably consider normal. I have to admit, it took some getting used to, but I accidently grabbed one of my daughters yogurts not too long ago. Oh god, it was awful! It was slimy like mucus to me! It's all about what you are used to. Take any greek yogurt and put it in the freezer for a while. Just before it freezes, it's almost like ice cream. That's how I transitioned over to it. Hell, half the time now I just eat plain unflavored yogurt.

Taken a step back, can't seem to drink more than 32-40 oz of Water. I think maybe dehydrated a bit again, felt great Friday, worked, got home, cooked for hub, did 3 loads laundry, perfect day. Then Saturday ate one egg/sl cheese, and could not eat any other food that day, had a half a yogurt yesterday (can't stand those Dannon or Oikos, need to get to Wholefoods). Will try and eat something now. Do not feel like eating at all. Still feverish, got fever and chills Saturday, and now have migraine and body aches. I am trying to drink as much possible. I am 4 weeks tomorrow from VSG. -

Are you doing ok? I see it's been 4 mos. I am only out 4 weeks. Just checking to see if you have had any issues. Friday I felt great, worked all day, came home, cooked, did 3 loads of laundry, amazing night. Then Saturday had fever, chills, and could not even eat, had one egg and slice of cheese. Could not eat yesterday, had 1/2 a yogurt. Maybe it's just dehydration, trying to drink. Felt horrible, a tad better today low grade temp 99.7 today. Took a toll of my body. I was sleeved in Tijuana as well. -
Planning for the long ride home
trekker954 replied to stayingyoung's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
are you on a direct flight and where are you flying from? Often its the flights into the US that have stricter policies on liquids. If flying directly into Mexico without a US connection, depending where, you may be able to bring yogurt and such. If you are on a one meal plus shakes for the pre surgery diet, you might make up some turkey and cheese roll ups. You may have to resort to powders and bring a shaker bottles if you are on liquids only prior to your surgery. You'll need that for the flight home as well. how soon before and how soon after your surgery are you flying? I suggest you bring a full size, yet flat pillow to put on your tummy and then the seatbelt for your trip home. Those pillows, even on the long flight if in coach are crappy and won't cover enough. -
I take two servings a day to 6 to 8 ounces of water, or add it to applesauce, yogurt anything really. Just make sure to get your water in, when taking benefiber it will work against you if not hydrated. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App

Don't do Protein shakes if you can't stomach them. I didn't. The two week pre surgery diet was hell to me because I hated them. After surgery, I didn't have even one. I hid Protein powder in other ingredients, like Soup, early on, and did a lot of dairy to get my protein up. Fairlife milk is just as good as Protein Shakes, honestly, and Greek yogurt is also an excellent source. I was determined to do it in a healthy way without fake foods, and I did. And still am at 9 months out! You can too. Sent from my Nexus 6P using the BariatricPal App

Looking for people who are likely to get surgery in Spring 2017!
char3672 replied to boogie_badd8nt_she's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also scheduled for June, snd I have noticed that when I eat something "bad" or too much of something, I don't feel as guilty. I guess it's kind of like not taking care of your car because you know you are trading it in. I realized I was doing this, so I started making some small changes. I've been trying out Protein shakes and bars to see which one I'll use after surgery. I have been NOT eating something just because it's there. I switched to sugar free things and high protein yogurt. I am going to make bigger changes as I get closer. I don't want to get "too far gone" Sent from my SM-G930T using the BariatricPal App -
Hi All! This Tuesday marks 6 weeks. I am down 20 lbs since GB surgery, and very happy about that. The slower I lose, the less saggy skin I'll have to deal with. I am really pushing my Protein ( in a dire attempt to prevent hairloss) which is contributing to a higher caloric intake. For me, I cannot tolerate Any fish. It constantly feels stuck, so I am avoiding it for awhile. Ground Turkey and dark meat chicken have been a life saver. I am on low residue (soft cooked food) and Tuesday I can start the long term general diet. Below is what I have been eating for 2 weeks with no problem. Turkey chili, beef chili, lunch meat, deli cheese, eggs/whites, refried Beans, whole beans, yogurt, decaf coffee with protein, decaf chai tea made with milk, avocado, quacomole. Homemade applesauce with skins. Chicken ( prefer dark) I will start adding more veggies this week. Steamed broccoli felt really dense, like it took up alot of space. Think I might try a spinach fruit protein smoothie. Also, zone perfect Protein Bars were fine too! I was worried because they have like 23 carbs, but no dumping at all. My Nut said as long as it's balanced with protein and none of this ingredients ending in 'tol' I should be fine. I add Fiber every other day and consume approx 100 ounces of Water in addition to decaf. I have No bathroom issues and sometimes go daily!! Score. I have not felt hunger. Of course my mind is hungry, I am and will probably will be in therapy (for life) to guide me so that the impact of food on my life is minimal. Happy Sunday to everyone. Hungry and craving foods Post surgery. Any help on this ?
AGreenEyedWolf replied to crivera's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel you. Almost 2 weeks out and I still crave food all the time, too. All I can tell you is to occupy your mind. Set yourself goals of how often to do your intake (I sip Clear liquids all day... but at 730, 1030, 130, 430, and 730 I add in a full liquid item like Protein shake, Soup, yogurt, etc) keeping it evenly spaced will help with how hungry you feel. Plus, take on a hobby or start a walking regimen or something... I make a point of getting 10,000 steps a day, minimum... so when I'm feeling hungry but it's not "time" for something specific, I walk till I get to the next milestone I need out of my 10,000 It's a struggle... but it is worth it and it will improve!! I am almost 2 years out and I still cannot stand Protein drinks. Hate them. The first year they did make me want to vomit, now they are just gross but I can stomach them. If it were not for the protein cake I never would have made my protein goals though. It looks like everyone so far that has posted are pretty new, so maybe they aren't familiar with the protein cakes either. It's really simple though. In a big coffee cup or a small bowl add one scoop of Protein Powder. I use Gold Standard whey, but you can use whatever whey you want. It needs to be whey though. Add just enough coffee creamer to turn it into a batter. Add one half teaspoon baking powder (not soda). I microwave mine for 25 seconds for a lava cake type consistency. Others will go for about 45 for a fluffy cake. If I am feeling really fancy, I use my add Peanut Butter to the batter and "ice" the cake with plain yogurt.

I love yogurt! Greek or regular. But I'm really lactose intolerant, nothing to do with surgery. I tried eating yogurt and the same week i started getting the WORST stomach cramps, gas and diarrhea. I realized it was from the extra dairy and since stopping haven't had an issue. Really sucks cause i love yogurt and the oikos 000 is my fave right now. But no luck. Anyone have any non dairy high Protein options. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App

Between 12 and 3 pm- Walking treadmill for 40 mins. 2 pm. 16 oz Water with Crystal Light and scoop of protein powder. Between 3 and 6 pm -Walking Treadmill 40 mins 6 pm Yogurt (triple zero) or runny mashed potatoes or strained Soup 8 pm sf jello, pudding or Popsicle. Take Calcium chewables. This will change when I go back to work, but for now, it provides a routine I can stick to! Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App -

Thanks for the insight everyone. At this stage, I'm focusing on Protein and Water, but I'm so sick of Protein shakes, yogurt, and cottage cheese I'd just as soon not "eat" at all. That's a problem I thought I'd never have! :-D

I wanted something more filling a few days post op also. Maybe you are ready to try yogurt or a few sips of protein shake?
