  1. Here's my "knees and WLS testimony." I had WLS at 68 years of age. My knees were a complete mess -- especially the right one. The most I could bend them was a 45 degree angle. For years, my knee x-rays looked like gravel bars -- full of stuff that had shredded off the cartilage and mineral deposits that had accreted around those bits and pieces making them even larger. And yes, I had very bad knee pain when I was heavier and had suffered for years. Sometimes the pain was so bad I even had to use a cane. I'd discussed knee replacement surgery with my PCP, but hadn't gotten to the point of scheduling it. But I knew it was in my future. Then I had WLS at 235.6 pounds. I set my weight goal at 150 pounds, which I hadn't weighed in 40 years! At 5'5" a normal BMI for me started at 149 pounds. I didn't care -- 150 pounds seemed like a nice round number. BTW, I stopped taking Aleve and all other NSAIDs a few months prior to WLS. Yes, my knees hurt, but a few weeks after stopping the NSAID I realized they didn't hurt anymore than they had on the Aleve. Fascinating, eh? Eventually, 8.5 months after surgery, my scales rolled down to 150 pounds. I was at goal. By that point, needless to say, my knees felt a lot better. I wasn't doing black diamond runs, but I was walking up to 5 miles a day -- and fast. They still didn't bend anymore than they had before, but they were a lot more functional. One of my health goals for that first year post-op was to be able to walk up and down my front steps without holding on to anything, a goal I blew right by! I no longer felt like an old lady. So at 150 pounds I upped my calories to 1700 and started to maintain. But I slowly, slowly kept losing weight -- 1 or 2 pounds a month for the next 8 months. Eventually, my body stopped losing weight at 135 pounds. IT WAS THOSE LAST 15 POUNDS I LOST THAT MADE THE GREATEST DIFFERENCE IN MY KNEES! No, they still don't bend anymore than they once did. But at 70 years of age I am working hard (in yoga) on increasing my flexibility. My PCP told me to take knee surgery off the agenda completely -- I don't need it anymore. I can walk as far as I want and as long as it's still light outside. I can even jog a little. Not saying anyone else would or could have this result. But this was mine. It is one of my greatest NSVs from WLS.

    5 Day Pouch Test

It's a way to jump start ur weight loss. Two days of liquids , one day of soft foods, one day firm proteins and one day of dense proteins... It's a back to basics test to reset ur sleeve
  3. hi there, Need some advice/guidance/suggestions from fellow bandsters. I will be 7 weeks post op tomorrow. I lost about 8 pounds during the liquid post op phase and have only lost 2 more pounds since. I've had two fills so far and both of them don't seem to provide me much restriction. The most recent one was 8 days ago. I think I have about 4cc's total. I called again this morning to make another appointment as yesterday as I ate a hamburger - bread and all - with no problem I realized this just can't be adequate restriction (can it?). And I want to start losing weight! Soon after making my appt for this Saturday, my husband and I went out to lunch at Sharky's. I was good and got a power (protein) plate..thinking it was a healthier choice. I had only had an nonfat iced blended coffee this morning so this was my first "meal" of the day. I took small bites...but suddenly, I got pain in my chest. It was my second stuck episode and I was in public. Worse, there was only a single bathroom so I could not wait it out without drawing serious attention to myself. I quickly left the restaurant and spent nearly the next 45 minutes PB'ing in a cup next to poor DH in his car, during my work lunch hour. I must of PB'd 8-10 times before I felt better. My first stuck episode was in the AM, 3 weeks post op...I had bread. I think I deserved it, or at least is was explainable. But the small bites of steak (which I have regularly)? So what I am wondering is how can I feel no restriction, eat a burger, and then get stuck on a little bite of meat the very next day. After being stuck, I wanted to drive straight to the ER and remove my band. And now I feel fine, apprehensive to eat, but I keep burping the taste of the whole stuck episode. I never want to experience it again but sadly, I think that it's eminent. ..right? Please please share with me your tricks, if you have any, to: 1. Avoid getting stuck 2. Recognizing when you are stuck 3. Making the pain more bearable 4. Tricks/tips to make an episode pass faster? 5. Do you pros still get stuck? 6. Do you taste the PB for the rest of the day? 7. How many fills did you have before you felt good restriction? 8. Does getting stuck mean I do have adequate restriction?? I sure hope not cuz my scale isn't moving much... 9. Should I now not get a fill? I felt restriction during the 2 days liquids and then once I introduced food again, it was like GONE. Sorry for my rant/raving/ and multiple questions. Any advice and tips would be appreciated.
  4. Ok.. A little background During my first unplanned, later in life pregnancy (I was about to turn 40, back in 2013) this particular nurse practitioner suggested that I terminate the pregnancy. I was floored. I'm am a married woman in a stable relationship and this suggestion was way out of line. Unfortunately this pregnancy did not turn out good and we lost the baby. I should've run then but I didn't. In 2014 I found myself expecting again.. Shocker because I have PCOS and in the 20 years of marriage at the time I had only ovulated a couple of times. We never used protection. Which wasn't our best plan, I know.. I was getting excited, we made it past the first few weeks. But Sadly this also did not turn out well and we lost another baby. At my follow up appointment this same nurse practitioner was rude yet again..in her manner of suggesting permanent birth control do to my weight and age. I love my doctor..she is wonderful, her beside manner was the best during my difficult trials. Id hate to leave the practice but today was just another dig. It's been a few years since I've been to the Drs. Since my last miscarriage. So I didn't think much about who I saw. That is until she walked into the room and all these emotions came flooding back. Of course you have to update your medical records. This included my surgery. She saw the scars during my exam so there wasn't any hiding it. It was her comments about my weight loss that really ticked me off today. "So you're BMI is coming down. That's good but you have more to go". I'm not looking for a pat on the back from medical professionals but I've lost almost 60 freaking pounds since I last saw her and my more to go is 25 lbs. If I stay I'm definitely requesting to see my Dr and not this Nurse practitioner. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    newbie banded 8/17

Hey scrapqueen.... I was banded on 8/17 also...we are band twins!!! First of all, doesn't your doctor have you working with a dietian? If not, you should ask him/her about this. I just started my pureed/mushies last Wednesday and up until then I was on liquids. I was given a "diet" to follow by my dietian, but it is very conservative. I believe if you are eating about 1200-1500 calories WITH NO LESS than 60 grams of Protein you are doing just fine. As far as losing weight....this is a healing time. Once you get a fill, then you are on the road to weight loss. Good Luck....
  6. Aunt Lucy.. it really does feel wonderful.. if you knew the kind of life I lead surrounded by size 0's.. constantly being told.. "you would be so beautiful if you would only lose weight ".. and "all you need to do is keep your lips closed'... some horrible comments.. OR the opposite.. just overly sympathetic.. almost as if I am terminally ill!!... anyway... I got braces this year.. for me.. I got new contact lenses.. for me.. and I thought.. NO MORE DIETS.. time to take control and do this thing.. no more denying it.. I need a life altering tool to bring me back to my former self.. I am having to pay for it all myself as I can't get any insurance company to cover it.. but it will be worth every cent. I have my appointment with my surgeon on Tuesday. I am hoping to make a date. They haven't mentioned a diet at all .. so it may be that it isn't necessary. I am in Europe having it done..near to where I work. So I hope to go in on a Friday and be back working on the Monday.. I live where I work so they are giving me time to adjust over the weekend... I just want to get it done now.. really hate the thought of waiting any more.. Oh have spent this evening looking at clothing stores.. I want to surprise my parents in NZ when I go at Christmas.. mmm I wonder what size I will be by then!!??.. anyway.. thank you so much for your support!.. I really appreciate it.. I am hoping for good things and it is so great to know I am not alone!.. kind regards to you and thanks Kizze

    Help tight

I'm feeling a little better, not really able to eat much but maybe that is how it is suppose to be. Hope you continue your weight loss as I continue mine, best of luck!

    Help tight

Didisom1 this was me 2 weeks ago. I thought I could wait it out even though I couldn't eat and barely drink even Water in the morning time until after 6pm. Sure I was losing weight but I was getting stuck, vomiting and developed a strange pain when I swallowed. After getting advise from all these fine people I got a small .5 cc un-fill and feel so much better. I was scared about the pain and thought I messed up my band. Luckily no harm. If your too tight in the am and can not drink or eat you should get an un-fill. No amount of weight loss is worth hurting yourself over. Good Luck.
  9. Following this thread because my right knee is shot. I'm down to 179 pounds and still need cortisone shots every four months in the right knee (I was able to stop the left). I'm on no NSAIDs and no other painkillers except Arthritis Tylenol. Still can't do a bicycle. The right knee can't do the up-bend. I tried yoga last year with comical results. Trying to hold a pose with the sound of machine-gun fire coming from my knees caused me to bust out laughing. I didn't go back. Im very encouraged to hear that reaching my goal weight of 145 might make a further difference. I've lost 120 so far. JustWatchMe

    Worried about failing

My only word of advice is to RELAX. If you follow all the rules and diets of the lapband you will lose weight. Everyone is nervous, just try and relax and focus on the start of a new you. This is the start of a happier and healthier you, and the lapband is the tool that will help make that possible! Good luck to you tommorrow, and I'm sending you positive vibes.

    Worried about failing

Brockbabe is so right! You are still healing. Between now and your first fill, you may not lose anything. I gained and lost the same 4 pounds several times. But once you get a couple of fills, start feeling some restriction, and are better able to eat as you are supposed to, you will start that consistent weight loss you've been impatiently waiting for! Also, understand that you can eat TOO LITTLE! If you don't give your body adequate "fuel", it will store everything you take in for fear it's going to stop completely. Track what you eat ... write it down or log it on one of several websites. Try to aim for 1,000 - 1,200 calories per day. Drink 8 glasses or so of Water.

    Stretched pouch?

Yes, there is a way to find out if you've stretched it. Have them do a fill using Flora - that way they can see the pouch. Mine is slightly stretching, which the Dr. felt may mean I'm too tight. But I'm not filling any restriction either so go figure. The good news is you can reverse it. Check out this website. Surgical Weight Loss 5 Day Pouch Test

    Any bandsters with MS?

I have MS. The band and losing weight can't treat or cure MS but losing weight has tremendously helped symptoms effecting my legs. I used to need a cane just to get around my home and now I walk two miles a day without any aid.

2nd Thoughts- 3 days from surgery

Hi there, I wish you the best no matter what your decision... I had my sleeve 12/11, with similar stats as you...McButterpants was in my original "Sleeve" group on Facebook, and I had second thoughts too...so much that postponed my sleeve from November to December. I really wish I had not worried so...the surgery was a breeze, the recovery the first two days was sore and a bit painful, but not terribly so. And now I am down almost 50 lbs and feel SO much better about myself, my body, and my future. I agree, the weight loss through shakes, etc., can be quick, but is very, very difficult to sustain. I know, Ive done it many times. The sleeve gives you a physical barrier to overeating, and for me, it has really helped with my hunger most of the time. God bless...
  15. Kayla - We are sleeve sisters! I often think about January when I went to my seminar, I try and remember what exactly prompted me to even sign up for it. Could be the pictures from my daughters wedding on 1-1-11 or maybe all the prep leading up to the wedding, including shopping for a dress for myself and hating how I looked. Like you, I started out thinking lap band and switched when I heard about VSG. I can't believe where I am weight wise, down 78 lbs since January, with a little more than 40 lbs to goal (I'm short, 4'11''). I've had a rough time of it the last few months and hoping I am on the upswing.

2nd Thoughts- 3 days from surgery

Thanks for your posts. It is much appreciated. I would not go longer with a pre-op liquid diet. I was concerned at having surgery with 75 lbs to lose, and have the concern of losing too much weight with the sleeve. And wondering if 75 lbs, was even a number that I should be having surgery for now. I have a few more days and I will post again. Thanks
  17. Hi Everyone I have been banded since August and had 2 fills but not had much weight loss success yet. I am going on holiday in 5 weeks and some friends were really recommending the vibration training/power plate things for inch loss. As I have not told anyone about the lapband I couldn't ask this question there, but do you think it is ok for me to use the power plates or can they harm the lapband. A special offer is going on if you take a 4 week package at the moment but I didn't want to sign up without confirming if it was safe. Thanks MD
  18. Is there a WLS support group at your hospital or associated with your surgeon's practice? Perhaps hubby could attend 1 of those meetings with you. You could let him come here and read some of the pre and post-op threads. That would give both of you a realistic view of what to expect. You'll see lots of posts from people who are in the first few days post-op who have some pain, but then those same people come back a few days later and they are in much better shape. There are a few complications, but even those people usually say "I'd do it all again". For me, the choice was easy. I was told "Lose the weight or die" and this was the right choice to make. I have watched a 52 year old aunt let obesity rob her of her eyesight, her mobility, and her independence over the last several years. She's had so many "minor" surgeries on her feet, her arms, her eyes from various complications of obesity and diabetes. This is the woman I used to party with. We'd go out and dance all night long and we both treasured our ability to take care of ourselves and others. Now, she's a shell of the woman she was. I do NOT want to be that person! So, my point is that you (general you) can have this ONE surgery and start improving the quality of your life and hopefully head off bad complications or you can stay where you are at and possibly have to have several surgeries for various complications. I think that it's much easier to have one surgery and work the sleeve! BTW, I like the term pessimistic optimist. I updated all of my estate planning before surgery and made sure I'd loved on all of my family and friends. I was prepared for the worst outcome and was truly shocked when I woke up in recovery!! Good luck to you and hubby with your journey!!
  19. I was sleeved on 12/12/14 and have done really well with my program. I still have a protein drink for breakfast every morning. Here is my issue & I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing or did experience this. I will think in my head something sounds so good...a few weeks ago it was a chipotle bowl (no rice) I was on the treadmill thinking how good it sounded, after the gym I went there got the bowl, went home had a bite & it wasn't nearly as good as it was in my mind. (It was dinner for the week and I still threw quite a bit away) tonight I thought sloppy joes sounded good & I found these potatoes that were a weight watchers recipe that sounded good...got home from work made the sloppy joes and potatoes, had 2 bites and it just didn't taste good at all. Has this happened to anyone else? I'd rather eat protein drinks & a Greek yogurt because my head is playing so many games with me .
  20. What you need for maintenance is what you need for maintenace, which is quite individual (probably more so than for the loss phase,) The calculators on MFP and other such sites are pretty general and are optimized for semi-:"normal" people, while there is good evidence that overweight and formerly overweight people tend to run lower metabolic rates than the quoted rates, sometimes substantially so. If you are still losing at 1200 per day, then 2000 is a good guess as to what you might maintain on, but I wouldn't depend upon it - you basically have to increase your intake to the point where you are no longer losing, but not gaining either. For me, that is around 2000, but I was losing fairly rapidly on 1100-1200 (down about 105 lb to goal in about seven months) and my old fat self was stable in the 2600-2700 calorie range. I also have the advantage of a guy's metabolism (which tends to run a bit higher than women's) and a fairly high lean body mass, which is a major factor in establishing one's resting metabolic rate (and why most successful weight loss programs emphasize strength training as a major part of the exercise portion of the program as that helps to maintain lean mass while burning fat.) As long as you are trying to lose, try to keep that caloric deficit as high as tolerable and when you get to your goal start increasing intake to the point where things are stable. If you are struggling to still lose at 1200, then your maintenance intake may be 1200-1500 range.

    Lap Band Fills

Hi, I have been having a problem trying to get adjusted to a good fill. I am tight but able to eat a cup of food generally. As long as I chew enough and don't eat rice or pasta. The problem is I get hungry very often so eat too much throughout the day. Just not at one sitting. I've lost about 45lbs since May 19th. But gained 1 lb over the last month. Need advice. Elaine
  22. I was stuck for 3 weeks at between 180-185 fluctuating. Talk about driving me nuts!! Then finally I was 180, then the next day 179.5, then 179. Then I stopped weighing for 2 days ( well.... I was too tired by end of day). I weighed myself last night. I came in at 170.5!!!! 9 pounds in 3 days???? Holy moly !!!!! That must have been stuck water weight right? I'm almost at my second goal already!!! My first was to be under 200 ( hit that in 2-3 weeks). Then I roughed out where i thought I'd be at a happy medium. 160 popped in my head. That's only 10 pounds away!! I'm only about 9-10 weeks out. I'm finding this all pretty crazy.
  23. Headed to hospital for upper GI. My surgery date 2/4/13. Just a few days ago I have been having problems with the puréed foods I had been eating or even Jello. It is causing pain and nausea . Even Water is starting to hurt to drink. Called the surgeon yesterday and he scheduled me for test today.... Praying for answers. I just want to be "normal" again... calorie intake post surgery

I was wondering the same thing I am 2 weeks post op and excercise daily and my calorie intake is around 500 -550 per day-- i do feel full when I eat - trying to stick to mushie solids with high protein. Is this going to cause me to stop losing weight?
  25. I had an amazing thanksgiving! I ate but never felt out of place. Everyone noticed my weight loss and was SO supportive and happy for me. All in all, it was wonderful.
