Having A Hard Time After Surgery
divagirl78 replied to katie.brooks's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi. I had the revision to the sleeve on 10/31 and I too feel pretty blah and just want to sleep. I think every day gets better. You are not alone. What I am hating right now are the gas pains. -
6 weeks update with pictures!

Thank you:) Yes, I was at goal. I had the sleeve on June, 2012 SW 230. The day of my plastic surgery I weighted 121. To answer your question about the TT, for me the TT only make my stomach flat. I had my TT in 2007 after having kids. I just had a TT and belly button scar revision this time with my LBL, Butt Augmentation using the fat flap, Breast Augmentation and Medial Thigh Lift. -
Banded For Over 4 Years And I Have Struggled Since Day 1...it's Time For This Band To Be Removed!
karewpah replied to Lyse8432's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I would say that your experience sounds like a slip. I experienced a slip about a year ago. Vomiting, couldn't keep food down, vomiting blood, reflux at night... As the other posters said...do get back to your surgeon. I had revision surgery and have been trouble free for a year. -
There is a long standing band to sleeve revision forum that has been in place for years in the Sleeve area. I think the bypass has something similar. I don't want to bash anybody for their choice and I hope my comments were not construed as such. what is difficult for someone like me who had the band, and really had problems for 10 years before revising, and saw lots of other people with problems (I was banded in 2001 to 2011) - well it is hard to not answer when people ask about your experiences. I can also see that my "answer" is in some ways not fair if the band design is in fact greatly improved so my "experience" may not even be relevant to someone making the choice today. What I do stand by is that I think the band is just a little more finicky... a little harder to get "just right" and so I can see the value of a healthy, active support group. It would have helped me alot when I was banded. Instead, what I got every time was that the problem was "patient compliance" - which was rough because I wanted to comply but I could not seem to get the stars aligned (ie I was either too tight or constantly hungry). We don't discuss it much, but I also think it is kind of silly how many people bash the bypass because they know someone who regained. Well, you can regain after ANY WLS and lots of people have had the bypass over the last 20 years so no wonder that has been observed. It is still the gold standard surgery for a reason. I am pleased with my choice of the sleeve, but frankly there is a fair amount of uneducated criticisms of other procedures all over the place.

Slipped Band, Considering Revision, Have Questions...
Jeneen B replied to babykins529's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I also had difficulty with my band, it slipped, and I am at manager at a hospital. My band was covered under one insurance while my revision to gastric bypass was covered under another insurance carrier. My physician did not have any difficulty with my carrier to prove it was medically necessary to complete the surgery. I began the process last August and had gastric bypass November 10. My physician required I attend three informational meetings that are held once monthly before he would complete the surgery—this is the only reason for the delay. I also did not have reflux until the band slipped but medication did not help me. What my surgeon found while I was in surgery was a tremendous amount of adhesions had formed where the band was originally placed. The “reflux pain” I was describing was actually caused by the adhesions. I was in surgery for an hour and half longer than expected. He believes my issues were caused by the adhesions in addition to the band slipping. Unlike my band my recovery was slower than I expected due in part to the extensive surgery they needed to complete and the length of time I was under anesthesia. I was out of work for three weeks and returned part time for almost two weeks. Due to my commute (1hr 15 min each way) the first week back to work I was only able to manage to stay onsite until noon, but, this was due to exhaustion more than anything. The second week I had more strength and by the end of the week I was able to work a full 8 hour day. About mid to late January I started to feel more like myself and did not require a nap on the weekend every week. The last 6-8 months with my band my weight did not change. Since my surgery I have lost an additional 32 pounds. Good Luck! -
Slipped Band, Considering Revision, Have Questions...
lauradevans replied to babykins529's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am very sorry to hear you are having issues. I've been there. I was banded in Oct 2012, had revision from a slip after getting very sick with a stomach bug June 2013... did ok for a few months then my band failed and I had it removed Nov 2013. I had Gastic Sleeve just this past Monday (the 16th) and I feel great. I did have to spend 1 night in the hospital which I didn't with the band but I was thankful for the constant pain meds and nausea meds in my iv and attention I got. I came home about 3:30 on Tuesday and only had nausea that night. Haven't had to take pain or nausea meds since Tuesday night. Stomach sore like with the band just getting from sitting to standing position. Taking that 1st shower was heaven and I felt so much better too. Just been sipping on Clear liquids and Protein drinks every 30 mins or so. I can tell that I can't hold much for sure and yesterday I got to see my new itty-bitty banana shaped stomach! My doctor does a Barium Swallow to check for leaks and reflux on day 3 so it was neat to see that after 5 sips my stomach was full... I had to wait a few hours to add Water to that since the barium was so thick. Good luck in your decision but I can say, I'm not regretful for sleeving at all!!! -
Well during my pre- op today I found out he does a 40. He explained that less was just in millimeters and his experience is anything less than a 38 puts you at a greater risk of problem including mal-absorption and ultimately leading to a bypass. I have to trust that he knows this to be true and am content with his explanation- worst case scenario in 10-20 years I need a revision. to my revision.. lol...

I would love to hear stories from those who have been converted from a lap band to a sleeve. My revision was approved and I will most likely have mine done all in one procedure at the end of April. Was your revision done in one or two procedures? What is it like compared to the lap band? Thanks!!!

When people ask, do you tell them about WLS?
Notinks replied to Maineman's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
When I had my LAP band in Jan 2004, I told very, very few people. I didn't want to deal with comments, questions, or judgments. I revised to RNY 16 days ago and I am telling anyone who asks. It is just so much easier than trying to be coy and making stuff up. I lived like that for 10+ years when I had to go puke in a restaurant bathroom, etc. and it is just way more freeing to not have to do that. That being said, I'm not going to post about it on Facebook....I don't really want every fringe acquaintance to know. Maybe I'll feel differently once I am at goal. -
Lap band revision to sleeve
Cleo's Mom replied to ette16's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Go on the band to sleeve revision thread for additional answers. I asked this same question on there and while it seems most had theirs done at the same time, some were told they had to wait X number of weeks/months to get the revision. It depends on the surgeon and what condition(s) the band may have caused, if any. Good luck with your journey. -
Dr. Boe - Barix Clinic of Langhorne, PA
Frenchie1959 replied to Jeni's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi FNJ: What did you think after the consultation? Which doctor did you see? My approval process was uneventful. I didn't have to do a diet. My BMI is over 40. I have arthritis in both knees which has required both knees to be replaced and the right knee replacement to be revised. I also have high cholesteral. I believe I went to the consultation in October. The delay between the consultation and my surgery date was caused by the time it took me to process the bandster rules and decide if I was prepared to follow them. It took me about five months to work through my issues and feel committed to the new life style. Once I did that, I had the psych evaluation and the very next week the Clinic called me to schedule the surgery. I had my first fill on June 3rd. So far everything is good. Let us know how things are going with you. -
I'm a little late to this post, but I haven't been on the site in quite some time. My cousin had the issue you are concerned with.......her intestines wrapped and got tangled. She was very sick for a long time, but once they discovered it and she had surgery to repair, she was fine. Thanks for replying! What kind of symptoms did she have? Is she doing well now? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I haven't talked to her in a few years. She lives far from me and is actually a cousin through marriage. Anyway.....as I recall, she was very sick, but I don't remember the specifics. But I DO remember that it ended up being the very issue you're concerned about. There is a lot to consider when choosing WLS. I'm agonizing over it myself, because I'm considering a band/plication revision to bypass. I don't know if I will go through with it, but I'm reaching out to everyone I know, including coming back on this site, to get all the info I can. I'm 61 and don't know if putting myself through it is a good choice. Then again, blowing up again and having all the weight related health issues isn't a great thing either!

Revision Or Not? Need Advice!
Nicole Sikes posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was banded in March 2011. The day after surgery I started having esophageal spasms. I had to go and have all of my primer fluid removed. After 4 weeks and several medications, it seemed to have stopped. So I go and have my first few fills and all is well. After the fourth fill I started having trouble with certain foods which was to be expected. But, one day I could eat something and the next time I would throw it back up. This was very confusing because I wouldn't know if I could eat something or not until I tried. After another fill I started throwing up more often so I had some of the fluid taken out. Naturally I wasn't losing weight which was frustrating! After this point they said my tissues were very sensitive and that we would have to go with smaller fills. So 0.2 ml is what I have been getting from then on which is next to nothing. But I would still swell to the point of not being able to eat solids for a week after a fill. Long story short, I have gone so many days not able to eat solid foods and sometimes not even liquids! I've thrown up more days than not. I have starved off every one of the 70 lbs I'm down. I had actually gotten down 80 lbs. but at the end of May I had 0.5 ml removed because I needed a break from the vomiting and just wanted to eat! So I gained 10 lbs! At this point my band is only half full. Anyhow, I had a consult with my surgeon and where I though food was getting stuck in my band, it's actually getting stuck in my esophagus. I'm still having esophageal spasms and the food never makes it to the pouch! The band has not even had a chance to work because I can't get it tight enough to get restriction. My esophagus is boycotting the band! He basically says my body is not tolerating the band (duh) and that my options are to keep the band and hope it gets better (after a year and a half), have it removed (and gain all my weight back and then some) or get the sleeve (which could still piss off my esophagus). My fear is that I will have the same issues with the sleeve and it's not reversible. Atleast right now I feel like I have a choice to be miserable for the rest of my life or not. Once the stomach is gone, it's gone. I'm so torn!!! Any input would be awesome. Espeacially if anyone has had the same band issues and then had the revision done. I just don't want to make the wrong decision. HELP?! -
Possible sleeve to bypass revision
James Marusek replied to peacefullillypad's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am sorry to hear about your difficulties. Generally sleeve surgery is not recommended for GERD patients because the sleeve will only make that condition worse. RNY gastric bypass is the recommended procedure. I had RNY surgery about 5 years ago and one of the reasons why I went that route was because I had severe acid reflux (GERD). There are several past and present members on this board who had revisions from sleeve to RNY gastric bypass because of GERD. And they seemed to report that the revision worked for them. Perhaps some of them will speak up. But before you go forward, you might want to consider the following: According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. You would want to rule out the possibility of a Helicobacter pylori infection. This is common bacterial infection but generally it is a hidden infection. About 2/3 of the people in the world have it. And this condition if you have it needs to be treated, so make sure you were tested for it, because it might be the root cause of your problems. -
Just HOW many pills do we have to take?
pear425 replied to meyouus's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My answer to your question is completely different then the others. First I should say I had RNY in 2005 and did fine until 2009 when I started to regain weight. I am now having revision surgery. I work very closely with my nut who specializes in bariatric nutrition and has a focus on Vitamin deficiency. She has taught me that in the last few years research has proven that the Vitamins that we all think of like Centrum, Citracal etc... are not effective for us because we do not absorb them at all, hence we don't get the benefit from them. This makes very good sense since the reason we lose weight in addition to pouch is because of the malabsorption of calories, fats etc... If we don't absorb food nutrients we aren't going to absorb the vitamins. Check out the company Bariatric Advantage. They are the leaders. I understand you are very concerned about the cost and these vitamins are not cheap and you must take vitamins for the rest of your life (the doctors aren't just saying that!) Before meeting my current nut I was taking centrum, citracal, Iron complete from GNC, and sublingal b-12. After getting my blood work it was revealed I have some severe vitamin deficiencies Especially Vit D which has caused some damage that can't be reversed. I don't mean to sound scary or anything. This is just my personal experience and as I have learned throughout the years is that every surgeon has different standards/practices and requirements for their patients. I always believe in following the directions given by your own doctor but please research what they are saying and asked about bariatric specific vitamins. -

My email is aka_et@me.com You can find me on Instagram and or Facebook. However I do not discuss anything about my weight loss surgery on either media account. I don't care to do so. Help me Friends! Sleeve vs MGB! How did you decide?!
CR0610 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Please help my surgery is Monday and I am still unsure which procedure is better for me. I have a failed lapband, BMI of 33.2, CW 189. I read the forums how sleeve patients usually regain after years and go back for revision. However is MGB to invasive for my weight loss. I don’t want to lose to much. Please help me decide. More heads and opinions are better than one :) -
I had my revision on June 1 so I'm 2 weeks out. I am totally happy so far. With the band I was throwing up all the foods I was supposed to eat and was eating anything that would stay down so I was gaining. After 3 months of trying to get the band adjusted my surgeon and I made the decision to switch. I've lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks. So far I have had zero instances of throwing up or nausea or anything and I have been able to tolerate a lot of foods. I haven't found anything that is bothering me yet. My surgeon used the same incisions as the band so I don't have new incisions. He took the band out and did the sleeve in the same surgery. I was in the hospital for two days and then home. No complications at this point.

From Sleeve to Bypass - Revision

I would take a good look at what your eating ect.. I am a slacker In the exercise department (that will change next week finally!) I still lost 60 lbs In 4 months even w/o any exercise. I do track everything that goes in my mouth though and I'm extremely caution of what I eat. Maybe you do need a revision...better discuss that with your DR! -

Anyone torn between Gastric Bypass and LB
mishakal replied to Jodi73's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm young, I have no children. I'm going to go for the band if I go for WLS. If it doesn't work, if I have problems with it and it has to be removed, I can try to beg my insurance company to let me have it revised to an RNY -- that is, if the time with the band isn't sufficient for me to lose enough weight to be healthier. There is no going back from an RNY. I still would gladly go through the complications the people I have known with RNY have experienced than suffer the health consequences of morbid obesity, though.
