What time do you need to stop eating at night?
kll724 replied to AudreeS's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I can't eat after certain hours either. I can usually drink later than 8, but if I eat, it will cause coughing and some reflux of acid during the night. By the way, I have had 2 slips, and the lst one I had to have a revision to my band. I now have had to have a small amount removed, which took care of most reflux problems. Karen -

I came across some statistics. People that get the sleeve and didn't have GERD prior to surgery.. 9% will develop GERD because of the surgery. 16% of people that have acid going into surgery had it resolve! But, acid is a concern, and one of the reasons I'm considering getting a RYN bypass to begin with. Or I'll get the sleeve, and have a 9% chance of needing a revision. Band Gone A Year 1/2 Ago..Sleeve on the way. Anyone Else?
liannatx replied to ebonymc's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are many revision people here. I actually did great with my band while it was working, but once it slipped and I was never able to keep a fill in it I gradually gained back every pound... I knew that I needed some help to lose and keep off the weight. I find the Sleeve to be everything I wanted, and I think you will be very happy with your decision. Search the forums and you can probably find numerous threads on recovery and results after revision! Good luck! -
Band Gone A Year 1/2 Ago..Sleeve on the way. Anyone Else?
Evil Ziggy replied to ebonymc's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So update on the whole process: After speaking with the Doctor and her Medical assistants we decided to go ahead and submit the claim (they never had to deal with submitting paperwork for a revision; only brand new patients). According to my Ins. for revisions a claim only needs the documentation showing that the band malfunctioned and not because of the patient. So we went ahead and did that with out submitting all the goodies that is normally required like 8 week weight loss and 5 year history and psych eval and they DENIED IT! Which believe it or not is GOOD news because they came back and said they are not requiring the 5 year morbid obesity requirement because of the documentation for the emergency removal. Of course my doctor did have to go to bat for me. She had to have a peer-to-peer review to justify the medical necessity. Got the call from my doc yesterday stating all I need now to get my claim approved is 8 week commercially recognized weight lost program and pysch eval. I'm kinda stoked about it and in shock that I can forgo the 5 year proof. Just need to keep my fingers crossed and good vibes until I get the surgery. Side note: Determination and persistence pays off. This was really uncharted waters for my doctors office. Be proactive and call the ins company, get the medical coverage guidelines, basically do their job along side them. Something could go missed. In my case the girls at the office had the wrong medical coverage guideline. That made the difference in the type of surgery I was covered for. Do your homework and also follow up with the insurance company after a pre cert or claim is filed. -
Revision to sleeve with plication
cranberry posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I've had lap band with plication since 2012. Successful for the first 2 years losing 60 lbs. Then practically overnight started terrible acid reflux, heartburn and vomiting. Living on Prilosec. I'm going in for a revision to a sleeve in a few weeks hoping to reduce/eliminate the pain but my Dr is very concerned about the plication. He's never done a revision with one before and isn't sure if he can. Won't know till he gets in there. Another Dr flat out refused to try. Anyone else had a sleeve revision from plication? How was it? -
Not to be too graphic, but I just found out I need a port revision. My port flipped...and I think it was a wild night that may have flipped it!! Maybe not, but that's the only time I have been aware of "feeling" my port since I had the surgery. So if something feels uncomfortable, stop and try something different!!

Thanks, all! Positive words and vibes are deeply appreciated. I weighed myself on Friday night and I was 383 - Saturday and Sunday I said goodbye to pints of beer and terrible food. I started my liquid diet 2 days early (my fiancee is having revision - band to sleeve - surgery a week before my sleeve, so I wanted to be supportive earlier ha!) on Monday and I'm down about 9.5 pounds already. So, seeing that kind of progress and knowing that it'll be easier in some respects when I'm not AS hungry really helps, too.

revision - band to sleeve - how are you doing?
IDONTWANTTOGROWUP posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey everyone, I had gastric sleeve revision surgery over 6 months ago and I have lost almost 40 pounds. I still have 20 to lose to get to goal, although I am happy to finally being able to squeeze into most of my skinny clothes. As you know, revision surgery patients lose at a slower pace, but I wanted to see how I was doing compared to other revisioners! Please tell me your stats!! -
Hello and congratulations on your upcoming revision! I had my revision on 6/25 and so far so good! I have lost 7 pounds since surgery and that feels amazing! After my band surgery I lost 34 pounds in 7 months before my band failed. Also in my liquid phase post op I did not loose anything at all after band surgery ( still stumped) lol I wish you all the best and I know in my heart that this WILL work for me and I am sure it will work for you, so girl start making plans for the rest of your life

revision - band to sleeve - how are you doing?
S@ssen@ch replied to IDONTWANTTOGROWUP's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Not sure it's healthy to compare. Everyone is different. There are too many factors that come into play when we're talking about weight loss. Personally, I'm OK with the slow weight loss. Would I like it to be faster? Certainly, but I accept the consequences of the fact that I'm probably more relaxed with my diet plan than most. I feel great, my clothes fit better, I have more energy and ambition. I'm just all around in a better place, and isn't THAT what it's all about? Health and happiness? If you must compare: I had gastric sleeve revision surgery about a month after you. I've lost 40 lbs since surgery. Not to harp on the not comparing theme, but our experiences may be different. I didn't have a direct revision. I had my lap band out in 2009 and tried to go it alone. I was doing well maintaining until I had some major life events that had a devastating effect on my waistline. I also noticed that my starting weight was much higher than yours. -
Kinda Sorta Gotta Date! (I Think)
raquelrdgz replied to lessofme's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I agree with DLCoggin BUT I wouldn't tell everyone and anyone before surgery because 9/10 will be negative about it and will try to discourage you. I love how the thin ones want to tell me I can do it on my own and that all I have to do is watch what I eat and exercise! IF it were that easy there wouldn't be an obese person out there and this option wouldn't exist. I'm having revision surgery due to a failed lap band but only a hand full of people know and until I'm losing the weight and I am asked-I will not put it out there. I'll avoid the negativity as much as possible. (my two cents ) -
Revision from Sleeve to Bypass...
missmachine replied to missmachine's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Vicki, YES, let's definitely stay in touch and help each other along this journey. We seem to be starting out around the same BMI as well. I am glad you responded. I have not been able to find much info online for vsg to rny revisions and the success rate or anything. Why are you getting your revision, is it because of inadequate weight loss or because of a complication? I do have the acid reflux but more than anything I am hoping that this will help me lose the other 1/2 of my fat. I was worried that since I already had a surgery that this wouldn't be much different for weight loss. I don't know. I will PM you my email. -
I had complications with my revision. I will have to say that my situation is not common, and my stomach had numerous adhesions and was damaged by the band. Here's links to my story: http://verticalsleevetalk.com/tell-your-story/32-not-looking-back.html http://verticalsleevetalk.com/band-sleeve-revisions/290-home-recovering.html http://verticalsleevetalk.com/post-operation-vertical-sleeve-gastric-surgery-vsg-questions-answers/861-little-update.html There's a couple of replies in each thread detailing my entire ordeal. I was also hospitalized in mid-July due to Fluid pockets that were found in my abdominal cavity. I was hospitalized, drains placed, and rehydrated for 1 week. They concluded that the fluid pockets developed after the leak repair surgery, and some bacteria stayed in my body. I had the drains in for 3 weeks, and was just released for full activity on August 24th. My biggest hurdle that I'm struggling with right now is eating. Nothing sounds appetizing, nothing tastes really good when I do eat, and of course, my arch nemesis of Protein powders/drinks. My surgeon wants me to eat 4 small meals a day consisting of at least 15grams of protein. Problem is eggs, and cheese, deli meat disgusts me now (I ate a lot of it in the beginning) are not working for me right now. I am lucky if I eat twice daily, and I'm not getting anywhere close to 60 grams of protein per day. I just recently ordered new samples, and I have only tried 1, it didn't settle well with me at all. I have another one in the fridge chilling as I type. Hopefully, I can find something that works, I'm finding more hair in the bottom of the tub.

Demographics - Opinions - Weighing Options (no pun intended)
Berry78 replied to P-Diddy's topic in The Guys’ Room
I have a theory that I want to share. When I was in college, I ate at the all-you-can-eat buffet style cafeteria. I lost weight. Being confronted with so many choices, I naturally gravitated to eating pretty much the exact same meal for breakfast every day, and dinner was essentially the same each night as well. I found comfort in a consistent meal routine. Getting married, having children, fixing dinner that kids would eat, having leftovers, not wanting to waste food.. all these things really played a part in my gaining 150lbs after leaving college. During the preop and post op diets, I had to completely separate my eating from that of the family. I actually found it extremely easy with our set-up, and so it is now 2nd nature. I eat the same things every day, and it is comforting to me (not boring). I always know what I'm going to have, so that stress of "what's for dinner" doesn't apply to me anymore. Granted, I'm only 3.5 months out of surgery, so we'll see how I feel in a couple more years. My theory is that people that don't mind a limited palette of foods do exceptionally well (mentally) after surgery. Those people that always want something different all the time.. they are going to have a harder time. There are a ton of ways to make salads, but ultimately, it's still salad. How does all this play in for you? Are you someone that would say "But we had chili last night!" or "Do we ALWAYS have to have spaghetti Mondays?!".. you would probably do better with a bypass. But if you're more like me (and have no history of GERD), then the sleeve would probably work well for you. Men lose about twice as fast as women in general. I think the ultimate success is up to your individual body and mind, and less about the procedure you choose. Another thing to think about is your willingness to undergo a second, revisional surgery. Sleeves leave this as a possibility, whereas a bypass is "one and done". A revision doesn't have the dramatic success of an initial surgery, but sometimes is needed if the weight loss stops too soon, or you develop severe GERD. -
Stupid BMI requirements/Food funerals!
FutureSylph replied to lizonaplane's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could have intentionally bad posture that day. If you don't stand up too straight when your height is measured, it will revise your BMI upward. <innocent whistling> -
I noticed that my post a year ago was the last one in the March 2007 bandsters, so maybe no one is still here. I'd love to hear how everyone is doing, though, so I'm trying again. I had a revision from band to bypass on December 10, 2012. So far, so good. I've lost 50 lbs since then. I've always been a slow loser, even with the band and everything else I've tried (which, with my age, adds to a very slow metabolism). So I'm not setting any weight loss records, but I'm pleased with the results so far and I feel better than I have for many years. Check in if you are so inclined! It would be wonderful to hear how everyone is doing. Thanks for your support, especially in the beginning of the band journey.

First appointment Tomorrow to start my journey - HELP
James Marusek replied to PinkiePie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is common to feel apprehension or fear prior to any surgery. There are several different forms of surgery, so you may want to ask about each type. Also many of us have health issues. These can lead to defining the best type of surgery appropriate for our particular issues. I had GERD and RNY gastric bypass is better for this condition than the sleeve because the sleeve will only make this condition worse. You might want to discuss the rate of revision for each type of surgery. If I was going under the knife for this surgery, I did not want to repeat the experience. -
A quick background - I had a lapband slip diagnosed in June. EGD confirmation in July. Band removed in September. And last week my insurance denied my revision to a sleeve. I have a background in the insurance industry so I'm not completely at a loss, but... My surgeon had a wonderful lady who knew the revision process inside and out, who quit just a few weeks ago. Their new lady is, well... new... and I'm her first revision case. Uh oh. So I'm kind of having to be my own advocate, because she just doesn't know. The reasons for my denial were: Failure to submit proof of a mechanical failure Failure to document proof of adherence to the prescribed diet and exercise requirements. The revision is covered, otherwise. I don't have to worry about exclusions. But I need to figure out how to prove those two points. Mechanical failure - my insurance company (Cigna) does include a slip in their definition of mechanical failure, and both my x-ray and EGD report were provided. Does anyone have any other ideas how we can document or prove mechanical failure other than those two things? I'm not sure what else I can give them, unless I have the surgeon himself write a letter confirming it. First, lap-band doesn't have a prescribed diet. It's a restrictive procedure. I'm not sure I can prove compliance with a prescribed diet when there really isn't one. I have no way to document portion enforcement. The best I can think of is to gather medical records from doctor's visits (other than my surgeon's office), that demonstrate a steady loss or maintenance until when I had my daughter (I gained in my last trimester, then lost all but about 10, then gained about 20 - right around the time I started showing symptoms of what ended up being a slip). But even with a slipped band/lack of major restriction, I maintained for about 2 years. My surgeon's office wasn't sure these records would do the trick. I know I have OB records that will weigh me in at least 150 lbs down from when I first had the lapband put in. Anyone experienced denial on these same two provisions? Would you mind sharing what types of information & documentation you provided? Thanks all... I'm an instant gratification kind of girl, and this blows.

16k is awesome! I am in Atlanta and it will be nearly 22k for the removal of the band and revision (all one surgery) including 2 nights in the hospital.
-
I understand that you want a very specific answer, but unfortunately, there isn't one. I was never told specifically what caused my slip, though I believe it was a combination of being too tight, PBing too often and overeating. It may have even been my original band placement because since my revision surgery I feel completely different. I think I have had 2 PBs in 4 months and opposed to 2 per week before the revision. I still have trouble tolerating fills and will be going back soon to try .5cc. The best advice is to follow the band rules. Measure your food to prevent overeating, eat slowly, chew thoroughly and keep in close contact with your doctor. Everyone's body is very different as well as different doctor recommendations, so there is no one answer.
-
I have never experienced a slip but have asked my surgeons office about them. It requires a complete unfill. Most often the band will go back into place all on it's own once it is unfilled and you have no restriction for a little while (6 weeks) I believe that time is liquids only but not sure. Sometimes it doesn't go back and then it would require a surgical revision. The better "seated" the band is from your initial healing phase and the closer you follow doctors orders with the unfill diet the better your odds at not needing another surgery.

I had reflux before my sleeve in 2013, was stable on Prevacid at the time. Seemed to do fine until about a yr ago. Now my GI doc has me on 3 different reflux meds. I went back to my Bariatric surgeon and he’s doing to do a revision to RNY. My reflux has cause severe damage to my esophagus because the lower end is weak and the valve doesn’t close to keep the acid in my stomach. I have made all the dietary changes and sleep elevated- still have symptoms daily.

Mine was supposed to be 2. I had a revision from band to bypass. I had a minor complication and stayed 4 nights. Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App

Anyone Had Scar Revision Surgery Or Know The Cpt Code For It?
Kiki Von Moonshine posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have some scars I want fixed (didnt even know it was possible) and I want to call to see if my insurance would cover it which I doubt, but still want to find out.
