Sleeve vs Bypass
catwoman7 replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the other poster that if you look at statistics, bypass patients tend to lose more, but not by a lot. And this all really comes down to the individual. You'll find people who've been wildly successful at both, and people who have failed at both....and people in the middle, too (those who've lost a bunch of weight, yet not made it all the way to their goal). Success is really more a factor of the person's commitment to their program rather than which surgery they get. -
Sleeve vs Bypass
WishMeSmaller replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Weight loss averages are slightly higher with bypass, but not by a huge amount, and results for both surgeries are dependent on what the individual does with the tool. I had bypass due to GERD, and have been very happy with my recovery and results. Good luck! 😊 -
Sleeve vs Bypass
Hopefulin2021 replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone this really helps! Don you lose more weight with bypass or is it the same? -
I also went to the doctor anticipating the sleeve, but he suggested the bypass. He was really good about explaining the whys. He asked what my concerns were about the bypass, and I mentioned that I thought it was more invasive. He said that it's a more technically complicated surgery than the sleeve for the doctor, but on the patient side of it, the pre/post op are pretty much the same. When it wasn't done laparoscopically, I'm sure it was much more invasive, but now it's pretty much the same as the sleeve. I've decided to take his advice and go with the sleeve. Also, my insurance made it very clear this one a one time surgery, and I've seen so many people with revisions that I'm just going straight to bypass.

I love my bypass, and you will love yours too! Best of luck to you and I'm glad they discovered the benign tumor before it did any damage!!
-
I've heard the bypass is more invasive but I don't understand why since the sleeve is basically cutting off 3/4 of your stomach, which is pretty damned invasive! 😀 I guess the bypass is more complicated. I'm happy with my sleeve.

Wow I am happy to hear that! Did you have the sleeve or bypass? -
Hi when I initially started this journey I was set up for a sleeve. After undergoing two endoscopies it was found that I have a small benign tumor in the lining of my stomach which will have to be removed during surgery but now I have to have a bypass. I am still going through with it but I am a little more nervous because bypass is more invasive or maybe it isn’t, any ideas about this ?

for me it wasn't my first intestine surgery so its just assumed i had another and will always eat funny. I did hear one woman say she just had her gallbladder taken out as an excuse for post op eating after bypass -
Stomach pain when eating?
tarotcardreader replied to Aray611's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Let your bariatric nurse/med team know can be complications. For me I get that nausea thing. It helps me if i preportion the amount (you can use a scale or little cups marked 1-2oz on amazon). It's less nausea if I eat under that amount. But I then need 4 meals a day to get the protein grams which cuts into water consumption. However, there are some foods that cause a complete hurlfest in any measure. My surgeon said that it can be this way if you have a very sensitive stomach. Basically its like mini food intolerances, alot of them. She set me up an appointment with the dietician again so we can go over my foods and see if we can eliminate common culprits of stomach upset post bypass. See what your surgeon has to say about it they might have helpful suggestions. -
Gerd w/ Sleeve VS. Dumping w/ Bypass
ichabodny replied to AJSassyPants's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Going with both responses above with an emphatic agree! I was scared beyond belief with any of the surgeries but never even considered sleeve with my surgeon as soon as he said it had even a little chance of gerd worsening. I was stage 3 and having my esophagus widened every year with swallowing problems-with a real fear of Barret's Syndrome for real. I had tight fists of air in my chest that didn't hurt but were so scary and disturbing with a lot of breathing problems. My surgery had some complications but minor in the long run. I am 15 weeks out now and down 100 lbs as of today! Not gonna lie-my GERD is not completely gone but my Dr said with the severity I was at, it can take a good 6 months for it to be so much better. He still has me taking meds for that but it is much better and more so day by day. Dumping syndrome is not fun but I also feel it's a benefit to learning how to eat differently for long term weight loss and control. I really feel like a new person and am ok with what I need to do and the after-effects of the bypass. It's not an easy recovery but not as bad as I thought it would be either; I still have some bruising as the complications made it more difficult the first month. Even with that, I am, without even a tiny shred of doubt. so happy I went with the bypass. Yeah, I wouldn't want to just 'gamble' with surgeries as a 'just in case'. Especially with GERD-it's a very serious thing to have. -
11/17 gastric bypass support buddies?
Klaresa16 replied to Aray611's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes! I had revision from VSG to Gastric Bypass on 12/8/2020 -
Hi I'd like to introduce myself I'm cyndeelouwho from Nebraska. I had bypass surgery during 1980 in the initial start up stage and not much was known about it. I was 220 or 230 and 5'1. In a years time I lost 120 lbs and I felt great. But not at first it wasn't fun at all. I really didn't know what to do but, I know most of the time I was sick and puking not to mention constipated. I'd say about three or four months out I started to understand what was happening to my body. I kept the weight off maintaining 115 weight. But after my marriage failed and then made bad choices in my life I gained it all back. Now I'm 69 years old and have a BMI of 36. If I don't do anything now my quality of life will only be bad. When I look at a mirror I see a hippo or a Rhino. I have to do something now. Has anyone out there heard of a person who has had a bypass surgery and their stomach stretched out and is thinking about having another, do they even do that? I'm sorry but I can't talk to anyone else please let me know what you think.

Low energy and Out of Breath
cocosexy99 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am cassey new here. I had a revision Sleeve to GB. My Sleeve was in 2010 and my GB was 11/30/2020. I am out of breath alot and went to get checked out in ER today. They said I have no clots and I am happy about that. I cant eat or drink much and so I am not getting all the fluids needed. I really hope this gets better. I am not sure if the fact I lost 19 pounds since surgery has anything to do with my symptoms. I just need some support and need to know that I will feel better soon. And I have experienced dumping I think and that is no fun either, and that sometimes makes me not want to drink or eat.- 1 reply

Sleeve to Bypass & hungry?
cocosexy99 replied to Christina760's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi everyone so my revision from sleeve to GB took place on 11/30/2020. I had my sleeve in 2010. I feel hungry all the time, and feel like there is nothing I can eat. I am on the mushy food stage, I can have tuna, soup, applesauce, warm cereal etc. But I am so week and out of breath, and actually went today to ER to make sure I did not have any blood clots I am all clear thank God. I am also having time getting all my fluids, and maybe the weakness is from the weight loss. I lost 19 pound since surgery on 11/30. And from reading other posts it seem like alot. I just want to get my energy back. -
How long before I can enjoy a meal again?
sunshinedarlene1112@gmail.com replied to LAJ23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same thing happen. Sleeve Surgery in 2016. 6 weeks out I started having those same issue. Now I’m about to have a revision to bypass because Gerd is a side effect of the sleeve. I’m having to go back through the whole process again... -
I am just going to have my consultation on 1/4/21. I had gastric bypass surgery in 1980 when I was 30 years old. I had tremendous success and lost 130 lbs in about a year. I kept it off for about 12 years but gained it all back. I have a 36 bmi and I'm 69. I can't live like this anymore, health wise and mentally. I have low or negative self worth. To me when I look at myself I see a hippo or rhino. Gross, hey yea I think so too. My staples are still on my stomach that's really stretched out did anyone else have bariactic surgery and then have it again? Please advise me as I was going to ask the doctor about that. Gerd w/ Sleeve VS. Dumping w/ Bypass
AZhiker replied to AJSassyPants's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
GERD is serious. It can lead to cancerous changes in the tissues. I chose bypass because of my GERD and have not regretted it a bit. There might be a little malabsorption going on, mostly fat, but I don't think it is much. Most malabsorption starts resolving on its own as the jejunum takes on a more absorptive role. Another reason I chose bypass was BECAUSE of dumping. I wanted to have as strong of a deterrent possible to sweets. However, almost 2 years out and I have never dumped, even with sweets. From what I've read, the majority of bypass patients do NOT dump. IMHO, if you have GERD, go with bypass. I actually had Barretts esophagus from the GERD, along with a nice little, precancerous Barrett's polyp which was removed pre-op. Since surgery, the Barretts has completely resolved, which I think is pretty amazing. I'd take the risk of dumping anyday over the increased risk of cancer from unresolved GERD. I would not want to undergo a second surgery, either. -
Gerd w/ Sleeve VS. Dumping w/ Bypass
AJSassyPants posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have GERD. One surgeon suggested bypass as GERD can worsen due to increased stomach pressure with the sleeve. But, while bypass often cures GERD and often results in greater weight loss, there is major concern regarding mal-absorption and health issues with Bypass, including the pain of DUMPING SYNDROME, Can anyone speak to acid reflux and the struggle to choose between the two surgeries? The second opinion surgeon suggested I do the sleeve and can always move to bypass if acid reflux worsens....but that's another surgery...UGH. I'm nervous and confused as there are drawbacks to both options. Is gerd worse than the pain of dumping? Anyone suffer from this issue?- 4 replies

Anyone's A1C (blood sugar average) raise AFTER Bypass??
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to MaybeMeow2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven’t had an a1c since August the week before my revision but when I had my revision surgery I was on 4hr blood sugar checks in the hospital because my post op level sugar level was over 200! It was confusing because I’m not diabetic and all of my a1c draws have been within normal limits. -
No hunger, difficulty eating and drinking
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to jc-17's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I agree with talking to your mom about how you feel. It can be frustrating when you feel alone. I’m a year post VSG today and 4months post VSG to RNY revision and there are days where the struggle with texture are very real. I just do the best I can. I rely pretty heavily on protein soups, protein bars, and shakes as animal protein doesn’t sit well most of the time. Sometimes I’ll go the plant based protein route with things like impossible burgers or tofu. Hope you find something that works for you. -

Anyone's A1C (blood sugar average) raise AFTER Bypass??
MaybeMeow2 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not diabetic and did not have high blood sugar before Bypass. Oddly, my A1C has risen consistently at each post op lab visit. It's now 5.6 which I'm told is "close" to pre-diabetic. I am, without a doubt, eating less sugar and carb than I did pre Bypass and as I mentioned did not have issues (that I'm aware of) before. Anyone else note their A1C raise when studying their bloodwork?
