Body dysmorhia is a bitthhhsssss
Darktowerdream replied to whitmac's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I struggled with my weight so much of my life that I wasn't a healthy weight for my height since I was probably 9 or 10 which is kind of when thing should went south anyway. I was sick from when I was a baby but things changed then. Of course hitting puberty didn't help. I got bullied growing up including my sister. And things I don't discuss on public forums. But I will say body dismorphia is a tough one. Especially when you never knew where you fit and never really did fit in anywhere. Or never perceived myself as anything but the fat kid. Or ugly kid. Never saw myself as feminine either. Ive worn clothes I hadn't like dresses. I tried on a bathing suit, but not in public yet. Every moment it's still a struggle of seeing the fat kid, feeling like the fat kid and being afraid to be that again. So getting comments about my weight even someone saying the word skinny it sets something off. I have no pictures but one from my birthday right before my gastric bypass surgery April last year. That's how much I hated pictures. My mom had to beg me to take a picture recently ... i took a picture of myself in the swimsuit to convince myself I could wear it but it felt weird. Like sharing the pictures I shared here. It's hard to not fear our efforts will be lost. And it's a continuous journey. Though my road is complicated by many things. We try to prop each other up the best we can. -

Yes!!! Hiccups here too!! It freaks me out! I asked another girl I know that had bypass and she said the first couple weeks she did a lot of burping and hiccuping. That made me feel better about it. 🥴 -
Hello, I’m nearly six months post RNY. I’ve had a rough road because my surgeon nicked my spleen during bypass so I’ve been better. Everything I eat makes me sick. I eat clean, slow, and small portions. I’m quite depressed because I do want to eat. Protein shakes don’t make me sick, but doc said if I don’t eat solids he will put me on feeding tube. Reversal of bypass not possible since 80 % removed due to mass and small tumors. Has anyone else experienced nausea after eating for this long?

Hi! im three days post op and the protein water I liked before surgery makes me want to throw up now. I don’t know what it is but I feel like it tastes weird? Are my taste buds changing? I’ve been drinking other protein shakes but they’re not the same “level” according to my nutritionist as the protein water with the whey protein isolate which Im worried could screw up my progress. But at the same time I cannot drink the protein water so I just don’t know! I could only get up to 50g protein yesterday. I’m also exhausted and still feel a lot of pain. I have been napping every day. Is this normal? Am I supposed to have more energy? I went out to the store with my family yesterday thinking I needed to push myself but maybe I pushed too hard? I don’t know. any advice or first hand experiences you have for the first week post op is greatly appreciated!

I don't have a bypass, but your question does warrant some clarification...do you mean immediately after surgery or do you mean after eating something? If after eating...what stage are you at and what volume of food and type of food are you eating?

Lots of problems no answers, 10 years out
MaybeMeow2 replied to AbbyRae1417's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I can recall a friend years ago describing this very similar story after regaining their weight years after bypass. IF I recall she lost 110 pounds. Then gained back nearly 100 after having her 2 children about 7 years later. And she felt full and had chest pain and easily winded. I wish I recalled more but I do know she went on Weight watchers and lost about 70 pounds and the feeling resolved. I know this is not an answer but I share so it might give you some hope. Perhaps if you lose the regained weight the symptoms will go away. Best of luck. So sorry to hear about the regains after all that hard work. -
Regular Foods after Bypass- Pizza, Sugar, Bread..Tell me

6 months post Bypass here and I remember asking this question before surgery. I had what my surgeon calls a "short" bypass. Around 100 cm bypassed when 150 is the norm and I'm told 200 is typical on larger men. Anyway, my surgeon said "less bowel bypassed less chance of dumping and mal nutrition but also slower weight loss." I was ok with that. I didn't want to dump. Some people appreciate it because it helps them cure their sugar/carb addiction. But I wanted to be able to still have those things. Which really isn't the best frame of mind before WLS. I can have a few bites of a sugary dessert. Anything more and I feel nauseated. It's intense. But I've never thrown up. Nausea lasts about 30 miserable minutes. Then passes. Problem with this is it doesn't help you overcome your addiction. And the nausea is a reminder that you don't seem to have control over your desire for carbs even tho it makes you feel sick. Anyway... you might ask your surgeon about their thoughts on Bypass length. I think it's interesting it isn't addressed more on this site and many people have no idea now much of their bowel had been bypassed. -
My twin brother and I have just gotten our surgery date for Gastric Bypass surgery. We are scheduled for 1/28/20. We will go in together on the same day with the same surgeon. We are excited to go through the process together. It will be nice to have each other as a support system but still a little nervous about what to expect the first few weeks after surgery. So happy to have found this app. Does anyone have any pointers? Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

Thanks! I lost 15 pounds on the two week liquid pre-op diet. I actually lost about 15-18 pounds each month for the first four months. My weight loss started to slow month 4-5 and has been very slow the last couple of weeks. I think it is normal for weight loss to slow as we get close to goal, but I’m not going to lie...it is annoying. My immediate goal is 164, which will be a normal BMI, and 100 pounds lost. So close! BTW, I chose bypass due to pre-existing GERD. Good luck to you! -
Hello I was wondering if anyone had dealt with a hernia after their surgery? I had my gastric bypass on 7/15 and i had an additional surgery 9 weeks later - my gallbladder had to come out. My surgeon opened two of my incisions twice - my belly button incision and my right incision. I have a very physical job, and i went back to work after my gallbladder surgery 2 weeks later. I am constantly lifting almost 25 lbs, and pushing/pulling over 200 lbs a lot. My right side near my belly button has been tender off and on. I have recently noticed that my right side swells up a little (its not hard, its still really soft but i do have a lot of loose skin, as I have lost 107 lbs.) I do feel a lump/or bulge near this area, and it almost feels like a knot i guess you can say when you press into it? I've had pressure only on my right side lately, as work has been a lot more busier. I've dealt with the chronic constipation since surgery too but I think i finally got it under control for once! I just feel like I am getting the run around at the office, and I have not discussed it with my surgeon just yet. They tell me the pain can take 6 months to a year to go away, and bulges are normal. Why is it just now more noticeable? Has anyone else dealt with this or is it just me? What does scar tissue feel like?

Stall, hair loss and other changes (warning, TMI)
Lilfootie replied to LAJ23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my support group last week, they said bypass patients should never have collagen protein, because it inhibits absorption of some nutrients (can’t remember which ones). I was surprised, and I can’t find any article anywhere to back this up, but maybe ditch it for a while, or take it 1-2 hrs after eating instead of with food or other vitamins. I have been stuck in the 180s for a while too. I am in a stall most of the time haha. I lose for about 1.5 weeks each month and then stall for the rest. -
diagnosed with COVID before upcoming surgery
Clams82 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey guys just venting. I have been approved for a revision to gastric bypass from VSG due to severe GERD and just found out I have COVID. I'm super disappointed. There will be three weeks in between from when I tested positive to my surgery date and I've researched that people can continue to test positive even though they are no longer infectious. I'm sure my doctor's office will reschedule I'm just sad this happened. Not much I can do about it now. COVID sucks. -

I have the minor form of Thalassemia which is a type of anemia where I don’t absorb iron well. All of my blood counts are perpetually low all the time. After I had my first child, my OB said that normally they’d give a blood transfusion to someone with my numbers, but not me because that was just where my numbers lived! I’m just wondering if anyone else has it and if you had any complications from surgery - especially bypass? I’ve never seen a hematologist because it doesn’t really affect me, but wondering if I should try and get in before I do surgery.

Regular Foods after Bypass- Pizza, Sugar, Bread..Tell me
Mr Alley Gator replied to AJSassyPants's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Did not do the bypass but was sleeved. I can eat anything I want. No problem with a cookie, drink, Pizza etc. However Slow and Low is my plan - Two x mas cookies and I am done for a hour or so, Overload the sugar and it passes right thru. For example in the past could eat the King Cut about a 3/4 lb of prime rib, yesterday about the size of a playing card. Past 15 Shrimp Now 3 .... So times have changed for sure but someone posted it here a long time ago Its about Quaility of food ............. Not quantitiy! -
I have NOT had my bypass yet, but while my dietitian said there is no proof that vitamin patches work, the surgeon suggested them as an option... so while they had conflicting viewpoints- it might be worth looking into so you're not downing so much everyday. Blood work would tell you soon enough if the patches work for you. Also- IV vitamins from time to time from a health boutique might be worth looking into though it's $$$.

Regular Foods after Bypass- Pizza, Sugar, Bread..Tell me

For those of your who have had RNY Bypass... who here experiences dumping syndrome and who has been lucky enough to avoid it? Months or years out, who can enjoy a regular sandwich with cheese and mayo, pizza, ice cream, cookies, charcuterie plate, sweet cocktail (all in moderation) and who here suffers anytime they don't adhere to a strict post-op clean diet? How much could you eat before compared to what you can eat now. Do you feel "normal" at some point after surgery, or is there always an odd feeling as you go about your day and when you eat once you have surgery? I want your deets - the victories and the miseries! -
I've never dumped, and no absorption issues. With the exception of iron (some people can't absorb oral iron and have to have occasional infusions - but the vast majority of us do fine on oral iron). anyway, besides the iron, absorption issues are pretty uncommon as long as you keep on top of your vitamins. as for eating, I can eat anything now except for really fatty meals. For example, before surgery, I used to love to go out for Friday night fish fries. These would consist of two or three pieces of breaded, deep-fried fish, French fries, cole slaw with mayo, and a roll with butter. No way could I eat that much fat now. I could maybe have half a fried fish filet. Anything I had with that would have to have little to no fat. Other than that, I have no restrictions - I can eat everything I ate before, just in smaller quantities. As an example of that, before surgery, my husband and I would get a large pizza and each eat half of it. Now I can only eat one or two pieces. I physically cannot eat any more than that at one sitting. But...that's fine. That's about what most of my never-been-obese women friends eat, so... as far as "finality" - a couple of thoughts. RNY is technically reversible, although it's a complicated surgery and is only done if you have a serious medical issue that cannot be resolved another way. Sleeve is not reversible. The other part of your stomach is gone forever. As for revisions, the most straightforward one for sleeve is DS, since at one time the sleeve was the first phase of the DS back when they did the DS in two stages (they discovered a lot of people were able to lose their weight just with stage one, so they started offering that as a standalone surgery a few years back, and it pretty much replaced the lapband back when that went out of vogue). They also do VSG to RNY revisions, but that's mostly when there's an unresolvable GERD issue. RNY usually improves - if not outright cures - GERD (not always - but usually). RNY can be converted to DS, but that's a complicated surgery that only a handful of surgeons do. To do that, they have to reverse the RNY, then do the sleeve, then do the intestinal bypass (stage 2) part of the DS. Although to be honest, most people with RNY don't get revisions. We do see some revisions from VSG to RNY because of GERD, though.

Have you had any issues with your bypass? I'm very concerned about the finality of it. at least with the sleeve, you have the option to move to bypass. Have you experienced Mal-apsorbtion issues or dumping? Since you' underwent the procedure several years back, can you enjoy a wide variety of foods/quantity and do you feel "back to normal" without discomfort? Will I ever have a slice of pizza again?
-
that's the reason I went with bypass. Too many stories about people getting GERD with the sleeve - or people with existing GERD having it get worse. And a few of them ended up revising to bypass. it doesn't happen to everyone. I think I remember reading that it happens to about 30%. But I was not willing to take the risk of ending up one of those 30%. Some people are - and many of them turn out lucky. It's kind of a crap shoot..
