  1. My Bariatric Life

My Bariatric Life before weight loss and plastic surgeries

My Bariatric Life had gastric bypass surgery in July 2003. At that point in her life, she weighed 285 pounds, wore a size 24W, and was on ~10 prescription medications for obesity-related illnesses including diabetes and hypertension. Today My Bariatric Life has a BMI of 23 and wears a size 2 or 4. She is free from hypertension and diabetes and off 9 of 10 of those prescription medications. She owes her life to gastric bypass, plastic surgery, Paleo diet and exercise.
  2. I "lied" about having surgery for the first time yesterday. I put it in quotes because it was not technically a lie. A volunteer at work, whom I hadn't seen in months, saw me and commented on my weight loss. Then she said, "You didn't have that gastric bypass, did you?" Well, from how she asked, I could tell that she had a negative opinion of surgery, so I just said, "No" (because I didn't have bypass, I had the sleeve... see how sneaky I am?). And then she said, "Oh, thank god... that surgery scares me to death!" I feel bad because I missed an opportunity to educate someone on the facts of WLS, but I have only told a couple people at work and am trying to avoid the judgemental gossip that I know would happen. It may already be happening behind my back, but I'd rather keep it quiet. :(

Easy, LE, it's not your purpose in life to educate the masses about surgery. Now and then, when the occasion is conducive, fine. Otherwise, just do what makes sense for you at any given moment.

      LipstickLady

You didn't lie nor are you obligated to "educate" the ignorant. I've been "guilty" of this behavior a time or three and I feel no shame. It's MY body, MY health, and MY choice regarding who I share my decisions with.

Girl I don't blame you! sometimes it's a battle trying to explain the WLS to someone who has no idea about it b/c they've not done all the research on it! I know most the people at my work are tired of hearing about it. Oh well :) Good for you on your weight loss !

Thanks. My band was just never the same once I got pregnant. I go for a endoscopy with a biopsy Monday morning and when all the results are back then we can figure out what surgery to revise to and if I need to have 2 separate surgeries or just 1.

  6. Had surgery this am, hoped for bypass but couldn't be done. Got sleeve instead.

Sorry for your disappointment but you have a good tool now and you didn't have one before, so I am sure you will learn to get the most out of it. Good luck for a fast recovery.

  7. 5 days in my pre-op diet. Wednesday I will be having a conversion from the sleeve to bypass. I've had a rough go with acid reflux since the sleeve. I have to get my gallbladder removed also because I now have stones. When I started out on my journey I was 275lbs. Since the sleeve back in 2011 my lowest weight has been 223lbs and now I am at 239lbs. I still can't eat much of anything. Please keep me in your prayers as I go thru this one last time.

Hello!!! Here is my story. My heaviest weight was 375, I got the lapband in 2011. I lost a little over 100 pounds, Became Pregnant and gained 60 pounds. After a few years the lapband stopped working. I yo yo my weight and started having bad acid reflux to the point that I couldn’t sleep laying or sitting up. Last year in June 2017 I had my lapband removed, and started the program to get a revision. Didn’t get it then, on August 28th, 2018 I will be having my VSG surgery . Tomorrow August 13 I start my liquid diet

  14. Currently in the process of getting a revision to SADI-S.

  15. Less than a week before gastric bypass surgery. I'm nervous but excited. Been lurking here for a while, reading. I'm about ready as I'm going to get. Down 20 pounds in 3 months. A ton of pre op testing done and cleared. Food/drinks, chewable vitamins, protein, meds bought. On 2-week preop diet now which includes 2 protein shakes a day along with 3 ounces lean protein and 2 1/2 C.  non starchy veggies and is totally do able for me. Clear liquid day before surgery. A full sugar Gatorade night before  and again 2 hrs before arriving at the hospital. Interesting how different everyone's diets are depending on your doctor.

    I'm optimistic all will go well. Good luck to the April surgeries happening this month and to all that are going through the process.  {{hugs}}

      Debber

Hi Merill! I am Debber. I just joined this blog today. I am scheduled to have gastric bypass on April 27th, as well. As the date approaches, I've gotten a little anxious, but looking forward to it, too. Here's to a successful surgery and journey for us! :)

      Merill

      Hi Debber,

Firstly congratulations you're on your upcoming surgery which is not far off! 🥳🥳

Unfortunately my scheduled date has been postponed due to covid cases taking up all the beds in the hospital and I've been told either May 2nd or the 16th even those days aren't guaranteed at this time! it all depends on the availability of the beds.

Oh well I look at it from a glass half full side, I'm a believer that everything happens for a reason, better late than never! Good luck on your surgery and please keep me updated as I will be following you😊

      All the best🤞🙏😊

  19. VSG surgery was on 4 January and I am very happy with the progress.  I am just on 30kgs down and within a very healthy BMI.  My clothes fit well, but my skin is pretty nasty saggy - a small price to pay for health and wellbeing.  My hair has finally stopped shedding at a great rate of knots, pardon the pun, and I've just had my first haircut by a lovely lady who has had a bypass.  She really understood my concerns and assured me she can see good healthy growth coming through now.

It's coming out of winter down here in Australia and I'm looking forward to not being as hot and sweaty as usual this summer, and being able to wear a bathing suit at the beach without feeling embarrassed.

    Onwards and upwards 🙂

  20. Hi guys:

I’m Julie , I’m new here and  getting close to surgery and I’m still undecided on sleeve vs bypass. My apprehension comes from things I’ve heard over the years, horror stories. I realize my fear may be based on things which may not be true and I know the procedure has went through many updates and improvements. I worry about dumping and malabsorption. My surgeon is recommending bypass and my provider in the program likes the sleeve. So I’m making myself crazy. Anyone having surgery at Bailey in Owasso, OK. I could use a buddy.

    1. Stalled

      Stalled

Hi Jules, When I was deciding between a sleeve vs bypass I decided on the sleeve because if it doesn't work completely, I could still do the gastric bypass later. But I wouldn't be able to do the opposite. Maybe that is something to consider along with your other situations. Obviously, I don't know your medical history so I wouldn't make assumptions or push you one way or the other. But I do know that for me, the sleeve was a much less daunting surgery than the bypass.

    2. Lynnlovesthebeach

      Lynnlovesthebeach

When I was making my decision, after doing my research, I ruled out the sleeve because I already had severe reflux. My doctor asked me about the duodenal switch but I had already decided on the gastric bypass. It was the best decision for me. I never had any pain afterwards. I have never had "dumping syndrome" because I don't eat the things that cause it-high sugar! I have had what I call the most perfect surgery possible. I lost 114% of my excess weight and have maintained it for about 2 yrs now because I follow the guidelines I was given. This is a lifestyle change, not any easy way out! I will be 3 yrs post op in Oct. One of the best decisions I ever made! Good luck with your decision.

  21. Hi everyone!!! I hope all is well.

After a bariatric Surgery/gastric bypass procedure and a patient loses over 100lbs/has a lot of loose skin............. does that SAME Surgeon perform a tummy tuck and a loose skin removal for the patient/ does health insurance cover it?

I will be sure to ask the Surgeon when I have my initial meeting with him/her 2 months from now.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    1. Lynnlovesthebeach

      Lynnlovesthebeach

No, different surgeons. A plastic surgeon does the tummy tuck and skin removal. You would have to check with your insurance for coverage because they are all different. Some cover panniculectomy (loose skin hanging from the abd) but most will not be covered.

what you’re going through is absolutely normal I cannot stress enough to stay hydrated. It is incredibly important to stay hydrated! The weight loss is going to come off stay hydrated get the protein and stay with the diet that the doctor recommends do not try to skip the steps! just remember you’re in this for the long haul! I am currently six months out from my surgery and I am extremely happy with it just remember you’re doing this for your health and well-being… And you’re not alone… If you have an air bubble that you feel in your chest that is normal… A lot of us have been through it just stay hydrated listen to your doctor follow the steps and be proud of yourself.-holly 6mo post op gastric bypass you got this!
