New and at the very beginning of my VS journey
Phoenix Rising posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello Everyone, I am new to this site and at the beginning of my VS journey. I am English, living in England and have been overweight all my life. I have a huge amount of weight to lose. I had been seeing a dietician for the past six months (with no real success) (had a lifetime of failing at every diet going) and the dietician mentioned WLS. She suggested I speak to my Dr. about this as I have type 2 diabetes and she thought I would definately fit the requirements for surgery (my BMI is 59). I went to the Dr. who was at great pains to point out that WLS meant you could only eat smaller portions and had I thought about doing that????? Despite this he did say he would fill in all the forms to see if I could get approval for funding for surgery on the NHS but not to get my hopes up. A week later I got a telephone call to say I had been approved. Another week later I got my first appointment at the hospital to see the Dr. there. During my time with the dietician (who was a lovely lady who actually listened to what I said) she put me on a 'milk' diet for three weeks. I lost 10lb the first week, 7lb the second and gained 2lb the third week! I have since regained all but 4lbs of that weightloss, even though I have been extremely careful with my diet. I know I will have to lose more before I can have surgery and am planning to put myself back on the milk diet next week. I am trying to lose that 5% people have talked about on here. I am hoping that if I manage to lose that magical 5% they will push me forward for the surgery. Although I only joined this site recently I have been reading avidly for the past fortnight. There is so much useful and interesting information here, and everyone is really generous with their own experiences and knowledge. I hope that my journey details will be equally beneficial to others as it progresses. I chose the name Phoenix Rising as I hope that people will begin to see the new slimmer fitter me rising from the ashes of the old fat unhealthy me. I know I have a very long way to go and look forward to having your help and support. Thank you -
I joined a gym and hit the treadmill for 35 minutes tonight...even broke a sweat and everything! :clap2: Feel so much better now than I did when I got off work. Other improvements are that I have just about weaned off of caffeine entirely. I used to drink 4-5 cups of coffee and 1-2 glasses of iced tea/day. Even the smallest amount has been upsetting my tummy this week and I found that I really just preferred plain old water. Once I get completely off, I will try my best to stay off. It just makes me hungrier. Now that I am past most of the pain and almost past most of the fatigue, I am really, really getting pumped about all of this....the 10# drop doesn't hurt either. This is looking like it's going to be a very, very good year. DH came to me this evening after work, when I was VERY tired, and asked what he could do to support me. I said, "Unload the dishwasher." He laughed and later watched me unload it. 10 minutes after that he was out for his poker game. I went to the gym. :ermm I mean, why did he bother asking? I was serious when I said that....all I really needed at that moment was a little help around the house. Pretty disappointing. He did say that he can already tell in my face that I've lost weight. Cool. So can I. Activity 35 mins on treadmill @ 2.8 mph Nutrition Total: 869 Fat:55 496 58% Carbs:35 111 13% Fiber:7 0 0% Protein:60 241 28%

Nausea and Vomiting all of a sudden 2 months pistol
barbw1016 replied to fsulady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am too much out and I still have the nausea and vomiting I can't eat much and I can hardly get the fluids down and the Protein shakes down it just makes me sick to even think about drinking and I'm at a standstill with my weight so I'm kind of disgusted right now about it Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App -
Met with surgeon today to sign all paperwork and set up pre-op testing for next week. I had to pay for 2 weeks of protein shakes out of pocket...$250.00...not covered by insurance. Supposedly that fee also covers membership to a monthly support group for this surgeons patients. I went to Walmart today and bought 2 mini blenders. One for work and one for home. I got gallon jugs of water, diet ice tea, and crystal light mix. I made dinner for the rest of the family and went to cvs while they ate to get photos developed. I'm going to have my first shake sometime soon. I wanted to wait until the hunger kicked in. Hopefully it will be good. I am to drink one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In between I can only have non-calorie drinks. The surgeon said he wants me to lose some weight before surgery. Hmmmm....I couldn't for the last 10 yrs and now it's supposed to because I'm told to? This is gonna be tough....real tough for a binger like me.

I tried one that had too much sugar an I got nauseated weak an felt bad so b careful. Just think about the spring an wearing shorts and a tank top without fat arms an legs that rub. Ha.

Congratulations on your sleeve! I too had many people tell me I didn't need to have surgery, but I felt in my heart it was the right thing to do for ME. I weighed over 250 and had lost 50-75 pounds multiple times, and never been able to keep it off. I am so happy that I followed through and had the surgery! I am 5 months post op yesterday, and have lost 90 pounds so far. The weight loss has slowed down considerably in the last two months, and I still have another 25-30 pounds that I would like to loose. BUT if I never loose another ounce, I am happy, thrilled and perfectly satisfied with how I look and feel now. I have NEVER been this thin in my life, and I am loving it. I went from a size 26-28 to a 12! My goal is to be in single digit sizes (8; 6; 4? would be wonderful). But if I never loose another ounce, I am happy! Even better than how I look, is how I feel. Most of the time I have loads more energy than I did prior to the surgery. I have been able to go off my cholesterol meds, my high blood pressure meds, my arthritis meds and my allergy meds (I still don't get that one!) and my diuretic. I am left taking only Nexium for acid reflux and a stool softener. I feel great. I swam all summer for exercise and am now starting a walking program since it is to cold to swim. Take heart. You WILL feel better soon! I think we all had some buyer's remorse initially. BUT it get SO much better! You're in my prayers!

Thank you. I now have protein once a day usually in my coffee since it is chocolate flavored. I am feeling absolutely no restriction so I am definately going to call the doctor soon. I went to vegas and gained four pounds as I relied on only my restriction to help me. I am sure I will lose it as I am going back to the 30-20-30 and my own imposed restriction. Hope you are doing well. Thanks again for writing.

Hate Hate Hate My Band These Days--Need Advice!
bigenuff replied to purple3797's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am in a very similar situation.I think this is more about what's going on in ur life than the band.it seems that with the stressors u have you would probably be in worse shape with out the band.if u don't have time to focus on eating right band foods now I think u will still make bad choices with out it because your focus is on keeping a roof over ur head not ur on health. I have 3 part time jobs now and had to move quickly last week and I have been eating crap also.when I try to eat right I'm not chewing slowly enough( don't have time, trying to get to my next job)and I've been having a lot of painful stuck episodes.so I've been eating the easy bad stuff and have gained back I couple of pounds in the last 2 weeks. But I know it's me and not the band.my goal is to get through the next couple of weeks.I'll be done moving and hopefully getting permanent fulltime employment. Then refocus on my health.good luck to u. -
Hate Hate Hate My Band These Days--Need Advice!

Here is my crazy story. I had the band done Nov of 2010. I have not had any crazy problems but the band has been getting on my nerves lately. I initially lost about 30 pounds and then my life had a big crisis hit..the stress is near killing me and I started eating crap and of course gained weight. I am working 4 part time jobs to keep my family afloat, i have two young kids and no time to take care of myself. Anyway i find it so hard to eat lately, it hurts and the crap food is so much easier to eat. I have been to the doctore but is not much help. I feel like i vomit about twice a week but i avoid the good food for me since it is hard to eat it and i dont have relaxing time to eat slowly non stressed. I hate never getting the normal full feeling, sick of the lump in the throat and pain in the chest, sick of the being afraid of certain foods, plus i feel bloated all the time and gassy. Then i have been hearing all the horror stories about the band and cancer and then i get anxiety thinking i have a ticking time bomb inside of me. sometimes i really truly regret getting this, It was a waste of time and money and heart ache. I feel like i was losing better without this thing in me and feeling better also. I want it out most days but not even sure if insurance will cover it. Any ideas suggestions??? Mot sure what to do. thanks in advance! -

Hello - New here and looking for some HELP!
Mommy2Ps replied to dina1967's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You sound like I did back in the beginning. Hang in there, it does get better!!! You're in bandster hell! The limbo period of time when you're banded, but not at your sweet spot yet. Don't worry, you will get there! First off, you NEED to eat. Skipping meals and slacking on Protein will not help you lose weight. When you don't eat, your body is holding on to every ounce it can get and you go into starvation mode. By eating, you will increase your metabolism and make the food start working for you. Get some Protein shakes, Protein Bars, etc... they will help. If you're getting stuck on meat and vomiting, it could be one of three things, or a combo of all. 1) You're taking too big of bites and not chewing enough. or 2) you're eating too fast. or 3) you're band is too tight. I think you said you've only had one fill, so I doubt you're too tight. I'm willing to bet you're eating too fast and taking too big of bites. We're all guilty of it, and by vomiting, it's your band telling you you're doing something wrong. Throwing up is the last thing you want to do, as you could slip your band. Meaning, your stomach, while contracting to push food out, will come up through the band and that will cause the band to slip down. That is NO GOOD. Try cutting your food up in peices you would feed a toddler (or no bigger than the eraser on the tip of a pencil). Sure, it's a pain, but it will help. Great job at drinking the Water. Still practice small sips. Trust me, when you're tighter, big gulps will be a thing of the past unless you enjoy pain! Hmmmm, what else can I offer from my journey?!?! I don't claim to know all the answers, and Lord knows I've cussed this band on more than one occasion, but at the end of the day I'm almost 55lbs lighter and it's all because of the band and from what I've learned here and other blogs!! Good luck!!! You CAN do this and you WILL! -
From the album: From beginning to end...I will get to the end this time.

Thanks for the info. That definitely makes sense...you aren't really going to see any stomach muscles with pounds of fat covering them! It's hard to get out of that old school thinking that sit ups and stuff are the key to a flatter stomach. Thanks for reminding me that it's having less fat on your stomach that makes the difference! Now I'll feel better doing my cardio knowing it's burning off that tummy! And I do think my surgeon was mostly referring to isometric stomach exercises...the more I think about it that's what we were discussing when he said he wasn't a fan of isometric exercise...I don't think her was referring to weight training in general.

Down 8.6 lbs from last visit 4wks ago and 36 lbs since 2 wks before surgery. Woohoo! Dr put in 3cc in my empty band and said most times green zone is between 4 cc & 7.5cc. He said," You are doing very well with the weight loss and I know it's more you then the band". "Pretty soon, the band will do more for you"." Only liquids for 24hrs". He also said for me to listen to my shoulder pain and stop eating, when it hurts. Cheryl, you were right about the nerve thing. I knew you were all along, but having my Dr confirm it just makes it even better. Next appt Jan. 7, 2013 Makes me happy, when I make Dr. happy!

I'm going down hill, i need some support & advice please.
Karen85 replied to Karen85's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
hey every one, thanks for all ur support and advice and thanks mss for everything u told me. i do that all the time. when i cheat 1 day with like ice cream or something and i'm still eating healthy by dinner i'm like ah what the heck i'll cheat for the rest of the day and go back to my diet tomorrow, and i just wind up cheatin day after day which is really bad. i usually cheat with ice cream, or chocolate, or peanut butter lol and they are all no good for me. but i read what u wrote and it does make sense and i should be thinking and asking myself is this food gonna get me at my goal weight? i'm gonna think of that every time i feel the urge to cheat. so thank you. -
I had no restriction until my third fill. Be aware it may take a couple months to get to a sweet spot. It wouldn't hurt to call your doc. and see if you can get in sooner. For now, I suggest you concentrate on eating the right foods (low carb, low fat, high protien). and eating slowly. Your portions may be larger than they will be with restrction but it should keep you from gaining anymore. Excersise is also a key component to weight loss. I highly reccomend you start if you haven't already. Start out slow such as a medium paced walk and gradually increase the duration/intensity. It's so tough to start but it will become second nature very quickly. I can't workout because of plastic surgery, boy do I miss it.

Hi everyone, I was banded May 6th of this year and was doing really well until I hit a brick wall three weeks ago. I had my 3rd fill on August 3rd and the doctor and I were hopeful that this would get me in the green zone but it hasn't. After losing two pounds by the end of that week, the last three weeks I've bascially plateaued. I've gained and lost the same 1.5 pounds. I am getting my Protein and Water and exercising almost every day. I've changed up my exercise, varied my calories but never more than 1200 and still haven't been able to break this plateau. The only good thing is that my scale is recording body fat loss even if there has been no weight loss. Since I'm still 50 pounds from goal, this stall three months out is heartbreaking and frustrating. I have made an appointmen for a fill tomorrow. I can still eat about 8oz of food and am hoping that this will help me get beyond this stall. Has anyone else exerpienced a pleateau this soon? I suppose techincally I started dieting last summer but took a two month break before surgery so I really think my diet started in May. Thanks for listening!

What would have made your journey a little easier?
xavier replied to LaurenKauf's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
More focus on fills. I dont know why so many places are so 'cheap' with fills. These boards are full of stuff about diets, low cal this and that, exercise programs etc....but I had already failed all that, right? With a perfect fill I can forget about all that crap and just lose weight. I dont exercise and I dont eat anything low cal etc!!! So many people on here are still dieting etc and still feeling like a failure if they 'cheat' ...its all in the fill! -
Today is my 3rd day out and i was told i would be ready for thick fluids today such as creamy soups etc.. I been so looking forward to this day since been on clear liquids but now i have no desire for anything. I tried a small shake this morning got it part way down. Now i am trying to do a slim fast 3 2 1 shake and no desire for it. All i can do to sip it and try to get it down. WHen does some desire for food come back. I mean i know if i dont start getting some calories into my body its going to go into starvation mode and i wont lose weight.

Thanks for your reply, weight went down very fast in the first two weeks, going slow now, as spected. -
I went on vacation at the beginning of the month and can't get back on track to lose the 2 lbs I gained on vacation. I am stressed because of getting kids back to school and starting full time job. I am exhausted and can't make myself get up to exercise. Any suggestions, hints or tips to stop eating crap? Thanks, Alicia

April 5, 2011 Today is 2 weeks out, and Im feeling good. I'm completely off and pain meds and rarely have soreness around the incisions (except right after walking for 20+ mins). The most notable changes are in the inclusion of one egg per day to my continued clear liquid diet, (I never thought I would be so excited to eat half a scrambled egg!) and beginning my vitamin regiment. My surgeon has his own line of multi-vitamins and supplements designed for people who've had weight loss surgery so I ordered a bottle and picked up some sub-lingual b12 from GNC. So far so good. My stomach seems to be tolerating the changes well, and to this day I haven't had a moment's nausea. Since going back to work (yesterday) Ive started waking up in the middle of the night and having trouble getting back to sleep. Maybe I've just thrown off my internal time clock with all the vacation time? My hope is that it will sort itself out. I'm still pretty fatigued most of the time. Oh yeah, someone came up to me at work today and told me I looked like I lost a ton of weight. That was frickin awesome. The scale keeps moving down but I'm comfortably wearing the same clothes... Not sure where the weight is coming from. And to be honest, when I look in the mirror I don't see it (yet). Ah well, steady the course. www.wlsvitamins.com ~Bellah~

Healthy carb balance is around 80 to 120 grams similar to Protein intake. You need the carbs to burn for energy to allow the protein to be processed by the body for muscles and nerves. Granted you get more calories from carbs but once you start exercising you will need the carbs to keep the weight loss from dropping to fast and burning your protein.
