June 2022 surgery buddies
Mariann812 replied to Jessica1024's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was on clear liquids while in the hospital and allowed to have shakes when I got home which was Day 2 post op. I hate all of the clear protein drinks. They are sickeningly sweet. I lucked out in the hospital because I had debilitating nausea and I was given a pass on the clear liquid protein. I was on a steroid cocktail in the hospital for the nausea which worked amazingly well. I had jello and broth on my hospital trays. When I went home, I was able to have shakes -

Be very excited! I wish I had been more excited and less nervous! My surgery was Wednesday 6/8 and I already feel 25 years younger and just fabulous. I had a massive hiatal hernia repaired, gastric bypass, and gall bladder removal. This surgery was the best decision I ever made. shopping: you may be bloated from IV Fluid when you go home. I bought a pair of shoes 1/2 size larger and it’s a good thing that I did. TEGADERM PATCHES: I was able to shower 2 days post op, but you don’t want the Water beating down on the laparoscopic sites. sugar free ICE POPS: I bought about 6 boxes of these because a couple of weeks ago, they were scarce. If I wake in the middle of the night, I’ll have an ice pop. BROTH: low sodium. SMALL HAND HELD STRAINER: so you can strain cream of whatever Soup. YOUR favorite Protein Shake. Mine is premier Peanut Butter chocolate. CRYSTAL LIGHT: pick your favorite flavors. I go through this like crazy. FAIRLIFE SKIM or 1% MILK: my nutritionist told me to buy it to thin shakes, put in soup. She was right. I bought Nespresso pods and K Cups in Decaf because I do miss the taste of coffee. STOOL SOFTENER: I bought Miralax. BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR: my surgeon wants me to monitor my bp and get in touch with my PCP when it starts to come down. I wore hospital gowns in the hospital but had some nice lounge wear for when I got home. BANDAIDS: I’m on an oral bloodthinner for a month. The tiniest scratch will bleed like you can’t believe. SUGAR FREE JELLO: so many packs of that. B COMPLEX VITAMINS: tiny capsules…easy to swallow. I’ll let you know if I think of anything else. -
I’m only on clear liquids the day before and 3 days after. Then I’ll gradually go to soft foods. Do you like the premier protein clear?

I'm not feeling better yet, which is strange to me. the shakes are just not tasting right. I don't know if I am coming down with a cold or something and that's why, but it is making it really hard for me to get my protein in. My pre-op COVID test is tomorrow and I'm kind of worried about it

Protein 20 is whey protein. I checked gnc and did not see any. I’ll look at Barebell. Thanks. -
What's your post-op diet look like? I'm clear liquids for a week, so I have Premier Protein Clear, Bone Broths, Jello, and Popsicles ready to go. My surgeon allows sugar in the first week after surgery due to calories being so low.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
kcuster83 replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had mine about 2 weeks ago, about 9 weeks post op. I only ate 2 pieces to try it out but I was so happy and it sat fine! I had it again last night. 4pieces! I just make sure I already hit my protein goal because there isn't much protein in the small amount I can eat. -
Calories per day
Sunshine Princess replied to audreywilson92's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Heading into 5 weeks out from surgery and my calories are anywhwere from 480-700 per day. I focus more on getting 70-80 grams of protein per day and meeting my water goals. -
Find a protein shake or drink you really like. That makes things a lot easier. I found drinking water in between sips of the protein shake made me less nauseaous. Plan for light activity those first three days. I was moody, grumpy, tired, and achy.

Hi Healthy4longerlife: I'm only two weeks post-op but can really appreciate what you are saying about how challenging it is to manage the relationship with food. I was already in therapy prior to surgery (mostly for anxiety but then to help me wade through my feelings and emotions related to having the bypass surgery as well as my relationship with food). I highly recommend exploring therapy as an option. I have no regrets in working with a therapist. For me, my emotional eating is directly related to my anxiety, so having that avenue to work things out is really helpful and then I don't feel like my family has to bare the brunt of my emotional upheavals. I'm a better mom and wife for it. I did OA off and on for many years, and it can also be a helpful place to land - especially if it works well for you to have a group and/or sponsor to be accountable to on a daily/weekly or more basis. Both options require personal work and delving into what is "poking at you" when it comes to using food for more than just nourishing your body. I suspect I will continue to struggle with this aspect of my relationship with food. Self-awareness is key to working through it, and you seem to have that! I'm rooting for you to find the best option for you. The WLS is just a "tool" - we all still have to work on that "head hunger." Here's hoping that there are better ways to quiet that voice inside that says we must eat in order to feel.

Barebell has a few plant based bars that are very good. I get them at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Orgain has some plant based powders that aren't bad. I'm not aware of any whey free protein waters, but maybe GNC would have options? -

Thank all for suggestions. The Built Bars all contain milk. I do have a powder I love, EarthChimp. Couldn’t find ripple water. Sadly. Plan to order some Owyn and Evolve shakes to try. I heard about Misfit vegan bars and plan to try them. I travel for work so I need bars with me when I can plan well and I travel with powder already so that’s easy. Found Proti items on this app that have some fruit protein drinks - gonna order those for something Too. -
Second Month Stall?
summerseeker replied to Sunshine Princess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes its very common. I personally had a 5 week stall at 2 months out but I was not getting in enough protein or water for my daily diet. My dietician said it was like a flight of stairs - plateau's and down wards, over and over. You will get very use to it on your journey. Good luck with a drop soon -
So this kicks off month two post sleeve surgery and my weight loss has slowed down some. I had the three week stall; had a little movement last week and then nothing again. I havent changed much; the only thing I've added is veggies (zucchini, tomato, and mushrooms have been added back). PRotein is still the same, exercise is still the same or higher since now I can swim. I'm sure hormones are just f'ing with me, but is this common?

Lap band Revision to GSV- painful open wound
JFizzle posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi All, I had a lap band removal and revision to the GSV on 6/6/22. The GSV laparoscopic scars healed/ scabbed over quickly, but the large cut/ open wound left to heal after the lap band removal is super painful and gross. It is deep, has to be packed with sterile gauze and dressed every 1-2 days. My doctor says it’s healing nicely and that pain is just part of the process. I have googled and not found any information on this process. Has anyone else had the revision and had to deal with the open wound? Are there any other options like wearing a drain? This pain is worse than my 2 C-sections! I feel like this part was glossed over and not even addressed in my pre-op visits! It feels so weird and disgusting walking around with an open wound. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.- 2 replies

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
sprukop0924 replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I heartily agree!! My whole goal in having this surgery was to have a tool to help me with portion control - NOT to be on a diet the rest of my life! Fortunately, my program does not prohibit carbs - just prefers that I eat the healthier ones - such as brown rice or cauli-rice and whole wheat options. I can TOTALLY live with that! -
What about soups? I am in week 5 post-op and STILL resort to soups when I am not "feeling" other foods I'm allowed. A hot soup just seems to go down easier. If you can pack it with protein, even better! Beats a shake (at least for me)

Try the "Built" Bar. You can find on Amazon. It has 20 grams of protein and 130 calories. I tried the salted caramel and the coconut and they are both very good. I use these when I am going to be out for a while and do not get a chance to stop for lunch. It holds the hunger off and gives me a shot of protein. -

Day 4 of Liquid: Weak and Worried
Rockmantic78 replied to doobie31's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, I’m new to this site and also am on Day 3 of Liquid Diet. My surgeon limited me to 2.5 protein shakes per day and only water, crystal light, decaf tea, or any broth in between. So yes, I’m feeling miserable and so hungry I am even craving food I wasn’t too fond of before. I am having the gastric bypass surgery on June 27th. Thanks in advance for any support. -

I don’t like Owyn as much as I like Evolve but I’m not really a fan of that either. As for powders Orgain has a plant based peanut butter flavor that’s divine. I also am a fan of just hemp foods hemp powder but it’s literally just hemp powder so you might have to jazz it up. Sadly, I haven’t found a vegan/dairy free protein bar I like yet. -
My surgery is the 20th so I’m on Day 11 odd the pre-op diet. Today was really a bad day because I tried to have my shake for breakfast and it made me nauseous. I took a few sips and it was just making me too sick so I thought I might just be sick of that flavor so I tried a different one. That one made me nauseated as well. I’m at a loss of why. Normally I have no problems with the protein shakes I but, but today they just are making me sick.
