Hi there. I am recently banded and so far, I'm loving it. No troubles with food coming back up or reflux. Typical breakfast for me is fat-free Greek yogurt sprinkled with Kashi Go Lean. Typical lunch is sliced deli turkey and some veggie on the side. Typical dinner is broiled fish or lean meat, with a veg on the side. I like turkey chili too, and it works well in my meal plan. I found a chicken salad made with yogurt in place of mayo at costco -- it is delish and it too works well in my meal plan. My surgery was quick and recovery was quick and uneventful. I went into the operating room at 8:30 AM and left for home by 11 AM. I had surgery on a Wednesday and went back to work (a desk job) on Monday. My advice to someone looking into a Lap Band would be to consider follow-up care after the surgery when you are choosing your surgeon. Good follow-up care requires a surgical practice with experience and commitment to its Lap Band patients. You should expect to be visiting your surgeon's office regularly throughout the first year so be sure you are willing and able (financially and travel-wise) to do this.

Newbie on Protein
nearperfectmess replied to Debbie915's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Debbie915 I second the Unjury! I'm 4 weeks post-op now and the unflavored unjury has been great (well...as great as you can get when you're dealing with Protein powder). My favorite is the protein pudding I make - a box of sugar free Jell-O Pudding (I'm partial to vanilla, but any of the SF flavors will work), one packet of unflavored Unjury powder and two cups of Fairlife Skim Milk (for the extra protein). Each 1/2 cup serving is 11.75 grams of protein. It's a nice change when you get sick of greek yogurt or other things and want something smooth. The Unjury chicken soup flavor is surprisingly decent, as well, if you want something that will just stand on it's own. -
SpideyMom, No one has anything yummy at this point. It is hard to get excited about cream soup ,yogurt and protein shakes. LOL, but it is not funny. Maybe in a few days some people will be back on regular food and have some good recipes for us. The chicken sounds delc. and I am going to try it as soon as I am on regular food. I will have to go get a sf Dr. Pepper as I drank all of them before surgery. My how I miss my diet drinks.

Left shoulder pain 2 yrs later
Tamie2169 replied to bandaide's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im only one and a half week out of surgery. I have already had 2 horribly, painful days where the left shoulder and neck pain was so bad that my doctor suggested going to the ER. Went to the ER and they ran all kinds of tests. Said everything was normal and nothing wrong with me. When I saw the doctor the very next day he did state that the pain usually does happen from either too much gas in the stomach causing squeezing and issues where the band gets moved around a lot, or eating too much which can cause the band to be placed in stress rubbing again or hitting that nere that is extremely close to where the bad is located. The doctor checked my port and made sure that there was absolutely NO air or saline in my band. In less than 2 days after seeing the doctor I've had severe pain again today. I was at work, again when it happened. I had only had a yogurt for breakfast, half a banana about 3 hours later, and then oatmeal about 2 hours after that. I had NOT had anything to drink and the pain started an HOUR after I had eaten the oatmeal. I have been in pain all afternoon and was AFRAID to eat or drink anything. Finally I did have about a 1/2 cup of vegetable soup (pureed) and a tiny swallow of water. I am terrified of that PAIN and do NOT want it to show its ugly head again. The doctor did tell me that it should not last more than 30-45 minutes at a time (try 6 hours today!), and that it should only happen in the early stages of recovery. It should NOT be a common occurance and to let him know what was happening. I have my post-op appointment with my doctor scheduled this coming wednesday and I am going to be very proactive about this issue. For now I know that I am not eating enough, getting enough protein (maybe 30 grams a day if that) and am very concerned that if I eat or drink hardly anything at all the pain starts back up. I have no idea on what to do about this issue! Any ideas out there fellow bandsters? -
I'm having my surgery tomorrow morning (ahhhh!!) but I'm doing some last minute shopping today. I've already purchased everything my surgery center advised me to get to eat post-op, but I'm curious if anyone has any great recipes for full liquid diet post-op? anything exciting or different that helped get you through the full liquid diet stage. I will be on fulls for 2 weeks post op, and I'm sure I'll get sick of yogurt, broth, jello, cream of wheat etc. Thanks in advance!!

February bypass buddies?
FluffyChix replied to RunningLibrarian's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Keep in mind, you may need to verify your meal size with your doc or RD. Because when most people here 4-6oz, they start thinking weight--as in weighing on a scale. But, the reference they gave you still alludes to a volumetric measurement. 1oz by VOLUME (measure) = 2tbsp = 1/8cup by VOLUME = 1/4oz by weight 4oz by VOLUME (measure) = 8tbsp = 1/2cup by VOLUME = 2oz by weight 6oz by VOLUME (measure) = 12tbsp = 3/4cup by VOLUME = 3oz by weight ************** Conversely, most protein in it's pure/fluffy/cooked state, unweighted down by meat lube or other moisture additives like light or fat free mayo and dressings and sauces add up like this: 1oz protein by weight (then flaked, chopped fine, or pulled) = 2oz by VOLUME = 1/4c by VOLUME = 4tbsp 2oz protein by weight (then flaked, chopped fine, or pulled) = 4oz by VOLUME = 1/2c by VOLUME = 8tbsp ************** And then there's the whole "meat salad thing" like tuna salad, etc... 2oz tuna, salmon, canned chicken by weight (flaked, chopped, pulled) + 1tbsp low fat mayo/yogurt + 1/2tsp mustard + 1/2tsp dill relish = 1/4c by VOLUME = 4tbsp. It will weigh more than 2oz by weight because of the addition of the condiments. Fun and intriguing bs isn't it? -
6 weeks out - how many calories are appropriate?
loridee11 replied to Fat2FabMyWay's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We have similar stats and surgery around the same time. I don't have much hunger, but I had a really easy recovery (yay!) and don't seem to have any food aversions or challenges with eating and drinking which means I've been able to push myself to meet my protein and fluid goals from early on. That means even though I'm limiting my meals to 3-4 oz lean protein (usually with light mayo or greek yogurt because I am still on soft foods, or I eat a lot of eggs) and then if I am still hungry some soft cooked veggies, I get almost 800 calories a day. Part of that is because I'm still using protein shakes to supplement I am seeing my surgeon and NUT next week for my 6 week. My weight loss has been really slow the last 3 weeks and I'm hoping it's just a stall and they'll have some advice to pick it back up. -
I had a mini gastric bypass and after the surgery I was told I needed to take 2 weeks off. I thought I’d be fine after 1, but now I get it. Having extra time to heal and build back some energy is very important. @fiddles - just a very heavy, uncomfortable feeling. It’s like I can feel food sitting in my esophagus. When I first started on liquids earlier in the week, I could tell right away when I had enough water. But with the liquidy yogurt, it’s been harder for me to tell right away.

need to shrink liver.....help
PinePal replied to angelicforever's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I start my pre-op (liver shrinking) diet on monday. 1/2 cup cream of wheat for breakfast, a 1/2 cup yogurt for lunch, and 1/2 cup of creamy Soup for dinner. I also get to have 8 oz of Protein shake and milk over the course of the day. My husband just got banded on Monday and did this 2 weeks of pre-op dieting as well. He lost 10 pounds or so. That is what our surgeon expects. I wish you luck with your liver shrinkage. -
Hello, and questions about Foam and Acid!
I Can and I Will replied to PhotoSteve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had egg drop soup today...pretty good. My challenge now is some of the medicine I'm taking. One of the pills causes MAJOR heart burn...I've tried taking it first with nothing in stomach, taking it with yogurt or eating...still burns. Going to call doctor as don't like the feeling and want to make sure it's not doing damage. He told me I could continue to take, just need to make sure. Can't wait to test some of her receipes....I laugh because she calls it "porn"....I look everyday to see and now understand her label....LOL -
I've recently discovered that Greek yogurt is a good substitute for cream cheese but I hadn't thought about mayo. I make great deviled eggs and I know at least my husband would love me to make more. Hmmm. Eggs are on sale this week.

I am currently on full liquids and I am trying activia vanilla yogurt for the first time. It's in a 4oz container. Is this too much. It's regular yogurt not Greek. I am letting it liquefy in my mouth before I swallow (that sounded gross.) what are your thoughts?

Struggling with junk food.
McButterpants replied to youthguy80's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Good point...I went to the grocery store right before my lunch the other day and I was feeling hungry. I ended up buying some Greek Yogurt pretzels. I grabbed two and ate them - my husband grabbed the bag and put them in the back seat. He told me I should wait until we got home to eat a real meal. (Prior to surgery I would have gotten really mad at him, but now I'm thankful - he's watching out for me.) -
I think it depends on the environment you work in. I work from home, so obviously not an issue. Some people, like those who work in nursing or retail, may have rules against drinking/eating while on duty. In this case, it's best to talk to HR or a manager about getting a doctor's note to allow them to eat/drink while working. After surgery, it's not possible to eat and drink quickly, and you will need to sip all day to get your fluids in. If you have an active or outdoors job, it's even more important to be drinking a lot. I'm not sure why a smoothie in particular would be difficult to drink at work, although you'd have to have someplace to wash the container so it doesn't get gross. I assume you would make it at home? Probably for the first few weeks/months a smoothie wouldn't be the best bet as it's too much fiber and not enough protein; a protein shake is better for that (personally I can only tolerate the premade kind because the ones make with powder always seem gritty to me). I also am eating a lot of yogurt; maybe you will need a small lunch bag/box that is insulated and some ice packs which you can buy cheaply on Amazon.

10 weeks and I'm still struggling with appetite
summerseeker replied to mamoosbabes's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am one of the lucky ones, I don't have any hunger 27 days out of 28. I find if I eat 4 or 5 small meals a day works well. That way I can get all my necessary food groups in. Pasta, bread, and potatoes are off my menu, no tolerance of them yet. It has taken me almost a year to master this as I was on really low calories for a long time due to severe restriction and nausea. I can manage to get in 1000 to 1300 calories a day this way and all my protein requirements Breakfast will be a protein yogurt Mid morning a small glass of milk Lunch is usually homemade soup, veg, lentil, mushroom, Thai style or Pho Mid afternoon - a piece of fruit and a small piece of cheese Evening meal - meat and salad or vegetables On my hungry day, I don't let my calories get above 1500 by eating lower calorie foods than on other days -
Hi. I hate this question so please don't yell at be about everyone is different. I want to do well! I have surgery may 31st, lost 10 lbs quick (the water), and pretty much nothing for 8 days. It should be too erly to plateau (after 1 week of loss nothing for week 2) I'm eating about 800-900 calories on soft foods, mostly from Greek yogurt and sf pudding. I'm getting about 80-90g of Protein and walking 30 min per day (port and hernia repair still hurt or I'd do more). Advice?? I tried to cut out sugar except what's in the milk products.

Question for sleevers
GreenTealael replied to moondoggie1983's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went with pink, red, white beans earlier on simply because they were softer. I (my sleeve) still prefers them now. I'm 7.5 months post op I was around 250 at consultation, 238 surgery day, currently 170 Hidden sugars are everywhere so carefully read food labels (f-ing yogurt) I could only stomach the protein shakes in coffee (premier caramel) or tea (premier peaches and cream ) THE BEST HACK EVER I use myfitnesspal which accounts for all macros if you load it properly. Takes the guess work out of everything for me and I can generate a report for my NUT I'm still trying to find the ideal brand of vitamins too after I spilled an entire new jar of gummies while cleaning. I'm trying Walmart's organic vegetarian multi vitamins next. -
Janine, you may have a point. I only had two yogurt shakes that day. What I ate was the only real food I had that day. I ate more carbs in that day than in a whole week. And I was highly stressed that day more that usual. You may be right. Thanks. I'm glad you're going to a support groups/dietician. I was at my support group when I felt bad the other night. There was a rep from Shaklee showing their products. My nutritionist recommends 2oz - 4oz of Protein. But that depends on your restriction level. At the meeting one person suffers daily with the same stuck food feeling. And she also have something hot before meals. But there are time when she doesn't eat to keep from having that feeling. There were mention of getting a small unfill which might relieve that feeling when eating. Does anyone think having a unfill might relieve the problem? If you have a small unfill you may not have restirction again. What is anyone's opinion on this? I'm at the best restriction since the band and an unfill of any amout will allow me to eat like before. I won't but the ability will be there. How's everyone else doing?

Fyi.. Unjury protein
Jackie Murphy replied to ShantelleElaine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try the unjury unflavored in orange juice...can't taste it or even detect it...that's the only way I get all my protein in....I agree it's nasty in yogurt, milk and flavored waters.... -
Pre-op diet killing me mentally!
Amp1504 replied to Shante92's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm at the end of day two and every time I close my eyes, I see an Outback Steakhouse commercial. I really don't know that I can do this. I am allowed 1-2 Atkins shakes a day, three servings of low-fat yogurt and all the no-calorie liquids like broth, crystal light, etc. I just wish the docs were more consistent...
