Thinking My Surgeon Has Lost His Mind!

Instincts exist for a reason. I would say this doctor's "plan" is unorthodox compared to mine, and from what I've read, many others. For what it's worth, I was on Clear liquids first week, started incorporating more full liquids the second week. Third week, slowly bringing in the mushies (greek yogurt, cottage cheese, applesauce). I wasn't even comfortable with solid foods until four weeks out, and even then it was another 1-2 weeks before I was more solid than mushy or liquid. As for lifting, my doctor said nothing over 25 pounds the first two weeks, then take it down by 5 pounds each week. He said it takes the stomach and the internal stiches about 6 weeks to FULLY heal. I would agree. As for soda, this is your chance to break any bad habits, so I would. I wasn't much of a soda drinker before surgery, but I did enjoy a good bubbly Water. Haven't touched the stuff since a week or so before surgery. Don't miss it at all! Well, I did have a tiny sip of an Orangina soda at dinner the other night (my husband loves to get it at our favorite Italian place). Granted, by the time I took a sip, it was a little flat. It really didn't do anything for me, didn't want more, just seemed like sweet empty calories. Take some time to browse these forums, you'll start to get an idea of what most doctors are saying and be able to form your own opinions. The important thing is to listen to your body, measure what you eat, pay attention to ingredients and how you prepare food, eat slowly, follow the no drinking before/after meal rule (10-20 min before, 30-45 after), take small bites, and the rest will happen naturally. The first two weeks are really about keeping your hydration up, taking your Vitamins and meds, and working up to the protein/calorie count that will help you best.

    Pre Op Diet

Hi all- I started my pre op diet yesterday and things went pretty well. I was a little tired and ended up going to bed earlier than normal. I'm curious, how much weight did you lose on your pre op diet? My surgeon's diet is two weeks, a shake for Breakfast, shake for lunch, yogurt/fruit/veggies for a snack, and a small dinner. I must admit I'm quite hungry and even dreamed about fried chicken and mac & cheese last night. I found that quite funny because the last time I had a piece of chicken was 7 years ago!

    5 days Banded

I'm sore that true. By port incision is the sorest. I can tell that I still have gas, my tummy is extended. I did have a BM today though. I also had yogurt. It was good to have something other then jello, protein or water. I've also had about 15 fish crackers through out the day. I'm going to the movies w/Steph and her kids to get away. My kids have been just bored and bothering each other and I need out and DH sees this. He's the one that called her for me. Ok it's fucken hot and I need to get away from the computer.
  4. I was allowed to mix strawberries, blueberries and bananas into a smoothie with stonyfield plain yogurt. I have not had apples yet so not sure. But that sure sounds good! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Easy way to get my protein in

I reeeeally wish I would have gotten unflavored Protein mix for post-op. I have vanilla, which was awesome during pre-op when I was mixing it with strawberries or bananas or peaches! Now, not so much. I mixed it with vanilla yogurt but it was just so much overpowering vanilla that it was a struggle to finish. So, I think I am going to hit GNC tomorrow to get some of the unflavored. Question though - does it change the texture of whatever you put it in? I have a weird food texture thing. 9 1/2 days left to go! If I made it through 30 days of pre-op dieting, I can surely do this! (that's what I keep telling myself. )
  6. Surgery on Dec. 11. Breakfast: Protein shake Lunch: 3-4oz. Chicken Salad w/ fat free mayo or sliced turkey breast with a little cheese Snack: Greek Yogurt Dinner: 3-4oz. grilled salmon & steamed broccoli Snack Sugar free pudding or some fruit.

    Need suggestions. First grocery trip

I am 9 months out and still need the help of miralax or colace weekly Constipation is definitely an issue for a lot of WLS patients. food ideas.....cold cuts, cheese sticks, eggs, Greek yogurt, sugar free pudding, avocado, ricotta cheese, hummus, edamame, spinach (make egg/spinach/cheese cups), portobello mushroom (portobello mushroom pizza or cordon bleu) (use the mushroom in place of the crust for the pizza and chicken for the cordon bleu) Perdue Shortcuts are AWESOME! They are already cooked chicken pieces and are great for a snack/lunch. I put them in a Fiber One Wrap or a low carb wrap 1/2 cup chicken, 1 ounce cheese and salsa and makes a great quesadilla. Now you are only 1 month out so you won't be able to eat all that, you could get two or three meals out of that, but so yummy!

    Week 2 post op question...

Two weeks out you may still have a little bit of swelling, which can make everything feel more constricted. My surgeon's advice to "eat until satisfied, not full". Sounds like you're doing that. When you get to solid foods, it's easier to measure because you can weight it. I can eat 4-5 oz of tuna salad or chicken salad, 4 oz of chicken, but only 3.5 of steak. Make sure you're getting in at least 64 oz of fluids, and if you're short on Protein, have another shake or a Greek yogurt. Calories aren't an issue because you won't get anywhere near 1,200 for a long time.
  9. I am 3 weeks post op too. I start my day with water so that I can get 8 oz in first thing. Then I move to Greek yogurt for the protein. Takes me about 20 minutes to eat one container. Try thinning out the protein shake with more water and sip on it for 30 minutes. That should give you more liquids and reduce that stuffed feeling.

    What Are You Eating?

My morning "muesli" - greek yogurt, walnuts, pumpkin, sunflower and chia seeds, cold hardboiled eggs, snall cans of salmon and tuna, babybel cheeses, cans of chick peas and three bean mix and my recent fave indulgence from the local thai restaurant - chicken satay skewers.
  11. I was sleeved on Wednesday the 29th and have had the most amazing and easy recovery. No gas pains at all, and only a little pain around my biggest incision which I only really feel when standing and sitting. I've had no nausea and have been able to drink Water with no problems since the night of surgery. It's been wonderful! Today (4 days post-op) is the first day I'm really eating anything. My surgeons instructions are to eat 2 oz of Soup, yogurt, pudding or cream of wheat 3 times a day. And to drink water and Protein shakes in between, to get the needed protein. After Breakfast (2 oz yogurt) and lunch (2 oz pudding) and my cup of decaf coffee with a splash of milk, my total calories added up to a whopping 87. ???? I am now drinking a Protein shake made with milk to add to my numbers, but dinner will be another 40 calories or so. By the end of the day, I will be lucky if I hit 400 calories. Nowhere in my literature from my surgeon does it mention a calorie goal. Does this low amount seem normal?

Yay! Onto full liquids....wait...what does that mean?

I did have some yogurt on my full liquids stage... however it was kind of a shock. Just take it easy with any new phase you're going through and be patient with yourself. I would wait a while on blending up chickens in soups, etc. until you know you are doing really well with your fuller liquids. Just take tiny tiny bites, and wait a few minutes between each bite too. Listen to your stomach to see its response. You'll get there!

    Soft food ideas?

Instead of mashed potatoes, try mashed cauliflower! This will keep your carbs lower. Steam, add a little plain Greek yogurt, a 1/4 tsp of beef concentrate stock (really helps with flavor), salt, pepper and mash! Sooo yummy! Later on post op I'm going to try the mashed cauliflower to top off a shepherd's pie!
  14. Hey there everyone, I'm about a week and a half out (liquid diet with Protein shakes, non creamy Soups, and Greek yogurt). Before my surgery, I lost 45 lbs on my own; now I'm sitting at home with 6 belly scars wondering how much weight is going to come off and when it's going to decide to do so. I know that everyone is different so I'm just speaking generally. How much did you lose and what was the time frame? I'm not impatient (my surgery date was a year in the making) just curious. Thanks

    Healthy living after Band surgery

All of the above advice is excellent, the only thing I would add is to keep a few healthy snacks with you at all times. This kept me from eating something I shouldnt be eating even if it was only a few bites. I was not a perfect eater, and still aren't , but having healthy snacks when out Im out is always a good option. Depending on what stage you're at, yogurt, a protein drink, cottage cheese, nuts, raw veggies, fruit slices are some favorites. Good luck !!

    Need friend in Kansas City

I know some that did eat baby foods but personally YUCK! and a lot of my band friends threw stuff in the blender like roasts and said they tasted great again I just couldn't get past it. Once I switched over to the creamy/mushy phase at the 14th day I was all over the various cheese Soups if they had veggies in them I either gummed them to oblivion or fished them out. I couldn't be bothered to do the whole blender thing like I should have. I also made a variety of Protein puddings by mixing whey protein powders with instant sugar free puddings. (Chocolate, Cheesecake, Lemon or Lime, etc..) Later I discovered an even healthier option where I would blend Cottage Cheese until smooth and replace most of the milk called for in the pudding recipe with that instead. It had a much higher protein to carb ratio and tasted great. Most people think it sounds disgusting but really it tastes very creamy like you made it with whole milk (no hint of salty at all) Oh and if you freeze the puddings for a while before you eat them and stir them up they taste like eating soft serve ice cream. Yummy. Right now one of my favorite protein rich foods is Cottage Cheese with some Yogurt and a Cherry or Rasberry Crystal Light bottle Water packet stirred in. I've just been feeling too lazy to take the time to blend up the puddings and mess up the kitchen. But I'm not sure if cottage cheese would be considered "soft" enough for the 14 day mark. This stage was SO HARD for me but I just kept repeating to myself I can put up with anything for just a couple weeks and being self pay I couldn't risk the possibility of having to pay for any complications much less the loss of money with more time off work without pay. Speaking of work, one of these days I may need to talk to you about the whole teeth whitening thing. I'd love to do it but always assumed too expensive. Tried one of those home kits once and was VERY sore and dissapointed though I managed to get my money back. I personally think I would need veneers to do any good on my teeth. (though I'm not nor ever was a smoker)

    Am I Eating Too Much?

I've eaten some yogurt (not a full 6 oz. cup, just about a third) since I first started this thread. I covered the Slim-Fast and put it back in the fridge. I'm hungry right now. I last ate about 30 minutes ago. I usually squelch the hunger with Water, so I'm not concerned that I want to eat right now.

Day 3 post surgery and I think I've lost 5 lbs!

CURRENT MOOD:  My neck is feeling better after getting some percocet last night. I still have no idea what they did to it - maybe some vigorous adjustments when they put in the breathing tube? I did something wrong today. I'm not sure exactly what it was but probably coffee and vitamins at the same time. I took my time drinking the coffee and had only chewable bariatric vitamins...didn't matter. I got pain like really bad indigestion and it lasted and lasted. Finally after a couple of hours I decided to try a little yogurt and that seems to have worked to cut the acid. I've just come back from a walk and think it may be the cure for gas. Had the best burp while out walking and felt instant relief. But, maybe I didn't take the surgery thing seriously enough - got a bit winded and sweaty and now feel more tired than I should from only walking a mile slowly. Hoping tomorrow will be better when I get to start the day with some food. It would be nice to poop again some day too.
  19. Wow - sorry to hear that is has been a rocky road the past few days for you. I hope the increased heart rate, and tingling went away. That is scary especially when you are home alone. I have to say, I have not been hungry at all. I actually do not want to think of food. Dr gave me a liquid diet or Protein drinks, yogurt, creamy Soup and cottage cheese. I told him today that I could not even gag down the Protein Drink. He said stick to the other items. I just feel soooo exhausted. The most I have eaten in a day this week is 3 oz of yogurt, maybe 3 oz of cottage cheese and 4oz of soup, at the most. I don't want anymore either. I have no energy at all. Not good! I have to go back to work tomorrow and have 2 little kids. Good luck - hope you are feeling a little stronger too.

  21. I'll be 6 days postop on Christmas. Doctor said I could try yogurt and cottage cheese by day 4, will try later today. If that goes well, would it be okay to try some thinned mashed potatoes or yams, or.. something usually served for the holiday? Would powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury mix in okay with those? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    My Life Still Sucks

I started trying just one meal a day of solid meats, and still chose to stick to super soft meat. Things like fajita meat worked really, flank and skirt steak are kind of fatty, so it helped keep them moist, and easily chewed down. I always added some sort of gravy/condiment/sauce to meat even if it was just a hint of steak sauce, or greek yogurt, it helped me transition to solids. I know you're frustrated. The B12 will actually help with energy. I was popping one 2500mcg sublingual every day, and at my 18 month f/u appointment, my levels were double the high normal so my surgeon had me cut down to 3-4 times a week and my levels scaled down to normal. Honestly, I had some outside life stressors that I think contributed to my "fear" or slow transition to solid food, plus I felt like sh*t for the first 3 months. I was hospitalized again around 6-7 weeks post-op, my husband was in a shithole of Afghanistan getting mortared every day, we went over 30 days with zero communication at one point so my life was pure stress with trying to fully recover before my husband returned was a top priority. I can honestly say that once my husband came home, life was so much easier. I still struggled with solids, but it seems that with that stress out of the way, things really progressed. I know how you feel, I remember those days all too well even though it was so long ago. I also wasn't battling depression so I can not relate to that aspect of your recovery. I was just stressed to the max. I had to really become "Positive Polly" to get me through. Positive affirmations, and just really trying to "self-talk" myself into feeling better every day. I would ask for a scope, but don't surprised if they find nothing. I went through several contrast studies, watching different consistency of liquids move through, and nothing was wrong with my stomach. Have you considered trying a Papaya enzyme to help with digestion? You add it to your food, and it helps break down meats. You could also be experiencing slow transit time. There are drugs for that as well. Bentyl is one that we discussed me going just this January when I was burping up food several hours after eating, and having some gastritis symptoms. I did add some papaya enzyme to my dense Proteins, and it did seem to help with digestion. Please feel free to message me anytime if you need to talk.
  23. So--today was my first fill. I was worried about nothing! I apparently have a good amount of scar tissue but it wasn't a big deal. I have 3 cc in my 10cc band. I go back in two weeks for another tweak. So far, no issues eating....I had a yogurt and blended food tonight. Phew......I am glad that is behind me. Now...to they gym I go......

I could just kiss you all. I feel so much better!!!!!! :kiss I guess I thought all of this time things would be easy...Since I could noly eat so little....why not eat what I want and enjoy it?? Maybe my way of thinking has been all screwed up! I really was under the impression that I did not have to diet......well I now know that I must hold myself accountable for everything I do and eat!!!!!!!!! I do better on the weekdays with my eating. I normally do a couple of bites of Yogurt, or cottage cheese and a juice of Frappacino in the bottle. lunch, fast food......but like less than half....Dinner what ever is cooked...smaller portions....I got this band thinking and hoping that I could eat "normal" If there is every a thing......I did not realized that I still needed to be conscious. Now I am more in a panic!!!!! If possible. please anyone out there give me some of your typical days intake....that will give me an idea on how I can change my eating behaviour....As I am typing this I am going to send out an email to my friend and invite her to walk........that will hold me accountable....I know she'll say yes...if not, I'll walk alone. I am also going to crack open a bottled of Water and MAKE myself finish it by bed time....small steps....thanks everyone for the advice. I am going to use it wisely...I am going to post on the board asking for menu ideas! I feel so much better!!!!! Birdee!:banana
