    Fruits

My plan had said unsweetened applesauce was ok to be used to mix in crushed pills. So in that manner, fruit itself isn't a non-starter. However, they also didn't want the extra fiber soon after surgery. And the priority is always on protein first. Without your plans actual guidance it's hard to say. Myself at one month out would be ok with a little soft fruits - not going to fill up on it as that would take away from my protein goals. I don't think I'd eat a raw apple at this point - but perhaps one that's been stewed or cooked in a dish.
  2. I'm drinking the whey protein powder not and it just doesn't seem to fill me up like the pre-made shakes I was doing. I just want to be drinking what I'll be needing after surgery. Sent from my SM-S908U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. I'd do whatever your program says to do. Early out, we were required to drink whey protein isolate because it's the most absorbable form of protein, and there's really no other way we could get enough protein that early on without it. Later on, as we were able to eat more and were getting most of our protein through food, we could have other kinds of protein shakes if we wanted (for example, protein blends) - or, if we were able to get ALL of our protein requirements met, we could give up the shakes altogether. If you're required to have whey protein isolate early out, then neither Slimfast powder nor Slimfast ready to drink shakes are going to do it for you. The protein in them is "milk protein concentrate", plus a lot of other things.

    Any July buddies?

Hi kmc! So excited that we're twins! When do you have to start your pre surgery diet? Mine is liquid only, mainly protein, shakes.

It's similar to a gastric bypass but less invasive and reversible. Sleeve wasn't an option for me because of my acid reflux
  6. Immediately post surgery you will probably want the one that gives you more bang for your buck in terms of protein for a while but that doesn’t have to be powder. There are numerous brands of premade shakes you can try. I only say this if you have a hard time getting your protein down. Some people don’t have any issues (I was one of them) and can drink anything fairly easily. Honestly what will really most likely dictate this is which you can stand the taste of as post surgery for many of us our taste for sweet changes a bit and some of the shakes are just disgusting. That being said if you choose to stay on shakes long term uou will probably want to go with the lowest calorie one you like.
  7. That's really interesting .They definitely told me the protein shakes counted towards my 64oz fluid goal. Only 32oz needed to be water. No way I could do 64oz of water AND add in more to get 60g protein. Just not enough hours in the day. I'm taking in every 15 minutes as it is. Good luck to you!
  8. They told me to count water And shakes separately. And to put the water first. So 64 oz water plus whatever would bring me to 60 grams protein. I’m just not wanting to drink. I don’t feel thirsty or hungry. It hurts when I drink, so it’s just not a good time lol. I had about 2/3 of a shake earlier.
  9. As catwoman said, They only reverse a bypass for severe medical issues. When you say you want the stomach acid and nutrition back, can you explain this a little more. Do you have some type of absorption issue now that you are hoping to correct? I would think that converting to a DS may be an option for you to lose the weight regain but if you already have absorption issues with sleeve they could get even worse (I would talk to a surgeon about that).
  10. Yesterday, my first full day on my own, I was able to get 64oz of fluid including 32oz of water. That's what I've been told to do. Is that what you mean? Or do you have to get 64oz of water alone? No way I could do that right now AND get 60g of protein.
  11. I am 6 weeks post-op and am able to eat pretty much anything and everything....including things I really shouldn't eat. I even had fried chicken at a family gathering - a leg and a wing. It was delicious and went down WAY too easy. Fortunately, I have continued to lose weight, although probably slower than many of you. I realize my weight loss would be quicker if I stuck with just lean protein and veggies - which I do MOST of the time - but I'm 62 yrs old and for me, the purpose of the surgery was to have a tool to help me not OVEREAT, as I have done all of my life, but still be able to enjoy my favorite foods in moderation. ALL THINGS in moderation! Fortunately, my nutritionist's plan does not exclude carbs - in fact, whole grain breads and pasta are included and encouraged in the program I am on. I am just so happy that I have been fortunate enough to have had an easy recovery from the surgery and absolutely none of the bad side effects. I continue to drink the protein20 waters to supplement my protein intake in order to allow me to enjoy other foods in my small tummy, and to help me with hydration - the ONE thing I still struggle with is getting my 64 oz in daily.
  12. Same here. I know it's only temporary so I'm not worried about it. I am concentrating on getting all my fluid and proteins in now. Hang in there!

Post Op Return to work question

I had surgery Tuesday and was back to work Monday. I also work from home at a very idle desk job. By then I had very little pain or discomfort, but I was extremely tired. I had to take frequent breaks to rest, and took a nap after work every single day for at least the first week, maybe even a little longer. If your schedule/work load allows for a good bit of flexibility where you can step away and rest when needed, then you should be fine to go back pretty quickly. But if you have to keep a more rigid schedule, I would suggest taking a few extra days. And, as others have mentioned, those first few weeks getting in your fluids and protein will be a full time job, so make sure you have the mental capacity to focus on that.

Post Op Return to work question

I work a desk job, and wound up taking 2 weeks off fully, and another week of half days. While the job is not strenuous physically, it is mentally taxing and I would have struggled taking on a full load immediately. I would not underestimate how physically taxing surgery can be on the body, while you are healing. I didn't have much pain, but I was physically exhausted and needed daily naps for the first month or so after surgery. You are also eating so little that concentrating on complex tasks can be tough. I will say, keeping to the schedule needed to get all my fluids and protein felt like a full time job the first few weeks, and it did actually get tougher once I started working FT again, even from home. For example, once I got back to work, I had to worry about timing my puree stage snacks and meals with phone calls, etc. I would give yourself some grace. Maybe plan on two weeks off, but discuss with your job that it's possible you may return early - or may need more time. I think imbedding some flexibility into your plans is helpful. I originally planned on 2 weeks off, but was still so tired that the 3rd week I decided to do half days. I'd already prepped by job for the possibility and it made it easy. Honestly, everyone's recovery is different, so it's just smart in general to not count on being back to full strength. And if you are one of those that bounces back easily - great! I'm guessing your job wouldn't say no to you coming back early.

Post Op Return to work question

I took 5 weeks but I have an active job. When I got out of the Hospital, I couldn’t drive for a week. Depending on how your doctor does your discharge instructions, you won’t feel like doing much for at least a week or so. When I was on the liquid diet, I was setting my phone timer every 15 minutes to drink liquids such as protein shakes from a medicine cup. That will take up your whole day. When you get to Puréed it will be more flexible
  16. Now that we got those un-inspiring rest stop fast food options behind us, bring on the Degustation!! One of many things I ordered last night that Mr had to eat the rest of after I took my obligatory tasting bites: Plogue à Champlain Foie Gras: a small pancake, topped with melted cheese, roasted fingerling potatoes, fried egg, think cut Canadian bacon, crowned with a slab of seared foie gras, smothered with a maple syrup reduction. Omg im drooling just writing out the description. 🤤 I have no idea what the calories are…but definitely not for the calorie watchers, nor those prone to heart disease. P.S. i/we also ordered a bunch of other stuff from our night of venue hopping, but the picture quality of these progressively decreased as our alcohol consumption increased.

    Weight gain & Health Issues

As @catwoman7 said some of those changes you mentioned are just temporary. Like hair loss usually persists for about 3 months & your hormones settle once you’ve lost most of your weight (oestrogen is stored in fat so as you lose all the excess oestrogen is released into blood stream). Large weight regain can occur because of complacency & people slipping back into old eating habits. It can occur because how they were eating wasn’t sustainable &/or was too restrictive. It didn’t allow them to live their life as they wanted & hindered them doing what they enjoyed. Or they didn’t do the head work to understand & learn to manage their old eating behaviours & what drove them to eat. All things the surgery doesn’t do anything about. But it does give you the time to explore these factors. Also remember the average weight loss at about the three year mark is 60% of the weight that had to be lost. This can include the bounce back ‘resettling’ weight gain, complacency & adjusting to a more flexible eating plan. Or it could just be the weight your body is happier at. Sure there is always a chance to develop an issue that has to be monitored but it’s rare. Comparatively, there are very few complications from weight loss surgery. Some of the issues may not have anything to do with the surgery. I have a protein malabsorption issue. Not from my 3 yr old sleeve but from my gall being removed last year. (Malabsorption issues are very rare with sleeve.) I have low BP. I had a genetic predisposition before surgery now it’s all the time because of my lower weight not the surgery. Gerd is probably the highest risk after sleeve - about 15-20% I believe. But it can be managed or treated by a revision to bypass. Some issues may be revealed because you likely are being monitored medically more closely now then before or your weight & associated comorbidities may have been masking what were pre existing conditions. You’ll likely read & hear about people with problems because they they post to seek help & support. They don’t often post about what the cause was or the remedy. In comparison, people tend not to post or talk about their successes. I know many people who’ve had the surgery. No one has experienced long term or developed new issues because of the surgery. A couple regained most of their weight because they went back to their old eating habits. Certainly the benefits far outweigh any temporary side effects or the very rare problem.

4 months out and stalled all month!

I seem to be in a cycle of losing and gaining the same 3 lbs. I keep going in between 250 and 248. I am also about 4 months post op. Is a 4 month stall normal? I thought I broke 250 but it goes in between those 3 numbers probably for 3 weeks now I think or more idk... I'm going to be honest I'm not meeting my protein goals or hydration goals. Trying very hard with water but protein I am.not getting enough. I am still in a major calorie deficit and started vigorous exercise recently. I'm frustrated but all I can do is stay off the scale, stay in my deficit and keep working to reach my protein and water goal. Uhh but it is the most frustrating thing ever. I want to get to 200 so badly. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Post op week 1

I’d think that one would be very suitable as a lite yoghurt. It’s no fat, no sugar, no sweeteners & 15g protein. Most ‘lite’ yoghurts are either low fat or low added sugar but they up the artificial sweeteners keeping them sweet. As I said before just watch any chunky bits of fruit. Strain it well after adding the milk. Remember to add enough to make it very thin & easy to swallow.

    Needing help

I’m still struggling on making my water and protein goals. I enter reminders in my phone I still don’t make some meals and water intake. I’m also experiencing when I swallow water or food that it hurts going into the stomach. Like it feels like a cramp and then it stops also at times I’ll even burp. Is that dumping?

What do YOU order at Starbucks?

I order a skinny vanilla latte (that has non fat milk and sugar free vanilla syrup) I like their egg white bites and I will get those if I need a protein boost. If I have my kids with me I might get the sausage cheddar sandwhich…. Take one bite… then give the rest to the kids 😂 my kids are my helpers. If I’m alone I never want to get food because it’s a waste… but if I have my kids with me it’s a game changer. (this applies to going out to dinner as well: I won’t go out if it’s just me, but usually I will order what my five year old wants and just split it with him. And before you all cringe and say “enjoy your chicken strips”- my five year old has good taste…. He asks for steal and lobster 🤣)

What do YOU order at Starbucks?

First year out three shots of espresso on ice and 4 pumps of sugar free vanilla. I would then add a vanilla protein shake. Now Venti cold brew (black)

    Very upset after nutritionist appointment

I am a full on vegan. I eat whole food plant based diet. I had surgery July 2020. As long as you eat your veggies n some beans even a sweet potato they all have protein. I have amazing blood results I only take vitamin D and B complex every other day. I have lost 106 lb n kept it off even after recovering from a total hip surgery one year almost to the day from my sleeve surgery. You should not fear the crazy high protein. Your body will let you know what it needs. There is always Vegan protein shakes and you can blend some green smoothies n drink through out the day. You will be fine. I love listening to Dr Garth Davis’s lectures on YouTube. He is a vegan Bariatric surgeon. Why don’t you give him a listen. You will probably have less stress feeling after you hear him and feel more confident in the process. Good luck!

    No dumping?

Well said Tek! I have found that I can combine protein with a sugary treat and then don’t dump, but then there is the trade off of calories or not feeling deprived. Well, if I’m full of hamburger, I can eat that cookie, but I’m already “full” the extra will just be uncomfortable! It sounds like the original poster walked to the ice cream shop. Exercise can sometimes buff off the original sugar high of a dump and prevent one from starting. Or you are just in the majority of non-dumpers.

thank you! I knew you would understand being your Hashimoto's struggle. I literally can't "stomach" the taste of water additives. I'm not a picky person at all so its super frustrating when everything makes you gag. I can get about 2 sips of a protein shake and less of protein water but this too shall pass so just doing the best I can and drinking water with lemon with SO MUCH ice lol its literally the only thing I can drink, and it has to be that way. I'm really trying to drink more than my current 2 - 3 glasses a day - it's an all-day struggle. I may get another myers IV bag next week but really hoping to no have too as its not cheap.
