Protein vs Calories what's too much

There is a ton of research that dispels this myth because its way more complicated than that. They type of protein and how long it takes you to digest the meal will affect how much protein your body absorbs. So 60g in a a shake is going to absorb differently than say 60 g of protein from an actual meal. Which is one of the reasons I mix my protein powder with food. What kind of food pureed, Jello, whole? Sent from my N9518 using the BariatricPal App right now puree so I mix it into my main meal which is usually a creamy Soup of some kind.

    Lapband / Gastric Bypass

Lap band has many possible complications, if there is a choice to be made choose between bypass and sleeve not the band. Bypass is for someone looking to loose 100 lbs and sleeve if you are looking to loose 60 or 80. Sent from my SM-G550T using the BariatricPal App Thank you so much. I hope you had a good new year. My insurance wouldn't cover bariatric surgery so I'm scheduled in March in Tijuana. I decided to use mexicobariatrics.com and my surgeon is Dr Luis Cervantes. I like that the hospital has an ICU and Er in case of complications. Lots of places call themselves a hospital but are only clinics. Look into that stuff and verify the surgeon credentials. I wish I could do it sooner but that's when I'll be able to have the $. Best of luck to you in your search. Sent from my QTAIR7 using the BariatricPal App

    Mini gastric bypass

I had mini gastric bypass on December 12th. Mini gastric bypass is similar to gastric bypass. One of the differences is the way the pouch is made. It is made from a different part of the stomach that resembles the sleeve pouch, except it's still the same size as the pouch made with the bypass. The other difference is that there is only one joining, or anastomosis, instead of two. It's less chance of complications and it is just as effective as gastric bypass. It works the same way. 12. Now that we are in the new year, I am officially counting down the days until my surgery! I have all of my pre-op tests done, and the only thing left for me to do is have my final pre-op appointment with my surgeon on January 5. When I spoke with my surgeon's nurse last week, she said I will be on a liquid diet for one week pre-op, and clear liquids one day before the actual surgery. She also said that I will have my surgery on Tuesday, January 17, and I will be required to stay in the hospital for 2 nights, so I will be released to come home on Thursday. As much as I would love to come home quickly, I am kind of happy that I will be staying for a few days in order to make sure everything is ok before I head home. Especially after reading about all of the different complications that people have run into after their procedures. Hopefully mine will go smoothly, but if not, I will at least be in the hospital for a couple of days to get pain relief and other support as needed. January 17 cannot come fast enough! I just want to be through this and on the other side. Researching the entire process is consuming my every thoughts right now! This group has been so helpful with informing me of what to expect, good and bad, and how to prepare for post-op. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hiatal Hernia repair with sleeve

I had hiatal hernia repair, gall bladder removal and sleeve. I had gerd before surgery. I have had no complications. 15 days post op. I do notice at night when I lay down I don't feel acid in my throat any more. It is a good thing doc repaired it. I am told that as you lose weight the hiatal can get more loose!! Body Aches and nausea

According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. So interpreting the above, the recommendations is to avoid NSAIDs such as aspirin. Take proton-pump inhibitors. My surgeon prescribed Omeprazole (over the counter Prilosec) for the first year to allow my stomach to heal properly. The third recommendations is to be tested to make sure that you do not have an Helicobacter pylori infection. This might be the root cause of your problem. Some individuals on this website reported this infection was the cause of their problems. You surgeon recommended start taking enzymes. I suspect he/she is talking about taking Probiotics. Whenever you take antibiotics, it kills not only the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria in your gut. This good bacteria must be reestablished after surgery. That is what probiotics do. If you underwent RNY gastric bypass surgery, your body no longer makes the Vitamins that your body needs so therefore you will need to take Vitamin supplements for the rest of your life. If you fail to take these vitamins, your body will develop major deficiencies and seriously affect your health. So since you said that your surgeon recommends that you stop taking vitamins does not make any sense to me. This really needs to be rechecked. You mentioned that your body bruises very easily. Normally this is caused by a blood thinner. Aspirin is a blood thinner and because it NASAID and should be avoided. Also many products such as Excedrin and other over the counter pain medicine also contains aspirin. These products should be avoided.

    Kaiser Fremont- Dr. Hahn

Hi @@Phoenix40! So last Thursday I went for my Nutrition/Surgeon/Coordinator appointment. I'll describe each appointment below: First you are weighed in and your height is taken Nutrition: The nutritionist is a very nice lady and she will ask you about what type of diet you have been on (I started following the 1200 calorie diet after orientation). You will have to describe what you usually eat for Breakfast, lunch, dinner, Snacks, etc. She also talks about Vitamins and what type you will need post op (this will depend on if you get the sleeve or bypass) and what to expect as far as diet goes in the first weeks after surgery (i.e. liquids, soft foods, etc) She also informed me about the different types of Protein drinks and answered any questions I had. Surgeon: Dr. Hahn was very patient. He went over my BMI, co morbidities, medications, etc to ensure that I would be a good candidate for surgery. He said it would be my choice whether to go for sleeve or bypass as I would be great candidate for either (I don't have acid reflux). We talked about the differences between sleeve and bypass (right off the bat he discouraged from the lap band so we were in agreement about that). He reiterated that regain was possible with either surgery and so is dumping (so it really comes down to the patient being willing to put in the work to not only lose the weight but keep it off). He went into detail about possible complications withe each procedure (ulcers, reactive hypoglycemia, reflux, etc). He then set a weight loss goal for me. Normally they ask the patients to lose 10% of their body weight but Dr. Hahn only requires a 7-8%, of total body weight, loss. For me 7-8% was 19 pounds (I had already lost 9 pounds since orientation and he credited me so I needed to lose 10 pounds to get a surgery date and 5 pounds to get a psych appointment). The only other requirements Dr. Hahn set out for me, besides weight loss, is attending at least one support group, and an EKG (I already finished my bloodwork). Coordinator: She was very pleasant. She informed of what my next steps to surgery are (support group, psych appointment, etc) and that to be sure I call monthly to update them on my weight and progress. Before the psych appointment each patient must fill out a surgery quiz (located in Chapter 9 of the Bariatric binder) and send it in before the appointment. Overrall it was an interesting yet quick appointment. I was told to expect to be there for 3 hours but for me it was more like 2 hours. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App I am also going through kaiser Fremont the haven't weighed me yet .. Did they weigh you at the surgery orientation? I would love to start dieting again I feel awful not doing anything .. but I'm scared if I drop down below the 40 BMI it will disqualify me for the surgery Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Am I crazy?

Everyone is different so it could go both ways. I go back to work on Tuesday and my surgery was on 11/22. I did have some complications along the way but so could you. Two weeks could very well be just fine but there is that possibility that it may not be enough.
  22. Hi All, I am excited to announce my insurance approved my surgery yesterday 12/30/2016. I have researched and attempted to have Bariatric surgery years ago. The insurance I had denied me because of paper work and it was so frustrating working with hospitals that had wayyy too many patients and the patient advocates were never available and did not return phone calls so I gave up. In 2002 I had my youngest son so in the years after I was too scared to undergo surgery and risk complications with my baby being so young. Now he is 14 and Bariatric surgery has been done successfully well before he was born and I am more educated about it. I believe these years have given me time to heal. We all have struggles in life within ourselves, family, jobs, etc that we have to overcome the obstacles. I can say I am in a better place in life than I was 14...and even 5 years ago. I suffered from a clot in my calf muscle that started a roller coaster of chronic pain for years. During that time I had 2 miscarriages 6 mths apart 1 in my 2nd trimester...and I was over 300lbs. This sent me on a roller coaster of emotions while trying to maintain my home and be there for everyone else until one day I decided to live for me. No more drama with family and relationships I had to get back in the will of God for my life. I went vegan for a year and lost 50lbs and never had the chronic pain again and the growths in both sides of my breast completely cleared. One word of advice: If we don't deal with our emotional issues now, we set ourselves up for failure later. We see many have surgery and regain the weight largely because their emotional issues were never addressed. I started right before Thanksgiving on the Daniel's Fast. We were doing 1 week but through prayer I was guided to do a little over a month. It has made a tremendous difference in my life both mentally & spiritually. Before I received the approval I decided to begin working towards a healthier lifestyle because who knows with insurances today and I've been denied many times before. I did not want my life defined by surgery and I didn't want to wait for someone else to say yes for me to begin living healthier. We need that liver to shrink before surgery anyway. I started juicing again and my Protein drinks and I've lost 3.8lbs in 3days. On day 2 my patient advocate called and said she submitted my paper work and said the insurance company normally takes about 15 days to get back to them. On day 3 she called me back (the next day) and said she received my approval and had NEVER seen the insurance respond so fast! I know this thread is lengthy but I need you to know in her eyes it was immediate yet in mine it had been years of trying. It wasn't until I began living in my healing both spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically that the door was opened immediately for me. So don't compare your time to someone else because we don't know when we hear how they had a quick insurance approval, all the years it took for them to get to that place. We all have our own journeys. I could have let the past let downs fuel an energy of negativity over this situation but I didn't. I kept telling myself every time it "seemed" a block was coming "I'm not going to worry about it", and kept moving. Be encouraged, release the drama & those who bring it from your life so you can have a healthy focus on self and always live in your truths. Blessing & Happy New Year!
  23. @@Bhappy, thanks for asking and sorry about the late reply! The surgery went well and I am recovering easily, no issues - trying to keep hydrated and focusing on my Protein intake. Emotionally, I have many "what-if" moments daily that bring me to tears - wondering if I could have done this on my own and in fear of complications down the road. I was fully aware of all the complications and I made this decision knowing that it would be only a matter of time before I became diabetic as it runs very strongly in my family. Its just a part of the process and I know that this was the solution I needed or another a year or two or three....would have passed trying to do it on own with no success like the last 14 years. How are you doing? I am curious also about your Vitamin plan - what are you taking?

    Am I crazy?

Hi. I had my surgery 2 weeks before the start of school this year - I'm a pre k teacher in the Bronx. Besides needing help to set up my classroom I was fine. I imagine at this point of the year you know your kids pretty well and know whether you need to be concerned about anyone acting out. Otherwise, assuming you have a 'normal' surgery with no complications I think you should be fine. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Mexico Location's - Please Help

I had my surgery with Dr. Ariel Ortiz at Obesity Control Center in Tijuana just over 6 years ago. My daughter is a gastroenterologist and he was specifically recommended to her by colleagues in the bariatric field. He was a world renown, cutting edge surgeon even then. I had a great experience, easy recovery and zero complications. As a nurse myself, I know the difference between quality healthcare and substandard, cut-rate care. Would recommend him and OCC to anyone interested in WLS.
