    Feeling a bit low

Geez I know how you are feeling. I was the "party girl" drinking and eating, always going out and now since Dec 1 pre-op diet I have been staying home a lot. Most of my friends don't get it and are upset with me, but you know what I don't care because in one year I will be down to my goal weight. As far as your husband goes maybe he will try to start eating healthier with you and be more supportive. I am sure in the back of his mind he is like omg she is going to lose all this weight and take off on me, and it does happen. My friend had gastric bypass two years ago and her husband is constantly spying on her, texting her, questioning her etc. Maybe having a heart to heart with him with help? Is he receptive to talks? Good luck with YOUR WEIGHT LOSS. Happy New Year!!!

Lap Band vs Roux en Y choices

My surgeon told me to have the band. LOL! For me, it was mainly the lower complication risk and being less invasive that were important for me. I had other co-morbidity issues (mainly heart issues) and keeping blood loss to a minimum was important, since I had to stay on aspirin and I take plavix, although I did stop that for the surgery. I'm sure that rules out plastic surgery for me! I have a lower BMI, too. At this point, I'm really glad I had the band. Yeah, it's tedious dealing with restriction and whatnot, but I love the idea that it's adjustable to handle different phases of life. I don't know what will come my way and being able to adjust the band to meet different nutritional needs was very attractive to me, especially since I will most likely have to deal with severe heart problems down the road. I also like the slower weight loss. It's healthier and I don't want more wrinkles than I have to have! You have to do what's best for you. I know quite a few people with bypasses. Some love them. Some wish they'd had a band. The same is true for people with a band. Some love them; some wish they'd had bypass. Check back with me in a year or two and see if I still love this.

  4. Candy - i would say it can't hurt, might help. Darn it! I have a feeling I need to call the referral lady tomorrow and ask her to send them AGAIN but coded for like just the regular stuff. My insurance pays for gastric bypass but with it being a pre-approval thing - I just have this feeling that @@Kindle and @@SnohoGal98296 are right and I need to have it redone. She is going to hate me lol.
  5. Do I need to have my doctor change the reason for the tests? I had him put for bariatric surgery on the referral. However, I can surely need these tests just in and of themselves for diabetes and being overweight. My insurance does cover bariatric bypass but not the sleeve. However, I don't want the bypass hence Mexico. Also, it is a pain trying to get accepted for the surgery anyway. If he already did the referral for bariatric, can I go and change it? Or will they be like, 'nice try but too late you already said bariatric'?

  8. So far I've lost about 73% of my EBW. The first 60% was "easier", but far from easy. LOL. I followed a plan and stuck to it. I lost weight. It was and IS a diet. Make no mistakes about that. LOL. Many are lucky in that the rule: Even blind squirrels will find a nut every now and then...applies to them with surgery. The surgery does a lot of the heavy lifting. But I was not so fortunate. I have to work for every pound lost. And if you want to get beyond your 60%, it takes outright work, cunning, hacking, revising, and continuing to walk the WLS walk, every damn day. But it is worth it. I dreamed big. My RD told me it was unrealistic, but I was not gonna settle for "Overweight" after having major tum surgery. I want to be in the normal weight range and that is anything below about 140lbs. My goal is 125-130lbs. It may take another year to get there. LOL.

    Why the sleeve?

I had researched weight loss surgery about 8 years ago, then bypass and lap bad were the choices. Neither really appealed to me. I knew a few folks that had lots of issues with the lap band. I didn't' want the long term absorption issues that can come with bypass either. My biggest issues with unsuccessful weight loss in the past has been appetite. I did have a big appetite and portion size was and issue. About two years ago I started searching again and found info on the sleeve. This seemed to be a very good option for me. And my doctor agreed. I did my research and was convinced. I am 13 months out and could not be happier. Good luck in your choice, get all the answers you need!

    Why the sleeve?

I also did a ton of research in regards to bypass and lap band. I had a problem with the bypass because they were bypassing the duodenal which is where most of your nutrients are absorbed. It didn't really make sense to have the lap band for me because I have had a friend where she kept having to go back and get it fixed because it either slipped or eroded. I don't have time to keep going back and forth with those kind of issues. With all the research I did the sleeve was the best option, even though there is little long time research the sleeve is showing really great results.

    I'ts a Secret

i agree with everyone else. dont go through this alone. it is SURGERY. i know it may be difficult because you think he will not understand, but think of how he may react if you do it without telling him. if my DH did that to me, i would be livid! when you sit him down, maybe tell him not to interrupt you and give him your reasons why you want it. tell him that it IS safer than bypass, etc... you can still plan on having the surgery, even if he is not 100% on board with the idea of banding, ask him to be there for you the day you have surgery. best of luck to you and keep us posted.
  12. WOW I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW FAR I'VE COME. I started my diet journey 5 months ago today. at my heaviest in the surgeons office I weighed in at 322lbs. I was admitted to hospital for surgery 256lbs now I'm 3 months post op and feeling great. JUST hit 190lbs this morning and also realised I'm just 7lbs away from the top end of a healthy BMI. I'm doing so well I might even get down to 180lbs yet and that feels amazing. I've been doing a lot of fasting and that has really helped. I've also got my new rowing machine and started using it tonight; it is hard work that's for sure 😀 officially lost 132lbs now 😄 I still say RNY BYPASS was the best choice I've ever made and to anyone else looking at bypass don't stress too much I've not had one issue or complication so far!! THANKS. MIKE.

    Skinny

I have never been skinny. I cannot even imagine what it would be like. Ever since I was a child I was big. So now to think that I might actually be a weight that I haven't been since I was a child is amazing. I would love to be able to wear smaller sizes. I would love to go into any store and try on something that I like. I am scared though. I was on Jenny Craig two years ago and was doing great and was on the message boards everyday and thought to myself "this is it, I am going to do it this time". But only to gain all of the weight back a few months later when I couldn't afford it anymore. At least that is one thing going for me this time, it will actually cost less. I wonder what I will look like. What if I don't like the way I look. I will probably look weird to myself. You know when celebrities lose a lot of weight and you think to yourself "they looked better heavier". I hope that doesn't happen. I also wonder if I will look anything like my sister who has been skinny her whole life. My whole family is mismatched. If you get us all in the same room you probably wouldn't guess that we are all related. It is kind of funny. Though I look just like my dad when he was young. I saw a picture of him when he was in the navy and I thought to myself "wow that is me". My dad is a big guy. I wish he would do this too. He wouldn't ever do it though. I know some of his co-workers have had the bypass. Don't know about the band. But I don't think he would do whatever it took to get approval. It makes me sad because I want him to be healthy. My sister is overweight too. Only since she had children though. She was super small when she was younger. She isn't big enough to get approved through insurance and she can't pay for it. She is super jealous of me but I am also way heavier than her. I hope she can still be happy for me when I reach my goals.
  15. It is going to take time, so be patient!! Everyone loses weight differently. Some drop it fast and some don't really start to lose until they get their adjustments. Also, remember, this isn't bypass surgery where people lose weight quickly...it is going to take time. So take a deep breath and be patient. You are going to look back at the time you lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks and see how great that was. In the future, 1 to 2 pounds a week is NORMAL and anything above that is gravy. Merry Christmas!!

    got my 3rd adjustment today

I was banded on August 1, 2008 and I went today for my 2 month checkup and he did not give me a fill this month either. I have not had a fill yet cause I lost 20 lbs the 1st month and I had lost 14 lbs this month so he said I did not need a fill yet. I am okay with that though. I wish I would never need a fill and could loose all of my weight with just the band restriction. My doc said right now I am actually running in line with his gastric bypass patients, but he told me not to get overly excited cause it will slow down now. I hope he is wrong though.

    Psych Eval

So, today was the day for my psych eval. Not sure to know what to think about it. I went in and the psychologist was very nice. Gave me a piece of paper and asked that I write my name and dob on it and Dr. to do my surgery. He then had me answer a list of questions he had wrote down such as: where did I here about the bypass surgery, why did I want bypass surgery, have I attended a seminar yet, have I seen the dietitian and if so how many times, what family support do I have, what are the complications of bypass surgery, and what type of diet/exercise changes do I plan to make. Last but not least, what will be the hardest change I will have to make after having the bypass surgery. Then he proceeded to have me fill out the standardized psychology test MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Test) 300+ true/false questions I had to answer. Once I finished he told me thank you so much, I will send the results to Dr. by beginning of the week and took my fee. Kinda perplexed feeling perplexed right now! I have another dietitian appoint the 27th and not sure what will happen next. I also called my insurance company to see if the office has submitted a request for approval and they had not so far. I sure would like to get confirmation on something! Waiting is hard! Unknown if you are covered is even harder. Not knowing if you will be able to even get the revision surgery is the hardest!😟
  18. It's hard to decide who to tell. I of course told my hubby and best friend when I first started considering this plus two friends who have had bypass surgery and answered 500 questions before i even went to the initial meeting. I was going to wait and tell my family and some other friends until I got approved for surgery (no point in hearing all the feedback/worrying people if I didn't get approved) but I finally told them when they were trying to plan a family vacation the month I would be having my surgery and wouldn't take my polite no for an answer. I have only told my boss and one other close friend at work so far what I am having done. I am also having my hernia fixed so I am kind of sticking to that story for the rest of my co-workers for now. I am also a teacher so sent a note home to the parents just saying I was having surgery and the dates I would be out. I am not ashamed by any means just don't want any negative feedback (not that I have gotten any so far) I have several friends that have had it done...one posted off the bat on Facebook, one waited till her year-versary and announced it and the other still has yet to post. My sister is getting married in June and I am the matron of honor and I know I will be around a lot of family that will obviously notice so I am sure I will have to tell everyone then before that just a case by case basis I guess!

    So. Much. Water!

arcwls said, "I’m finding it difficult being 4 days Post Op to even get 200mL (7oz) in!" Your body is in a major heal mode right after surgery. Many people find it difficult to meet their protein and fluid requirements during the first couple weeks. Just keep trying and you should be able to get there soon. Amburmist said, "Hi guys. Im about 2 months post op from gastric bypass and finding it SO difficult to get in my daily Water requirements (64oz min)." My discharge directions read "Drink 64-80 ounces of water or a low calorie liquid daily. This includes any protein supplement in liquid form." Since I was drinking 3 protein drinks (48 ounces of water) each day, it was not difficult to reach this goal. Amburmist said, "To make it even harder, my team says I have to drink a minimim of 64oz of water daily, and I'm not allowed to subtract any other liquids I have during the day (like Protein Shake or coffee or whatever) from the 64oz minimum water requirement." From my perception after talking with my nutritionist - The fluid requirement is met by a combination. It is not only the water that you drink each day. But also the water you drink when you take your vitamins and medicine. It is the milk you drink. It is the fluids content of the protein shakes. It is the water component of the soups you take. It is met by flavored water such as Crystal Light. It is met by sugar free popsicles. It is met by tea and decaf coffee. It is a combination of all the fluids that you consume during the day. It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. Sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I also found a new drink Bai which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate hot drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.

    Pre-Re-Op Appt

Welcome! Im nearly three week post op - removal of band ( from 2004) conversion to gastric bypass plus there threw in the removal of my gall bladder as a surprise gift! Lol. Im feeling very good - the whole op took just over 2 and a half hours everything is going down with ease. I have to drink alot of Water aday, and sometimes forget to do so! Eating feels different now.. Im learning what the feeling of full means.. And when to stop before i get too full. No more feeling of that horrible " stuck" feeling the band gave. No more standing up to eat, no more vomiting no more feeling of drowning in my own saliva! Its great Good luck!!

    Pre-Re-Op Appt

I hear a lot of people switching from band to bypass. I had the surgery 7/24/12 and have lost a total of 47 pounds. I highly recommend rny. I am currently at a stall, but wouldn't change it for the world. I am never hungry which makes it easier to stick to the new way of life. I find myself not even wanting the unhealthy food choices I would have picked before. The biggest challenge is for me right now is the stall I am in, but patience is the key. I know if I stick to the program the weight will come off in the end. Good luck on whichever surgery you choose! This is an excellent resource.

    Supporting Cast

Kisha and Krimson Butterfly- Its the dog-honest thing. Now that I am 1/2 the size I once was , really-truly AM , down to 182 from HW of 365+, people are coming out of the WoodWork, "Oh I have been watching and supporting YOU all along!" I knew YOU could do it, should I have told YOU?" Yeah it sure would have been nice, especially when I had my PICC line in and didn't know how long That Might Be! Suddenly they want to support ME but where were they when I was scared to death to even undertake it at 72, with so many telling me "I was DESTROYING my health" Should be satisfied to do NOTHING and die OBESE" You'll die on the Operating Table Anyway!" I seem to recall only Tomkitten , my son, really cheering me ON. Even my PCP, the very one who forecast "Death Before 75 " and told me Surgeon #1 was right to drop me because I was over 70 and a BAD SURGICAL RISK! Incredibly he now is Peeved because I have lost weight so Fast, told me He only expected ME to drop 70% of my Excess Weight, That's a VSG amount- I'm an RNY Bypass- We Lose 75 to 85%- wouldn't YOU THINK a DOCTOR Should KNOW THAT? Perhaps I should smile sweetly but inside I AM SEETHING- Seems like it's "A Little Too Late To Do the RIGHT thing NOW!" See I Had convinced myself it was The Right Time- The Right Operation- Done in the Right Place- By the right surgeon- For the Right reasons- To the Right person- but from then on I should use every tool possible to ensure IT All Was Not in Vain. And I worked HARD, So Very HARD to prove I was just as good as people 1/2, even 1/3 MY Age . And Now Suddenly They WANT to join MY PARADE? I just can't fathom it All!
  25. Hi I am 5'5" 230lbs I started my weightloss journey with a lap band in 2008 successfully losing 50 lbs the first year. Not all without bumps in the road. 2009 I had a new band put in due to a leak. Appearently this developed scar tissue from both surgeries. This happens to some not all lap banders. Call me challenged. I met with my wonderful surgeon this afternoon and he answered all of my concerns and questions regarding removal and conversions. My biggest fear vitamin and iron deficiencies which he explained how and why people have these issues. Sooooo I will be scheduled for a removal of band wait and see or removal of band and bypass all in one conversion. My choice of course....I am looking forward to talking with all or some of you on this blog.... More later.....
